I kind of think that Sherlock is saying ‘I Love You’ to their captor. That doesn’t feel how he would say it to John, to me.
Moriarty making Sherlock say it to him?
If Moriarty is their captor, then I could see Sherlock saying it to him to try and convince him to let John and Mycroft go, yeah. Moriarty long had an obsession with Sherlock.
Though I won’t lie, this is sort of suddenly giving me ‘dark molly’ feels (a theory I wouldn’t even consider before now), because I could definitely see Sherlock saying that to her to try and convince her to let them go.
Also, there would be something somewhat satisfying about flipping the whole ‘obsessive gay bad guy’ trope on it’s head, and making the obsessive het character constantly crushing on the protagonist, and who everyone took for granted, really be the true baddie. From TAB it did seem that Molly has a lot more repressed anger against Sherlock, and resentment toward John than we previously realised. And holy crap would that be a rug pull for everyone.
Like imagine if obsessive het love destroys and kills, but gay love (between john and sherlock) conquers all, in the end!
I think he’s reporting an old conversation - so if an adversary asked him “What was the last thing you said to John Watson?” then Sherlock would say it with that tone.
@mljohnlockc, Also a really valid theory, because if we are going to get a love confession this season, I have a feeling it will be before the final hour of the last episode.
I agree with you on the “it is a forced statement” reading. It is a really creepy scene, if it is their captor (being it Moriarty or dark!Molly - what a thought!) forcing Sherlock to say it to them. So feel much better with @

’s suggestion that Sherlock’s asked to repeat something he said to John at a certain point.
This makes sense too.

I just hate the insinuation that the worst, darkest thing Sherlock could tell is that he loves someone. Even if that is not how this all plays out, still, to set it up to look like that in the trailer makes me angry.
why did they do it like that, seriously. they could’ve flipped it any way they wanted to and still covey their message. w h y
That’s what’s making me so upset. It was so pointless to make that seem like the worst thing for Sherlock Holmes? Flies in the face of every bit of struggle he has gone through on that trek to being a good man. Seriously. WTF??
But isn’t that a total fandom/romance trope? If you’re in love with your best friend, who is straight (supposedly) and married to someone else, then it is your deepest secret that you love your bff that way. Sherlock would want to keep his feelings a secret (if he assumes John does not reciprocate). So… hell. I don’t see anything negative about it other than he thinks his love is in vain (which is what he would assume at first). Seems like a straight-up confession to me. I can’t believe they showed it.
It’s possible it is Sherlock admitting it outloud in his MP but not to ‘real John’, not at first.
Christ on a cracker.

Martin Freeman | Nativity!
He makes such a cute...
Once again a gay double entendre!!
FYI; In gay slang, sex in certain positions that requires one guy to be holding on to the other in a hug-like position, so face to face sitting position or wall sex, can be referred to ‘winding the baby’ or ‘burping the baby’. It can also be used as a euphemism for masturbation.
Lestrade: I think he needs winding
John: You know, I think that really might be it
Sherlock: No, don’t get it
