ABOUT THE BOOK
Title:
Wildfire Threat
Series: Mountain Rescue Collection Author: Cathy McDavid Publisher: Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense Release Date: May 24, 2022 Genre: Romantic Suspense, Christian As flames race toward her ranch
She must rely on an old enemy…
An out-of-control blaze has single mom Rayna Karstetter scrambling to protect her little boy, grandparents and their cattle. Forest ranger Aden Whitley offers his help, but Rayna doesn’t want to accept. Her feelings for Aden haven’t gone away…and neither has the sting of his betrayal. But when the wildfire forces an evacuation order, can they work together in order to survive? EXCERPT:
Emerging from the trees, he called out, “Got yourself in a jam, I see.”
She spun, and in the span of a single heartbeat her expression changed from alarm to recognition to annoyance. “What are you doing here?”
“Bailing you out of trouble.”
Aden covered the remaining distance to the fence. Zip bounded over to him. Dropping to his belly, the dog soldier-crawled under the lowest rung of barbed wire. Once clear, he squirmed to his feet and danced in circles, yipping at Aden in a bid for attention.
Rayna braced her hands on her hips and glared. “I don’t need your help.”
Aden bent and scratched the dog’s head. He didn’t always get on well with people and preferred to keep his distance. Animals were different. Them, he tolerated. Even liked. Zip went mad with joy and fell onto his back, begging for a belly rub. Aden obliged. “He’s a terrible guard dog.”
“He’s a terrible judge of character. I’m going to have to work on that with him.”

its heart, Lies, Spies, and the Baker’s Surprise is a mystery. It’s also the story of building a family. Yet when someone recently asked me what surprised me most about writing the book, I answered that it was my research into Joaquin Murrieta, one of early California’s most notorious bandits. No spoilers here, but Murrieta has nothing to do with the baker’s surprise in the book. What amazed me was the difficulty in finding the truth about a man who was so well-known in his time. The reason, as we’re fond of saying these days, is that it’s complicated.
There are plenty of stories about Murrieta. They range from portraying him as a victim to a vicious killer. In one scenario, he was like thousands of other miners—only a peaceful man who came to California in search of gold. The story goes that he was driven off of his claim. (Or not.) In another version, he and his brother were arrested for stealing a mule. His brother was hung in front of him, and Murrieta vowed revenge on the men involved. (Could be, but maybe not.)
It’s almost impossible to determine which stories are true and which are false. There’s very little in the way of reliable news stories in the late nineteenth century. Who know? Was Murrieta an honest man who was driven by his tormentors to violence and revenge? Or was he just a man who enjoyed killing? The truth probably lies somewhere in between. And therein lies the problem. How was I going to portray this man with such a murky past?
As a writer, I need a clear picture of who I’m writing about. And so I chose the enigma itself. As the storyline develops, we get different perspectives on Joaquin Murrieta. In Lies, Spies, and the Baker’s Surprise, a stranger arrives in town claiming he’s a descendant of Murrieta. Nobody knows for sure, and you won’t find a spoiler here, but the legends surrounding Joaquin Murrieta provide a wealth of material for a writer who loves to inject history into a modern mystery.

Welcome back to friendly Bonita Creek, a small town in the Coastal Mountains of the Mendocino Coast of California . . .
Jorie Woodstone is the owner and operator of the wildly successful Cowgirl Bakery in Old Town Bonita Creek. She appears to have it all. She is musically gifted and belongs to a warm, loving, supportive family; but she's built a brick fortress around her heart after being traumatized by an acquaintance in an unforgettable event three years earlier.
Join this talented, spirited cowgirl as she journeys on through life's joys and sorrows with faith, strength, courage, and love on the road to true happiness.
'Jorie's Journey,' Book Two in the Bonita Creek Series, is a contemporary Christian Western romance story which is completely clean in language and content.
Includes an original recipe by the author!
EXCERPT:
"Hello, miss. I need to pick up a couple of pies to take over to my friend's house for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. The Cowgirl Bakery was highly recommended to me by my hostess at the bed and breakfast inn where I'm staying. Please don't let me down by telling me it's too late to order pies for the occasion." His mouth settled into a sweet pout.
"What flavors did you have in mind?" Jorie tried to sound thrilled to have his business at this late hour. In truth, she was exhausted from the multitude of Thanksgiving orders for pies and other baked goods she'd received from her ultra-supportive hometown. She dreamed of going home early tonight to soak her exhausted body in a luxurious bubble bath and watch a couple of episodes of her favorite Masterpiece Mystery series.
"What do you recommend? I mean, you're the one who works in a bakery and all."
"I think it's always nice to offer an assortment of pies. How about one organic apple cinnamon and one organic pumpkin nutmeg? Most people seem to like one or both of those flavors."
"I'm from New Orleans, so I was dreaming of a pecan pie . . ."
"No can do," Jorie clipped off. "We don't usually do pecan pie here in California. Well, I mean we don't do pecan pie without some advance notice. It's too late to order organic pecans for tomorrow."
"What a shame," the customer shook his head sadly. "Well, I guess I'll just have to accept the fact tomorrow will be my first Thanksgiving feast ever without a slice or two or three of pecan pie."
He looked as if he were already grieving the loss of pecan pie on his Thanksgiving menu. Jorie felt a twinge of regret for his loss, but the line of customers behind him was stacking up and she was short-handed today. Her most-experienced employee, Connie, had requested the day off so that she and her husband could travel to spend the holiday with their family in Idaho. Her other experienced employee, James, was home nursing a bad case of strep throat and was unable to serve the public.
She wanted nothing more than to hurry this man along. However, she accepted long ago the reality that a large part of being a successful small business owner was to project the image that said owner actually enjoyed working with the public. She always attempted to give the illusion of being the queen of customer service in Bonita Creek.
Being a lifelong introvert had made being in a customer service job a supreme challenge for the down-to-earth cowgirl. Since her business was successful beyond her loftiest dreams and goals, the thirty-one-year old with dark auburn hair and hazel eyes believed her attempts at being an extrovert were worth the benefits she reaped in customer loyalty and goodwill.
In an effort to put the customer first she offered, "I could probably throw together a walnut pie for you to pick up early tomorrow morning. I know for a fact that the market around the corner doesn't have any pecans either because I asked the owner about them earlier this week. A walnut pie is the best I can do at this late hour."
"You'd do that for me? I mean, make a special pie on Thanksgiving morning for a complete stranger?"
Jorie clenched her jaw and attempted to cover it with a half-baked smile. "Sounds like I would—I mean, will."
"Well, then, I accept your gracious offer. Give me one apple, one pumpkin, and one walnut. I'll be here at whatever time you tell me to be to pick them up tomorrow morning, miss."
"Aren't you concerned about the cost of the pies?" she probed.
"No. Like I said, your bakery came highly recommended from the owner over at the inn. Mrs. Redmond said ya'll's pies are simply the cat's pajamas, as my grandma would say. Besides, I really want to make a good impression at the feast I'm invited to tomorrow. I'll be celebrating with the family of my best college buddy, and I want to show his family I have exquisite taste and refined manners."
"Well, I can't do anything about your manners, but the pies will be scrumptious. And just so you know, the pies are twenty dollars each."
"Is that enough? I don't cook or bake at all, so I live at the mercy of talented folks like you. I'd be glad to pay extra because of the short notice and all."
"Twenty dollars apiece is at least twice as much as the diner out on the highway charges for its pies. Of course, I use only the freshest organic ingredients in my pies, and everything is made from scratch each day. No need for you to pay extra; I'm grateful for your business. Even though we've been really busy with pre-holiday orders, we don't usually get a lot of street traffic around these parts on a holiday weekend."

ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Her Mountain Refuge
Author: Laurel Blount
Publisher: Harlequin Love Inspired
Release Date: May 24, 2022
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Christian
Widowed, pregnant and under her controlling mother-in-law’s thumb, Charlotte Tremaine needs help—but she doesn’t expect it to come from her estranged childhood best friend. Yet after a fainting spell lands her in the hospital, Sheriff Logan Carter whisks her away to his foster mother’s mountain home to recover. But when her secrets follow, can she face her painful past with Logan at her side?
EXCERPT:
Logan laughed and looked relieved. “Ruby can get pretty heavy-handed with her matchmaking. I just didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable.”
She patted his arm. “You’re talking to a very pregnant lady. Uncomfortable is my middle name. Don’t worry. Ruby won’t bother me. I know you’ve never looked at me that way.” When Logan didn’t answer, Charlotte clarified, “Romantically, I mean.”
Logan started walking again. “Watch your step,” he cautioned. “The light’s going, and you don’t want to trip.”
It wasn’t much dimmer now than it had been a few minutes ago. Charlotte studied Logan’s face. “You haven’t ever, have you? Looked at me that way?” When he stayed silent, she frowned. “I mean, we’ve always just been really good friends. Right?”
Logan sighed and stopped again. Leaning one elbow on the top of a weathered fence post, he looked away from her, toward the red-and-golden clouds celebrating the sunset.
“Mostly,” he said finally. “Mostly I’ve thought of you as a friend.”

~ MMGM ARMED FORCES DAY TUSKEGEE AIRMEN BOOK ~
🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸
When I looked on my calendar recently, I noticed that Saturday, May 21st, was 'Armed Forces Day.' I realized I did not know the history of or the meaning of this holiday. I needed to do some research to satisfy my own curiosity--a common occurrence with me! 😄 Here's what I learned:
This holiday pays tribute to men and women who serve in all five branches in the United States military. The national holiday was created in 1949 to honor all branches of the military. It replaced Army Day, Navy Day, and Air Force Day. The goal was to bring a sense of unity to the US military branches — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
I'm sending my sincere gratitude to all of the men and women who currently serve our country and who have served in the past with courage, valor, and integrity.
🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 My MMGM post this week is an encore of a non-fiction book I included in my November, 2018, group of World War I and World War II books written for middle-graders. Here's another interesting story--I hope 😉--of how I was led to choose this particular title for my Armed Forces Day post: Last week I watched an episode of Antiques Roadshow on PBS which was set in Williamsburg, Virginia. One of the guests brought along his grandfather's World War II collection of photos and memorabilia regarding his time as a US Army pilot instructor at the US Flight School in Tuskegee, Alabama, and asked for an appraisal. This segment triggered memories of how much I enjoyed reading the following book almost four years ago. I hope you enjoy learning a little more about these the brave men who became known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Here's my original post:
~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY NON-FICTION FEATURE ~ -- WHO WERE THE
TUSKEGEE AIRMEN? -- AUTHOR: SHERRI L. SMITH
ILLUSTRATOR: JAKE MURRAY~Post Includes: Book Spotlight, Author Bio & Review~
LEARN MORE ON GOODREADSABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:
It's up, up, and away with the Tuskegee Airmen, a heroic group of African American military pilots who helped the United States win World War II.
During World War II, black Americans were fighting for their country and for freedom in Europe, yet they had to endure a totally segregated military in the United States, where they weren't considered smart enough to become military pilots.
After acquiring government funding for aviation training, civil rights activists were able to kickstart the first African American military flight program in the US at Tuskegee University in Alabama.
While this book details thrilling flight missions and the grueling training sessions the Tuskegee Airmen underwent, it also shines a light on the lives of these brave men who helped pave the way for the integration of the US armed forces.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Sherri L. Smith is the award-winning author of YA novels LUCY THE GIANT, SPARROW, HOT SOUR SALTY SWEET, FLYGIRL and ORLEANS. In October 2015, she made her middle grade debut with THE TOYMAKER’S APPRENTICE from G.P. Putnam and Sons for Penguin Random House.
Sherri has worked in film, animation, comic books and construction. Her books have been listed as Amelia Bloomer, American Library Association Best Books for Young People, and Junior Library Guild Selections. FLYGIRL was the 2009 California Book Awards Gold Medalist.
She loves her family, travel, chocolate chip cookies, reading, and a really good cup of tea.
MY THOUGHTS:
I have read several books in this 'WHO HQ' series before, so I chose this gem for my final November MMGM book featuring World War I and II fiction and non-fiction titles.
I had heard about the Tuskegee Airmen before, but I had no idea of the depth of the history behind this program until I read this book. This group of brave and skilled African American men were the first airplane pilots of color to ever serve in the United States military.
In May, 1939, two African American men, Chauncey Spencer and Dale White, flew from Chicago to Washington, D.C., to meet with then US Senator Harry S. Truman. The pilots asked Senator Truman to help them encourage other black people to become pilots. The senator agreed to help, and later that year the United States Congress approved six Civilian Pilot Training Programs {CPTP} for black people. This book is about the most famous of these programs--the one held at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.
Booker T. Washington had founded a black college, Tuskegee Institute, in 1881 in the town of Tuskegee, Alabama. A tremendous amount of work and construction was necessary before the CPTP could be launched. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited the site in March, 1941, and was vocal about the program needing more money for a better airfield and newer airplanes. Her intevention resulted in a charitable fund lending Tuskegee Institute $175,000 to build a bigger airfield.
The author does not mince words about the rampant segregation in the United States military at this time. As the result of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, the country needed more troops, so minorities and women were called on to help out. However, the military still did not want to integrate its forces. So the Army agreed on January 16, 1942, to form an all-black squadron in their Army air force.
This first class in the Tuskegee Institute began with thirteen cadets but only five of the cadets graduated in March, 1942. These were the first African Americans to become Army Air Force pilots. The book follows this unit through their training and heroic combat missions in Europe and the Mediterranean. A total of 352 Tuskegee Airmen served overseas during World War II. Sixty-eight of these brave soldiers died in combat or went missing in action.
Unfortunately, when these war heroes returned to the United States they found that the nation had not improved its treatment of black soldiers in the least. The bases were still segregated. In 1948, President Harry S. Truman passed a law which desegregated the US Army. Soldiers of all races trained and served together, but it would take years and years before all branches of the military were fully integrated.
A highlight of this book for me was an interesting spotlight presented on Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., 1912-2002. His father, Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., was the first African American general ever in the US Army. In June, 1936, Benjamin O. Davis, Jr., became the first black man ever to graduate from the West Point Military Academy. He later became the commander of the Tuskegee Airmen and was the first African American general in the US Air Force. Eventually, he became a four-star general which is the highest rank in the US Air Force.
The final pages of the book list the awards and honors earned by these brave Tuskegee Airmen. There is also a detailed Timeline and Bibliography to aid young readers in their study of this subject.
This book is highly-recommended for middle-grade readers studying Civil Rights, United States history, United States twentieth-century history, United States military history, African-American history, aeronautic history, and for adults who wish to learn more about these subjects, too.
I borrowed this book from the New Book non-fiction shelf in the Children's section of the local public library. 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸 🦅 🇺🇸

Her work has won a number of regional and national awards, including the Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Award. Winnie grew up in southeast Louisiana in an undeveloped area her friends thought of as the back of beyond. Eventually, she found her own Prince Charming, and together they built a storybook happily-ever-after, one that includes four now-grown children who are all happily pursuing adventures of their own. When not busy writing, she enjoys cooking, browsing estate sales, and solving puzzles. She is also a list maker, a lover of exotic teas, and holds an advanced degree in the art of procrastination.
