~ MIDDLE-GRADE S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ --  'A FOREST IN THE CITY'  -- AUTHOR ANDREA CURTISILLUSTRATOR PIERRE PRATT
🌲🌳🍁🍂🍃🌲🌳🍁🍂🍃🌲🌳🍁

🌲🌳🍁🍂🍃🌲🌳🍁🍂🍃🌲🌳🍁  ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:

“Imagine a city draped in a blanket of green … Is this the city you know?”

This book of narrative non-fiction looks at the urban forest, starting with a bird’s-eye view of the tree canopy, then swooping down to street level, digging deep into the ground, then moving up through a tree’s trunk, back into the leaves and branches.

It discusses the problems that city trees face, such as the abundance of concrete, poor soil, and challenging light conditions. It traces the history of trees in cities over time, showing how industrialization and the growth of populations in urban centers led to the creation of places like Central Park in New York City, where people could enjoy nature and clean air. It wasn’t until Dutch Elm disease swept across North America, killing hundreds of thousands of trees, that people realized how important trees are to our cities.

So how can we create a healthy environment for city trees? Some urban foresters are trying to create better growing conditions using specially designed soil trenches or planters, they are planting diverse species to reduce the harm of invasive pests, and they are maintaining trees as they age, among a number of other strategies.
The urban forest is a complex ecosystem, and we are a part of it. Trees make our cities more beautiful and provide shade but they also fight climate change and pollution, benefit our health and connections to one another, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and much more. It is vital that we nurture our city forests.

Includes a list of activities to help the urban forest and a glossary.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR {from his website}:

Being born in 1962 isn’t easy, but that’s exactly what Pierre Pratt did, on a February 8th. Little by little, he began to grow. Like any growing artist, he drew the objects around him, the people he met, in the quiet atmosphere of his little room, his face a mask of perfect concentration. He still retains that expression. He studied graphic design at Ahuntsic College in Montreal. At the beginning of the 1980s, he began drawing small comic strips. Then he turned to illustration. He did his apprenticeship with several different magazines in Quebec. Since 1990, he has been illustrating (and also writing) books for children, some 50 by now. He has won several prizes, including the Governor-General’s Award of Canada three times, a Golden Apple and a Golden Platein Bratislava, a Totem at the Montreuil Salon du Livre in France, a UNICEF Prize in Bologna, the Boston Globe Horn Book Award, the Elizabeth Cleaver Prize, the Mr. Christie Book Award, and the TD Children’s Literature Award. In 2008 he represented Canada for the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award.

MY THOUGHTS:

This book is the the first installment of the publisher's 'ThinkCities' series. The picture book format of this book is perfect for the subject matter and the art work included with its covers.

This book covers earth science, environmental science, history of trees, botany, city planning, engineering, public health, and sociology. There is so much information included in this book that it will make a perfect thematic unit of study for a middle-grade classroom.

The author begins by explaining why cities are difficult places for trees to thrive and to even survive. Lack of rainwater, pollution, heat, and lack of sunlight all contribute to the challenges trees must overcome in order to flourish in 'our concrete jungles'. (page 4)

The illustrator's artwork effectively supports the author's narrative. I really liked the manner in which he drew a forest and a city street as a 'slice' drawing showing the ground beneath these areas.

Here's a link to the publisher's website which shows three pages from the book: BOOK'S PAGE ON PUBLISHER'S WEBSITE

This book is rich with higher-level vocabulary, beautiful illustrations of diverse citizens living together in diverse communities, and excellent Back Matter. 'Speak for the trees!' is a section after the main narrative which encourages readers to be advocates for trees in their home communities. The 'Glossary' includes many scientific terms used in the book. 'Selected Sources' includes several websites where students and teachers will find more information on the subject.

Note: On the publisher's website the grade level recommendation for this book is: Grades 3-7.

Highly-recommended for teachers, librarians, families, scout groups, and adults who want to learn a lot about the how and why trees don't survive in the city.

I borrowed this book from the 'New Arrivals' shelf in the local public library.

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ -- 'SMITHSONIAN MAKER LAB OUTDOORS: 25 SUPER COOL PROJECTS TO BUILD,  INVENT, CREATE, DISCOVER' -- Written by Author Jack Challoner

LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS
ABOUT THE BOOK: {from Goodreads}:
Twenty-eight science projects and experiments to be done outside will spark kids' creativity and help them develop science skills through hands-on learning.

Projects focus on Earth and the environment, plants and animals, rocks and minerals, and space, bringing science learning home and into the backyard. Young scientists can make a cave system and find out about underground rivers, construct a working model of tectonic plates and learn about earthquakes, build a telescope and look to the planets and stars, and more.

Supporting STEAM education initiatives and the Maker Movement, Maker Lab: Outdoors includes 25 interactive projects to inspire kids' creativity and their scientific side, and, as the founder of Maker Faire Dale Dougherty says, "to realize with their hands what they can imagine in their minds."

With stunning photography, succinct step-by-step instructions, and detailed explanations, Maker Lab: Outdoors takes readers on a journey of discovery. A must-have for every young scientist curious about their surroundings, and for makers, crafters, and those who enjoy exploring the outdoors.

MY REVIEW:This book is such a fabulous resource for individuals who teach and work with middle-graders! The book is divided into four thematic chapters:  Nature Watch, World of Weather, Water Power, and Earth and Sky. There are several projects in each chapter.
I cannot say enough about the quality of the projects in this book. From the very first project--'How to Build a Periscope'--to the last project--'Paper Sundial'--these are engaging, useful, fun projects for middle-graders and adults alike!
In addition to the project photos and instructions, there is an introduction to each 'how to' sharing the science behind the DIY activity. The 'Wormery' project extends the idea of the project to the 'real-world science' of composting. The 'Soil-Free Planter' extends to aquaponics. The 'Brilliant Barometer' extends to meteorology and isobars. You get the picture.
Two of my favorite projects are the 'How to Grow Mycelium' in the Nature Watch chapter and the 'Anemometer' in the World of Weather chapter. The mycelium-in-a-jar project is unique; I've never seen it in any other science manual or STEAM education book before.
The author has done an excellent job of explaining difficult theories in interesting, yet down-to-earth terms. The projects are clever and are supported with user-friendly stepped-out instructions with photos. Makers are encouraged to use recycled goods from around the house, i.e. plastic bottles, cardboard, glass jars, shoe boxes, etc.
Back matter includes templates for the projects, a thorough glossary, and an index.
Highly-recommended for teachers, science camp counselors, parents/grandparents/care-givers, and teens and adults interested in upping their own science knowledge! {I'll admit I learned a lot about fungus/spores/mushrooms, weather, and aquaponics.}
I borrowed this book from the 'new book' shelves in the children's section of my local public library.   📕📗📘📙📕📗📘📙📕📗📘📙📕📗📘📙📕📗📘  POST #3: ⛰💎🪨🌎 ⛰💎🪨🌎 ⛰💎🪨🌎 ~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADE
MONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~
--  'ROCK COLLECTING FOR KIDS: An Introduction to Geology'  -- AUTHOR DAN R. LYNCH~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight & Review~

LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS   ABOUT THE BOOK (FROM GOODREADS):

Nature's treasures are just beneath our feet, waiting to be discovered.
With this book, you'll experience the excitement of finding, collecting, and identifying rocks and minerals. Dan R. Lynch, author of many field guides, presents a children's introduction to our amazing Earth. The book begins with geology basics, such as where rocks come from and how Earth's surface changes over time. Next, young readers are provided with an identification guide, which features full-color photographs and ID tips on 75 types of common and collectible rocks and minerals. From there, a "how to" section includes details on what to look for, where to look, and what to bring, as well as safety considerations. With rock collecting guidelines that the whole family will learn from and enjoy, this fun guide is engaging and informative--with plenty of kid-appeal--as it starts children on the path toward becoming successful rock collectors!
MY THOUGHTS:
This S.T.E.A.M. handbook begins with an introduction to geology and quickly moves into the history of our earth from a geological standpoint. I thought the landforms and tectonics plates section was especially interesting since I live in California where there has been a major earthquake and many small ones in our region during my lifetime.  The weathering section discusses the power of water, rain, wind, waves, and ice and how these phenomenons wear down rocks. Spectacular photos of the Grand Canyon and rock arches in Wyoming give readers an understanding of this concept.

The author moves on to caves, sinkholes/cenotes/and more, glaciers, and rock formations. After reading this book I feel I have a greater understanding of why our country and world look the way they do!

The chapter on minerals culminates with a Minerals Hardness Scale that I found fascinating. The author cleverly includes non-mineral items which provide the reader a method of comparing the things they are familiar with to various minerals. For example, 2.5 on the hardness scale shows a fingernail; 3.5 shows a US nickel (coin), 5.0 shows a steel knife. In between these numbers various minerals are listed ending with diamonds being the hardest mineral on Earth.
Next we move into the rocks chapter. Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are defined in detail with thumbnail photos of where these types of rocks are found in nature. There are some beautiful photos along with a detailed diagram of volcanoes to go along with the igneous rock section.

The rest of the book is dedicated to rock identification techniques and rock collecting for middle-graders, tweens, and teens. In this section I especially enjoyed reviewing the color-coded range maps for common rocks and with a separate map for common minerals. These features give readers a glance at where the rocks they want to collect can be found in North America. Both sections contain a photo and a blurb of common rocks and minerals including the phonetic pronunciation of the names of the more difficult names.
Lastly, the highlight of the book--in my humble opinion--is the chapter on agates, fossils, and dyed crystals. The photos of the agates and fossils are stunning! I liked the ways in which the author warned young collectors about purchasing items they may find in rock shops which are not what they appear to be.

The FAQ section on rock collecting contains tips on the storage and labeling of rocks, safety tips when out rock collecting, etc. The other back matter includes a thorough glossary, recommended reading lists for 'kids' and 'older readers', and several pages of a 'Rocks and Mineral Journal' young collectors can use to record their adventures and findings.

Other pluses of this guide:

--Size = field guide sized

--Photography = excellent, close-ups

--Maps/diagrams = color-coded, well-labeled, good detail, easy-to-read and understand
Highly recommended to scientists of all ages! A useful resource book to teachers, librarians, scout leaders, youth group leaders, camp leaders, parents, grandparents, middle-graders, tweens, and teens.
I borrowed this book from the non-fiction shelves in the children's section of the local public library. ⛰💎🪨🌎 ⛰💎🪨🌎 ⛰💎🪨🌎

Two murders on the same strip of Worth Avenue in Palm Beach means dog bakery owner Samantha Armstrong and her fellow shopkeepers have reached their quota of bad stuff. Right?

They should be so lucky…

Samantha is thrilled that life in her new hometown has finally settled into a fun, peaceful rhythm. Canine Confections’ business is on the upswing, and her days are filled with jogs on the beach with her pooch Sweet Pea, cozy time with Aunt Mary on her aunt’s estate, and yummy treats at her upscale dog bakery. But things are not peaceful for long when Donna from the local gossip magazine, Pulse on Palm Beach, winds up dead at Samantha’s first foray into catering a millionaire dog’s birthday party.

Once again, Samantha finds herself smack dab in the middle of the investigation. But this time, it’s another reporter from Pulse that’s making her center-stage. With the aid of her precious Sweet Pea, Samantha pads around the splashy Worth Avenue sniffing out clues. Unfortunately, the more she searches, the more suspects she finds. And it doesn’t help that Angelina from Mystic Dreams has hired a psychic who warns that trouble in Palm Beach isn’t about to end anytime soon.

Includes an original recipe from the world-famous Three Dog Bakery!

Excerpt :

Like a bad penny that never fails to show no matter how much you wish for a silver dollar, Dick appeared across the street Two occasions of dipping my toes back into the dating pool after my old boyfriend broke my heart back in Sun Haven, and I was already wanting to go full-on up to my ankles with this guy. “Snowball, you’re going to have to play nice if you want to live here,” I said, hearing the empty threat in my words and knowing there was zero chance we would ever give the cat away just because we had a learning curve on how to make this work. Now that I didn’t have to worry as much about my income stream, I could think about other things…sweeter things…like Peanut Butter Clusters and PupCakes The furry girl and I were whizzing along Ocean Avenue for another day of work in paradise. “It’s not my fault you’re a magnet for murder.” Aunt Mary in spandex was one thing. Trumble in spandex was a good reason to wash my eyes out with battery acid. A few months ago, when I lived in Sun Haven, I didn’t run into a murderer once, far as I know. This town was rife with them.

🐾🐶🐕🐾🐶🐕🐾🐶🐕About Amy Hueston

Amy Hueston’s Canine Confections mystery series has an abundance of dogs and pastries, two of her favorite things. When she isn’t writing her latest mystery or suspense, she can often be found either singing professionally or petting the nearest dog.

🐾🐶🐕🐾🐶🐕🐾🐶🐕

The more I write, the less I read, it seems. And that’s not how this was supposed to go down. Also, not that I’m on technology much, but if there’s a choice between checking my Facebook notifications or reading a few pages of a book, guess which I do?

And I don’t like it so much. I don’t like knowing that social media knows my brain so well. I WANT to put the effort into diving into a new book, getting to know the characters, CARING about what happens to them. It’s such a richer experience for me.

Don’t get me wrong. I love, love, love meeting and connecting on social media with so many people, both old friends and new. And I’m still going to do it, because it’s THAT much fun.

But I think maybe I’ll light my fireplace, gather my dogs on the couch with me, and dig into one of the books in the pile sitting right here.

How about you? What are your thoughts on reading books, magazines even, spending time on social media? I’d love to hear what you have to say.

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY NON-FICTION FEATURE ~ --  'THE U.S. COAST GUARD'  -- A BOOK IN LERNER PUBLICATION'S'U.S. ARMED FORCES' SERIES FORYOUNG READERSAUTHOR MICHAEL BENSON~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight,Author Bio & My Review~  🚤🚢🚩🚁🌊 🚤🚢🚩🚁🌊

They operate search and rescue missions, stop boats that are smuggling illegal drugs or aliens into the country, and help during wars and natural disasters. This comprehensive book details the history, recruiting, training, and daily life of the U.S. Coast Guard.

MY REVIEW:

I found this book in the local library's online catalog when I was searching for research materials for an adult novel I am planning for the future. I like to do some of my research for my adult fiction by reading children's non-fiction because the information is packaged in a concise, no-nonsense fashion, and the books often include a list of web resources for further perusal. The older generations in my family were members of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps. I have a good background in those branches of the military, but I wanted to learn more about the U.S. Coast Guard. This book was chock full of details about the history of this branch of the military which was established on August 4th, 1790, and was originally named the 'Revenue Cutter Service.' The U.S. Coast Guard has bases located on all United States shores:  Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes.
In 1878, the U. S. Government created the 'U.S. Life-Saving Service' to help boaters on U.S. waterways. This service rescued passengers of ships that had been wrecked or were sinking.
In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Life-Saving Service were combined into one service--the U.S. Coast Guard.
In 1928 the service began using seaplanes for patrolling and for performing rescue missions.
In 1976, the Coast Guard Academy became the first U.S. military academy to admit women. Graduates from this academy become officers.
In 2003, President George W. Bush established the Department of Homeland Security. The U.S. Coast Guard became a part of this new department.
I was surprised to learn about the scope of the U.S. Coast Guard's responsibilities: It assists the U.S. Navy during wartime;It helps with homeland security;
Performs search-and-rescue missions;Keeps people safe during natural disasters at sea such as hurricanes;Stops boats that are operating illegally; and
Breaks up ice on U.S. waterways. Although this book was published in 2005, I felt it gave me the type of background information I was looking for. The statistics as far as salary amounts, demographics on the individuals who join this branch of the U.S. military, etc., are dated. However, the basic facts and the photographs are valuable resources for young learners.  The excellent back matter includes a glossary, a timeline, web resources, and an index. Recommended for classroom teachers, librarians, and families who are in this branch of the military or any other branch of military. ❓❓❓❓ Do you have a friend or a relative who was or is in the U.S. Coast Guard?

Welcome to the Blog Blitz for The Paramedic's Forever Family by Tanya Agler, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

 🌷🌹🌻🌼🌷🌹🌻🌼🌷🌹🌻🌼🌷

ABOUT THE BOOK  The Paramedic's Forever Family Title:  The Paramedic's Forever Family  Series:  Smoky Mountain First Responders #2 Author:  Tanya Agler Publisher:  Harlequin Heartwarming Release Date:  March 29, 2022 Genre:  Sweet Contemporary Romance
Sometimes “good friends”
Just isn't enough…
Bachelor paramedic Mason Ruddick doesn't know what he'd do without Lindsay Hudson. The widowed mom is his sounding board, his neighbor and, since the death of her husband and his best friend, his lifeline. Only lately, Mason can't stop noticing just how beautiful and special Lindsay is. Or how often he thinks about her. Now Mason's heart is caught between the best friend he lost…and the one he's falling for.  EXCERPT:

“Need any help?”

Lindsay jumped at the sound of Mason’s low husky voice behind her. “You scared me.”

“Sorry about that, but you’re just the person I was looking for.”

Oh no, not again. Her jaw clenched, and she loaded a plank on the platform with a thud and quickly added the rest. “Not you, too? Let me guess. There’s a new paramedic or firefighter in town, and you’re convinced he’d be perfect for me. No thank you. Even if I wanted to get involved with someone again, and I don’t, I would never date a first responder.”

Even one as handsome as Mason.

Today’s red tie-dyed T-shirt brought out the auburn glints in his thick wavy hair. She caught herself and blinked away that pesky thought.

“How many more planks? Can I do anything to make your life easier? Say the word and it’s done.” Mason pulled out another plank, and she stopped his hand with hers.

“I also need gravel, which is in a different aisle. See you at the fence tonight.”

🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY HISTORICALFICTION FEATURE ~ --  'MISS HAPPINESS & MISS FLOWER'  -- AUTHOR RUMER GODDEN~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight,Author Bio & My Review~  🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎

 🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎🎎

ABOUT THE BOOK {from the Author's Literary Trust Website}:

England is the last place Nona Fells wants to be.

No one asked her if she wanted to leave sunny India to live in a chilly English village with her aunt’s family – and her cousin, Belinda, just hates her! But when two dainty Japanese dolls arrive at Nona’s doorstep, everything begins to change.

Like Nona, Miss Happiness and Miss Flower are lonely and homesick, so Nona decides to build them their own traditional Japanese house.

Over time, not only does Nona create a home for the dolls, but one for herself as well.

Originally published in 1961, Rumer Godden’s classic story of friendship and being part of a family is now back in print for a new generation of readers to cherish.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from the Author's Literary Trust Website}:

Rumer Godden was born in Sussex in 1907 but, at six months old, was taken out to India where her father ran a Steam Navigation company so that she and her three sisters spent most of their childhood on the banks of the great rivers of Assam and Bengal (now Bangladesh) where they lived in Narayangunj, a jute trading town.

They had a halcyon childhood. “I always thank God,” wrote Rumer, “that we did not have sensible parents”. This childhood time gave her real love of India that is so obvious in her writing.

She could never remember a time when she did not write. There were no libraries or schools or bookshops in this remote place so the sisters wrote their own. It was a good thing their father said that there were plenty of wastepaper baskets in the house.

The dreaded day came and the girls were sent back to England which felt anything like home and were sent to boarding school – too late. They were twelve and fourteen and could not settle. They went to five schools in two years!

Rumer Godden trained as a dancer in London and then went back to India where she ran a mixed race dancing school. She married and lived in Calcutta.

She returned to Britain for the birth of her two daughters and the publication of Black Narcissus which was met with great acclaim.

Back in India she continued with her dancing school and parted from her husband.

This was now wartime and it was not possible to go back to England so she took her two small daughters to Kashmir where, as she had no money, she rented a little Kashmiri house far in the country by the Dal Lake where they lived cheaply like the local Indians.

The house had no electricity, no running water and no road up to it. It was a full life. She had not only to look after the children but to teach them and to try earning a living by writing and running a herb farm but, as she wrote, “these were years of beauty and contentment”.

Rumer returned to England in 1947 and lived in various houses both in London, Buckinghamshire and Sussex and she remarried. It was at this time that she entered the London and American literary scene.

She sat on book judging panels, gave talks on writing and toured America giving lecture tours. She went to the famous Foyles Lunches and made broadcasts. She was on Desert Island Discs, choosing a four-poster bed as her luxury as she could use it as a sunshade or a raft.

In 1994 she went back to India with her daughter and the BBC to make the Bookmark programme of her life in the subcontinent.

Rumer was a strict disciplinarian over her writing. She worked every morning and most evenings and always in longhand with a fountain pen. She said that as an artist has to dip his brush into the paint so a writer should dip his pen into the ink and this gives time for thought.

She thought many modern books were too wordy as authors just ran away with words on their computers.

She was awarded the OBE in 1994 and won the Whitbread prize for children’s literature, many other awards and her books have been published in over forty countries.

Rumer Godden had many interests but her greatest were for dancing and for Pekinese dogs, which she kept for most of her life, and for children – she ran junior poetry workshops which kept her in touch with the young and entertained her young great-grandchildren to doll’s tea parties where she made miniature food and everyone dressed up.

She also loved opera and good whisky! Rumer studied the great religions of the world and became a Catholic in 1957.

One of her favourite axioms came from an Indian proverb that says – “everyone is a house with four rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time but unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person”. She quotes this in her autobiography A House with Four Rooms.

Rumer Godden lived her later years in Rye, Sussex in Lamb House, once the home of Henry James. In her old age, she moved to Moniaive in Southern Scotland to be with her daughter where she spent the last twenty years of her life, writing and enjoying the river which ran under her study window.

Her last novel Cromartie vs. the God Shiva was published just before she died in 1998.

Rumer Godden has had many publishers in the UK and internationally. However, her main publishers in Britain were Michael Joseph and Macmillan, and in the USA, Viking.

FOR TEACHERS  . . .

Rumer Godden’s English and use of words are considered to be of the highest grammatical standard. Many of her books have been used as A Level text books e.g. The Greengage Summer.

Primary school teachers use her children’s books e.g. The Diddakoi for classes. The Dragon of Og has been a play for primaries and the poetry anthologies Around the Day and Around the Year have been used in schools for many years.

MY REVIEW:

I came across this book quite by accident as I was searching for craft books in our library system's online catalog. When I saw the author's name, I was excited because she is the author of my favorite children's Christmas book, 'The Story of Holly and Ivy.'

This delightful story is the story of a very lonely girl who feels like a complete misfit in her 'foster' family and in her school when she is sent to live in England from India by her father. The reason for his sending Nona Fell away is not disclosed; and the fact that he did send her away causes a great deal of heartache and pain for the eight-year-old.

An elderly great-aunt in the United States sends a Christmas box to England which is supposed to have three Japanese dolls inside. There are only two dolls packed in the box, so the eldest of Nona's cousins, fourteen-year-old Anne, is not given a doll. Seven-year-old Belinda and Nona each receive a doll.

Belinda is an unkind, manipulative child who begrudges Nona's appearance in her home and family. She does everything possible to make her cousin absolutely miserable. One of the things I personally enjoyed in this story was how Belinda finally learned a hard lesson about how to treat Nona and the rest of her family with respect and kindness.

Miss Happiness and Miss Flower each have their own personalities which I believe children will enjoy. There is a lot of discussion between these dolls of Japanese culture and customs.

What made this book show up in my search for 'crafts' is the fact that Nona and her eleven-year-old cousin Tom build a Japanese doll house from the ground up in order for Miss Happiness and Miss Flower to have a place to live.

Details of their challenges and problem-solving in building the doll house were intriguing to me, and I think they will capture the interest of young readers, too. A section in the back matter of the book entitled, 'NOTES', is informative about Japanese customs, traditions, festivals, and Haiku. Also included in this section are diagrams of the plans for the house that Nona and Tom built in the story. There are also stepped-out instructions so that people can make the same house if they wish. Astonishing!

This book has so much to offer readers—a touching story, social studies lessons about the culture of Japan, and plans for how to make a lovely Japanese doll house. Highly-recommended to classroom teachers, librarians, scout/youth group leaders, families, and anyone interested in building a Japanese doll house for or with children.

As mentioned earlier in this post, I borrowed this book from the local public library.

~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE COUNTERFEIT LOVE ~

~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE ~BLOG TOUR STOP --  'COUNTERFEIT LOVE'  -- AUTHOR CRYSTAL CAUDILL~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight + Linkto Excerpt Courtesy of the Publisher,Author Bio, Review & Giveaway~

About the book:  Can this undercover agent save the woman he loves—or is her heart as counterfeit as the money he’s been sent to track down?  After all that Grandfather has sacrificed to raise her, Theresa Plane owes it to him to save the family name--and that means clearing their debt with creditors before she marries Edward Greystone. But when one of the creditors’ threats leads her to stumble across a midnight meeting, she discovers that the money he owes isn’t all Grandfather was hiding. And the secrets he kept have now trapped Theresa in a life-threatening fight for her home--and the truth. After months of undercover work, Secret Service operative Broderick Cosgrove is finally about to uncover the identity of the leader of a notorious counterfeiting ring. That moment of triumph turns to horror, however, when he finds undeniable proof that his former fiancé is connected. Can he really believe the woman he loved is a willing participant? Protecting Theresa and proving her innocence may destroy his career--but that’s better than failing her twice in one lifetime. They must form a partnership, tentative though it is. But there’s no question they’re both still keeping secrets--and that lack of trust, along with the dangerous criminals out for their blood, threatens their hearts, their faith, and their very survival. Combining rich history, danger, suspense, and romance, Crystal Caudill’s debut novel launches this new historical series with a bang. Fans of Elizabeth Camden, Michelle Griep, and Joanna Davidson Politano will be thrilled to find another author to follow! To read an excerpt of Counterfeit Love click hereAbout the author:
Crystal Caudill is the author of "dangerously good historical romance," with her work garnering awards from Romance Writers of America and ACFW. She is a stay-at-home mom and caregiver, and when she isn’t writing, Caudill can be found playing board games with her family, drinking hot tea, or reading other great books at her home outside Cincinnati, Ohio.

If you like a feisty heroine, a multitude of villains, harrowing action-packed 'close calls', and chaos, 'Counterfeit Love' is a story you that will keep your attention.

Theresa Plane is a young woman with an independent spirit who longs for love in her life. Her parents are deceased, and her guardian is her strict, military-trained grandfather. She eagerly seeks her grandfather's approval and affection.

An ongoing problem for Theresa is the fact that she has difficulty discerning between the characters whom she should trust and whom she should not trust. Her wrong decisions lead to more heartache and trouble for Theresa and those who genuinely care about her well-being.

The author immediately immerses readers into 1883 Cincinnati through her strong descriptive writing. From everyday household chores to fashion to society galas and more, the scenes and settings included in the book are interesting and embellish the plot.

There is a complicated and mysterious plot involving counterfeiting that runs throughout the story. The many dramatic twists and turns and dead ends will delight mystery lovers.

While the romance element of the story is strong, I did not feel the faith thread was a prominent part of the story.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Audra Jennings Publicity. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are solely my own.

“You can’t mean it. Let this horse have his head? Sam sputtered a laugh. “I knew staying with Ruth would be a hard thing, but I’d no idea it’d take away your desire to keep on living, Emma.”

To his astonishment she laid her hand on his. “You’ve got it backwards, Sam. Staying with an unhappy person like your aent has given me more desire than ever to keep on living—to really live, and not spend my time mulling over the past. I want to enjoy whatever pleasant thing Gott puts in front of me at the moment.” When he looked up from their hands to her face, she smiled. “Right now what’s in front of me is a fast horse and the one fellow in the county who’s able to let him run and stop him when he’s a mind to. Let him go, Sam. Just to the end of the road. Let him run.”

The one fellow in the county.

Hang on tight, then.”
