The Hindi Film Heroine Makeover

The Bollywood Heroine is getting a makeover. Not the cosmetic kind though. But the type that entails meaty roles, getting a shot at playing the protagonist rather than the love interest of the macho hero and involves more than just singing songs and shaking their booty. Don’t get me wrong: a majority of Bollywood films still have heroines stuck in the same mould. However, a handful of new films are beginning to give the heroine a chance at doing something interesting, meaningful and geninunel...

WIP Blog Challenge — Sneak Peek into my Current Writing Project

Some clever soul once said, “If you wait for inspiration, you’re not a writer, but a waiter.” Frankly, at this moment, I’m a waiter of sorts. Waiting for my Muse to show up, who is taking a little break right now. Before she cracks the Whip and makes me return to my WIP (Pun totally unintended!) I take this opportunity to respond to my lovely author friend Devika Fernando who has tagged me for a “WIP Blog Challenge”.

Thanks, Devika, for including me in this interesting tour. Do check out Devi...

Dedh Ishqiya – When the Sequel trumps the Original

ishqiyaDedh Ishqiya (Love 1.5) is that rare breed of movie where the sequel is actually better than the original. Ishqiya which released to rave reviews in 2010 as an original, homegrown black comedy, produced with the blessings of auteur-producer Vishal Bharadwaj, marked the debut of Abhishek Chaubey. The film’s appeal lay in its indie feel versus the typical Bollywood masala, the rustic background of real India versus the glamorous sheen of urban India as portrayed in a standard Indian flick and i...

Getting to know your character

The most fun thing about being a writer is creating characters that are engaging and likeable. But a Ms. Goody Two Shoes will make your reader fall asleep. While the reader may admire Ms. Perfection for a bit, a story about someone who is too-perfect will be intensely boring. So make sure you throw in a flaw in your protagonist’s makeup to keep things interesting. Flaws trip up characters and create conflict. And, conflict is what makes readers keep turning the pages. Also, a character without any flaw means she doesn’t change or grow through the story. Read the full post here...

Writing About Casinos – A Trip into the Past, a Look into the Future

There are two types of successful writers: those who are compelled by an inner urge to tell stories and those who find inspiration from books, newspapers, movies and a myriad other sources and in the process discover a voice of their own.

Regardless of what kind of writer you may be, you will often find yourself facing a similar struggle: finding something to write about. Many authors will tell you that the easiest way to get started on a project is to draw from your own experiences, and while...

Crafting Character-Driven Plots

THANN -twitter (415x415) I have often been accused of writing stories that are plot-driven. And I plead guilty as charged!

Blame it on my training in screenwriting, a medium where action is more important than words. As a screenwriter you learn to steer clear of emotions that are not “actionable” or do not push the story forward. So much so that writing introspective points-of-view that require digging deep into character motivations makes me break in a cold sweat.

When I started writing my second book, Trouble has a...

Excerpts from Trouble Has A New Name

Rayna Dutt, an upcoming model, is dumped by her boyfriend. She is Impulsive, Feisty and attracts trouble at every moment. She is very much a girl next door but likes to live life her own way.She has her own set of self-designed laws which she fondly calls “Rayna’s Book of Immutable Laws” (RBIL).

According to the RBIL: Anything that could go wrong usually did!

What’s more interesting are the laws themselves and how they they keep proving true in her life… Here's how one of these laws play out in her life :)

RBIL #1 : Footwear gaffe equals a disastrous day ahead.

“The Mercedes soundlessly swept out of the drive way and raced down the road skirting the seafront on its way to the airport. Rayna looked out anxiously, praying they would not get stuck in a traffic jam. Thankfully,
being a Sunday morning, the streets were devoid of the usual week day bumper-to-bumper traffic. If all went well—fingers firmly crossed—they should cover the distance to the airport in twelve minutes, tops. She glanced at her wrist and realized she’d forgotten to strap on her watch.Shoot! Her eyes strayed to her feet and she froze in hor
ror.Holy crap! She was still wearing her flip-flops with the cute fluffy pink teddy bears on them”
