SNL with The Rock!!--And an amazing tip!!!

I usually don't write about things like this, but I'm so mad, I have to say something. I'm not a big fan of SNL, but since there was nothing on TV Saturday, I thought, why not. Now my question is Why?

Dwayne Johnson, The Rock, was host, and they had a skit of who could come up with the most evil invention. His was a robot that molests children. I never thought SNL or he could sink so low, but it seems they can and did. Could someone please tell me what's so funny about a robot that molests children? That's comedy? Something considered funny? I bet if you ask all the ones who were molested as children, none of them would think it's so funny. And neither would the children who are going through it now. And with all the child predators rampant in this world, do you really need a skit about a robotic one? Where is the compassion for those that have gone through this and are still bearing the scars?

I never cared for Dwayne Johnson to begin with, now he's just a disgusting human being. Shame on him and SNL. I will never watch that show again. Sometimes you just shouldn't cross that line for the sake of "comedy". And what's so sad, is there's been no outrage as of yet about the skit.

********

Now on to better things to talk about. I came across this tip for never having to buy green onions or leeks again. I thought it was so amazing, I had to share it:

Fill a Mason Jar (or other glass jar) to half with water. Add the rooted ends of a bunch of green onions or leeks and put in sunny window. Change water every two weeks. You'll be surprise at how fast the stalks grow. Cut off stalks you need for cooking. It will continue to grow and you save money.

Hope everyone is having a safe spring/summer. The French Open is here, and you know what that means:)!!!!

Happy Reading!!!

Book Review: The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches

I've just finished The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches (Flavia de Luce #6) by Alan Bradley

This is a cozy mystery narrated from the viewpoint of an eleven-year old (soon to be twelve) girl. After reading this book, I've come to two conclusions--I'm not into cozy mysteries. So, why did I give it a three-star instead of two or one? Because even though I might not have been able to get into it, I know other readers who like this genre will. First let me say, the writing is unique and superb. The way this author describes sounds and the atmosphere around you is unique in his own way, and that makes the story so vivid and alive. I really liked that part. His characters are so realistic; and it's a clean novel. If this author wrote suspense, I would definitely buy more of his books.

But the story just didn't hold my attention. And the second conclusion is, I don't like stories told in first person; even though he kept the point-of-view to one character and not every one in the book, is a plus.

If you like cozy mysteries, you'll like this book.

I'm going to try and read a few more books along my preferred genre before I get back to writing; and let's not forget, tennis is coming. So, there goes my time.

Thanks, Everyone! And Happy Reading!

Book Review: An Ordeal of Innocence by Agatha Christie

I was excited to purchase this book by the well-known author, Agatha Christie during Goodreads' Mystery Week. The Agatha Christie series on PBS are my favorite to watch, so I thought it would make an even better read because they always say, the books are much better—not always. Although it is not her fault, the formatting of this book is terrible. One moment you think different characters are speaking, when in actuality, it’s only one. That can be so confusing!

This is a cozy mystery which tends to go on and on with a lot of dialogue. And that’s what this storyline consists mostly of, lots and lots of conversation; very little action and description of settings and scenes; and you're constantly whiplashed from one place to the next. Instead of one or two point of views, you get the point of view of every character in this book; and they all are thinking the same thing, so besides point-of-view overkill, it gets rather repetitive and boring. And the characters read like lifeless cardboards. I felt nothing for any of them. I didn’t care who did it, or if they lived or died and went off to a happy-ever-after.

I was really disappointed given the status of Miss Christie. So I’ll just stick to her television series which are way better than the books.

A BODY RESURRECTED--blurb and excerpt

Hello, Everyone

My new release, A BODY RESURRECTED, is a suspenseful, romantic book with an element of Sci-Fi included. The story centers around two strong, courageous women, Mira and her descendant, Tina Leggs. In this post, I've included the blurb and an excerpt:

A Body Resurrected by Groovy Lee

BLURB:
Sixteen year-old Mira is an Egyptian girl who lives a quiet life in her small village in Lower Egypt 3303 B.C.E. But two visitors from the planet Aut are about to change that. The first “flying metal” that whips across the sky carries a murderous plague by the name of Demen. The second one that follows, brings a bounty-hunter named Weir. Against her father’s wishes, Mira becomes Weir’s accomplice in his mission to apprehend Demen before another woman dies by his hands.

But there’s a problem: Demen is now a powerful Pharaoh in the city of Sharkura. Will apprehending him cost Weir and Mira their lives?

Almay, California, USA, twenty-first century:

Tina Leggs oversees the artifacts and exhibits of the Graham-Arlee museum. She has no idea that the mummy exhibit that’s drawing huge crowds, is the same Demen that her ancestor, Mira, bravely faced centuries ago.

Demen is no longer a powerful Pharaoh. Now, he’s nothing more than a museum exhibit since he was discovered in the Valley of the Kings. But a rare occurrence will give him life once more. And his desire to kill the misery known as woman is as strong as ever.

Enter Q, a second bounty-hunter sent from Aut to capture him. Like Mira, Tina has been cast into the role of ally to this handsome visitor. Amid the destruction Demen is causing, and the risk to their lives to stop him, a deep love for one another has developed.

But, will she leave her family on Earth for the sake of that love?

EXCERPT:

Friday finally rolled around, and the ‘COME JOIN OUR ROYAL PARTY’ event commenced. This night was really thrown in honor of the sponsors whose massive contributions made it possible for some of the high-end exhibits to be toured at the museum, including Pharaoh Demen; it was the museum’s way of giving them first-look privilege, and to say thank-you.

Before going down the stairs to the lobby, Tina slid her hands over her solid navy-blue dress with the tiny bow at the base of her back, and touched at her pinned-up curls. After a deep, calming inhale and out, she descended down into a diverse crowd of a hundred or so in all shapes and sizes, mingling as they nibbled on the expensive hors d’oeuvres; and devouring the even more expensive wine and champagne that were passed around. She did her best, as she moved through the crowd, to ensure that everyone was content, and to let them know that Ms. Meryl would be giving her speech any moment.

Rihanna came up to her dressed proudly in a knee-length, gray chiffon number that accentuated her curvy form; her scarlet-red lips a stark contrast to her black hair and bangs cascading around her oval face.

“Wow. Did you come to work, or to hook a millionaire?” Tina gave her the once-over.

“Stop it,” Rihanna tapped her arm, as she tried to keep her coy smile from growing. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”

“Why, thank-you,” Tina curtsied and batted her eyelashes. “It’s almost time to begin. Ms. Meryl…” She stopped suddenly as her eyes touched on two familiar figures in the crowd. “I don’t believe it.”

“What?” Rihanna turned to see what she was glaring at.

“They’ve got some nerve.”

“Who?”

“Wait here.” Tina marched off, excusing herself as she passed between the guests. She made it to her objects of irritation and asked none too kindly, “How did you get in?”

Tiffany offered Tina an obstinate smile and slid an arm through Jack’s. And the fact that he wore a simple jacket instead of a tux, or couldn’t even bother to iron some of the wrinkles out of that plaid shirt; or that Tiffany couldn’t lighten up on the black eyeliner and lipstick, annoyed Tina even more.

“Well, I guess I don’t really need you to answer that question, do I? You hacked yourselves some tickets.” She squinted her eyes and shook her head. “Of all the low-down, sneaky—I bet you unloaded Grace on Bitsy, too.”

“She jumped at the chance,” Tiffany lifted her chin in defiance. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, we see some champagne with our names on it.”

“Of all the unmitigated nerve,” she mumbled to herself quite firmly as she closed her eyes tight and did a one-eighty. When she opened them again, it was to look into a pair of violet ones from across the room. For that mesmerizing moment, her eyes cruised over the man’s thick, raven colored hair that in a normal, day-to-day life, seemed wildly uncontrollable; but for tonight’s celebration it stylishly framed his masculine face almost to his strong shoulders. And, dear Lord, how that tuxedo enhanced that tight physique. When their eyes met again, he smiled and lifted his wine glass to her. She waved for a short second, and tried to smile as she swerved back around. “Great,” she exhaled firmly. One look at her watch reminded her it was time for the speeches to begin. She excused herself through the crowd for the platform.

Ms. Meryl, in a pearl-blue original, courtesy of her best friend, Vera Wang, stepped up to the microphone to begin her speech, with Mr. Thompson, the museum’s senior director, right next to her. All in attendance grew quiet and slowly gathered around. She welcomed everyone, and after thanking them for their generous contributions, prepared them for what they were about to see.

“I must remind everyone that this can be a bit intimidating at first. Now ladies, I want you to hold onto your husbands, your boyfriends, dates, whoever is beside you, because…”

While she was cautioning them, Tina stood off to one side and smiled out over the crowd. As her eyes touched from one face to the other, gauging their reactions, she met the alluring ones of the handsome stranger in the tuxedo. The twinkle in his eyes, and that teasing smile growing across his face, was breathtaking. The loud eruption of applause broke the spell and enabled her to look away. She swallowed her heart back down and turned to give her boss her full attention in an attempt to concentrate on her speech.

Meet author Louann Carroll

Let's meet author Louann Caroll--welcome!

1. I see your favorite genres are romance, science fiction, fantasy and horror. Do you write in all of these genres?

Yes I do. I even write children's books. I have a wide variety of interests which comes out when I write. The Gemini series is sci-fi but is apocalyptic as well romance. A Shadow of Time is horror and romance while Innocent Blood is paranormal crime based on a true story with a dash of horror and romance. I mean what is life without love?

2. What inspired you to become a writer?

I am an avid reader. One day, I'd finished all my Dean Koontz novels so I went looking for another author along his vein like John Saul. I couldn't find the kind of book I wanted to read (I was in the mood for an apocalyptic novel) so I wrote the Gemini series instead. I sent it to a publisher and the first of the series was picked up immediately. When that publisher went out of business, Gemini Rising was picked up by another press which will also support books 2 and 3.

My first children's book was Journeys, the Adventure of Leaf which is about death and dying. I lost my father when I was 5 and wanted to make sure I could communicate loss to my children. I sent it to a publisher who accepted it immediately. After that, I self-published the rest of the series. I wasn't happy with the way Journeys came out and wanted to retain control over the cover and the interior pictures.

I am also on the editorial staff of Blasting News U.S. They let me write commentary when I need to blow off political steam

3. Where do your ideas come from?

The Gemini series came in a dream. Like I said it is apocalyptic. You can rely on nightmares for some great material. A Shadow of Time came from a trip my husband and I took to Jackson, CA. Jackson is a small foothill town and we came across a burned out Victorian with just the fireplace left standing. The story just popped into my head. The Foundlings of Nirvana is a post-apocalyptic tale of genetic mutations which just flowed from my fingertips. I have no idea why. Lastly, Leanore's Tale, which is coming out soon is a short that goes along with A Shadow of Time. My characters are very real to me so sometimes I have to let them out so they can write their own story.

4. How many books have you written?

5 novels, 2 shorts, 4 children's books and numerous articles.

5. What authors have influenced you?

I have read a lot of horror over the years and a lot of romance. So Stephen King, Dean Koontz and John Saul with a lot of philosophical interest in Ayn Rand. For love, Rosemary Rogers. I met her once outside a book store where she was signing. Nicest person you every wanted to meet. I met Stephen King too. He wasn't scary at all.

6. Do you have any unusual writing habits?

It must be dead quiet. No music, no TV, no kids running around. Plus my writing room is covered in pictures of my family. The pictures remind me of who I am writing for and for those I am mad at I can convert them into a villain. Not that I have ever done that of course.

7. During your writing process, do your characters step in and take over?

Yes they do. They can be aggravating. My characters like slow beginnings and it's tough for me to get them up and going. They like to nap and think and ponder the imponderables However, once they are engaged they are hard to turn off.

Leanore demanded her book be written. She really is a nice lady but she lost her husband in another dimension and she wouldn't rest until she found him. Kate, in Gemini Rising is a bit on the whiny side. I had to toughen her up in the 2nd book in the series. in the 3rd, Kate's daughter Lucia shows her how being a bad ass is really done.

8. Congratulations on being an award winning novelist. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Don't give up. Write everyday. Write what you love and keep reading. Watch your punctuation too.

9. What is the hardest part about being an author?

Marketing. I am an introvert though you'd never know it. I come alive when I write, but as far as selling myself, I find it terribly hard. If anyone comes up with a perfect marketing plan just let me know.

10. Tell us about your latest book.

Well, since Gemini's original publisher went out of business my new publisher is doing another edit for the 1st and 2nd book and I am making changes and updates on the 3rd book in the series. As far as a new book, I am not sure. I have several different titles roaming around in my head. I like to write one book after another. I am not the type to have more than one book going at the same time. It stresses me out.

Meet Fantasy author--Kay MacLeod

Hello, Everyone

For the month of Feburary, I’ll be interviewing four Indie authors for you to meet. I’m so excited to begin this week--Feb. 6-19-- with our first two authors.

Let's meet Kay MacLeod:

First of all, tell everyone a little about yourself.

Hi guys, I’m Kay MacLeod, author of the epic fantasy series The Constellation Saga. I come from a little historical market town in England where I live with my fantastic husband and adorable kitty. I’m a huge fantasy fan- whether it’s games, films, books or just a good daydream, I love it all. I spend most of my time writing though, I must admit I’m a little addicted, there’s nothing you can’t do with a blank page and a cup of tea.

1.Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always made up stories, but for the majority of my life I just entertained myself with them. There were a few times that I wrote little bits and pieces but I mainly drew the characters I invented, I think I just never really had confidence in my ability to put the adventures I created into words. So, yes I wanted to, but it took a long time for me to work up the courage to actually do it.

2. What genre(s) do you write in?

Only fantasy, my current series is epic fantasy but I have some ideas I want to work on in the future that will marginally shift me to some urban fantasy and sci-fantasy.

3. Have you always been intrigued to write about fantasy?

Definitely! When I was a primary school kid and all my friends were reading the skinny little books they got from the library, I was delving into The Hobbit and Brian Jacques Redwall series. My dad has always been a huge fantasy fan and would get me excited about all the books he’d read, I just couldn’t wait to get into them. I devoured every fantasy book I could find and I wished I could write one too.

4. What is your writing process? Do your characters speak to you, or are you in charge?

I like to think we have a good relationship, my characters have a lot to say (I’m looking at you, Asher) and come up with great ideas on the way but you can’t always indulge every diversion and include every amusing piece of dialogue. I like to put a lot of effort into planning because it’s important when you create a series to know where you are going and to have a good foundation to build from, you can’t suddenly decide to throw a character a tragic background or a certain quirk if it hasn’t been present from the start. I think that people will see something new in the earlier parts of my series once they’ve read the later books. I’m more than happy to change any aspect of my plan during writing if a better alternative presents itself- the ending for Heirs of Power changed pretty dramatically when a very minor character became not so minor…

5. What authors have influenced you?

Anything you read has some kind of influence on you, if you really liked something you’re probably going to take inspiration from it and want to do something similar. All the times I’ve ever read anything with insta-love it’s made me firmer in my stance that I will never subject my readers to it!
The two authors that spring to mind are George R.R. Martin and Adrian Tchaikovsky and for the same reason- unpredictability. When you read their work you are terrified every time you read anything with your favourite character in because no-one wears plot armour in their worlds, every decision feels like it has a consequence and when something big happens there’s no way you saw it coming. Both authors are also masters of grey characters, everyone has flaws and redeeming qualities, no one is fully a ‘good guy’ or ‘bad guy’- just a person with their own agenda.

6. How many books have you written?

One so far, I’m about 70% of the way through the first draft of my second which should be out around the end of this year. There are so many more to come, I have way more ideas than time to get them all out!

7. What is the name of your latest book? And what inspired it?

Heirs of Power is the first book of The Constellation Saga. It’s about a group of people that have inherited different powers from ancient spirits that were first gifted to their parents. They are in a fight to save their world from an invading race of creatures that feed off life energy and are desperate to escape the destruction they have caused.

The inspiration first came from a power I had an idea for. I thought it would be a fun and unique ability for a character to be able to switch the position of two similar-sized objects if he’s touching one and can see the other. Yes, this includes other people so it’s great for combat or irritating your frenemy. I knew I didn’t want to write about a chosen one or a powerful individual, so I came up with other abilities for the rest of the team and then designed the conflict around the characters.

8. What's next for you as a writer?

Finishing the second book of The Constellation Saga, The Mage-Lord’s Legacy. I’m expecting this series to be four books long, I say expecting because it was originally a trilogy but, as I said, these guys have a lot to say!

9. What is the hardest part about being an author?

As much as I absolutely adore being an author more than anything else I’ve ever done, there are a lot of hard parts. I change my mind on the hardest thing depending on what’s frustrating me at the time but I think it’s just having patience. It takes a long time to plan, much longer to write, then rewrite, then there’s the bits you have to entrust to other people like beta reading and editing. The whole time you just want it to be done and perfected and out there and for people to be reading it. But the patience is what perfects it and you and the readers are always going to benefit from you holding back to make sure it’s done right.

10. What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Do it. Start now. That thing that’s in your mind that’s always there and those characters that are speaking to you, get them out! Because as soon as you start you’ll always wish you did it earlier, more ideas will pop up and those characters will start bringing friends. If you think it’ll be hard work and you’ll have to put a lot into it to get it done, you’re right, but it’s the most fulfilling experience once you’re there. And the feeling you get when someone talks to you about something that only existed in your head before- words can’t describe that.

New Book--A Body Resurrected

First, I just wanted to share this video with all of you. Warning, it will elicit "awws" and bring a smile to your face. I could look at this all day. Only in nature can a perfect circle be formed.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/video/wonder...

A Body Resurrected is a Suspense/Sci-Fi/Romance, in that order. I hope to have it ready for release by the end of Jan. (I hope:) Until then, here's the blurb:

Rio 2016--The Good, The Amazing, The Shameful

Hello, Everyone

I hope you're enjoying the last days of summer. First, I'd like to update you on my two projects: STILL IN FIRST DRAFT!!! That's it--that's as far as I've gotten. And the Olympics didn't help:)--But, I will work hard to have them ready for release in 2017 despite the US Opens:)

Now to the latest, biggest embarrassment: When Ryan Locthe was asked why he did what he did in Rio, and lie about it, all he could say was: "I don't know. I was drunk. Blah. Blah. Blah. Cue the fake tears. Let's consider:

They come from a country where certain groups are brought up to believe that they're entitled, they're superior, the country they live in is their footstool, and anyone different from them are just to be tolerated as subterranean beings, because after all, America is their right by heritage, and no other group deserve those rights.

So they go to a country that's considered not as powerful or rich as America; a country that's rich in diversity, with a popular label, "The mean streets of Rio." (and really, what country doesn't have mean streets?) where the people are labeled as most people of color--"Minorities or Ethnics". And these self-important young men felt that they could go over there, do what they want, disrespect their host country and it would be their American right.

They thought that the Rio police would be a simple-minded "ethnic group," who wouldn't have the intelligence to see through their lies and disgusting behavior, and would obviously believe every word they uttered. Applause to the Rio authorities for educating them.

While all the other guest countries treated their host country with dignity and respect, only one had this problem committed by a few--AMERICA! A land where someone can spew ignorant, hateful, evil, separatist jargon against anyone who doesn't fit a certain image, doesn't agree with them, someone who is hell-bent on keeping this country divided, and whose popularity in the polls opens the door for a chance at running this country. I wonder if Anne Frank would still believe her words if she saw history possibly repeating itself.

Of course, 99% of the American athletes presented themselves with dignity and respect, and displayed that to their host country. But by the actions of a few people, those 99% were pushed into the background while all around, the top headline was about "the lie heard around the world".

I can only hope that when memories of 2016 Rio are brought up in the future in news, in history, and at the next summer Olympics, that the accomplishments of Simone Biles, the Final Five, Michael Phelps, and those other great athletes who broke world records and brought home medals, won't take second chair to the scandal perpetrated by these few.

On a lighter note, I enjoyed the Olympics. I'm going to miss Usane Bolt!!! I just want to hug him! It started off with a bang and ran smoothly. And guess what? No terrorists bombs went off like everyone feared (I'm so glad) And when it was time to say good-bye, we were all able to celebrate a successful end. Here's to Tokyo 2020!

Works in progress

Hello, Everyone

I thought I'd take this opportunity to let you know about my WIP (works in progress)

Right now, I'm working on two novels: a romantic/suspense, and one I'm unable to put in a particular genre right now. They're both in first draft and untitled, and will be released early 2017. Of course, that may change. I would like to release one of them by the end of the year, but you know how that goes.

The romantic/suspense novel centers around a wealthy French family fighting over control of their beer dynasty after the death of the patriarch. It includes a treasure hunt, and according to the will, whoever finds the family heirloom, a necklace with a gold coin, will inherit the billion dollar company. Somehow, our heroine unknowingly has it in her possession while people are murdering one another to get their hands on it.

The second novel which does not have a genre as of yet, takes place in first century Egypt and spans centuries to the present day. I'm so excited about this one because it's my first story written with an essence of sci-fi and includes an evil mummy named Saltan. It has visitors from another planet, suspense, and romance. So you see why it doesn't have a specific genre. Maybe you can help me when I finish with the synopsis. I'm going to ask you for your help on this, so stay tuned.

I'll be so glad when these two books are finished. For one, I'm eager to release them. And two, I want to get back to reading other authors' works and reviewing them here.

I hope you're all having a nice, warm Spring and Summer. Of course, I'm still looking for that perfect chocolate pie:) And oh--my--goodness! Tennis season is almost here!!!!

Contact me anytime if you have any ideas, advice, or just to say, "Hi, Groovy", I love hearing from you:)
