S4 is fan service
Think about all of the breadcrumbs they left for us in series 1-3: 57, elephants, phone as heart, mirroring,
Those symbols had very important work to do in those series, because the symbolism was, at that point in the story, all they could use to hint at us, to signal us to get on board. But, now we’re finally here. The time for symbolism has passed. Subtext is dead. They don’t have to rely on it anymore, because we’re finally (finally) at the point where it’s just the plot.
But.
They know that we saw them. They know that we have been playing along, and so they kept writing it in. Even though there’s absolutely no need for it anymore.
They saw us freak out about 57 text messages, and so they wrote in 59 phone calls. They saw us respond to the elephant in the room, so both the writers and arwel speak to us using that language. (And I bet you anything it’s written in the show at some point too.) And the same goes for mirrors.
And god knows what other similar little treats they have in store for us. Absolutely none of that is necessary at this point. None of it. They love feeding us the bread crumbs just as much as we love getting them. So, yeah, they’re making the story that they’re making, but all the flourishes, those are purely for us.
Basically the moral of the story is that my blog is going to be one long love letter to Gatiss and Moffat for the forseeable future.

And not only that, they had to plant the seed now that Sherlock has an emotional life so that the audience can come to terms with that fact now, weeks ahead of time, BECAUSE THE BIG REVEAL ISNT THAT SHERLOCK FEELS LOVE, ITS WHAT HE DOES WITH THAT
Like, moffat and gatiss are just talking freely about the fact that Sherlock can and does have an emotional life, and if they’re talking about it, that’s not the fucking spoiler, it’s the groundwork

Hey, thanks for commenting on my meta. There's one thing that keeps bugging me: why do you think Mary's not pregnant/there's no sign of a baby in TAB?
I have no idea. It’s all Sherlock’s MP so wish fulfillment? He doesnt’ want to deal with the baby? Or he subconsciously deduces it isn’t real? I’ve always had a big problem with the “fake belly/no baby” theory. John’s a doctor, so I can’t see why Mary would ever think she’d get away with that. So it’s probably more like wish fulfillment or denial on Sherlock’s part.
