Like the Dawn: 3 Fun Facts

1. When I originally was outlining Like the Dawn, Klaus and Hugo were originally Kristoff and Hans. If you have small children and/or are a Disney fanatic (or both like me!), you might recognize those names.
(For those of you without children or a particular fondness for Disney, Google the movie FROZEN) I ultimately decided to change their names since I already had an Elsa in there and that was just too much.

2. Without revealing any spoilers...the ending was how I envisioned the series ending when I first thought of it BUT at some point while writing In the Shadows, I almost second-guessed myself and considered writing a completely different ending. Ultimately, I went with my original plan....though I did toy with the idea of writing out the alternative ending and letting readers choose which version they wanted to read. LOL But that seemed pretty complicated.

3.Some of my google searches while writing Like the Dawn included:

* How to win a sword fight
* How to correctly punch someone
* Boudoir
* Secret passageways
* Scandinavian dances

Teaser Tuesday!

Unedited of course......

“You know, I wouldn't be opposed to being with you here, alone. I was just under the impression that's the last thing you wanted.”
“You can't know what I want.”

“And why is that?”

“Because I'm not really sure myself,” I admit quietly. He reaches out tucks a wayward strain of my hair back behind my ear. The small gesture sends shivers down my spine and my breath catches in my chest—which he notices immediately.

“That's not true.”

“What do you mean that's not true?” I snap.

“You know exactly what you want. You're just too afraid to admit it.”

“You don't know anything.”

“Perhaps, but I know your heart.”
Like the Dawn...  coming SOON

April 23, 2014

Hello!

Sorry for being such a slacker blogger! Actually I've kinda been a slacker when it comes to all social media lately. :/
I'm still working on Like the Dawn. It's been a much slower process this time around because not only did both my #1 editor and my #2 editor lose family members recently, I had an abnormal scan last Tuesday (my first annual scan post cancer and it's abnormal--boo!), so I've been a little stressed out about that.
I had a biopsy done yesterday and I should hear more by Friday--why do they make us wait so long for results?
Anyway, so since Heather and Maya were both unable to start editing right away, I decided to do another read through of my own and I've been adding in some bits and pieces as I go so it's taking me a while to get through it. My goal is to finish my read through by Friday (shooting for earlier) and send it to both of them this weekend.
Bad news is: an April release is not likely....good news is: it's almost May and it WILL be released sometime next month so YAY!
This July I'll be starting Sea Swept...I usually need about a month to recoup after a release so I'll be spending June just THINKING about the new story...plus I'm usually constantly checking Amazon and Goodreads for reviews the first few weeks after I release a book so I can't really concentrate on anything else the first month after a release. Yes, I read reviews...all of them...even the bad ones...I have thick skin.Okay not really, but I don't get my feelings hurt over bad reviews.
And I have way more good reviews than bad so it's easy to keep things in perspective.

As sad as I am to be saying good bye to Lark, I'm super excited to start a new adventure...and a little nervous, but I think that's probably normal.
Oh! And just so you know Sea Swept will more than likely be a stand alone novel...unless Komal Kant manages to convince me otherwise. ;) As of right now though, I'm saying stand alone.
After Sea Swept I have two (yes TWO!) contemporary romances I'll have to decide between for my next project. I guess we'll just see which characters demand my attention first.
Well, that's all I have for now! I'm going to fix dinner (have to feed the Blondies after all) and then I'll be editing for the rest of the evening so all of you will soon have Like the Dawn in your hands!

XOXO

Blog Hop! My Writing Process

It's time for a Blog Hop! I LOVE these things!

I was tagged by PA Warren who just published her first book LIFE AFTER.
It's pretty straight forward--just answer the questions and tag two other authors. :) Fun stuff!

What am I working on?
Currently I'm working on the final installment of the Lark trilogy, Like the Dawn. I'm almost finished writing my first draft--like 5,000 words away!

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Hmmmm.....well, I hope that my work is different because I'M different. :) I write YA Fantasy with a hint of comedy and romance. I also have two college-age romance books out right now (one I co-wrote with the amazing Komal Kant) and even though it's super popular right now, I can't make myself write a graphic sex scene--I blush and get all awkward about it so my NA books are clean with just a hint of steaminess.

Why do I write what I do?
Because I think I might secretly be a teenager in an *almost* 30-year-old body. I mean, my favorite shows are Teen Wolf, Awkward and Pretty Little Liars. Though I do like SOME grown up shows--I swear! I'm in love with Downton Abbey and The Walking Dead.
How does your writing process work?
I outline first. I'm the kind of person who NEEDS to look at an outline because I don't always write the story in order. So an outline is sorta necessary so I at least know what I'm supposed to be writing and how it relates to the other chapters. After I finish writing, I send it off to Heather Sloan for first round revisions and edits and then I send it to my beta readers and finally Maya Bentley for final edits. Then  I usually get too impatient to wait for the official release date and hit publish early!

Next Week on the Tour:Michelle Flick, author of The Owens Legacy and Walker
AND
Heather Diemer, author of the upcoming novel We Were Us

Thank you P.A Warren for tagging me! You can read her post here and you can find her at the following places:

A New WIP!

Don't worry! I'm not starting to work on this yet--I'm still finishing up Like the Dawn! BUT I did have an idea the other day that I had to write down for my next book because it wouldn't let me concentrate on anything else until I did.
You see, Lark is named after my youngest daughter. Mia started off as a "filler" name until I found the perfect name and then it ended up being perfect so it stuck.
Well, my oldest daughter was very upset that I didn't write HER a book. Sooooooooooo I told her I would some day, but I had no idea when because honestly, I didn't really have any inspiration for another fantasy story until recently.
The other day my husband forced me to watch this "documentary" on the Animal Planet about how mermaids are real and he was really getting into it. Like, seriously convinced that mermaids are real and everything so I teased him and said my next book I'd write about mermaids just for him.
I was mostly joking--I've never even read a book about mermaids before so obviously I've never really been interested in them but all of a sudden, I had an idea.
I laid in bed talking to Zach about my new idea (and he offered up his own ideas--none of which were any good) and found that I couldn't go to sleep (an all too familiar problem for me, if you remember this.). So I got up, got my notebook and the first writing utensil I could find (this time it was a blue Sharpie) and wrote down my idea.
The next day I wrote a two page outline and MAY have possibly bought the future book's cover already because my daughter saw it and loved it and since this one is her book, I figured she should get a say.
Remember how I said before that after I finished Like the Dawn I was going to take the summer off? Yeah, that's not going to happen now! I'll be working on a story about a girl named Addie who just happens to be a mermaid.
Now that this new story has a title, a cover and a good outline I'll be able to focus on Like the Dawn again (I swear I only took a day off! LOL) and crank out these last 5,000 words before I can officially start the editing process. But after I press "publish" on this blog post, you probably won't see me around much until I write "the end"--it's time to really focus on finishing Lark's story and making it the best of the three!

XOXO

Teaser Tuesday: Like the Dawn (Lark #3)

Time for another teaser! (Seriously can't stop staring at this cover...it's so pretty! I can't believe it's mine! Eden did an amazing job. It's totally my favorite of the three. The colors and the whimsical feel--I just adore it.)Okay enough about my cover....scroll on down for the teaser!
He smiles as though he's humoring me but I can tell he wants this. He wants to open himself up to me. And the more he talks, the easier it isto picture it—my life with him. He's good and kind and he loves me. I know that he would do anything for me, but I fear he may be right—because as easy as it is to picture being happy with him, I know that it's just as likely to end in heartbreak. Especially now that my heart has been changed and I'm not really sure where he fits any more.        But it is still nice, being here with him right now under the stars.

Teaser Tuesday: Like the Dawn (Lark #3)

Unedited and subjected to change of course but................here's a little teaser from Like the Dawn!

“Of course you aren't required to take a husband—not yet anyway—but everyone knows that males are naturally more competent rulers so it just makes sense.”
“What's that supposed—”
“And on that note—Princess, shall I escort you to your seat?” Grey steers me away quickly before I do something stupid like punch Blaise in the face. Males are more competent rulers? Is he serious? There is just something about stupid boys that makes me turn violent.
Somewhere in the back of my mind I hear Jacoby chuckling.
I halt my steps and Grey turns back to see what's wrong.
“It's nothing. Just the voices in my head distracting me like normal.”
“Mia, you know that's not exactly 'normal',” he says with that crooked smile that I love.
