And now let's revisit with novelist Marta Perry, author of the Amish Inspirational novel, The Rebel (Keepers of the Promise Book 3, Berkley Books, April 2016.)

photo Marty booksigning1_zpswx9m5y4w.jpg A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and her own Pennsylvania Dutch heritage led Marta to write about the Plain People who add so much richness to the heritage of her home state. Marta has seen over nearly sixty of her books published.

She and her husband live in a centuries-old farmhouse on twenty-five acres in a central Pennsylvania valley.

When she’s not writing, she’s reading, traveling, sewing, baking, or enjoying her six beautiful grandchildren.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I’ve visited almost 20 countries and hope to get to a few more before I’m finished.

--I once spent an entire parade on a float in a mermaid costume which didn’t allow me to walk.

--My husband says I’m a perfectionist about only two things—being a grandmother and writing.

I love the image of the mermaid, Marta. That would be fun in a story.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Rebel.

photo TheRebel_cover_zpsbthdk4hg.jpg Central Pennsylvania, current day.

Restless and adventurous, Amish Barbie Lapp has been stepping out among the Englisch. Minister Benuel Kauffman doesn’t approve of her choices, but he can’t deny the positive influence Barbie has on his wayward teenage sister.

As Barbie is drawn to the kindness beneath Benuel’s gruff exterior, the mementos she finds in a dower chest given to her by her grandmother, Elizabeth, provide the insight she needs to decide whether to fully embrace the Amish way of life or leave it behind for forever.

Lancaster County, 1960.

As working farms for the Amish become scarce, Elizabeth Lapp’s husband, Reuben, tries to persuade her that they would be better off moving north. But the prospect of leaving her close-knit community of family and friends frightens Elizabeth. Can she muster enough love and faith to leap into a new life?

Two women from one family, separated by decades, both find that the ultimate adventure takes place in the heart.

What is it about Barbie that will make your readers care about her?

Barbie is lively and rebellious, always looking for something different from the restricted life she’s known, but her warm heart leads her to take endless trouble for those who need help.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Unknown_zpsnwqfzixn.jpeg A young Harrison Ford!

How would you complete this sentence: Had I known twenty years ago what I know today, I would have  . . .

. . . done things in exactly the same way. Even though I’ve made mistakes and stumbled often, I’ve learned from every experience of my life, both personal and writing.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I recently read Linda Goodnight’s The Memory House and found it so moving. It’s about the ability to rise above bad experiences and forge a new life filled with family and love.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just finished a Christmas Novella that will be out in November from Love Inspired Books, titled The Midwife’s Christmas Surprise. What could be more Christmasy than a lost love returned, an unexpected baby, and a snowstorm?

And now let's revisit with novelist Beth Vogt, author of the contemporary romance, You Can’t Hurry Love (Howard Books, May 2016).

photo Beth s Portraits-Portraits-0153_zpsj4o5r2bd.jpeg Beth K. Vogt is a non-fiction author and editor who said she’d never write fiction. She’s the wife of an Air Force family physician (now in solo practice) who said she’d never marry a doctor—or anyone in the military. She’s a mom of four who said she’d never have kids. Now Beth believes God’s best often waits behind the doors marked “Never.”

A 2015 RITA® Finalist and a two-time Carol Award finalist, Beth is a contemporary romance novelist with Howard Books. Her 2014 novel, Somebody Like You, was one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Books of 2014.

In 2015, Beth introduced her destination wedding series with both an e-novella, Can’t Buy Me Love, and a novel, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. She continues the series in 2016 with the e-novella You Can’t Hurry Love (May) and the novel Almost Like Being in Love (June). A November Bride was part of the Year of Wedding Series by Zondervan.

Beth enjoys writing contemporary romance because she believes there’s more to happily-ever-after than the fairy tales tell us.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I’m a proud volleyball mom, thanks to my youngest daughter’s commitment to year-round volleyball. I’m learning the lingo and spending lots of time at tournaments with hundreds of teen girls competing against one another.

-- I didn’t enjoy coloring as a kid, but I’m trying out this whole “adult coloring book” craze. It’s relaxing and I also gifted coloring books to all my daughters.

-- One of my favorite writing tools? My Bose headphones. They are a great way to block out the world while I write and I get to enjoy all my Spotify playlists. I usually make a playlist for each book I write.

Wow, I wish I could do that, Beth. I have to have complete quiet to write.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of You Can't Hurry Love.

photo 51XYQt4ZL._SX326_BO1204203200__zpso0jmpw35.jpg I rewrote You Can’t Hurry Love so that it’s a very different story from the one I originally plotted. One key facet that stayed the same: The heroine is Elisabeth Straker, who was the best friend of Bellamy, the heroine in my e-novella Can’t Buy Me Love.

You Can’t Hurry Love is second-chance-at-love story and combines several elements of my own romance with my husband. Elisabeth (Lis) and Jamie are involved in a long-distance romance because Jamie is in the military – and that was true for my husband and me when we were dating.

What is it about Elisabeth that will make your readers care about her?

Elisabeth is the penultimate “always the bridesmaid never the bride” friend. In the past two years she’s been in nine weddings – always in the supporting role of bridesmaid or maid of honor. Here’s an excerpt from the e-novella that explains her mindset:

She was content with her life. Well, that wasn’t completely true, but she’d perfected the “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” role. No one suspected she wasn’t satisfied being single, as she hosted her friends’ bridal showers and purchased items off their gift registries. The gloss had worn off all things matrimonial, but she refused to let her deflated hopes ruin anyone else’s wedding day.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zpsdpef5upx.jpeg I always create a Pinterest board for my stories, including visuals of my main characters. I chose Zooey Deschanel for Elisabeth

photo images-1_zpsetkyi0go.jpeg and Theo James for Jamie.

If you’d like to share the opening line or lines to your novel, we’d love to read them.

High School Senior Prom
Woodland Park, Colorado

Tonight was almost perfect.

Short of dismantling the basketball hoops at either end of the high school gym, the prom decorating committee had transformed the area into a glimpse of Hollywood from yesteryear.

Couples swayed to the music coming from the DJ’s tower of speakers in one corner of the room. Strings of twinkling white lights and silver streamers hung from the ceiling. Round tables lined the perimeter of the room and black metal movie cameras were centered on the white tablecloths strewn with glittery gold stars. Faux strips of movie film wound around the camera bases and featured the graduating seniors’ photos in retro black-and-white. HOLLYWOOD was spelled out in iconic large white letters against the back wall next to the photo area with a lush red curtain backdrop. The aroma of buttery popcorn from the old-fashioned electric popper scented the air.

With a soft sigh, Elisabeth snuggled closer to Jamie, his arms tightening around her. Now this . . . this moment couldn’t be any better, even if it was the last dance of their senior prom. Mariah Carey crooned “Don’t Forget About Us,” and Elisabeth closed her eyes, imagining Jamie and she were alone under a star-filled sky. “Happy?” Jamie’s whisper tickled her ear, the warmth of his breath trailing down her neck.

Elisabeth tilted her head up. Jamie’s dark eyes sparkled in the reflection of the overhead lights. “Yes. This is just about perfect.”

“Just about . . .?” He shifted, leaning away from her. “What’s wrong?”

“I wish we had the whole summer—” Elisabeth pressed her lips together. She and Bellamy had talked about this earlier while they got ready for prom at Elisabeth’s house. Don’t let Jamie’s leaving later this summer ruin tonight. Have fun. Her best friend was right. Saying her thoughts out loud didn’t change the inevitable, even as Elisabeth’s words shadowed the present.

“Me, too.” Jamie’s steps didn’t falter as he continued to lead her in the dance. “But you know how hard I worked to earn the appointment to the Air Force Academy—”

“I know.” She forced her smile to reappear, hoping it hid any sadness in her eyes. “I’m proud of you, too. I’m going to miss you, that’s all.”

“I’ll miss you, too.” Jamie bent to brush her lips with his, pulling her closer. “And besides, technically I’m not the one leaving the state to go away to college.”

“You could have come with me to Biola.”

“But the whole point is for me to fly jets in the air force. And lots of couples do long-distance relationships. The good thing is, we live in the same hometown, so we’ll see each other for the holidays. And we’ll have fun planning our future after we both graduate college and get married. We’ll travel, and Uncle Sam will foot the bill.” Jamie shook his head, his lazy grin appearing. “Why are we being so serious? Tonight’s prom and we still have a few more weeks before I report to the Academy.”

Now I'm intrigued as to how she ended up in the "always the bridesmaid, never the bride" role after this youthful plan!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I read an advance copy of Cathy West’s upcoming release, The Things We Knew . Cathy is a close friend and I designate myself as her #1 fan. She’s an incredibly talented writer and this novel examines the challenges of family relationships that are interwoven with secrets.

I like Cathy's work as well. And she's a total sweetheart.

What are you working on now?

I’m plotting a new novel, working on the long synopsis, trying to get to know the characters and the direction the story is taking me. These are early days yet.

Have you ever been in – or would you ever want to be in – a long distance relationship? If you have – what were the challenges you faced? If you wouldn’t want to be in a long distance relationship – why not? What if your long wait for love brings you back to a second chance with your first love?

Thanks, Beth, for visiting with us and telling us about your novel.

Under the Dogwood Tree and Free Books!

Childhood love blossoms then fades to a distant memory for a young librarian and a dashing EMT. But a spunky grandmother, an overanxious dog, and a dash of divine intervention create the perfect environment for romance to bloom the second time around.

Before we look at today's book, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Breaking Free, by Jennifer Slattery, is:

tlhcoupon@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

As I do on occasion, today I want to introduce you to my latest release, the e-novella Under the Dogwood Tree (Forget-Me-Not Romances, March 2016), which is part of Forget-Me-Not's American State Flower series.

Here's a short synopsis of the story:

Bernadette Doyle thinks she’s put her life on hold for the summer, while she cares for Cookie, her aging firecracker of a grandmother.

But Cookie’s run-in with a spastic dog leads to Bernadette’s run-in with a handsome EMT who recognizes “Bernie” as his past childhood love.

The next three months of rekindled romance, uncovered crime, suffered loss, and explored recovery show Bernadette that her life is not on hold. Far from it—her life has just begun.

What is it about Bernadette and her hero, Micah Hart, that will make you care about them?

Bernadette and Micah were both teased as children--Bernie because of the very visible birthmark just below her ear, and Micah because he was chubby. As a result they bonded together as children and grew up to be sensitive, empathetic adults. Although their childhood friendship ended when their families moved elsewhere, the strengths (and weaknesses) of their young relationship are the very things that draw them back together upon crossing each others' paths again.

As I usually do with guest authors' books, I'm showing the actors I pictured while writing my characters. If there were a film version of this story, these are the people I imagine portraying my characters.

photo Bernie Doyle_zpsdfb3w1cc.jpg I saw my heroine, Bernadette Doyle, as this lovely young woman. I'm sure she's an actress on some show or in film, but I have no idea what her name is. She just has that Irish-heritage look I envisioned for Bernie.

photo Micah Hart_zpsavamkq2e.jpg And I pictured my hero, Micah Hart, looking like Alex O'Laughlin of Hawaii 5-0 fame.

I saw actress Beverly Polcyn as Bernadette's grandmother, Cookie.

photo Marybeth Logan_zpsy3byuwqn.jpeg And I had Anna Kendrick in mind as Bernadette's best friend, Marybeth Logan.

During these early days of the release, the novella is priced at only 99 cents. And I plan to give away a free copy to three subscribers or readers who answer the following question:

What kind of childhood struggle have you (or a loved one) had to overcome? How did that struggle influence you as an adult?

I'll draw names Monday, March 28. To enter, leave your answer below. "Please enter me" won't get you entered. The drawing is done by email, so leave your email address, like so: trish[at]trishperry[dot]com.

Also, I'd love it if you'd connect with me on Facebook. Just click on my name at the right of today's post.

Jennifer Slattery, March Releases, and Free Books!

photo BreakingFree_N1664109_zpsz6xg81b6.jpg Sometimes it takes losing everything to grab hold of what really matters.

Before we meet today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Amish Sweethearts, by Leslie Gould, is:

grandaddya@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Jennifer Slattery, author of Breaking Free (New Hope Publishers, April 2016), a women’s fiction story with slight romantic elements and a hint of suspense.

photo BCheadshot2013_zpst7cxykoi.jpg Jennifer Slattery writes for New Hope Publishers and Internet Café Devotions, and the group blog, Faith-filled Friends. She’s also a content editor for Firefly, a Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas imprint.

When not writing, reading, or editing, Jennifer loves going on mall dates with her adult daughter and coffee dates with her hilariously fun husband.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--So long as I have my laptop and plenty of peanut butter and books to read, I can go days without leaving my house.

--I love reading about diverse cultures.

--I prefer long, leisurely strolls with my husband to dinner dates at fancy restaurants.

A woman after my own heart on just about every one of those points!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Breaking Free.

photo BreakingFree_N1664109_zpsz6xg81b6.jpg Breaking Free is about two people who are enslaved to the secrets they keep.

Women’s ministry leader and Seattle housewife, Alice Goddard, and her successful graphic-designer husband appear to have it all together. Until their credit and debit cards are denied, launching Alice into an investigation that only leads to the discovery of secrets.

Meanwhile, her husband is trapped in a downward spiral of lies, shame, and self-destruction. Can they break free from their deception and turn to the only One who can save them? And will it be in time to save their marriage?

What is it about Alice and her husband that will make your readers care about them?

My heroine loves her family and will do anything to hold it together. She’s strong in the face of chaos and is determined to not only discover herself but also to survive.

My hero also loves his family, and his risk-taking personality has helped him climb the corporate ladder, although that same character trait lands him in a giant mess. But his love for his wife motivates him to climb out of his pit and fight fiercely for her love.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

My answer to this question, unfortunately, will reveal how out of touch I am. Remember when I said I could survive on books, peanut butter, and unhindered computer access? Well… I’m not much of a television or movie watcher. I’d rather spend my time reading. ☺ In other words, I have no idea what actor and actress should play the leading rolls in Breaking Free.

photo images-6_zpsdym5fne0.jpeg Just based on your book jacket, maybe Rachel Bloom, star of the television show, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (which I've never seen) for Alice

photo images-8_zpskode5gtt.jpeg and Chris Pratt for her husband.

If you’d like to share the opening line or lines to your novel, we’d love to read them.

I’d love to!

This place, these friends—her life—was exhausting. What Alice wouldn’t give to hide away . . . indefinitely. And yet here she sat in an upscale Seattle restaurant with her upscale Seattle friends, playing the part, while her latest keynote cycled through her brain again and again. Authenticity. Transparency. That’s the key to the Christian life.

Right.

You can read a free, 33-page excerpt here.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I just finished Could I Have This Dance?  by Harry Kraus. It’s about a medical intern completing her first year of residency while maintaining a relationship with her fiancé, who lives some distance away.

This story had a strong thread of suspense and planted numerous questions in my mind as I read. I knew someone was out to get the heroine, but I wasn’t sure whom this was. And I feared for her safety, and I wasn’t entirely sure she’d make it through residency. The writing was strong, I admired the heroine, and the premise was intriguing.

What are you working on now?

I’m revising what I hope to be book three in my Midwestern Romance Series tentatively titled A Different Kind of Love. Here’s the blurb:

Though she stands for everything he’s against, his heart won’t let him walk away.

All Robby wants to do is serve God, grow a godly family, and make a positive impact on the lives of others. But when a pregnant abortionist and a soon-to-be paroled father ignite the pain from his past, his mercy-filled love is overshadowed by a bitterness that threatens to destroy him. At what point can he walk away for good? And what will it cost him if he does?

Leslie Gould and Free Books!

photo AmishSweethearts_New_zpsx3idkxoq.jpeg Amish girl and Englisch boy fall in love and do everything they can to deny it.

Today we're visiting with novelist Leslie Gould, author of Amish Sweethearts (Bethany House, February 2016), her Amish romance with a contemporary twist.
photo Leslie Gould pro photo 5.1_zpsyauzo5d1.jpeg
Leslie Gould is the #1 bestselling and Christy Award winning author of twenty-two novels. She has a MFA in creative writing from Portland State University and teaches writing at Warner Pacific College.

Leslie enjoys traveling, hiking, and church history. She and her husband, Peter, are the revolving-door parents of four children and three cats.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I had two of my babies at home (planned!) and love the field of midwifery.

-- Even though I only write fiction (no non-fiction books), I teach composition and argument on the college level. Surprisingly, argument and fiction have a lot in common.

--I was a military wife for 30 years. (My husband retired from the Army Reserve last summer.)

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Amish Sweethearts.

photo AmishSweethearts_New_zpsx3idkxoq.jpeg Zane Beck and his Amish neighbor Lila Lehman have been best of friends since childhood. But just as Zane gathers the courage to discover if their friendship could develop into something more, her controlling father arranges for her to be courted by their bishop's son. Zane, heartbroken, joins the Army, running away from his shattered dreams.

The passing of time and the distance between Zane and Lila hasn't been enough to halt their--now completely hidden--feelings for each other. Any hope for their love grows even more impossible though as Zane's service takes a dangerous turn when he's deployed to Afghanistan. Being on the frontline, confronted with the hard choices of war, has him questioning everything, including whether he can continue to serve or not.

But all choices have consequences, and with Lila preparing to marry another, these one-time sweethearts struggle to shed the expectations of others to find a life together that they both still long for.

What is it about Lila that will make your readers care about her?

Lila aims to please others—her father, the bishop, and her community—until she realizes how deceptive she’s become. Once she desires to be honest with herself and others, she faces even more difficulties but finally begins to experience what it means to live authentically.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zpsvggafm7g.jpeg A young Nicole Kidman would play Lila,

photo images-1_zpshgsxt51x.jpeg and a young Leonardo DiCaprio would play Zane. ☺

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

Jane Eyre , because she’s honest, humble, and courageous. One of my favorite lines in all of literature is Jane’s line: “Reader, I married him.” Jane has a moral compass that guides her through both life and love, giving her a very believable “approach” the way she lives her life.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Steadman. I read it last year and then recently reread it for one of my book groups. It’s a riveting story with themes of light, love, sacrifice, and truth, all set in Australia after World War I. Each character’s motivation clearly defines their actions. I get so much out of reading a story a second time, as far as learning how the author “did it.” It’s a gripping story that’s been made into a movie (with a September 2016 release).

I loved that book! I actually listened to it on CD while commuting to work. The narrator was, unfortunately, a hipster mumbler, but once I got used to that, I was sucked deeply into the characters' world. I join you in recommending the book--everyone should read it before the movie comes out!

What are you working on now?

I’m finishing up Amish Weddings, the sequel to Amish Sweethearts and the last novel in my Neighbors of Lancaster County series. It’s going to be tough to say goodbye to these characters!

Angela Ruth Strong and Free Books!

photo Finding Love Sun Valley Medium_zpsj3q9iwec.jpg In Finding Love in Sun Valley, Emily Van Arsdale returns home to Idaho to film a white-water rafting movie with a rafting consultant who wants nothing to do with Hollywood even though he’s falling in love with the actress.

Before we meet today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of The Tethered World, by Heather Fitzgerald, is:

rsuebell@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's visit with novelist Angela Ruth Strong, author of the sweet inspirational romantic comedy, Finding Love in Sun Valley, Idaho (Mountain Brook Ink, rerelease February 2016).

photo Author Pic_zpsvprdrskl.jpg Angela Ruth Strong studied journalism at the University of Oregon and published her first novel, Love Finds You in Sun Valley, Idaho, in 2010.

With movie producers interested in her book (Beliefnet), she's decided to rerelease it and write sequels as a new series titled Resort to Love.

This Idaho Top Author and Cascade Award winner also started IDAhope Writers to encourage other aspiring authors, and she's excited to announce the sale of her first romantic suspense novel to Love Inspired Suspense.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I’ve ridden on the shoulders of a unicyclist.

-- I won a hamster ball race where I was the hamster.

-- I broke four ribs in high school when I was cheerleading and a basketball player ran into me and knocked me into the bleachers.

You've had a more physically active life than a lot of my other featured authors (including myself)!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Finding Love in Sun Valley, Idaho.

photo Finding Love Sun Valley Medium_zpsj3q9iwec.jpg Emily Van Arsdale never planned to be an actress. Her mom taught trampoline at the university level where a lot of students went on to work as stuntmen. When her dad got cancer, she took a job as a stunt woman to help him pay his medical bills then ended up accidentally becoming famous. She’s been too busy for any sort of romantic relationship, but when filming in Idaho, she finds herself attracted to the rafting guide.

Tracen Lake grew up in Sun Valley and can’t imagine why anybody would want to leave such a beautiful place—especially his former fiancé who dumped him to pursue her dance career in Hollywood. Emily Van Arsdale doesn’t seem anything like his ex, and she fits in great with his rough, fun-loving friends, but he can’t believe she’d choose him over future film roles. Such a relationship is just too good to be true.

What is it about Emily that will make your readers care about her?

Emily is energetic and sincere. She doesn’t hide her feelings for Tracen…or for the chubby, unicycle-riding, star-struck twelve-year-old who follows her around Sun Valley. She’s willing to give up anything to help others and hates having to learn a lesson on boundaries.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zpsvzn833hx.jpeg Ah…I love this question. The night I found out the book was being considered for a movie, I couldn’t sleep and spent the whole night on IMDb, trying to figure this out.

Tracen would be played by Josh Duhamel. Besides my husband, he is the cutest man alive.

photo images-1_zpsp06zunwq.jpeg And Emily would be played by Alexandra Daddario because of her blue eyes and big smile.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

The Scarlet Pimpernel . He was pretty much the first hero with a hidden identity. And I’m a sucker for hidden identities.

My classics book club might read that book this year. Thanks for the recommendation!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

My favorite novel last year was The Secret Life of Book Club by Heather Woodhaven. It captured me to the point that during the relaxation segment of yoga, I just laid there and thought about her characters. So quirky. So fun. So relatable.

What are you working on now?

I’m finishing up the first sequel to Sun Valley. Tracen’s little brother Josh gets to fall in love in Finding Love in Big Sky, Montana. Oh my gosh. I was thinking about this one in yoga today.

And then I’m writing Tracen’s baby brother’s story in Finding Love in Park City, Utah. I love these characters!

Plus, I just sold my first romantic suspense to Love Inspired Suspense, and I’m getting that one ready to come out next year.

Heather Fitzgerald and Free Books!

photo IMG_1902_zps4ctgfeud.jpg When Sadie’s parents are kidnapped, she learns of her family’s secret ties to creatures that once roamed the Garden of Eden.

Before we address today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Joshua's Mission, by Vannetta Chapman, is:

fishingjan@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's visit with novelist Heather Fitzgerald, author of the Young Adult Fantasy, The Tethered World (Mountain Brook Ink, February 2016).

photo Fitzgerald_IMG_0946_zpskvvwt88j.jpg Heather FitzGerald read voraciously to her kids when they were young enough to homeschool. Having always excelled in English and writing, she began to craft stories of her own when she could fit it in to her busy life. Eventually she had the time to blog and was selected as a reviewer for The Old Schoolhouse magazine (Homeschool Review Crew).

Through this avenue, she met successful author Susan K. Marlow. Susan was a faithful mentor and encouraged Heather’s gifting. Heather attended writer workshops and joined several writer’s groups, honing her craft, while continuing to blog.

She began The Tethered World about six years ago, and landed a contract with Mountain Brook Ink in Spring 2015. Heather has also enjoyed being a judge for Susan K. Marlow’s yearly writing contest for children.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

—I have a son who is autistic.

—I’ve taught ballet for 13 years at a homeschool fine arts school with over 900 students.

—Iced lattes are my muse.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Tethered World.

photo IMG_1902_zps4ctgfeud.jpg “Normal” means different things to different people. Such is the case for sixteen-year-old Sadie Larcen. Having five siblings: normal. Navigating a silent brother with autism: normal. Homeschooling: normal. A cosmetologist father: normal. A Bigfoot expert for a mother: normal.

Waking up to the police knocking on the door and missing parents: definitely not normal!

When life turns inside out for Sadie, she fights for as much “normal” as possible. It becomes a losing battle when she uncovers the reasons behind her parents’ disappearance and the truth about her heritage.

Sadie learns that her mother’s interest in Bigfoot, dwarves, and other lore extends beyond mere fascination. Her family has been entrusted with keeping the secrets of the Tethered World: home to creatures that once roamed the Garden of Eden. Sadie and siblings must venture to this land to rescue their parents; a journey Sadie fears and resents.

What is it about your lead character that will make your readers care about her?

Sadie is a sarcastic introvert that would rather read about adventures than experience them. Readers will connect with Sadie’s fear of the unknown and her anger towards her parents for the secrets they’ve kept. Her struggle is authentic. Sadie is a reluctant heroine.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Unknown_zps6wjsomen.jpeg I would want my main female character to come off a lot like Rory Gilmore from The Gilmore Girls.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

Just finished listening to the audiobook trilogy of Inkheart , Inkspell , and Inkdeath , by Cornelia Funke. I absolutely loved the character of Eleanor. She was a crabby, brash aunt who evolved from loving nothing but her collection of books to deeply loving her nieces family and doing anything to rescue them from the peril they faced. She made me laugh out loud.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The Inkheart Trilogy mentioned in the last question is my latest fandom. It’s a satisfyingly long fantasy tale that jumps off the page and cleverly weaves our own world into the world of a book that has been brought to life—quite literally.

Though each book from the trilogy was narrated by a different person, each actor brilliantly brought the characters to life. Would highly recommend experiencing the trilogy via audiobooks. These days I don’t do a lot of reading with my eyeballs :) Audiobooks are a great way to squeeze some reading time into a busy day.

I agree. I love listening to stories while I commute to and from the office.

What are you working on now?

Frantically finishing up book two of my Tethered World Trilogy.

Vannetta Chapman, Free Books, and February Releases!

photo Joshuas Mission_zpsmziy33mr.jpg When loss seems overwhelming … grace ushers in peace.

Before we address today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Trust Me, by Jo Huddleston, is:

lanehillhouse@ . . .

Congratulations! We'll get your e-book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's visit with novelist Vannetta Chapman, author of the Christian romance novel Joshua’s Mission (Harvest House, February 2015).

photo vc_zpsegi1fxhw.jpg Vannetta Chapman writes inspirational fiction full of grace. She has published over one hundred articles in Christian family magazines, receiving more than two dozen awards from Romance Writers of America chapter groups.

She discovered her love for the Amish while researching her grandfather’s birthplace of Albion, Pennsylvania. Her novel, Falling to Pieces, was a 2012 ACFW Carol Award finalist.

Chapman was a teacher for 15 years and currently writes full time. She lives in the Texas hill country with her husband.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I have 2 dogs and 2 cats—all from our local animal shelter.

--I have extremely low blood pressure, so I often wear gloves while I type!

--I love to quilt! I’m only a beginner, but it is one of my fav things to do.

Aw, I like that you rescued your pets!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Joshua's Mission.

photo Joshuas Mission_zpsmziy33mr.jpg Joshua Kline travels from his farm in Oklahoma to offer aid to an English town on the gulf coast of Texas after a category 4 hurricane has ravaged the area. He brings his brother with him, who needs a change of environment. The last thing he wants for Alton is another brush with the law. He is pleasantly surprised when he hears that Becca Troyer, the bishop’s granddaughter, plans on joining their team.

What will Joshua find when he arrives in Texas? A lack of electricity, certainly, which poses little problem for the Amish volunteers as they help restore order from destruction. But a budding romance? A call from God? And a possible healing of his relationship with Alton?

Joshua’s Mission is a story of love, forgiveness, and the grace of God that carries us through even the worst situations.

What is it about Joshua that will make your readers care about him?

Joshua is a guy who enjoys his life—farming. He feels no need to travel, has never considered going on a mission trip, and is shy around girls. But suddenly he finds himself on a bus with his brother and two girls from his community. They are headed toward the Texas gulf to help with disaster recovery. They are headed toward a future that Joshua could not have imagined.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead role?

photo images_zpsn9w53sn8.jpeg I often picture Matt Damon as my leading guy, though in this case he would have to, you know, look Amish.

I've done a relatively thorough search, and I can attest that Matt has never come close to playing Amish. But at least he's wearing a simple blue shirt here...

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

I really like Charlie Everman in this story. He’s an older guy who has experienced recent loss, and he’s just trying to find his way. He’s trying to stay true to his faith and help those in his community, but he’s not sure that there’s a place for him anymore. Charlie won my heart from the first page.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I recently read The Most Famous Illegal Goose Creek Parade by Virginia Smith. This book made me laugh and kept me engaged.

I love Ginny Smith!

What are you working on now?

The second book in my upcoming series, The Remnant. The book’s title is Raging Storm, and wow—there’s a lot of raging and storming going on. Life in Abney, Texas is predictable and safe—until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology. In book 2, Shelby Sparks is on a desperate mission to find insulin for her son.

99-Cent E-Book Versions of The Guy I'm Not Dating and Too Good to Be True!

Harvest House is offering the e-book versions of The Guy I'm Not Dating and Too Good to Be True at just 99 cents through February 29!

Here's a little information on the storylines:

The Guy I'm Not Dating

Kara Richardson has finally suffered one breakup too many. She's decided to go the no-dating route to romance, although she's not quite sure how that works.

She couldn't have picked a worse time to meet Gabe Paolino. Gorgeous men hardly faze Kara. A personal trainer, she works with hunks every day. But Gabe, the handsome young deli owner in town, proves way too available and way too challenging for Kara's vow of friendship. How will she adhere to her new lifestyle without scaring Gabe away?

Enter matchmaking friends, a strange elderly aunt, three demanding teens, and one hard-to-take vixen with eyes for Gabe. Add an overcrowded road trip and plenty of God's blessings, and Kara may discover that the guy she's not dating is the best boyfriend she's ever had.

You can get The Guy I'm Not Dating on Amazon or Google Play

Too Good to Be True

Your classic romantic heroine swoons after meeting Prince Charming in, say, an enchanted forest. But Rennie Young would never have met the gallant Truman Sayers if she hadn't fainted immediately beforehand--in the boys' sportswear department of her local Wal-Mart.

Ren, a 20-something elementary schoolteacher, has reluctantly accepted that her husband--who divorced her over a year ago--is not coming back. Tru Sayers, a handsome young labor-and-delivery nurse, seems like a gift from God. Ren's friends and Tru's siblings are supportive and excited about the match. But there are . . . complications.

Ren's control-freak mother is desperate to match her daughter up with "more suitable" men. Tru's mother wants Tru to remain a bachelor--and at her beck and call--forever. Is it possible to honor your parents while on the verge of killing them?

Despite conflicts, embarrassments, and a pity binge or two, Ren learns how to lean on the Lord and His loving will for her. Just when Ren thinks her happiness is slipping away, God shows her that no miracle is too good to be true.

You can get Too Good to Be True at Google Play

I hope you enjoy the books and the attractive price!

Jo Huddleston and Free Books!

photo Trust Me-300 dpi_zpstb0onwjt.jpg A mine owner, an elegant lady, seductive voices that scoff at trust.

Before we address today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Infusion of Love, by Darlene Franklin, is:

pleblanc_1@ . . .

Congratulations! We'll get your e-book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's visit with novelist Jo Huddleston, author of the Inspirational Southern Historical Romance, Trust Me (Forget Me Not Romances, a division of Winged Publications, August 2015).

photo JO PK b2 copy 2_zpsb3qy9fme.jpg Jo Huddleston is an Amazon Top 100 Bestselling author of books, articles, and short stories. Novels in her West Virginia Mountains Series and her Caney Creek Series are sweet Southern historical romances.

Her novels are endorsed by Amanda Cabot, Cara Lynn James, Sharlene MacLaren, and Ann Tatlock.

The redeeming story of God’s pursuing love is the foundation of all her novels, and in them you will find inspiration, hope, and gentle stories that are intriguing and entertaining. About her nonfiction books, a reader wrote that she offers spiritual tonic and hope.

Jo is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers, the Literary Hall of Fame at Lincoln Memorial University (TN), and holds a M.Ed. degree from Mississippi State University.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I could never do a cartwheel.

--I don’t do elevators very well.

--I’m claustrophobic.

I would imagine that third item influences the second!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Trust Me.

photo Trust Me-300 dpi_zpstb0onwjt.jpg Loreen Fletcher has suffered heartbreak. She resolves never to trust a man again. She has earned a respected position with no help from anyone, especially not from a man. At thirty-six, Loreen knows loving brings inevitable misery, and she won’t pick at that scab again.

Claude Capshaw’s life has taken another detour. Things that drove him no longer motivate him. Nothing fulfills him anymore—except that elegant lady at West Virginia University. Why won’t she trust him when he tells her he’ll never betray her?

What is it about your lead character that will make your readers care about her?

Inwardly Loreen longs for someone to care for her, someone she can love in return. When alone and her resolve weakens, she talks herself out of the silly notion of love. But it’s that innocence of a little girl inside of her that makes the reader wants to shake her and tell her about the good man she’s determined not to love.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zps602maepn.jpeg Loreen Fletcher would be played by a blonde Sandra Bullock.

photo Unknown_zpshtvvkqdl.jpeg Claude would be played by a young Harrison Ford.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

Scarlett O’Hara in the movie, Gone with the Wind . She is the original Steel Magnolia.

Definitely a tough cookie! What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

A Plain Love Song by Kelly Irvin. This is an Amish story that dares to depict an Amish young lady facing the full reality of worldly temptations when she’s away from her close-knit community.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on book #3 and conclusion of the West Virginia Mountains series, titled Promise Me. Expected release date is spring 2016.
