MY REVIEW: I originally borrowed this book from our local public library to read because of my strong and longtime interest in birds and bird watching. After I began reading the book, I realized what a perfect selection this is for families, classroom teachers, church groups, youth groups, and scouting groups to use as a launching point for some hands-on projects to work on together. The first two chapters in this book provide a strong foundation for understanding why bird houses are so important. A discussion about climate change and how it impacts birds is followed by some ideas on how to garden to benefit birds. In Chapter 2, I learned a lot about why migratory birds benefit from bird houses, too. There are several ideas given for how to protect birds from predators such as cats, snakes, and raccoons.
Chapter 3 provides information and building plans for more than a dozen bird species that are found around the United States such as wrens, bluebirds, owls, swallows, flickers, chickadees, ducks, warblers, etc. This chapter provides in-depth information about each species such as their range, field marks, voice, feeding, nesting, etc. Diagrams and stepped-out photographs are provided for an appropriate nesting box for each species.
Chapter 4 presents information about birds outside of boxes such as doves, robins, finches, phoebes, owls (burrowing), loons, herons, ospreys, etc. Plans for nesting shelves or platforms for these species are provided along with the same type of information mentioned in the previous paragraph about the habits, etc., of these birds.
The final chapter of the book gives ideas on how to help birds in need. Symptoms of injury and illness are given along with simple ways people can help.
You probably won't be surprised to learn that the photographs in this book are excellent! Highly-recommended for families, classroom teachers, church groups, youth groups, and scouting groups. 🐦🪶 🦅🦉🦆 🐦🪶 🦅🦉🦆

She peeked at him through the half-empty glass as she continued to drink. The view distorted his profile. Maybe he was truly ill. Or tired. Or both.
With the last of the water drunk, she lifted the handle to refill it. “I’m sorry, what did you say?” If he wished for her to carry him, she’d find Roy. She could shoulder some of his weight if Mr. Lamson spread his arms on them both.
She set the full glass in front of Mr. Lamson. The only noise in the room was the chatter drifting from the porch. He stared at the table. His face was quite pale, indeed. Even more so than when he had read the want ad his parents had placed. Yes, she had to find Roy. After they got Mr. Lamson into bed, she’d fetch a rag for his head, and then start on some broth. Make some tea, and maybe find some crackers.
“Della...” His voice halted her in front of the back door. When she turned to face him, she saw his eyes were packed with an emotion she couldn’t read.

MY REVIEW:
I didn't know this book existed until I came face-to-face with it as it sat on a book stand in the children's section of a small branch library in our county. As a child I read--and reread--all of the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A few years ago, I reread them all while performing research for a project I have not yet published.
The book is set between the winter of 1875 and the winter of 1877, which means Laura was eight-years-old when this story begins. Laura Ingalls Wilder did not write about this period in her life when she wrote the other Little House books. This period falls between book 4, 'On the Banks of Plum Creek,' and book 5, 'By the Shores of Silver Lake.'
The author, Cynthia Rylant, shares in the Foreword of this book that Mrs. Wilder ". . . penned only a dozen pages about this part of her life, and those pages were never published." Cynthia Rylant used the few written notes Mrs. Wilder left to write this book when she was requested by the publisher to write about this period in Laura's childhood.
The book was an enjoyable read, and I got some answers to questions I had about the differences in characters in the Little House television show versus the books. At one point a statement is made in this book about Laura's personality that didn't mesh with my interpretation of her character traits in the nine books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This got me to thinking about how readers may interpret characters differently than perhaps the author intended them to be. As an author, these thoughts sent me down a very deep rabbit's warren . . . I know, I sometimes wonder if I think too much!
This story includes many sad events and misfortunes, some catastrophes caused by nature, and other misfortunes caused by poor decision-making. I feel readers who immerse themselves in this story will experience some tender emotions along with some fun while reading about the Wilder's family lifestyle, travels, and strength when faced with adversity.

The emotionally-charged beginning of this novel knocked me flat because it was not at all what I expected! My attention was captured on page one, and isn't that the perfect way to kick-off a suspense novel?
Young Becca is way out of her league in her emotional entanglement with Robert. She's inexperienced, naive, and supremely angry. Add in a jealous woman and a lot of villains who are after her and you get a tale filled with a multitude of red herrings, twists, turns, and dead ends. When US Marshals Madison James and Jonas Quinn enter the picture, things get a whole lot more complicated. As these two experienced law enforcement officers and their colleagues try to solve the crimes and find the missing persons they are looking for, readers are treated to a tension-filled, action-packed plot that does not let up until the final page. The romance between the lead couple in this story is unique and sweet. The faith thread is deftly woven into the fabric of the plot by the author at every turn. This book is completely clean in language and content. Highly-recommended!
