#FridayReads – He’s So Into You – Roxy Wilson

Blurb:

Being badly injured in a plane crash and feeling responsible for losing his fianceé keep Jordan Cooper from getting involved with another woman, but his best friend Caleb talks him into going on a blind date. He’s surprised that in a short time his feelings for Raina Abbott runs deep. Jordan wants more than just one night with her, but he has to convince her first.

Leaving an abusive ex and ending an unhealthy relationship with food still aren’t enough to help Raina Abbott overcome her feelings of insecurity, but her best friend Jayce convinces her that going on a blind date is the first step to boosting her self-confidence and feeling good about herself again. Jordan Cooper shows her that she’s beautiful, both inside and out, but can a date and one night of passion assure her that he’s really into her?

Excerpt:

“May I ask you a question, Raina?

“Sure.”

“I just wondered why you’re here with me.”

“Because you invited me to your room, remember?”

It was obvious she evaded his question. It was the first time Jordan noticed Raina wasn’t altogether comfortable. So why in the world is she here?

“You know what I mean. Why are you on this date?

“Why shouldn’t I?”

“You’re beautiful, charming and intelligent. I would think you’d have men lining up just to be with you.”

Raina laughed without humor. “The trouble is, the guys I know either don’t want to be romantically involved with a full figured woman or just pretend they do.”

“You’re telling me you’ve never been seriously involved with anyone? Never been in love?”

“What’s love anyway?” she asked mockingly, and then shrugged her shoulders. “Maybe it’s just the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.”

“You think quoting Robert Frost is a satisfactory answer?” Jordan shook his head. “Be honest with me.”

Raina stopped swaying to the music and looked at him seriously. “Okay, you want to hear the truth? The truth is, I met a man who threw kindness my way, flowers, late night phone calls, the works. Within three months I moved in with him, much to the angst of my family. It didn’t dawn on me that he never took me anywhere, never invited his family or friends to our apartment, until I had invested so much time and effort in the relationship, I felt I shouldn’t leave him. He treated me like crap, insulted me, nothing I said or did met his approval. I became a chicken-shit, afraid of him, afraid of my freaking shadow, for god’s sake. I felt like such an idiot, because I didn’t even realize what I had become. Everyone noticed but me.”

#FridayReads – New Release – Burned by Passion – Dez Burke

Blurb:

Even good girls make mistakes.

Kira Taylor was shocked to meet her boss’s handsome, long-absent son and find him even more lethal in the flesh. He’d always been just a face in a photo – and nothing had prepared her for the way they clashed and burned when they finally met.

Blake Carter returned to America for a reunion with a father he hadn’t seen since he was ten. But Blake had never bargained for falling for his father’s sexy secretary, the beautiful and impressionable Kira Taylor…

Blake caught one glimpse of the gorgeous beauty from across the crowded room and felt the primal taste of desire like he’d never known. The sparks were more antagonism than attraction on her part as they collided over differences about the way he treated his father. But Blake had very strong persuasive skills when it came to bringing the vulnerable Kira to bend to his carnal passions…

Excerpt:

His eyes narrowed, smile disappearing once again. “You’re going to come out of the tub right now; unless you want me to help you out myself?”

Glaring at him hatefully, Kira muttered feelingly, “Damn you, Blake.” But he merely smiled. She knew he realized she had no choice but to give in. And the water was starting to cool uncomfortably.

He straightened, holding up the towel patiently.

Taking a deep breath, Kira rose from the water, resisting the urge to place her arms across her nudity. Even though she knew he was looking at her unabashedly. He wrapped the towel securely around her streaming body and waited until she’d stepped out onto the bathmat before surprising her by swinging her easily off her feet and into his arms, carrying her back into the bedroom.

“Really, Blake?” she muttered, instinctively wrapping her arms around his neck and fighting the pounding in her chest at how easily he’d lifted her, as if she weighed little more than a bag of feathers.

In the bedroom, he placed her gently down to stand on the thick rug and Kira instantly curled her toes into the thickness underfoot. The room was deliciously warm by now, a beautiful June night in London. What wasn’t great though was Blake doing the unexpected and whipping the towel off her slightly damp body. Kira gasped.

She felt too paralyzed with shock to move. What on earth…?

“Why would you wish to deny me the pleasure of seeing your gorgeous body, Kira?” he asked softly, head cocked to one side. He held her gaze with almost hypnotic intensity. “You’re unbelievably beautiful and now you’re mine.”

Kira didn’t know what to say. She felt outraged, and…well, a bit gooey in places as she let his words wash over her. She’d sworn to herself he’d never again get a glimpse of her without her clothes on but she couldn’t have foreseen this scenario.

What is an "Echo?" Tips To Axe These Repeat Offenders

Reblogged from Writers In The Storm Blog:

Click to visit the original post

By Sharla Rae

One of the things we've discussed in our critique meetings is the tendency all writers have to repeat certain words and phrases. “Echoes” is a term I’ve heard applied to frequently repeated words.

Read your chapter out loud, and that’s exactly what they sound like.

Common Causes of Echoes:

Using lame and boring “to be” verbs. When used, they often produce not only echoes but also wordy constructions.

This was a very informative article.

Book Spotlight – For Love and Vengeance (Kingdom) Book 2 – Theresa L. Henry

Blurb:

The world just became a dangerous place for the men who thought to rip Aviva and Jason apart. She has been kidnapped, and Jason intends to do whatever it takes to get her back, losing his angel is not an option.

Taken and humiliated at the hands of unknown assailants, Aviva’s only thoughts are survival and a way to triumph over her ordeal.

Jason and his brothers are on a race against time to take back what is theirs. Their investigation takes them across the Atlantic to London, where the brothers are prepared to use every tool in their arsenal to see matters through to its inevitable conclusion.

The fight was brought to Jason, and he intends to finish it in ways his enemies never imagined…Kingdom style.

Excerpt:

Dinner was turning out to be a lively affair despite the tension that poured off MacKenzie and Jake. They simply ignored each other. All three of the other men had, at some point, risen an eyebrow at her as though she should tell them what was going on. Her shrug had been the only answer she had to offer.

As amusing as she found the situation between Jake and MacKenzie, there was an undertone of something else floating around the room. Every now and then, she was sure she caught a conspiratorial look passing between the men. They were up to something. She knew better than to ask outright, so she joined in their dinner time banter and waited.

“Jason, I was thinking, seeing as how the lovely MacKenzie is here with the equally delectable, Aviva, I think it’s past time for a bit of brotherly bonding.” Josh smiled at his brother.

“What a good idea!” Jake piped in, way too enthusiastically for someone who had been so surly only moments before.

“Oh, I am glad you think so, Jake,” Josh said, his speech stilted.

“Yes, I do think it is a very good idea. What do you think, Jason?” Jake replied, keeping up the unnatural sounding conversation.

Jason bowed his head in shame. They had to be shitting him. Couldn’t they hear themselves? They sounded as though they were reciting lines from a Z-rated movie.

Aviva had similar thoughts but at the same time, she was also very interested in how Jason would respond.

“Ah…umm, yes, Jacob and Joshua, that indeed sounds like a very good idea. Umm…something I would be very interested in doing with you both.” Jason closed his eyes as the words left his mouth. He knew he sounded lame. His words hadn’t sounded so wooden in his head.

Aviva and MacKenzie grabbed onto each other’s hand under the table and squeezed – hard. That was the only way they could withhold laughter.

Ducking her head, Aviva whispered to MacKenzie. “Don’t put your sons on the stage, Mr. Kingdom, they suck!”

Jackson was embarrassed for them all, unable to understand how such bright men could make such a complete hash of something so simple. It was time for him to intervene before the women succumbed to hysterical laughter.

“My dear, Aviva, what my inept sons are trying to say is that they have decided to go out together for the evening. We all thought this would be the perfect opportunity as MacKenzie would be here to keep your company. You don’t mind, do you, my dear?”

Oh my God, Aviva thought, he’s in on it too. “Of course, it’s okay. MacKenzie and I have loads of catching up to do.” Aviva gave her friend’s hand a squeeze and MacKenzie went into action.

Book Spotlight – Send Him an Angel (Angels of Deadwood Gulch 1) – Tabitha Shay

Blurb:

In the Badlands of the Dakota Territory, a war rages between good and evil, between angels and Satan’s three sons…

Earth Angel—Elizabeth Bonner’s plans for her wedding dissolve when she discovers her fiancé cheating. To escape the pain and humiliation, she flees to the rowdy mining town of Deadwood Gulch where one person stands between her and hell—Gabriel King.

Dark Angel—Gabriel is feared by most, but he meets his match with Elizabeth. 1876, Dakota Territory is no place for a lady whose innocence is tempting as sin. Toss in a couple of trouble-making cherubs, and the Old West will never be the same.

Elizabeth and Gabriel—more than one war is brewing in the Black Hills…

Excerpt:

Inside her gloves, her fingers itched and felt moist. She stilled when she saw him track her nervous habit of rubbing her hands down the sides of her gown.

He lifted his head and their gazes locked. His lips curved with a knowing smile. “Miss Bonner, we haven’t been properly introduced. I’m Gabriel King, Gabe if you like.”

She didn’t like. She refused to be on friendly terms with him.

“I hope my presence here doesn’t bother you.” His eyes said he couldn’t care less if he bothered her or not.

Her hackles raised another notch. “You don’t bother me at all,” she replied, refusing to tone down the tartness in her voice. She was ready for a fight and this man was the one she was ready to battle. “I know who you are, and I know what you want.”

Fire shimmered in his eyes. The color changed swiftly from pale blue to fierce cobalt. Elizabeth blinked twice to be certain it wasn’t her imagination. He slid his hot gaze over her, pausing on her mouth, then casually drifted to her breasts to linger for an uncomfortable amount of time.

He lifted a most arrogant brow, then eyed the toes of her emerald-green silk slippers that flirted from beneath the hem of her long skirt. A smile teased his lips, as if he thought her shoes a bit whimsical. Taking his time, he slid his gaze back up, a long, slow journey that had her literally squirming inside. There wasn’t an inch of her body his eyes didn’t touch or dwell on.

“No, I don’t think you do know what I want,” he said with a lazy drawl. “Not…yet.”

Author Interview and Book Spotlight- M. J. Kane – Jaded (The Butterfly Memoirs)

It’s such a pleasure to welcome M.j. Kane to my blog today. I first learned about her work when Jaded appeared as one of the books on RNIC’s list of book review requests a few months ago. I have to admit that before I selected Jaded, I went on to amazon.com to get a sneak peek of the first few pages, and I have to tell you this: M.j. had me at the first two lines of the prologue. Seriously! I absolutely loved this story. Click here to read my review of Jaded, and you may also find out if Zach, the hero, made my list of Top Ten Heroes for 2013.

But as usual, I digress…

Today you’ll find out lots of things about M.j. For instance, you’ll hear about a few of her beauty secrets, as well as something which most people don’t know and would be surprised to know about her. Of course, you’ll also get an opportunity to learn about Jaded. So let’s start the ball rolling.

I’m delighted to have you here. Tell us, who is M.j. Kane, and why did you decide to write?

Thank you for having me, Roxy! I am a stay-at-home mom with an over active imagination. I guess the ‘voices’ in my head never really left once I quit playing with dolls, lol. But seriously, I have always had scenes, or mini stories going through my head to keep me entertained. I’ve always been an avid book reader, and never thought about writing. One day, my husband challenged me to take a short story fan fic I’d written and give it some more life. One thing led to another and my first novel, A Heart Not Easily Broken was born.

What do you do to stay grounded?

Family does that all the time! Honestly, I see myself as a mom with a passion for writing. I often forget that there are so many readers who love my stories and that I have fans. I work from home and most days walk around the house with a headscarf on, wearing leggings and a big t-shirt!

Do you have any beauty secrets you wish to share with your fans?

Hmm….from the mom who only wears makeup when I have to…I’d say the best one I’ve got is how to clean your skin naturally without using store brought products. The best exfoliate is a spoonful of sugar with honey. Talk about cleaning your skin! It gets rid of all the dead skin cells and leaves your skin soft and smooth. Follow up with coco butter to moisturize and heal damaged skin and lighten up dark spots.

Who are your role models?

My writing role models are women who made a living and career from being home to take care of their families and turned writing into a career, authors such as Nora Roberts and Danielle Steel come to mind.

What are some things most people don’t know about you?

I would say the one thing that most don’t know about me is that I survived having a stroke and paralysis several years ago. It’s been a long road back to recovery, and I honestly feel that writing has become a way to help myself heal emotionally and mentally. Physically, I was better within a year, but I will never be the same. I like to think I have improved, or evolved into who I am meant to be, I just didn’t know who that was until I started writing.

Which authors inspire you the most?

I am inspired by every author I read. Every author has their own style of storytelling and a message that is shared in their books. Some do it blatantly, while others hide the message in the story. Authors such as Beverly Jenkins, Michael Crichton, J. R. Ward, J.R.R. Tolkien, and even George Lucas are great sources of inspiration.

Are there any books you’re currently reading?

My plate has become full over the last few weeks, so reading a book is hard to do! I’ve found myself sneaking a way for a few minutes at a time with the paperback version of my second novel, Jaded, to refresh the characters voices in my head as I work on the third novel in The Butterfly Memoirs series, Lonely Heart. After taking months off from writing to focus on marketing and promotions, finding the character voices again are a must. Not to mention I get lost in the story and have to remind myself that I was the one who wrote it!

What message(s) you wish to convey in your books?

There is always a message in my stories. Since my own medical experience, I’ve learned when I tell someone what happened they look at me and think I’m lying. It made me realize we often don’t know what’s really going on in the lives of those around us, even if they are our best friend. We often let first impressions be what steer our thinking instead of taking the time to get to know someone. My stories focus on universal themes such as women’s health, independence, and relationship worries that everyone faces. I don’t write my stories for one particular set of readers. The themes addressed affect male and female readers from every national and ethnic background.

What is your greatest learning experience as a writer?

My greatest learning experience? Keeping up with the correct and most current versions of your manuscript is key, especially when it’s time to send it to the publisher!!!

If, for one moment in time, you were able to switch places with a character from one of your books, who would it be? Why?

Oh, that’s a good question!!! I’d say Yasmine, from the second novel, Jaded. She’s a woman who is more than confident about her body, her looks, and what she wants out of life. She’s free to express herself sexually, and doesn’t care what other think about her….at least on the outside. Inside, she’s got a few issues to work on, but that’s where the love of her life comes in.

At the risk of showing favoritism, who has been your favorite hero/heroine to write?

Yasmine and Zachariah from Jaded! Don’t get me wrong, I love Ebony and Brian from A Heart Not Easily Broken; I learned a lot about writing and character development when writing them. But Yasmine and Zack’s story hits a little closer to home because a lot of my personal experiences were put into both characters. I held on to that story for two years before it was released, and to this day, I can still feel every emotion, every tear, and laugh at every crazy thing that happens. I have another set of characters who may compete, but that’s a few books down the road.

Finish this sentence: I want to be remembered as…

…a storyteller who brought truth and reality to the world of romance novels.

Tell us about your latest release.

My latest release is Jaded, the second novel in The Butterfly Memoirs. Though it is part of a series, it is also a standalone novel. In it the concept of friends-with-benefits relationships is touched upon, but with a twist. We know that eventually the couple will get together, but what happens after the Happily Ever After? Were they really meant to be together, or will the relationship fall apart when real life, heartache and deception become the new reality?

If this story was made into a movie, who would you cast as the hero and heroine?

Easy! I love to use actors as my templates when writing my characters. Zoe Seldana would be the perfect Yasmine because she exudes confidence and sexuality. Columbus Short makes the perfect Zachariah because he too has a confidence that is comes across on screen, but he’s not one to boast about it.

So you’ve finished this story. What can readers expect from you next? When?

The next book in the series, Lonely Heart, follows the third roommate introduced in A Heart Not Easily Broken, Kaitlyn Rodgers. Like her friends before her, Kaitlyn’s story is uniquely her own, and is introduced within the pages of Jaded. Lonely Heart will also be a standalone story, but as always, you’ll get a little background about the characters and what led them there by reading the previous stories, it’s up to you! The release date will be announced later on this year, so be sure to follow my blog to stay in the loop!

Now here’s an opportunity for us to get a glimpse of this fascinating story.

Blurb:

A devastating breakup leaves Yasmine Phillips in shambles. Unable to trust another man with her heart, she focuses on the one thing she can control—starting her own business.

When her computer crashes, taking months of hard work with it, she must rely on computer genius Zachariah Givens to save her. A complete opposite of men from her past, she doesn’t expect the passion that ensues. But just as she finds happiness, she learns the truth about the other women in Zachariah’s life.

Prologue

Dear Diary,

I’ve been called a slut, a ho, easy, and a few other words that I refuse to even write on paper.

Since middle school, people have taken one look at my light skin, grey eyes, and the shape of my body and assumed that’s who I was.

Assume.

The first three letters of the word described them. How dare they judge me? Nobody is perfect.

It has never mattered what I’ve done in my life. Being the daughter of a bi-racial marriage has always haunted me. With my fusion of graceful features I’d inherited from my white mother – the slender nose, cat-like eyes, vibrant smile, and the take-no-shit attitude of my black father, people didn’t know how to deal with me.

Guys in school wanted to date me as if I were a trophy. Girls hated the color of my eyes and the texture of my hair.

Things got worse as I got older. Why? Because I love my body, and I love sex.

But I never used either to earn money or favors from any man. I am a confident, educated woman who goes for what I want, regardless of what anyone around me has to say. If that means I want a good lay every now and then, I’m damn well entitled to it. But one thing I’d never be is a home wrecker.

My philosophy on love and relationships is simple: sex isn’t love, but it’s nice while you’re waiting.

Well, that’s what I used to think before the man that I fell in love with trampled all over my heart.

And raped my best friend.

Love will never happen for me. No man will ever understand me…the real me.

Not my parents, not my brother, not even my best friends.

My life, my experiences – both good and bad – are what define the real me.

Yasmine

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

M.J. Kane stumbled into writing. An avid reader, this stay at home mom never lost the overactive imagination of an only child. As an adult she made up stories, though never shared them, to keep herself entertained. It wasn’t until surviving a traumatic medical incident in 2006 that she found a reason to let the characters inhabiting her imagination free. Upon the suggestion of her husband, she commandeered his laptop and allowed the characters to take life. It was that, or look over her shoulder for men caring a purple strait jacket. And the rest, as they say, is history.

No longer a television addict, if M.J. isn’t reading a book by one of her favorite authors, she’s battling with her creative muse to balance writing and being a wife and mother. She resides in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia with her high school sweetheart, four wonderful children, and two pit bulls. MJ can often be found hanging out at the local library where she is director of a local writer’s group, or online connecting with readers and other authors. Other activities she enjoys include: creating custom floral arrangements, assisting her children in their creative pursuits of music and art, and supporting her husband’s music production business, 3D Sounds.

MJ’s debut novel, A Heart Not Easily Broken, Book one of the Butterfly Memoirs, became an instant Amazon Bestseller in Multicultural Romance and African-American Literature and Fiction within hours of publication. It has also spent time on the African-American Women’s Fiction and African-American Romance Bestsellers lists.

You can find MJ on social networking sites, sharing writing tips, talking about music, life, and family. She’s always excited to meet new people.

Book Spotlight – Trapped Into Marriage – Dez Burke

Blurb:

Nick Vitale, devilishly handsome, forbidding – and heir to a billion dollar fortune.

Keyonna Hayes, beautiful, success-driven and ripe for love and passion beneath her ambitious shell.

Blackmailed into marriage to the insufferably rich and gorgeous, Nick Vitale, Keyonna is determined to teach him a thing or two about love which he so despises. Only things never really go as expected…

Soon intrigue, heartbreak and betrayal ensue and Nick and Keyonna fight to regain a love that was always destined to be theirs.

Excerpt:

“Why impossible?” Nick asked with a thoughtful frown. “Am I that detestable?”

“That’s not the point,” Keyonna said through tight lips. “You and I…we aren’t even friends. And let’s face it, I know there’re tons of females out there who’d gladly fill up the vacant post.”

“But it’s not them I want, is it?” Nick rumbled. He reached out and wrapped his hand snugly around her wrist and tugged her hard against him. Keyonna swallowed with difficulty and strained away as much as his steel hold would allow. As her heart rate increased alarmingly at his closeness, Keyonna wondered if she’d ever be immune to his overwhelming magnetism. She only had to look at him and she desired him – felt weak to resist his physical as well as psychological dominance. But even as he brought out the submissive nature hidden beneath her tough shell, resist him she would…

He cupped her face in his hands, and Keyonna’s lashes fluttered low as he slowly bent down and slanted his lips across hers. Limp with pleasure, Keyonna could only gasp as Nick’s tongue suddenly plunged deep into her parted mouth.

So much for resisting him. He ran his hands down from her throat and slipped them over the curve of her spine to grab handfuls of her jean-clad bottom. Keyonna shivered over and over.

She longed for his kiss and touch; that she couldn’t deny. Hell, she was only human. And Nick effortlessly left her feeling aroused, confused and longing for more. She could hear his breath grow raspy with lust as he deepened the kiss, urging her into a more wanton response. Moaning, she opened wide to his invasion, eager for the lashings of his tongue around hers. He let out a throaty growl of pleasure that vibrated against the stiff nipples she had pressed up against his hard torso.

Author Interview and New Release- Nikki Winter – A SEALs Heart

It’s indeed a pleasure to welcome today’s guest, Nikki Winter, on my blog. I’ve read at least a dozen books Nikki has written and as of right now, A SEALs Heart, is my favorite. Then again, I’m sure when she releases her next book, that one will be my new favorite. :)

But I digress…

Today we’ll learn quite a bit about Nikki. She’ll tell us what she wants her fans to gain from reading her books and which author has influenced her the most. Hmmm… And you may be surprised to know what her guilty pleasure is; or just maybe, you won’t. ;)

So let’s start the ball rolling.

I’m delighted to have you here. Let’s start by telling us, who is Nikki Winter, and why did you decide to write?

I’m an incorrigible nutter butter with an overactive imagination and too much time on my sinful hands. In essence Nikki is the side of my personality that I hide from everyone else until they give me caffeine…then, oh then, things get a little…crazy. And would it be wrong to tell you that I technically didn’t decide to write but that I was coerced into it with promises of world domination and Rundu men by my beloved mentor Jayha Leigh?

Do you write full-time?

No or I’d be crazier than I already am. When the muse beckons, I follow like a good little girl.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?

Um is my mother going to see this? Maybe…I’ll explain my way out of it later. My guilty pleasure is M/F/M stories.

Have ever written a character that was bits and pieces of you? Who was it?

Every character I write is an extension of myself. All of them take away a part of my charm.

Which of your books would you like to be made into a movie?

Do I have to pick just one? Okay, okay, if I had to pick, I’d choose Sweet Temptations. Just because it was my first and you never forget your first.

If you could date any character from any book you’ve written, who would it be? Why?

Um…I’m gonna have some really angry men jumping around in my head later for this, but I choose Luciano Antonelli from The Beauty and the Brawler.

What’s your favorite book or series you’ve written?

What’s with all the favorites? Do you want all my characters to abandon me out of anger? I’m kidding…sorta. My favorite to date would most definitely be The Beauty and the Brawler. I. Adore. Those. People.

What do you want your readers to gain from reading one of your books?

Laughter until something in them hurts from it.

Which author(s) would you consider your greatest influence? Why?

L. A. Banks will forever be an author that has my undying loyalty and admiration. The woman was incredibly, astoundingly innovative. Her ability to create worlds and characters that were unfathomably strong captured me from the moment I picked up the first story in the VHL series. May she rest in peace.

What advice would you give to new or aspiring authors?

Be open to constructive criticism. You’ll always be able to tell when someone sincerely has your best interest at heart.

What can readers expect from you for the rest of 2013?

Madness. Shifters. Crazy Alpha males and women that you just can’t help but to adore.
