EXCERPT:

Ever since she’d seen the news about the release of Wolf in her New Reviews magazine, she’d had a feeling in her gut this was where she needed to look. Jamie had credited a lot of her information to a book titled Legends of the Werewolf. Lia had read and reread the notes her great-grandmother had handed to her in those last sad moments. Notes that told about generations past that came here from Romania and grew the pack. This had to be the book. Legends of the Werewolf. Surely there couldn’t be two books with the exact same title.

How many times she’d been told that the legendary book had disappeared some generations back. That book—or the book, as they always emphasized it—was rumored to hold all the details of their pack history, all the genealogy charts of the genealogy and history of her pack. She was well aware it had been lost for years until hints of its reappearance popped up. It was all too much of a coincidence—the mention of this town, Calderwood, and the presence of

the author of Wolf in that place, were like beacons leading her on her search. Not to mention the reference to the book.

If this was the place, if the book was here, she might finally reconnect with scattered members of her pack. She wouldn’t feel so alone any more. Her entire existence she’d had the shifter way of life and the history of the pack drilled into her, along with the need to regain its place of importance again. She barely remembered her parents, gone since she was very young.

Her grandparents had raised her and never let her forget her beginnings or the key to her future.

“That garbage killed them,” her bunica—her grandmother—repeated time and time again when she asked what happened to her mother and father. “Your father was in line to be the new alpha. He was rebuilding the pack that had nearly been destroyed once before. They couldn’t let that happen.”

“Why not?” she’d asked.

“It’s all about power,” her bunica said. “He had it. They wanted it.” She spat on the ground. “To do evil. They are all evil.”

Lia was aware that hardly any members of their pack had survived, and now they were scattered everywhere. The older ones were gone, so it was left to her generation to do this. Her bunica had been intense and passionate in urging her on the journey. Find the history. Find the scattered pack.

“There are so few of us left, copilel miu.” My child. The woman had gripped her hand hard, and ordered her with practically her last breath. “You must listen to the message. Promise me. It is now your mission.”

“I will, I will,” she had promised.

“And, Lia?” She had gripped Lia’s arm with unexpected strength. “If you find someone, anyone, and they have the book, make sure they go all the way back to Rica. Remember that. They called him Rica the Strong. The ruler. Anyone else is enemy.”

“Yes, bunica. Rica.” “

“We must restore the pack. Find the book. The others, the evil ones, will be searching for it, too. It is their guide to destroying those who are left.”

Those who are left. The same message she’d heard over and over from early childhood. The words were like a constant echo in her head.

Find the others.

And then the final message she’d left Lia with.

On this journey, you will find your mate. The one you will bond with for life. The two of you can gather the newest generation together before we are destroyed by the worthless garbage. Don’t let them win. Mate and survive.

Mate.

How could she even think about that when she had so much else on her plate? Was her grandmother crazy?

In any event, she was certainly doing her best to fulfill part of her voyage. She’d taken a leave of absence from her job as a web designer, pulled out a chunk of her savings, and set out on her odyssey. That had led her here. What she needed now was to find out if the book Jamie used was the one she sought, and if the author still had it. Where she’d gotten it. If Lia could see it and read it. Maybe it was in the library, and Lia would have an easy time getting her hands on it. She had to find a way to ask Jamie Volka without raising any suspicions. That’s why lunch was so important. A casual meal, an easy discussion, and she could slip in her questions.

What if they asked her about shifters? What if she was actually going into the field of the enemy?

Don’t be so dramatic. This is the first lead you’ve had. Go with it.

The line finally inched forward again.

She saw Jamie glance sideways at someone, and her breath caught in her throat. Standing to the author’s left and slightly behind her, arms crossed and leaning casually against the wall, was the man someone had whispered was her husband, Mike. She remembered the name from the write-up on the author. Darkly handsome were words Lia would use to describe him. Ebony hair, thick black eyebrows and lashes, and—

Holy shit!

When he looked out to scan the remaining crowd, Lia could plainly see his eyes. They were a rich golden color. Wolf color. She’d bet every cent she had this man was a shifter. In fact, as inauspiciously as possible, she delicately sniffed the air again. Yes! There it was! She hadn’t imagined it. The faint aroma had to be coming from this man.

But what really stunned her was his resemblance to her father, at least to the pictures she’d seen of the man at his age. Was it possible he was part of her pack? A long-lost relative? Was she imagining it because she wanted it so badly?

Now it was even more important she talk to Jamie, but she might have to adjust her plan of action. Mike Volka might not take kindly to a stranger poking into family history. He might see her as an enemy, especially if she was right and he was a shifter. And there was always the chance that, resemblance aside, he was a part of the other pack. He’d know why she was looking for the book. He didn’t look vicious standing up there, a protective sentinel for his wife. But appearances could be deceiving, as the members of her pack had learned with devastating clarity.

She glanced at him again and was stunned to see him giving her a hard stare. He lifted his head slightly, as if scenting her. Or someone. He wouldn’t know who. She’d done her best to hide her wolf aroma with cologne, but that didn’t always work.

“Would you like me to sign that for you?”

The musical voice pierced her thoughts and shook Lia out of her reverie. She realized Jamie was looking up at her, a quizzical smile on her face. Hoping she wasn’t blushing in her embarrassment, she held out her book.

“Oh, yes. Yes, I would.”

“And who should I sign it to? Is it for yourself?”

“Yes, please. To Lia.” She spelled out her name.

“That’s a beautiful name,” Jamie commented as she scrawled on the title page.

Lia wet her bottom lip. Should she mention it was Romanian? No, she wanted a more private setting. A place where she could ask questions.

The Alpha’s Saving Grace – Romancing the Wolf

New release day 2! I think Melissa Schroeder is highly underrated as a paranormal author. She writes fabulous historical vampires, a hot as hell cursed Scottish clan, and delicious wolves as Kiera West (Yes, I know the serial isn’t complete, however as I understand it there are contract issues that cannot be resolved.)

Romancing the Wolf 3DTHE ALPHA’S SAVING GRACE, Lonestar Wolf Pack, Book 1

Melissa Schroeder

BLURB:

Alpha Jacob Sanderson doesn’t have time for distractions as he hunts a vicious killer attacking his pack. Sheriff Alexandra Littlefoot is his best resource and a woman he can’t seem to resist. As secrets rise to the surface, the killer’s violence escalates and threatens the pack.

EXCEPRT:

An emotion he had never felt before filtered through Jacob’s blood. He knew what it meant, and he as an Alpha, rejoiced in it. Since he’d brought her to his house, he had felt settled. Everything was right. She had slept in his bed with his shirt on her back. That was enough to satisfy him for the night. Still, he knew it wasn’t enough, and he had to move their relationship along fast or things could spiral out of control. He turned the bacon over and then grabbed the bowl of pancake mix.

Any wolf who had found his Mate would need to consummate. An Alpha was a different sort all together. As each day passed, his inner beast would beg to be released.

If he didn’t do something soon, violence would become too common. He had seen it once, with an Alpha who went too far over the edge that he never returned. Living as a wolf without ever returning to his human form was something Jacob didn’t want to do.

He heard her soft steps across the thick rug. Even if she had not been his Mate, he would have heard her, but there was an inner sense that told him she was drawing near. It sent his heart racing and his lust humming.

“That smells good,” she said from behind him.

He counted backwards from ten trying to get his need under control. “I thought you might need something hearty to eat this morning. You didn’t have dinner.”

Her stomach grumbled and her face turned pink. There was something so enchanting about the big tough chief blushing. It made her look more vulnerable. She was standing in his kitchen, wearing his shirt, and dammit, there was only so much he could control. Even a normal man would have issues with that. She must have sensed something because she took a step back.

“What?”

“Nothing,” he growled. He knew he was being an ass, but it was hard not to be. His cock was so damned hard he would probably have the impression of his zipper on it. He turned to cook, and the silence that followed was enough to prick his temper more.

“Do you know where my clothes are?”

He didn’t want to tell her, because he didn’t want her to remove that shirt. It made him happy that she had his scent on her. She looked perfect.

“In the dryer. I washed them last night.”

He bit out every word. His diplomacy was gone after only one night with her in his house. She looked around as if trying to find something else to say or do.

“This isn’t part of your parents’ house.”

“No.”

“You brought me to your house?”

He nodded.

“Does everyone know?” she asked, horror dripping from each word.

“Caleb and Dillon know.”

“If Dillon knows, everyone knows.”

He found some humor in that. “Usually, but he’s been warned.”

“Have I done something to offend you?”

“Offend me?”

“Yes, you’re practically growling at me. It’s not like you’ve ever been very nice to me, but still, you’re worse this morning.”

“I didn’t get much sleep last night.”

“Oh.”

The silence continued as he flipped the pancakes.

“Are you sure, because it feels like I did something wrong?”

“You’re standing there half dressed, and there is only so much a man can take.”

The words burst out of him before he could tell himself not to say them.

“Um…I guess I can get dressed.”

With a snarl, he turned around and grabbed her by the waist. She gasped, the soft sound so loud to him that he let loose another growl. He couldn’t take it anymore, couldn’t deny himself at least one taste. The scent of her hit him first. It was feminine, sweet, and unique to her. He bent his head and took her mouth in a hot, wet kiss. At first she didn’t respond, but a second later she did. As she opened her mouth, he stole inside, tasting the minty freshness of toothpaste and the desire she held from him. She slipped her hands up over his arms and to his shoulders as he backed her against the counter.

He slanted his mouth over hers again and again. Her muffled moan vibrated through his soul. He wanted her then, right there, in the most animalistic way possible, but he knew he was pushing it. He tore his mouth from hers and leaned his forehead against hers. Calling on what little control he had left, he stepped back from her. Her eyes were dilated, her mouth red and swollen.

“I think it would be best to stop that right now,” he said, need dripping from each of his words.

“What was that?”

“That was what I felt.”

She lifted her fingers to her mouth. “You felt like kissing me?”

“Yes.”

Then, he smelled the burning stench of their breakfast being ruined.

“Dammit. You are too much trouble for my peace of mind,” he said turning around to save what he could.

“Jake, I think we need to agree that will never happen again.”

He would normally agree with her. She actually worked for him. As Mayor, he was her direct supervisor. But, now that he knew she was his Mate, there was no way around it.

“I can’t.”

“What?”

He turned around and faced her. “Just accept that is going to happen again and often. Next time though, I’ll have time to really do it right.”

“And just what is wrong with what went on now?”

“You’re still dressed and standing. If I had time to do it right, you would have been naked and beneath me.”

Daphne Moore is ready for a change and a trip to Arizona for her cousin’s wedding seems like the perfect start. Part wolf shifter and part witch she’s had a hell of a time fitting in. All Daphne wants is a place where she’s accepted as both wolf and witch.

Diego wants his mate instantly and is ready to do whatever it takes to claim her. Daphne is a little more skeptical of the situation. Her wolf is telling her to go for it while her witchy side balks, knowing Diego will try to suppress her more enchanted side.

EXCERPT:

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes. Just family stuff.” She gave him a strained smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Are we going to go or sit here for a while longer?”

Diego snorted, she certainly didn’t have a problem speaking up. He threw the truck in gear and forced his attention to the road in front of him. His body pulsed with a longing he was still trying to wrap his brain around. It would be best to focus on her immediate needs. Protect. Nourish. Mate. Love. He shook the foreign thoughts from his head. “Is there something in particular you’d like to eat?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Daphne purse her lips and tap a pink tipped finger against them. “Nope,” she said, scrunching up her nose. “I’m open to suggestions. The last thing I ate was a bagel this morning in North Carolina around six.”

Diego’s only response was to grunt. He didn’t like that she hadn’t eaten, but it wasn’t his place to say anything. Yet. As he made his way onto the highway, he debated the direction he wanted to go. If he went the faster route, there was only one place to grab food along the way. If he drove through town, she would have multiple places to choose from, but it’d take them longer than he wanted, especially if there was traffic.

There was only one real choice. He’d take more time with Daphne over a faster route any day. “Is fast food okay? Burgers or tacos? Maybe a sandwich of some sort?”

“Chicken sandwich and sweet tea? That sounds like heaven to me.”

“I can arrange that.” It didn’t take him long to find a place to grab what she wanted. They zipped through the drive-thru and were back on the road in no time. “So, you’re Gideon’s cousin?”

Diego glanced at Daphne as she wrapped her pink lips around the straw in her drink and took a long sip. A shudder worked its way down his spine at the sight. All he could envision now was what she would look like on her knees with his cock thrusting between her supple lips, his fingers threaded through her thick brown hair controlling the depth of each plunge. An inadvertent groan escaped his throat.

“You okay over there?”

Diego made a noncommittal noise and turned his attention back to the road. He had a feeling it would take all of his concentration to get them home safely. There was something about this woman that called to him on a primal level. Something his wolf was trying to tell him, but the human part was too drunk on the intoxicating scent to hear.

Daphne laughed softly, the sound wrecking havoc on his senses. “Yes, I’m Gideon’s cousin. Our fathers are brothers.”

That drew his gaze again. There was no way they were related through their fathers. Daphne didn’t look anything like the Deckard side of the family. Tall, dark, and deadly. “Really? But your last name isn’t Deckard.”

“Well, you don’t have to be married to have a kid.”

“Oh.” Diego clamped his mouth shut. She was completely right.

“Shocking, isn’t it,” she snickered. “My parents had a one-night fling, and I was the result. Dad wasn’t around when I was born, so Mom gave me her last name.”

“They didn’t want to get married?”

Daphne let out a full-bodied laugh then. The sexy sound making his wolf howl. “No. They aren’t exactly…compatible.”

“They were compatible enough to have sex.”

“Aren’t most people?”

Diego chanced a look at her again. She’d twisted in the seat slightly so she faced him. Her long brown hair was wavy and lush. It cascaded over her shoulders, falling over the tops of her large breasts, which he had to say were magnificent. The creamy, plump globes were pushed up, and the tops exposed by the black, scooped neck shirt she wore. He let his gaze wander lower, taking in her flared hips and tight jeans. Jesus, he bet her ass was full, and the perfect fit for his large hands.

“Diego?” She asked, bending slightly to make eye contact.

He shook his head and turned back to the road. “Yeah, I think most people are.”

EXCERPT:

When his gaze met hers again, she frowned, looked him up and down, then rolled her eyes and went back to the clothes. He had the sinking feeling he didn’t measure up. The blatant disregard of her earlier smacked him on the head.

“Uh, sorry about that. You know, before.”

She waved her hand dismissively not bothering to look at him. “Whatever,” she drawled. Slamming the door to the dryer she spun, keeping the clothesbasket between them. He noticed her gaze travel to where Ryan stood with her friend. The couple was locked together from lips to waist. The woman’s slim, toned legs wrapped tightly around Ryan.

“Looks like they’re getting along great. How about we grab a drink at Chugs and get to know one another?”

She threw a baleful look his way. “How about we don’t.”

“What?” He couldn’t have heard her correctly. She did know they were mates, right?

“Why bother? From your reaction when we came in, you aren’t the least bit interested in me.”

Well, fuck. Guess that answered the fan with a crush question. She certainly wasn’t. What the hell did he do now? He hadn’t had this much trouble with a girl in—well, ever. Crossing his arms across his chest he couldn’t stop the frown from forming on his face. Maybe he needed to state the obvious. “Listen Red, I’m sure it hasn’t escaped your notice but just in case let me break it down for you. We’re mates.”

She had the audacity to snort. “I don’t give a shit,” she stated calmly.

“Well, I do. We’re mates, fated to be together from now through eternity. I intend for that to happen.”

Clutching the laundry basket tighter, her knuckles turned white and the basket started to bow. “Good for you,” she gritted out.

“No, good for you. You should be thrilled I’m your mate. Any other woman would be.”

Her jaw clenched, the muscle popping out a little. She turned her head slowly in his direction. Her nostrils flared as she breathed in shallow, measured breaths. When she finally looked at him, he could see the anger and hurt in her eyes. “I’m going rogue. Find some other mindless woman to cater to you cause it sure as hell won’t be me.”

His mouth dropped open in surprise. Before he could form a response she stormed towards the entrance
