With the support of friends and family, a tenuous alliance with the lead police detective, and the bravery of an intrepid beagle, she races to protect her dad, rescue an unlikely ally, and bring a murderer to justice.

When all seems lost, will Olivia summon the strength and courage she needs to see where the light shines through?

He walked back to the house, leaving Olivia alone to make her visit. After her mother died, she spent countless quiet hours in the cottage, surrounded by her mother’s books and writings, to ease her grief. She had not been inside, though, for nearly a year. The interior remained unchanged—her father never wanted to move a thing. Her mother’s glasses lay on the desk in the same spot she last placed them. One of the four bookcases housed collections of her mother’s writing, while the other three sheltered an ample, diverse library. A glider chair bided its time by the front window, waiting for a willing partner to sit a spell and share in the sun’s radiant warmth.

She read the spines of her mother’s binders, each one labeled by form, genre, theme, location, or season. Fall: Poetry, Short Suspense, Tasmania—1995. The case was full of them. She selected a volume titled Memories, Olivia, and flipped to a random handwritten page.

Olivia,

Today, you were a most enchanted child. As Daddy and I sat on the porch enjoying a fine evening, you saw your first firefly. With you sitting on my lap, one of our little summer friends came to rest on your arm. You gazed at it, and when it glowed, your eyes widened. You looked at us in amazement! When the glow disappeared, your smile left, and you turned sad. When the glow returned, your face beamed as if you had discovered something magical. Daddy and I laughed, and then we carried you to the backyard where hundreds of fireflies danced in the night sky. You pointed to as many of the lights as you could until you fell asleep. May you always be looking for your lights. Even the darkest of night skies can never extinguish the glow of the smallest light.

Love,

Mom

Let's Celebrate!

Happy National Stay Home Because You’re Well Day (November 30)! Did this day sneak up on you again this year? Or are you like me and never knew such a day existed? We all are quite familiar with having to take sick days, but what about taking a wellness day? I know … who among us can take a day off from our “real life” jobs/lives just because we’re well. I’m not seeing alot of hands up. The spirit behind the unofficial “holiday,” though, reminds us we need to enjoy moments of ease daily and not just when we’re feeling ill.

This is exactly what Olivia is doing as her journey begins in Where the Light Shines Through. Olivia is a syndicated advice columnist living and working in Washington, D.C. She is moving to New York to accept a promotion and pursue her publishing dreams. Before doing so, though, she makes a trip back to her hometown of Apple Station, Virginia, to visit her dad and spend a week of rest and relaxation, catching up with her friends and enjoying the town’s spring festival. One planned highlight of her trip is the planting of her father’s annual summer garden.

Much of the description of the father-daughter garden, from the drawn-out map that Olivia’s dad makes to the mythology of the habaneros, stems from my own life. For me, planting a garden with my dad was a day of wellness I looked forward to every year. Though it was back-breaking work, often in ninety-degree heat, I wouldn’t trade those days and memories for anything. Planting those seedlings every year would bear fruit (and vegetables!) in all the days that followed, as watching the garden flourish brought much joy to my dad’slife.

Though we can’t always take an entire day for ease (though we should try for one occasionally), we can spend a few moments daily to support our own wellness. Allow yourself some humanity. Savor your coffee or tea, enjoy the sun shining through the window, or curl up and read a cozy!

Today, I’m celebrating my book’s birthday, and so I’m going to be sure to approach the day with ease. I will walk by the garden where I have so many fond memories of my dad, grateful for those days of wellness.

What are you going to do today to support your wellness?

Happy reading!

~ REVELL READS BLOG TOUR STOP ~ --  'DEADLY TARGET'  -- AUTHOR ELIZABETH GODDARD~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight +Link to Excerpt Courtesy of thePublisher, Author Bio & Review~

ABOUT THE BOOK:

This cold case has suddenly warmed up.
She only hopes they won't get burned.

Nathan Campbell's father was investigating such a case when he was shot, and now Nathan needs to enlist Erin's help to solve the case. She's certainly good at what she does. The only problem? She's his ex.

As the two dig deeper, it becomes clear that they, too, are being targeted--and the answers to their questions are buried deep within the past Erin struggles to explain and longs to forget.

What people are saying about Present Danger:

MY REVIEW:

If I were asked to use only one word to describe this book, I would use the word, 'complicated' . The characters are complicated, and the relationships between the characters are complicated. The settings are complicated, and the plot is very complicated. All of these complex elements add up to give readers a suspenseful, enjoyable thrill ride from page one to the final sentence. The lead woman in this story, Erin Larson, and her mother, Celia, are harboring secrets from their respective pasts. Deep, dark secrets which are agonizingly exposed as the story moves on from one stressful event to another.
Nathan Campbell is a stand-up guy who works as a police detective in a small-town in Montana. He is loyal, dedicated, and determined in his search to figure out who and what are behind the traumas which seem to be befalling everyone around him . . .
Through the support and encouragement of a few good friends, Erin and Nathan unravel the whole hidden story reaching back to events from years ago and leading up to the present.
The faith element in this novel was strong with examples of prayer and spiritual thoughts of the characters sprinkled throughout the story. The book is completely clean in language and content.
Highly-recommended to fans of Christian/clean romantic suspense, Christian/clean thrillers, Christian/clean romance, and Christian/clean psychological thrillers.
I received a paperback copy of this book from the publisher through the Revell Reads Blogger Program. All of my comments and opinions shared here are solely my own.

~ MMGM JOHN MUIR BIOGRAPHY ~

  🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍  ~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY BIOGRAPHY FEATURE ~ --  ' J OHN MUIR:  MY LIFE WITH NATURE'  --  AUTHOR JOSEPH CORNELL~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight,Author Bio & Review~

🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍

🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍

ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:

John Muir's remarkable adventures and attunement with nature are told in his own words, edited for a young audience. His joyous enthusiasm for nature comes through powerfully. The book includes "explore more" activities.

 🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍🌲🌏🌳🌎🌄🌍

MORE ABOUT THE BOOK {from the author's website}:

This unique “autobiography” of John Muir is told in his own words, brimming with his spirit and his adventures. The text was selected and retold by naturalist Joseph Cornell, author of the classic Sharing Nature with Children. The result is a book with a aliveness, a presence of goodness, adventure, enthusiasm, and sensitive love of each animal and plant that will give young adults an experience of a true hero. It is a book that expands your sense of hope, adventure, and awareness. Adults will be just as fond of this book as young readers. Cornell includes numerous “explore more” activities that help the reader to understand and appreciate Muir’s many wonderful qualities.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from the author's website}:

From his earliest years, Joseph Cornell felt a sensitive attunement with the mysteries and beauties of nature. As a boy, he spent much time exploring the marshes, orchards, and mountains near his home in northern California. During the early 1970s, he designed his own Bachelor of Science degree program in nature awareness at California State University at Chico.

The nature awareness methods featured in Cornell’s Sharing Nature Book Series are used by millions of parents, educators, naturalists, and youth and religious leaders all over the world. Mr. Cornell’s second book, Listening to Nature, has inspired thousands of adults to deepen their relationship with nature.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service selected his first book, Sharing Nature with Children®, as one of the 15 most influential books—published from 1890 to today—that has connected children to nature. Other authors honored in the exhibit include Rachel Carson and Ernest Thompson Seton.

Cornell’s highly effective outdoor learning strategy, Flow Learning™, was featured by the U.S. National Park Service as one of five recommended learning theories, along with the work of Maria Montessori, Howard Gardner, John Dewey, and Jean Piaget.

Joseph Cornell is the founder and president of Sharing Nature Worldwide, one of the planet’s most popular and influential environmental education programs. He is the honorary president of Japan Nature Game Association that has 10,000 trained Sharing Nature leaders and 224 regional associations. Japan’s national elementary science curriculum promotes Sharing Nature experiences as a way to help students “get close to nature” and “love nature.”

Mr. Cornell has received many international awards for his Sharing Nature books and work. He has received the prestigious Countess Sonja-Bernadotte Prize in Germany for his vast influence on environmental education in Central Europe, and the Honorary Award from the Hungarian Society for Environmental Education for his "service as a role model for educators worldwide." In 2011 Cornell was selected as one of the “100 biggest opinion leaders committed to the Environment” by the French organization, Anges Gardiens de la Planète.

Joseph frequently travels and speaks to groups in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the South Pacific. The National Association for Interpretation said that Cornell’s books “sparked a worldwide revolution in nature education” and “his expertise, irrepressible enthusiasm, blend of knowledge and warmth creates an atmosphere for learning that is very contagious.”

MY REVIEW:

This informative book is chock full of information about the inspiring naturalist, John Muir. I had the good fortune to visit the home of John Muir and his wife and daughters in Martinez, California, many years ago. It is a beautiful farmhouse with peaceful surroundings. This book gives an in-depth view into this unique man and his impact on conservation in our nation.

The majority of the chapters are a biography of John Muir taken from the naturalist's own writings. The author mentions in his 'Note From the Author' preceding the text of the book informs readers:

"To stay true to the spirit of Muir as clearly and fully as possible, I have told his story as if he were alive, using his own words and colorful expressions as often as possible." (pg.4)

The book also includes many of Muir's sketches and journal entries. There are a lot of historical photographs of the naturalist on his many adventures as well as photographs of Yosemite and Mt. Shasta, his wife and daughters, and members of the Sierra Club which he co-founded in 1892.

The back matter of the book entitled, 'Explore More', includes extension activities to get youngsters motivated to examine nature and think like John Muir did regarding nature and conservation. There is a list of his longer journeys around the world along with a world map that plots out these trips. There is a chronology of John Muir's life and a Further Reading list.

Highly-recommended! I borrowed this book from the children's collection at the local public library.

The BIGGEST Kiki book yet!

Introducing the Miss Fits, ordinary women who do extra-ordinary things!Every holiday season, Kiki Lowenstein plans 12 days of classes, her Holiday Craft Extravaganza. And every year, it nearly kills her.

This year is no exception. As the holiday season approaches, Kiki over-schedules herself and winds up running herself ragged. To make life even more stressful, she must fend off a stalker, a man determined to possess the object of his affection. But that's only one problem.

Kiki's ace full-time employee, Clancy, has HUGE decisions to make. How do you put aside your hurt and disappointment when you've been betrayed? Why should you upend your whole life because of another person's mistake? Is it selfish to think of yourself first? As Clancy ponders questions, Kiki stands on the sidelines, knowing this is not her choice to make. And yet...Kiki feels Clancy's agony.

Meanwhile, both of Kiki's older kids are having problems with teachers. Kiki wonders, "At what point does being an involved parent tip over into being a helicopter parent?" There's also a staff shortage that leaves Kiki in the lurch, both at home and at the store. Kiki might have found an answer to that dilemma when a mysterious woman applies for a job. Her name is Nona, and she claims to be an old friend of an old friend. But is she?

Nona seems too good to be true. Sadly, that might be the least of Kiki's problems with the woman. Because Nona isn't what she seems to be. Nona is a Miss Fit.

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Hidden Danger by Jerusha Agen, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK  Hidden Danger Title:  Hidden Danger Series:  Guardians Unleashed #1 Author:  Jerusha Agen Publisher:  SDG Words Release Date:  November 8, 2021 Genre:  Christian Romantic Suspense
The greatest threat to this K-9 team is the one they don't see coming.
Cora Isaksson’s guilt has shadowed her life ever since drugs ensnared her brother and he disappeared. When Bradley suddenly returns, Cora and her narcotics detection K-9 are thrust into a battle against the drug cartel that wants him back.
DEA Special Agent Kent Thomson has his own personal reasons for bringing justice to the cartel. Cora and her drug-sniffing K-9 will only get in his way. Or are they assets that will enable him to right the wrongs of the past?
When the cartel targets Cora, she and Kent join forces with her teammates at the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency to end the cartel before it ends her. They’re prepared for danger, but when more lives than their own hang in the balance, can they trust God for the rescue that’s out of their reach?  EXCERPT:

Cora’s pulse jerked with her arm when Jana tugged hard to the right. The golden retriever never pulled on her leash unless she caught scent of one of two things—narcotics or a human in need of rescue.

Jana tugged toward a black suitcase parked upright next to a man in the baggage claim of Minneapolis International Airport.

“Get that dog away from my luggage.” The middle-aged, heavyset man had a smudge of dark hairs on his head and a long, sagging mustache that shaped his mouth into a severe frown.

Cora’s mind raced. She and Jana were off the clock, finished logging in their hours searching for narcotics at Departures. The usual TSA officer who accompanied her had left, and Cora had handed in her radio for the day.

But Jana sat next to the man’s suitcase and aimed her big brown eyes up at Cora.

 She’d found drugs.

Never Too Late JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Never Too Late   by Susan L. Tuttle, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK  Never Too Late Title:  Never Too Late
Series:  Along Came Love #3
Author:  Susan L. Tuttle
Publisher:  Iron Stream Media
Release Date:  November 2, 2021
Genre: Inspirational Contemporary Romance
Once, her art brought her fame. This time will it bring her love?
Widowed homemaker Rachael Stark isn’t quite sure what comes after her only child leaves for college. To fill her suddenly quiet hours and scrawny bank account, she needs a job. But painful memories prevent her from resurrecting her former art career, and motherhood isn't much of a résumé. When her best friend needs help recovering from a gunshot wound that occurred in the line of duty, she is there. Finally, someone to take care of.
Evan Wayne won't let his injury keep him from being a police officer. His dedication to protect the innocent stems from the guilt he carries over having failed his childhood friend. What he needs now is to recover and get back on the streets. Instead, he's handed a myriad of light-duty tasks by his captain―one of which involves heading up the department's entry into the town's annual mural contest. He's not an artist, but he definitely knows one. And he'll take any excuse to spend more time with her.
When Rachael agrees to paint for Evan, she never expects to also be drawn into finding answers for the mother of a missing child. As the two friends work side by side on the mural and the case, their feelings move beyond friendship. But with Evan unwilling to leave his dangerous job, and Rachael unwilling to risk another loss of a loved one, their fears may paint over the promise of a beautiful future together.  EXCERPT:

He strolled away from her and stopped by a painting of a massive dahlia, one of her favorite flowers. This had been her first attempt at something so detailed. She’d used saturated merlot tones with highlights of claret along the dips and curves of its individually cupped leaves. Chris challenged her to create it—and she had, with Gavin at school and Brianna napping nearby. Her agent, Lanette, took her on because of the promise she saw there. And Jonah hung it when he purchased her the space.

Evan peered over his shoulder at her. “I can see why they called you the next Georgia O’Keefe.”

“You actually know who she is?”

“Sure. A famous painter known for her enlarged flowers.” He turned. “I may have looked her up after googling you and seeing the comparison. Personally, I think yours are better.”

She was a little stuck on the fact he’d googled her and a whole lot stuck on the fact he liked her old paintings. “You may be a little biased.”

His smile fired off nerves inside like those crazy trick candles. She kept trying to snuff out the sparks, but they kept firing right back up. “Maybe.”

It’s Christmastime in Tinsel Town, and there’s plenty of ho-ho-homicide at the soon-to-open Santa’s Magic theme park, where bodies are dropping like snowflakes. Former pop star Sandy Fairfax has a killer job—he’s the emcee for the televised Miss North Pole beauty contest--er, scholarship pageant. But will the beautiful contestants make his girlfriend jealous? Or will she join him in his sleuthing? The deadly Christmas season begins at a celebrity bowling tournament when a pinsetter plops down a body instead of the pins. Throw in surfing Santas, a seductive executive's wife, a sleazy tabloid editor, an egotistical movie rival and a gift-wrapped death trap, and it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

EXCERPT:

(Sandy is on stage, rehearsing with the pageant contestants)

I glanced at the cue cards. The writers had no doubt penned my quips while drinking in a West Hollywood bar. My next line made me choke, but I obediently read it with as much passion as I could muster. “Well, Summer, sounds as if you’ll be busy buying quite a few presents this year for all of your folks. And when you’re not cracking the books at the university, what hobbies do you enjoy?”

Her lovely blue eyes gazed out past the camera and onto the cue cards that were flipped as she talked. “I have many interests, Sandy. I love taking long walks on the beach and collecting jazz albums and trying out new recipes and—”

We never heard about her other hobbies. Summer abruptly froze and gasped, as if choking. She threw her head and shoulders back. Her mouth hung open. Her eyes dilated. She pitched forward. I grabbed Summer just before she hit the floor. I knelt, put my mic on the stage, and set the girl down on her back. Her arms and legs were limp.

I was in shock. “Somebody call a doctor!”

“What’s going on down there?” Guy was in the control booth. His voice boomed—in stereo—over the loudspeakers along the wall.

I pressed my fingers against Summer’s neck. “I don’t feel a pulse!”

“Sandy, what are you doing? Tell Summer to stand up.”

Of course, Guy couldn’t hear me from inside the booth. I picked up my microphone and shouted into it. “Summer needs a doctor, now!”

Guy muttered some raw language and then declared that he was leaving his heavenly throne to join the peons on the floor. What he actually said was, “I’m coming down.”

“Call an ambulance before you do!” I added, before I put the mic on the floor.

But the poor girl was beyond hope. Summer’s head was twisted to one side. I reached behind her neck to move her head into a more dignified position. I felt a bump on her skin. I rotated her head to investigate.

A tiny red welt stood out against her light skin.

The other contestant started to rushed onto the stage. I ordered them to stay back. The sight of a dead body might start a panic and raise some awkward questions that I couldn’t answer.

“What happened?” “Is she sick?” “Did she faint?” The girls kept their distance, but peppered me with questions.

I lied. “She . . . she passed out.”

Captain Lyons stormed in from the wings and stood over me. “Mr. Gower radioed me. I rushed right over. Is there a problem?”

“I would say so.” I kept my voice low so the contestants wouldn’t hear me. “Summer Attenbergis dead.”

“You’re qualified to make a medical diagnosis?”

“Does she look alive to you?”

Lyons dropped to one knee and examined the body. “What did you say her name was?”

“Summer Attenberg. She is—was—one of the Miss North Pole contestants. That’s all I know about her.”

Lyons eyed me. “Didn’t I see you on Sunday at the bowling alley when the actor died?”

“Well, yes, but that was just a coincidence.”

“I’ll be the judge of that. Seems odd that whenever you show up on the lot, something suspicious happens. Stand up.” As there was nothing more either of us could do to help Summer, we both got on our feet. “Tell me what happened.”

“The two of us were standing here talking, and she collapsed.”

“Did you strike her?”

“No! I never touched her. And there’s an odd red lump on her neck.”

“What do you mean?”

“Take a look.”

Lyons squatted again, ran her fingers along the body’s neck and stood. “It looks like a pimple.”

“Excuse me, captain, but girls in beauty contests do not have zits.”

“It could be an insect bite or an allergic reaction to something she ate.”

“Then how do you explain a perfectly healthy young girl dying in ten seconds?”

“Perhaps she had an undisclosed medical condition that might have disqualify her from the pageant. As for you,Mr. Fairfax, I’m still waiting to hear how you managed to show up alongside a second body in less than a week.”

“I broke a mirror and got seven years of bad luck.”

Guy had finally descended from the heavens to join us. “Glen says the police and paramedics are on their way.” Hetook a long look at the body, then stared at the contestants huddled at the far side of the stage. Guy finally got his brain working and dismissed us for the rest of the day, butsaid we should return tomorrow at our regular call time.

“Aren’t you canceling the pageant?” I asked. Not only would that be the proper thing to do out of respect for the deceased, butwould also get me away from the looney director.

“No reason why we should,” said Guy. “We can’t stop production just because one contestant has a health condition.”

“This young lady has a death condition!” I said.

Lyons spotted the cameras, then turned to the director. “I need to see the footage of the girl falling down.”

“Sorry, captain,” said Guy. “This is just a rehearsal. We’re not recording.”

Lyons eyed me. “So, we only have your word on what happened.”

This seemed like a good time to involve my Fifth Amendment right to remain silent, so I said nothing.

~ MMGM CAMPING FOR KIDS ~

  🌲📷🌄🔥🔎🌳🎣🌲📷🌄🔥🔎🌳🎣 ~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY NON-FICTION FEATURE ~ --  'CAMPING FOR KIDS'  -- AUTHOR MELANIE A. HOWARD~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight, Author Bio & Review~   🌲📷🌄🔥🔎🌳🎣🌲📷🌄🔥🔎🌳🎣
        🌲📷🌄🔥🔎 🌳🎣 🌲📷🌄🔥🔎 🌳🎣

ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:

As you roast a marshmallow, the sunset paints the sky in beautiful shades of red. Countless breathtaking encounters with nature are just waiting to be found. Are you ready for a trip into the great outdoors? Now is your chance to learn what you need to know about camping history, gear, safety, and more.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR, MELANIE A. HOWARD {from the publisher's website}:

Melanie Howard has been writing for children for more than 10 years. She enjoys learning new skills and has worked at a variety of jobs. She taught art in Guatemala and English in Spain. Her love of books also led her to be a bookstore clerk and an editor. Melanie teaches creative writing through community education in her home town of Hastings, Minnesota. She is on the lookout for her next big adventure.

MY REVIEW:

This colorful paperback includes five informative chapters:  Out in the Wild; Packed Up and Ready to Go; From Bear Bags to Bandages; We're Here, Now What?; and Leave No Trace.

Historic photographs of people camping and current photographs of young people in various camping settings make this an engaging non-fiction read for middle-graders and adults alike.

Each chapter includes sidebars hosting vocabulary words and definitions and trivia and helpful hints about camping. The sections on what to bring along if you're going camping deep into the wilderness and a list of what first-aid kits should contain were especially informative.

Readers are encouraged to move outside of their homes to explore plants, animals, trees, rocks, etc., in natural settings. I found this nudge from the author to be inspiring and feel it will help reluctant readers or readers who are simply not familiar with camping to give it a try.

Back matter includes a Glossary, a Read More book list, a safe Internet Sites FactHound link to reach internet sites which have been checked out by the publisher's staff, and an Index.

There are several other books in this 'Into the Great Outdoors' series by Edge Books, four of which are about hunting. The other title that appealed to me was 'Freshwater Fishing for Kids'.

Recommended for school and public libraries, scouting and youth groups, and families.
