MY REVIEW:

This book is the second installment of the author's Triple Threat Christian romantic suspense series. I read and reviewed the first book in the series, Point of Danger, and was eager to read this book when it came up for review through the Revell Reads Blogger Program. Zeke Sloan and Cate Reilly have a history. A history that left lingering feelings of betrayal and remorse--it's the reader's challenge to figure out which emotion each of these strong lead characters possesses.
The story grabbed my attention from the beginning when Cate is asked by her employer to take on a mission that she definitely does not want to assume. She has her reasons lined up in her mind for why she won't work undercover ever again, but her superior's appeal to her passion for justice causes her to throw herself into this new mission whole-heartedly.
Zeke Sloan is being chased by demons of his own which causes him to take on high-risk assignments for his employer. His quest to make amends for his past and his strong sense of justice spur him into action on his newest assignment. This complex and well-written plot are accentuated by the underlying feelings both of the protagonists have for each other. The addition of diverse characters such as a young African-American teen, Kayla, and a nice Latino couple who innocently became entangled in this web of crime and criminals were bonuses to me. I enjoyed reading how various individuals worked as a team to sort through clues and gather information in order to put the mystery together and solve the case.
 There is quite a bit of violence which the author handled with discretion. The story held my interest until the end of the book. The faith thread is present in an 'off page' manner. This book is completely clean in language and content. I received a paperback copy of this book from the publisher through their Revell Reads Blogger Program. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

From the author:  "When Emma meets Luke is one of my favorite scenes because although my book deals with some difficult issues, there is also humor."

At the last stack, Emma divided the books on the shelf and peeked through the opening. The lanky girl in the stained, sky-blue hoodie had been curled up in the chair all day, sleeping. Was that Harley? It had been weeks since she’d been in the library. Where had Harley been since school started? Poor kid missed the show. Emma removed her phone from her sweater pocket, turned, and walked directly into a hard, broad chest. The tall, dark, David-lookalike stranger stepped back and gripped her elbows.

“Excuse me.” They spoke in unison.

“Are you all right, Mrs. Baker?” His inviting voice made her yearn to lean in, to wrap herself in the warm tones.

Sweat broke out on Emma’s forehead, but her palm remained glued to her backside.

“You are Mrs. Baker, aren’t you?”

“Yes.” Her voice sounded raspy.

She let go of the phone and shook his hand. A current of energy traveled up her arm, and she inhaled sharply. In all her life, she’d never had such a reaction to a man, not even when she’d met Chris.

She stood there, dumbstruck, then gulped in air.

“Is there a place we can speak privately?” His low voice implied intimacy.

Emma bit her lip when her phone slipped further down her back thigh. Lord, have mercy. She jiggled her right leg. The phone slid down to the bend of her knee, and she smiled without showing her teeth. If only the dratted thing would fall down the rest of the way. It didn’t. With a sigh, she bent over and pretended to brush something from her calf. Finally! The onyx rectangle clattered to the floor.

Nina followed signage to the hall of instructor offices. Andrew’s door had been the second to the right, and she marched down the hall and stopped. Light shined into the hallway from his open door, and a sudden onset of dizziness came over her. She stumbled over to the wall and rested her head against the cold surface until the spinning subsided.

Nina inhaled and exhaled once. I can do this. I didn’t come all this way just to give a speech. Nina took another calming breath. We’ve got unfinished business. So what it’s been nearly two decades. He was happy to see her.

She gripped the doorknob to steady herself. Too bad there was nothing to steady the flip-flop going on with the rapid pacing of her heart. Surviving The Holidays

I love the holidays. That’s why I was so excited when I was given the opportunity to write a Christmas cozy mystery. There were just so many fun holiday ideas swirling around in my head. Since I write a series about a bakeshop in a lighthouse, known collectively as the Beacon Bakeshop Mystery Series, I knew that I wanted to pick the perfect baked good to represent the season while coming up with an entertaining yet meaningful Christmas plot. While there are so many yummy cakes, pies, cookies, candies, and stellar holiday flavored drinks to choose from, it didn’t take me long to settle on Christmas cookies as my baked good of the season.

I have to admit to being a bit of a Christmas cookie fanatic. In fact, much like my protagonist, Lindsey Bakewell, in Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off, I also tend to embrace the holidays with a near lunatic zeal. The day after Thanksgiving my biological holiday clock kicks in, and sugarplum visions of pulling off the perfect Christmas begin swirling in my head. As I make everyone within listening distance binge on Christmas music with me, I pester my husband to set up the outside Christmas lights. We then decorate the tree, decorate the house, write Christmas cards, and make our famous toffee to ship off to family and friends in time for Christmas. Next, I attack my list of Christmas cookie recipes. Since both my mom and my mother-in-law were excellent cooks, I use recipes that have been handed down from both sides of the family, adding a few new cookies to the list every year. There’s also shopping for gifts, wrapping presents, and planning a sugar cookie decorating day for my sons, who are now in their mid-twenties and way too busy to decorate cookies. I have to squeeze that in too, while planning the menus for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Did I happen to mention that I’m the type of person who totally underestimates the passing of time? Well, I do. It’s a terrible habit. Another terrible habit I have is believing that day-to-day obligations and emergencies won’t get in the way of my well thoughtout plans, because they always do. And when they do, stress begins to seep in. I grow frantic. I obsess. And soon the holidays become a mad dash to the finish line!

The good news is that most of this can be avoided if you follow these simple rules.

1.     Start early. This year, when we are facing unprecedented supply chain shortages due to the pandemic, it’s a good bet that certain items are going to be in short supply. Therefore, if your child wants a particular gift, try to get it early. If it’s not available, get creative and surprise them with a gift they didn’t even know they wanted until they opened it! Sometimes those are the best surprises.Internet shopping can save time and give you an idea of when gifts will arrive. Also, don’t be afraid to stock up on drinks and baking supplies early!

2.     Set a realistic budget. I’ll admit that this is a hard one to adhere to; but adhering to a budget is a must. Holidays can be stressful enough without the added pressure of financial stress in the months to come. No holiday is worth that. Consider homemade gifts and gifts of food. Limit gift-giving to children only. Set a dollar limit on gifts. We do this for our traditional Christmas Eve White Elephant. I’m always amazed at the clever and creative gifts that can be found for under $20. You don’t need to go overboard with decorations either. Simple is often best.

3.     Temper your sugarplum visions before they get out of control.  We all strive for that perfect Christmas. The key here is to simplify your To Do list. Don’t forget to delegate jobs. If you’re planning on sending Christmas cards, remember that they don’t have to arrive before Christmas. I’ve gotten so derailed with my To Do list before, that I’ve sent my cards out well after the New Year. People still enjoy them, even if they are a little late. If baking twelve varieties of Christmas cookies isn’t for you, throw a cookie exchange for your friends. Remember, most cookies can be baked then frozen for up to three months. Bake early and use the freezer!

4.     Make lists. Check them twice. You know what I mean.

5.     Practice gratitude. It’s easy to get swept up in the material trappings of the holidays. It can also lead to overblown expectations. I find that being grateful for even the smallest of miracles (for example: At least I didn’t burn ALL of the cookies. At least I had the energy to read the list! The house was actually clean for five minutes…) has a huge impact on one’s holiday spirit. Keeping that spirit bright is essential. We all know that it’s not really about the gifts that make the holidays so special. It’s about the true meaning of the season, and the blessing of the people in our lives we get to share it with.

This 'Young Readers Edition' of Anxious for Nothing was written for middle-grade students, ages 8-12. In the Introduction the author extends a warm welcome to young readers by stating he is proud of them for seeking an answer to the question, "How do I deal with worry?" (Page xi)

He defines worry as 'letting tomorrow's problems ruin today.' (Page xi) What a simple definition for such a powerful emotion! The author moves on to share Bible verses that deal with worry and anxiety before encouraging readers to seek God's tools for dealing with worry and anxiety. (Page xii)

The book is broken down into four sections; each section contains two or three chapters covering topics such as celebrating God's goodness, asking God for help, staying positive, and thinking about good things. 

Each chapter is filled with scripture references, Bible stories, anecdotes from real life, prayers, age-appropriate infographics and sidebars to help readers remember the lessons being taught, and acrostics to give readers a visual way to practice the teaching (i.e., C.A.L.M. in Chapter Eleven.) The back matter includes a touching Closing Note From Max Lucado, Sources, and Resources. 

This author's writing tone is very age appropriate, warm, inviting, and encouraging. I found this book to be inspirational for adults, too. I highly recommend this volume to families, church schools, Sunday school teachers, youth group leaders, church libraries, and anyone who is looking for some inspiration in our chaotic and stressful world.
