Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, returns in Dianne Freeman’s charming, lighthearted mystery series set in Victorian England, and finds her wedding day overshadowed by murder . . .

On the eve of her marriage to George Hazelton, Frances has a great deal more on her mind than flowers and seating arrangements. The Connors and the Bainbridges, two families of American robber barons, have taken up residence in London, and their bitter rivalry is spilling over into the highest social circles. At the request of her brother, Alonzo, who is quite taken with Miss Madeline Connor, Frances has invited the Connor family to her wedding. Meanwhile, Frances’s mother has invited Mr. Bainbridge, and Frances fears the wedding may end up being newspaper-worthy for all the wrong reasons.

On the day itself, Frances is relieved to note that Madeline’s father is not among the guests assembled at the church. The reason for his absence, however, turns out to be most unfortunate: Mr. Connor is found murdered in his home. More shocking still, Alonzo is caught at the scene, holding the murder weapon.

Powerful and ruthless, Connor appears to have amassed a wealth of enemies alongside his fortune. Frances and George agree to put their wedding trip on hold to try and clear Alonzo’s name. But there are secrets to sift through, not just in the Bainbridge and Connor families, but also in their own. And with a killer determined to evade discovery at any cost—even if it means taking another life—Frances’s first days as a newlywed will be perilous indeed . . .

Excerpt

We thanked Mr. Wilson and encouraged him to stop at the kitchen and partake of the feast once he’d packed up his belongings. George stayed behind to make arrangements to see the photographs when we returned from our wedding trip, while I said a tearful goodbye to Rose and left her in the custody of her doting grandmama. Then I slipped upstairs to ring for Bridget and change for our travels. I’d hate to be late and miss our train.

Fortunately, Bridget had kept better track of time than I and was waiting for me when I stepped through the bedchamber door, my traveling dress at the ready.

She raised her hands when she saw me. “Here you are, my lady.” She turned me around and began working on the buttons on the back of my gown.

“Did you find time to eat?” I asked her.

“Yes, ma’am. We’re feasting below stairs. I don’t recall his lordship ever running to such extravagance with a luncheon menu before.”

“Funny, I don’t recall a thing I ate. I suppose weddings are like that. There’s so much planning beforehand and the actual event passes by in the blink of an eye. Are you and Blakely ready to leave for the train?”

Bridget had finished with the buttons on the back and was now working on the sleeves. “As soon as we get you changed, I’ll hand this gown off to the housekeeper and I’m as good as ready. I’ve asked her to send it on to your aunt’s house, ma’am, as I’m sure Jenny will know how to clean it.”

Since Jenny had been my maid before she worked for Aunt Hetty, I was quite familiar with her skills and certain Bridget was right. “Well done, Bridget. What about the bags?”

“The baggage is already loaded on the carriage. Everything is ready and waiting for us.” She peeled the sleeves off my arms and I stepped out of the wedding gown.

“I’ll need to say goodbye to the guests. After that, I’ll be ready to leave, too. It’s been years since I’ve had a trip.”

“Don’t I know it.” Bridget laid the gown out on the bed and picked up my traveling dress. “Are you planning to throw your bouquet, ma’am?”

“I hadn’t thought of that. If there’s anyone left to throw it to. The whole time we were with the photographer, guests were traipsing back and forth between here and the Connors’ residence. I can’t imagine why.” I turned to see myself in the mirror as she began fastening the dress.

“That color is perfect for a trip to the south of France.”

She was right. It was a blue-green that brought to mind the sea and warm, sunny climes. And it fit to perfection. It was worth every penny I’d scraped together.

The new kid gloves matched beautifully. I sat down to button up the left hand while Bridget fastened my shoes, then buttoned up the right for me. She handed me my bag and bouquet.

“This is it,” I said, nearly bursting with excitement. “I’ll meet you on the train.”

Bridget smiled up at me. “Yes, you will, Mrs. Hazelton.”

George awaited me at the foot of the stairs. I wanted to skip down them, take him by the arm, and be on our way. The doorbell sounded over the hum of voices in the drawing room. George looked at me, shrugged, and opened the door, admitting Inspector Delaney.

“This is a surprise,” I said. “How lovely you’ve decided to come and celebrate with us after all. What a shame we’re on our way out.”

Delaney glanced around, taking note that we were the only ones in the entry hall. “My felicitations to you both, but I’m here in my official capacity.”

I moved slowly down the stairs, fighting a sense of dread. It was never a good sign when the police showed up at one’s wedding.

“Is something wrong, Inspector?”

He cleared his throat. “Do you have a relative by the name of Alonzo Price, ma’am?”

“Yes.” Fear kept me frozen in place. “He’s my brother. Has something happened to him?”

“I’m afraid he’s been arrested.”

“Arrested?” George echoed. “Whatever for?”

Delaney heaved a sigh. “For the murder of James Connor.”

My legs began to wobble and I reached for the bannister, dropping my bouquet. It bounced down the remaining steps, leaving sad remnants behind until it settled in a heap at George’s feet.

Review

Clever dialogue, witty retorts, and family drama make this story a winner . . .

This is the first book I have read by Author Dianne Freeman, and it won't be the last! I can't remember a time when I have laughed aloud throughout the first chapter of a mystery novel, but that is exactly what happened with 'The Bride's Guide to Marriage and Murder.'

Widow Frances Wynn, soon to become Mrs. George Hazelton, is the narrator of the story. Her insightful POV and quick wit made this book a fun read.

There are many tense moments throughout the story when certain characters or events appeared on page, but much of the story illustrated the daily life of upper class society in London in the year 1900. Society demanded that protocols be strictly followed. When they were not, there were consequences such as being 'shunned' by family or other members of society.

The description of the wedding, wedding luncheon, fashions, and customs of the period were realistic and drew me even further into the setting for the story.

Frances and George have a strong romance, and their easy banter held my attention whenever they were on the page together. Their ability to solve crimes together worked well because, unlike the majority of men at the time, George respected Frances's intelligence and her gift for solving puzzles. After a fair number of red herrings, misunderstandings, and attempts to sort through a jumbled timeline, George and Frances are able to identify the culprit.

The story is completely clean in language and content. I highly recommend this story to fans of historical cozy mysteries; clean, wholesome cozy mysteries; and cozy mysteries.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

Welcome to the Blog + Review Blitz for Her Cowboy Wedding Date by Cari Lynn Web, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

 🐎💒👰💕👢 🐎💒👰💕👢

ABOUT THE BOOK  Her Cowboy Wedding Date Title:   Her Cowboy Wedding Date  Series:   Three Springs Texas Author:   Cari Lynn Web Publisher:   Harlequin Heartwarming Release Date:   June 2022 Genre:   Sweet Contemporary Romance
Could this cowboy… Be her wedding date?
Maid of honor Tess Palmer has two weeks to plan her cousin’s wedding. She will do anything to make the ceremony perfect…even if it means wrangling best man Carter Sloan’s help. The cynical cowboy would rather focus on his business than wedded bliss, and widowed Tess isn’t looking for a second chance at love. But could planning a trip down the aisle bring the two of them together?
🐎💒👰💕👢 🐎💒👰💕👢  EXCERPT:Carter made her the dangerous kind of curious. The kind that tempted her to take chances. To risk more than she should.

He touched one finger to the brim of his hat. "’Night, Tess."

Her heart raced. She wanted to kiss him again. She wanted to push him away. "Careful, cowboy, or I’m going to think you’re running scared now."

"Not scared." His gaze softened. "Call it self-preservation."

"What does that mean?" she asked.

"It means you make me consider breaking promises." Carter spoke so casually and so clearly. As if that truth was as indisputable as the change of seasons every year. "And that, Tess Palmer, makes you a wildcard. And wildcards are game changers."

With that, he tipped his hat and walked away.

And Tess folded her hand. After all, she’d vowed never to let her heart go all in ever again.

A clean, wholesome romance filled with family loyalty, humor, personal growth, and love . . .

This is the first novel by this gifted author I have had the pleasure of reading—but it won't be the last!

Tess Palmer is a young widow who has returned to her hometown of Three Springs, Texas. She is working diligently to restore and reinvigorate her grandparents' historic general store along with building the foundation for her own small business making and selling her chocolate candies.

Carter Sloan is a confirmed bachelor living on his family's historic farm who is a successful business man who creates and sells whiskey. He has taken a vow to never fall in love or marry because he wants to be there for his four brothers and his grandfather. He has a deep desire to never let them down in any way, shape, or form.

I loved these characters and this story because it is a realistic tale of how opposites do attract. Tess does not want to return to the type of relationship she had with her first husband; Carter does not want a relationship at all—or so he says . . .

Tess is sweet, kind, and compassionate to a fault. She is creative and intuitive. She never says no when someone in her community asks for her assistance. She loves to keep family traditions and is fueled by the joy she brings into the lives of those around her. She exudes a vibrant zest for life.

Carter is intense, reserved, and logical. He is a spreadsheet guru who lives in a world of numbers and formulas by choice. Deeply hurt by his parents' abandonment when he was a child, he keeps his distance and does not allow his heart to become involved with anyone or anything other than his family and his business. He is kind and helpful; and just like Tess, he rarely turns down a family member or friend when they ask him for a favor.

This story took me on an emotional ride filled with fun, excitement, disappointment, sadness, frustration, and hope. There were times when I laughed out loud at the antics of various parties in the story, and times when I wanted to shake my finger at a certain stubborn cowboy. As with any well-written romance book, love prevails in more than one situation in this story.

The story is completely clean in language and content.

I highly recommend this book to fans of clean Western romance, clean and wholesome romance, and clean romance.

MY REVIEW:

A romantic suspense novel set in small-town Montana . . .

The Prologue of this book deftly draws a reader into the plot because of its unusual introduction to the villain and his method of luring young, innocent, Amish women into his tangled web of deceit and destruction.

The lead female character, police officer Leah Miller, lives with the grief and despair of her own traumatized past. Even though Leah's family was murdered ten years ago by possibly the same villain, she is allowed to continue working on the investigation by the town's new police chief, Dalton Cooper. She is stressed to the maximum and doesn't get any sleep for days on end.

The villain is creepy, resourceful, and evil to the core. He seems to outsmart several law enforcement agencies at every turn. When the villain commits more than one unthinkable crime in this quiet Montana town, Leah is forced to grapple with her own past.

Dalton is undeniably intrigued by Leah; and he soon initiates a romance with his subordinate. As Leah and Dalton investigate the new crimes and race to catch the culprit, the secrets they hold are revealed which essentially draws them closer together as a couple.

The supporting cast in this book is strong. Sugar, the police department's dispatcher, and Marge, Leah's adoptive mother, add some good judgment and emotion to the story. The other men on the town's police force are supportive and understanding of Leah's past.

I looked everywhere I could think of to discover if this book is going to be a standalone novel or book one in a series, but I was unable to confirm which is planned. At the end of the story, I was left with four major unanswered questions about events and characters in the story . . .

The book is completely clean in language and content. The faith thread is light.

MY REVIEW:  Note:  This post was originally published on Reading, Writing & Stitch-Metic in 2018.
In May I began searching for an appropriate middle-grade non-fiction book to use on today's post. As I was browsing the library's online catalog, I found this book in the children's collection. It caught my eye mostly because of the caricatures of our founding fathers on the cover. I recently read another book in this series entitled, 'Who Was Laura Ingalls Wilder?', a biography of one of my favorite childhood authors. I enjoyed the format of that book, so I decided to read this one about the Declaration of Independence. I was not disappointed.

The text is divided into twelve chapters beginning with 'What is the Declaration of Independence?' and ending with 'The Declaration Today'. Each chapter is jam-packed with information about the writers and signers of Declaration as well as the background for why they decided to take such a bold step against a powerful and militarily-superior Great Britain.

Throughout the text there are maps, illustrations, photographs, and sidebars including intriguing information set off in a text box to capture the reader's interest. For example, on page 12 there is a sidebar entitled, 'George Washington, British Soldier'. The history of the beginning of Washington's military career at age twenty-two is explained. He led 150 British soldiers against French troops near the Ohio River which turned out to be the start of the French and Indian War. This episode is certain to raise the interest of young readers--especially when they learn the Father of Our Country, George Washington, had to surrender in shame!

Taxes, the Boston Tea Party, the First Continental Congress, and the birth of the United States of America are all topics covered in this book. Anecdotal evidence is shared proving the courage and dedication displayed by the colonists in their battle for freedom from the British.

The back matter of the book includes a list of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the colony/state which he represented. There is also a concise 'Timeline of the Declaration of Independence' that would be helpful to young learners. The Bibliography at the close of the book has almost a dozen books which readers and teachers can delve into if they wish to learn even more about this historical, life-changing document.

Highly-recommended for fans of American history, the American Revolution, famous Americans, and famous documents in history. This would be a fun family read, also.

I borrowed this book from the children's section in the local public library.

ABOUT THE BOOK  Vanished Without a Trace

Title:   Vanished Without a Trace
Author:   Sarah Hamaker
Publisher:   Love Inspired Suspense
Release Date:   June 28, 2022
Genre:   Christian, Romantic Suspense

A missing person case. A new clue.
And a fight for survival.
After nine years searching for his missing sister, attorney Henderson Parker uncovers a clue that leads him to Twin Oaks, Virginia—and podcaster Elle Updike investigating the case. Partnering with the journalist is the last thing Henderson wants, until mysterious thugs make multiple attacks on both their lives. Now they’ll have to trust each other…before the suspected kidnappers make them disappear for good.
From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.   EXCERPT:  Henderson Parker stapled the last flyer onto a telephone pole on the outskirts of Twin Oaks. Helena’s lovely face stared back at him, the mischief in her brown eyes conjuring up memories of playing hide-and-seek on Martha’s Vineyard in the summer and building snow forts in the winter. Helena had been born three months after his adoption, the two of them growing up like twins. Her disappearance weighed heavily on his shoulders. If only he’d paid more attention to her, maybe he would have had a clue as to her whereabouts.

For nine years, he’d tracked down every lead, no matter how slim, in the hope it would lead to his sister, who he’d last seen in their hometown of Buffalo, New York, outside the courthouse. Even now, he could picture her sassy wave as she’d slipped into a friend’s van and been driven away. Because Helena often went weeks without contact with her family, it had been nearly six months before they’d realized she had vanished. By the time Henderson had begun asking questions as to where she’d gone, the trail had grown cold.

Trudging back to his vehicle, he climbed in and cranked the engine. Deciding to let the AC cool off the interior before driving back to the B and B, he pulled out the photo that had driven him to Virginia. Like most small-town papers, the Twin Oaks Gazette featured the life and events of its residents. In the July 20 edition, pictures of the town’s annual Christmas in July parade graced the front page and an inside spread. One of the crowd pictures had a woman with her face half turned from the camera—the resemblance to Helena was unmistakable. His first glimmer of hope in nine long years.

Genre:   Christian, Psychological Thriller with a romance thread

When a cold-case serial killer returns, FBI special agent Fiona Kelly has one last chance to stop him before he claims the prize he’s always wanted—her.
The sight of a goose feather at a murder scene modeled after a children’s poem is enough to make FBI special agent Fiona Kelly’s blood turn to ice. Almost two decades ago, a feather was left with her sister’s body—and with every subsequent victim of the Nursery Rhyme Killer. Now he’s back. Only this time, his latest gruesome murder is a message to the only one who ever got away: Fiona. Finding “Rhyme” is an obsession that’s fueled Fiona’s career—and destroyed her marriage to fellow FBI agent Asa Kodiak. Now Fiona and Asa have to put their past tensions aside and work together one last time. But Rhyme is watching, and catching this killer may force Fiona to reveal her biggest, darkest secret…the one only he knows.

EXCERPT:

Rhyme easily blended in with the rest of the onlooking crowd.

Asa Kodiak.

The name alone gave him a sour taste on his tongue, but things couldn’t have panned out any better. Kodiak’s new girlfriend was in charge of the crime scene. Not that it would have mattered who had been lead—Kodiak would have been called in once they saw Jenny’s body. Saw the feather.

Asa was right now seeing it. A million thoughts flying through his thick skull—one in particular.

Before the day was out, Kodiak would call for Fiona. Tell her he needed her back in Memphis to work the case, but she’d know that it was Rhyme who had actually beckoned her.

It was time to come home.

To him.

~ MMGM 2022 SUMMER READING RESOURCES ~

📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮
~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY SUMMER READING2022 FEATURE WITH LINK PACK ~ 📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮

📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮📕📗📘📙📖📚🕮  When I was watching the PBS Newshour in the spring of 2020, they mentioned a post on their website entitled, '18 Librarian-Approved Books for Kids of All Ages.'
Because of the continuing pandemic, summer reading programs still may not be operating the way they have for decades. In my county's library system, the librarians are still presenting their various story hours online.   We all know children need to be reading each day, so a summer reading program of some sort is essential.  Below is a link pack that some of you and your family and friends might find valuable and useful.
📘 -- The PBS Newshour Article with information and lists of books for various age groups may be found at:   https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/18-librarian-approved-books-for-kids-of-all-ages
📘  --  Imagination Soup has a fantastic '2020 Free Summer Reading Programs for Kids' up on their website. The post includes a list of businesses/companies offering free summer reading programs for children, lists of books recommended for students in categories of Pre-Reader up through High School, Book Recommendations by genre, and some fun-looking Scavenger Hunts. This post may be found at:    https://imaginationsoup.net/free-summer-reading-programs-kids/

📘  -- The ALSC, Association for Library Service to Children, has a page on their website set up for 'Summer Reading and Learning for Children'. I was amazed to learn here that summer reading programs were developed in the 1890s to encourage children to read during their summer vacations and to develop the habit of visiting their local libraries. This page includes links to the following areas of interest:
--  Why Summer Reading is Important
--  Tips/Resources for Parents
--  Recommended Reading Lists for Kids & Parents
--  Bibliography/Resources for Librarians    📘  --  Goodreads has some book lists which I think are worth mentioning here.  --  Middle Grade Novels of 2022 --  Best Children's Books About Summer  --  Great Children's Books With a Great Message  --  Middle-Grade Fairy Tales  --  Diversity for Children Books  --  Diverse Books for Children
📗 -- When I originally saw the link to 'Open Culture' in an author's group on Facebook, I thought it was an archive of free, digitized historical children's books. When I went to the site, I was pleasantly surprised -- astounded really -- at the breadth of free materials available here! As you scroll down the first page of this link, you will see a plethora of resources available for free. These include:
Free Language Lessons;Free E-books;Great Lectures;Great Recordings;Free Textbooks;Free K-12 Resources;Free Art & Images;Free Music; andWriting Tips . . .The list goes on and on. If I ever have any spare time after all of my writing, sewing designing, sewing, reading, blogging, family time, and home responsibilities, I keep promising myself I will spend more time on this site. Check it out at:  OPEN CULTURE WEBSITE

📗  --  The Library of Congress has a treasure trove of materials posted on their site, too! I'm providing a link to the 'Classic Books' page for children, but there is much exploring to do on this website, too. Free classic books have been digitized and are available for reading. I perused the titles on this page and found several that I loved as a girl or used in my classroom as a teacher:  'Anne of Green Gables,' 'Peter Rabbit,' 'The Ugly Duckling,' 'The Secret Garden,' and 'A Christmas Carol' to name just a few. There are other links here to more resources. Find it all at:
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS -- CLASSIC BOOKS

📗 --  One of our other MMGM bloggers, Ms. Yingling, shared this next link with me . The Project Gutenberg Library is a library filled with over 60,000 free e-books! It is posted on the main page that these books are not protected by copyright in the United States, usually because their copyrights have expired. There are instructions on how to search for e-books. Can't wait to spend some time on this site in the future! Thank you for the tip, Ms. Yingling!  Here's the link to the main page:

THE PROJECT GUTENBERG LIBRARY

📗 --  The Internet Archive Open Library is an archive of books for every age group that a patron can 'borrow' for free. The link below is for a search I did for the K-12 Student Library. There you can browse through books by reading level or grade level and access student guides designed for student use. This site struck me as a great resource for educators and parents/grandparents/caregivers who are working with their students at home while the schools are closed or even during summer break. Find these valuable resources at:

INTERNET ARCHIVE OPEN LIBRARY

📗 --  The Oxford Owl Project sponsored by Oxford University has a free e-book collection targeting children ages 3 years to 11 years.  There are resources available to parents, also, to assist them in supporting their child's reading. There is a lot to enjoy about this colorful website, which I feel children will find engaging and appealing. The Oxford Owl Project page may be found at:
