Final word on the One Show clip: it’s EXACTLY what we said would occur pre-airing s4. The Watson’s and Sherlock as a crime-solving unit on the day of Borough Market. It could almost have been filmed to provide the happy family narrative many people expect to see. It was the anticipated PR move leading up to TST.
What wasn’t anticipated was the other dark trailers and the I love you. At SDCC the panel told us the baby and any happiness for the Watson’s was brief and at the beginning of ep 1. I think it was repeated in print interviews too. Whatever those Rosie Watson scenes are, they don’t last long and neither does Rosie. If I were really going out on a limb I’d wonder if these scenes were filmed in the same vein as the Mycroft and Moriarty scenes at St Barts.
But one thing I don’t wonder about, is the set up for the rug pulls, the devotion to John and Sherlock’s relationship and the need to fix it, plus the evidence already in. No doubt at all on the endgame.
Thanks for that. I just want wifey Mary gone. I hope to fuck they don’t drag it out interminably (as they already have).
Even if you buy the "surgery" explanation, it doesn't redeem Mary
So let’s go through this.
Even if you buy the steaming pile of bullshit that is the surgery explanation (which I don’t, but I’ll meet you halfway here), it doesn’t make Mary a person who should be considered on the “side” of our protagonists.
Simply put, even if we believe that she didn’t mean to kill him there, she absolutely would’ve killed him later if he didn’t play along.
From the “Explanation”: “One precisely calculated shot to incapacitate me in the hope that it would buy you more time to negotiate my silence”
If we consider the surgery sparing his life, it was a conditional reprieve at best. It was conditional upon him playing along.
We see her find out he survived. Our reaction we get is shock, and once her face is hidden in the hug, the look of someone planning their next steps.
The next step is to lurk by a gravely injured man’s bedside and condescendingly threaten him not to out her.
Then, when he escapes the hospital, her next step is to go find him alone, threaten him again (how badly do you want to find out), and only seem to decide against killing him as an option when he points out she’d be caught.
She ultimately seems to play along. Because Sherlock, for some godforsaken reason (long game or a sense of fucked up obligation), decided to take her case and seemed to be playing nice. She lets him spin the story (never actually confirming it) and once they “decide to take her” she drops the threat (all while managing to never look remorseful for a damn thing)
Her behavior after the shot leads me to conclude that had Sherlock not played along, if the “negotiations to buy his silence” and had he not ensured that Mary could not kill him in the empty house without inconveniencing herself, there is nothing that would’ve stopped her from pulling that trigger.
***This isn’t even going into the fact that, even if true, the idea of mortally wounding someone to resolve the situation in the most convenient manner to you (she could’ve just knocked CAM out, but she needed to delay John too so she could escape) so your husband doesn’t find out about your criminal past is absolutely abhorrent.
So no. I don’t like her. I don’t forgive her. I don’t consider her part of the team. Even if this is the most emotionally unsatisfying writing in existence and I’m meant to think her actions were even close to justified, I’m going to recognize that the writers have made a stupid ass decision and be capable of independent thought. Because lying and manipulating the protagonists, putting one near death, showing no remorse, and allowing that same one to nearly go to his death because of your involvement is all while making zero contributions that help the protagonists is /not/ someone who is on their side. It’s someone who is using them.
Yup
WTF?
Two things.
1. Isn’t the point of teasers and clips to get people to watch the show? Do they really think ANYONE is compelled to watch the show based on happy Watson family and Unca Sherlock? Like, if I were a casual, I’d be, yeah, that looks like a hot mess now, count me out. Plus, if that’s NOT what the show is about, why do they keep pushing it? It’s like trying to market a Bond film with clips of him drinking tea with the queen. WTF? On a marketing level alone, I totally do not get this approach unless the happy trio is a lot more of the legit season than WE (johnlock fans) expect. And fuck the idea of a rug pull. They’d still need to somehow let the casuals know there will BE a rug pull and that this isn’t a domestic comedy.
2. Thus, I’m afraid to watch E1 now. Like seriously, I want you all to watch it first and tell me if it’s 90 minutes of bullshit, because I’m just not up for that much Mary and domesticated, forgiving John. I don’t want to see another episode until it’s the one where she goes away. I’m so over it. Ugh.
SAME
If I were a casual, my thoughts wuold be like: “Uhm, excuse me? I was here to watch a detective story, a good crime, what the fuck is this fam-com?”
Yes. I’m confused, actually, because the teasers and trailers have made me decide not to watch and you should hear what some people I know have said about them. I’ll just read what has happened and then decide if I’m going to watch later or not. So far I’m out because what we’ve been shown has very little connection to Sherlock Holmes, updated version or otherwise.
M, my Husband, says they’ve just gotten tired of the whole thing. They’ve run out of ideas and Martin and Ben have too many other things to do.
Interesting feedback. Yeah, my husband doesn’t like the look of it either. To be fair, the two official trailers haven’t been happy family, but these clips are such a turn off, and not just for johnlock fans. I can’t imagine anyone wants to see that reality except a few dozen warstans. I’m still can’t see how they can have her shoot Sherlock, be unrepentant, and then reincorporate her and expect any viewer to not be disgusted.
They couldn’t possibly, and they won’t. This clip was released in the U.K. on a show where Amanda was a guest. Not an official trailer so most people who would be turned off won’t see it. And tbh I think they’d tune in anyway even if they don’t want a domestic drama. In the UK anyway where it gets huge ratings. They’ve also seen the real trailers which make it seem VERY dark. It’s pretty obvious this clip isn’t the tone of the whole thing. And they can’t somehow warn casuals about a rug pull? Then it wouldn’t be a rug pull! It’ll be obvious fast though imo that it isn’t real.
I hope it will be “obvious fast”. We’re already had a full season of Mary plus TAB. I’m so over it. I don’t want them to dangle this plot thread for
Most of S4.

OMG, I am dying. They better get this and recognize your brilliance.
Can someone explain what “the supply of game” means?
Hi, do you really think this is gonna be the last season?
Dear Anon, let’s see if I make sense:
Given the British state of affairs, not to mention the whole state of the world, and the damn Tories trying to dismantle the BBC, I think they wrapped up the main plot points in series 4 and they will give us a series in which all the major narrative must-haves (so to speak) are resolved. But I guess you know that they have always hinted at “this is the last one” before, so I don’t think series 4 is the end. I think we’ll get one-offs or even a series 5… eventually. One last series or some Christmas specials where they have an established relationship and they solve cases and come back to 221B together at the end. Happy. My gut tells me this series is where they tie up every string. And you know what that means, don’t you? Both Ben and Martin have said that this series has an air of finality, of pause. So I guess there won’t be any cliffhanger - not a very dark one, not something emotionally devastating - because that wouldn’t give any feeling of pause: it would ask for resolution. Ben said that they are left in a place where it’s fine for them to be for quite a long time… Well, call me optimistic, but that doesn’t sound too bad for me.
