Jodie Bailey writes novels about freedom and the heroes who fight for it. Her romantic suspense, Crossfire, won a 2015 RT Reviewers Choice Award and her contemporary romance, Quilted by Christmas won a 2014 Selah.

She is convinced a camping trip to the beach with her family, a good cup of coffee, and a great book can cure all ills. Jodie lives in North Carolina with her husband, her daughter, and two dogs.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I know how to ride a motorcycle and once owned a Harley. Now, I’m content to be a passenger and let my husband do all of the paying attention to the road.

--I love banana sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise. My husband thinks that’s weird. He’s from Michigan. He doesn’t understand.

--When I was 18, I started having panic attacks that kept me pretty much chained to my home for almost three months. On my 28th birthday, God completely freed me from fear.

Wow, that's a long time to be chained. What a blessing to have that release!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Breach of Trust.

Former soldier Meghan McGuire is about to step into her dream running a home for troubled foster children. But when the partner she thought was dead steps out of the shadows, her life takes a sudden turn into a past he can never uncover.

Tate Walker never thought he’d see Meghan again, and he certainly never thought she’d be the target of a hacker who is determined to undermine the U.S. military. Now, Tate has to protect Meghan from an enemy who can’t be seen while he searches for information she wants to keep hidden.

 As the seconds tick toward a hacker’s revenge, Tate and Meghan have to battle for their country… and for each other.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Tate and Meghan are both people with pasts they aren’t exactly proud of. Meghan’s is criminal. Tate’s is relational. Both have been wounded and are fighting to come back from that, to become whole individuals. They’ve tried to do it for themselves forever, and both have to come to the realization that only God can heal them. And only with each other are they whole.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

The pictures in my head can never quite match up to anything I find in the real world, but after a whole lot of trying, I think Tate is a lot like a young Gerard Butler.







And Morena Baccarin—when her hair was chin-length—would fit Meghan.



Let’s fantasize that your publisher is sending you to explore the setting of a new novel. Where are they sending you? Why that setting?

The novel I’m currently writing is set partially on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, on Hatteras Island. I’ve always wanted to set a book there. It’s my favorite place in the world. As much as I’ve been there, they’d have to send me back because I really do want to capture the feel of the place. To be sitting there when I write the scenes. I love it there. I want it to be perfect and not to get one detail wrong. In fact, I think they should send me to live there for a whole year so I can really get a feel for what it’s like to be an islander. Yep. Let’s do that.

I love Hatteras, too. There's just something different, compared to other east coast beaches.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I was way behind the times on this one, but I finally read Jim Rubart’s Rooms . I literally had to keep putting the book down to pray and hash some things out with God. I’m certain now that it took me so long to read it because God wanted me to read it when I did. It hit me right where I was. On a different note, I devoured the latest YA by Jenny B. Jones, I'll Be Yours . Wowza. I want to write like her when I grow up.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on the first book in a series about a Special Forces soldier and his sisters—a government researcher being hunted by a serial killer, and a humanitarian aid worker who finds herself at the center of a conspiracy—who are fighting to bring their father, who is in league with terrorists, to justice.

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She seeks to glorify God in all that she writes—except for that graffiti phase she went through as a teenager.

She resides in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, where she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op. An Anglophile at heart, she runs away to England every chance she gets, under the guise of research. Really, though, she’s eating excessive amounts of scones while rambling around a castle.

She is the author of The Captive Heart, Brentwood’s Ward, A Heart Deceived, Undercurrent and Gallimore, which are all historicals. But she did veer off the path to pen a cozy mystery, Out of the Frying Pan.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I hate fruit. No, really. Not even strawberries tempt me. It’s a texture thing.

-- Rollerblading is my exercise of choice.

-- Boxers (as in the canine variety, not Fruit of the Loom) are my favorite pets.

Now, why did I immediately picture underwear, not dogs,when you first said that? I appreciate the clarification.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Captive Heart.

On the run from a cruel British aristocratic employer, Eleanor Morgan escapes to America, the land of the free. But freedom is hard to come by as an indentured servant, and impossible when she’s forced into an even harsher contract—marriage to a man she’s never met.

Backwoodsman Samuel Heath doesn’t care what others think of him—but his young daughter’s upbringing matters very much. The life of a trapper in the Carolina backcountry is no life for a small girl, but neither is abandoning his child to another family. What is it about Eleanor that will make your readers care about her?

Sometimes life isn’t fair. Other times it’s downright harsh. Everyone struggles with issues that are impossible to overcome. Drawing on God’s strength for courage, Eleanor faces her trials head on—and she’s got many. She fails frequently, especially when she tries to do things on her own, but for the sake of the little girl that’s in her care, she keeps trying.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

Anson Mount is definitely my hero Samuel Heath.





Eleanor Tomlinson would make a great Eleanor Morgan.




Love her! Poldark is one of my favorite shows.

Let’s fantasize that your publisher is sending you to explore the setting of a new novel. Where are they sending you? Why that setting?

I’m going to Ironbridge in England. One word for the place: enchanted. Set on the ridges of the Severn Valley River Gorge, this little town is unbelievably picturesque and loaded with history, most notably the birthplace of the industrial revolution. I’m itching to write a story set there, and what intrigues me most is the little toll house at the end of the bridge.

Ah, you do tempt me. My Mom is British (war bride), and I have yet to get over there. You make it sound so beautiful.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The Pursuit of Tamsen Littlejohn by Lori Benton. I’m always behind on my reading, so this isn’t a new release, but it is one sweet read. I love the history and I especially love the relationship between the main characters. Lori Benton pulls of tension between the hero and heroine like none other.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on the first book of a series of 3 entitled Once Upon a Dickens Christmas series. Set in merry ole Victorian England, each story revolves around a “second-chance coin.” Here’s a blurb:

Christa MacDonald knew she wanted to write from almost the first moment she learned to read. After filling notebooks with what was probably very bad poetry, she decided to major in English and see if she could make a go of it.

While attending college in Massachusetts, eventually earning a BA in English and Sociology, Christa MacDonald fell in love with nearby Cape Ann and dumped her plans of moving out West with the rest of the cool kids and instead got busy with life.

After a series of jobs doing everything from counseling adults with developmental challenges to writing magazine abstracts, she ended up in the corporate world as an operations manager. Ten years, one husband, and three kids later she decided it was time to get back to writing. She signed up for the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and she hasn’t stopped since.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I was a nomad as a kid. We lived in 14 different places before I was 5.

-- I love all things Disney.

-- Almost no one can beat me at the card game Blink. My daughter is probably the only one, so it must be a genetic skill.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Broken Trail.

Katherine Grant takes the job at Sweet River Christian Academy hoping it will be a vacation from her high-powered career. With the school director on a power trip and evidence of shady dealings, there’s nothing relaxing about it. Maybe it would be easier if she wasn’t so distracted by Captain MacAlister, the local cop she can’t get along with, yet can’t get out of her head.

Mac doesn’t need the kind of trouble he believes Katherine will bring. He’s got enough to deal with from poachers to drug crime, but when he meets Katherine he’s drawn in by her intelligence and strength, despite getting burned by her quick temper. When Katherine reveals her feelings Mac doesn’t hesitate to respond. If only their scars, both seen and unseen, didn’t threaten to tear them apart.

Two wary hearts must soften and two steel wills bend if they have any hope of making it down the broken trail to love.

What is it about Katherine that will make your readers care about her?

Katherine is keeping up appearances, wanting everyone to think she’s calm, efficient, smart, and capable, but inside she’s a bit of a mess. I think readers will see some of their own struggles in her journey.

Scotland. I would love to write a cozy mystery about an American transplant in Scotland.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Actually the last novel I read was a re-read for me, Anne of Green Gables . It was like visiting an old friend. If readers haven’t checked out that series by LM Montgomery, they should run out right now and pick them up!

What are you working on now?

Currently I’m finishing up the sequel to The Broken Trail and adding to the outline for the third book in the series.

Snowe feels she’s committed a horrible sin, one that isn’t worth forgiving. She hasn’t darkened the door of a church in years, and she hasn’t uttered a single prayer.

She’s forced to return home to Maine when her aunt passes away and leaves her a huge and unexpected inheritance.

Not only must she come to grips with what she’s done, but the forgiveness God longs to shower upon her.

Aw, I love her already.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

I think readers will love how real Snowe is, as well as Tanner. They don’t pretend to be something they aren’t.

I would want to go to Maine. My grandparents grew up in Maine, and I desire more than anything to see where they grew up!

I’m working on Shamrock Inn, a sequel of sorts to Christmas Snowe.

What I love about Polly is how deeply she cares for the children and connects with them, even at their most difficult.

Mitch Taylor would be played by Ricky Schroeder (and the guy on the cover even looks like him!).





Polly MacDonald would be played by Rachelle Lefevre.

They’re sending me to England to do research for a Regency novel. I love Regencies, but I don’t feel like I can accurately do the setting justice, so I would need to spend a lot of time in England doing further research.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I really loved His Texas Princess by Kristen Ethridge. For me, it was a light, easy read, and it was a nice escape from some really tough days.

What are you working on now?

I’m getting ready to turn in a book called An Unlikely Mother, which will come out in May 2017 from Love Inspired Historical. It’s a story in which a young Colorado socialite trying to overcome her reputation as a hurtful gossip and a miner who is--unbeknownst to her--the mine owner undercover, become enamored with one another while caring for an orphaned child.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I have two hedgehogs. Yes. They are as cute as you’d think. And pokey. And a wee bit high-maintenance.

-- I always wanted to sing on worship team but have no training as a singer and once my voice was called “twangy” so I have never felt like I could. One day a few years ago I felt like God was calling me to join our worship team. Though I’m still insecure about my voice I sing almost every Sunday and it feels so good.

-- I love being in my fifties. Freedom from people pleasing and grandkids is the best season of my life.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Out of the Frying Pan.

Retired sisters-in-law, Fern and Zula, stumble over the retirement community’s dead cook—and clearly this is not the usual cholesterol related death. Their amateur sleuthing almost upends the crime scene.

Detective Jared Flynn finds himself facing past ghosts and clutching, concoction-wielding grandmas as the complicated investigation unfolds. Fern and Zula’s niece KC enters the picture, and Jared’s world turns on its axis—especially when the people he’s grown to care about are endangered. He doesn’t hesitate to dive into danger to save them. Turns out that Paradise is not the quiet little piece of peace the entrance sign promises.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Goodness. We have four equally lovable characters. A zany, full-of-life and color self-made chef diva, Zula, with a heart the size of a unicorn’s. A reserved, mystery-loving pilates teaching artist named Fern, who prefers God’s palette of colors and creation over her sister-in-law’s. Detective Jared Flynn solves crime in smaller town Florida after nearly losing his life in the big city cesspool. His heart is as bruised as his body, and he’s longing for someone to be his first good morning and last hug of the night. Kansas City resident and niece of the Hopkins’ ladies, KC, just wants to curl up and be left alone so she can heal from her crushed heart. But instead she goes to protect her aunts. Fifi the wonderdog only requires regular walks, treats, and maybe some cute new outfits.

Tell us about a scene in your novel and name a piece of music that would make good background music. 

 Cue "Book of Love" for this scene . . .

Jared and KC enter Zula’s garden, which is exploding in color and scents, and now tension.

KC needs to unload some baggage, and Jared’s thoughts are swirling.

In a sudden explosion of emotion, KC loses control. Jared helplessly watches, amazed at the melting makeup and the canvas of her face turning into a modern art piece. Even more amazing to him are the feelings that well up inside his heart as she spills all of her pain at his feet.

Now cue "Viva la Vida."

While KC and Jared are outside, Fern and Zula are forced to put aside an argument and focus on an impromptu dinner party. Because Zula cannot serve anything but a feast, Fern puts on her apron and conjures her inner Julia Childs for Chef Diva Zula. When Zula enters the zone, performing her culinary magic in a graceful and beautiful dance, Fern observes Zula produce extra arms while she cooks, flips, whips and ladles all at the same time. But as soon as the aprons come off, the verbal jousting resumes with a mighty clash.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

If I Run by Terri Blackstock. I just finished it and it was full of tension, intrigue and characters I rooted for. Terri knocked this one out of the park. Murder, broken yet growing and kind characters, tight prose, private investigator procedural, and a plot that could have fallen out of a current newspaper. A page turner that leaves me hoping for book two to hurry up.

What are you working on now?

Book number two for the Hopkins sisters. Zula is planning a big event. Fern is working on damage control.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I love Matt Damon and the Jason Bourne movies … and anything starring Tom Selleck.

-- I don’t drink coffee at all … except if I go down the mountain to the big city of Lewiston to shop, then it’s a latte or frappuccino or an ice cream flavor.

-- I rode horses only because my late hubby, Stephen, enjoyed that activity, to spend time with him. However, I never felt real comfortable around them on my own, even though I do think they’re beautiful animals, and love to watch them run.

Yes, I'm with you there, Janet. I think they're gorgeous animals, but they're big and heavy, and I've never been a comfortable rider.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Down Squash Blossom Road.

Cowgirl Reba Cahill’s schedule is full. Save the family ranch. Free her mom from a mental institute. Solve a murder and kidnapping. Evade a stalker. Can she also squeeze in romance?

Reba tried to focus on ranch duties, to help out her widowed grandmother. But a crippled Champ Runcie returns to Road’s End, Idaho in a wheelchair and seeks revenge for the accident that put him there. He blames Reba’s horse. Meanwhile, a letter from her estranged mom forces her and Grandma Pearl back on the road: I can leave now. Come get me. Love, Mom

When they arrive in Reno, her mother issues a demand and refuses to return to Idaho. They head west instead. In California, Reba’s friend Ginny’s marriage is on the rocks. The family business is threatened. And squabbles turn deadly.

Reba digs deep for stamina to forge a relationship with her mom and escape a crazed man’s obsession. She also faces an uncertain future as a trainer offers her another horse … and maybe more.

What is it about Reba that will make your readers care about her?

Reba was abandoned by her mother on the doorstep of her grandparents ranch home when she was three years old. Then she eventually discovers lies in her search for family and betrayal stunts her attempts at love. In the pursuit of justice, she struggles to overcome bitterness and choose to trust in God when much in her life and others close to her seems so unfair.

Tell us about a scene in your novel and name a piece of music that would make good background music.

Reba has high hopes that she and Soren Patrick, the horse trainer, will make a loving, compatible couple, then she thinks she sees him on a Las Vegas boulevard with another woman. She’s devastated. An old Doris Day song from the 1940s would work well for background (especially since Reba heard her grandmother playing it on an old vinyl record on a phonograph earlier in the story) … “Again, This Couldn’t Happen Again”

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The last three novels I read within two weeks and I really couldn’t pick just one of them. Each was very different but kept my interest throughout and impressed me with the characters, research skills, and writing style. All three authors were new to me, but recommended, so I grabbed the chance to try a sampling of their work when I had a break in writing. I hope to read more by each of them.

From Russia with Love (The Heirs of Anton Book 1) , by Susan May Warren … enjoyed the modern Russian setting, the spunky main character, and the romantic suspense story full of adventure.

A Stillness of Chimes , by Meg Moseley … a well-written southern story of childhood friends, memories, and a haunting mystery

Silenced (Alaskan Courage) (Volume 4) , by Dani Pettrey ... good blend of romance and suspense; loved the uniqueness of the rock climbing skills of the main character.

What are you working on now?

After the book launch of Down Squash Blossom Road, I hope to re-release about nine more of our out-of-print children’s books, including The Crystal Blake Adventure Series (9-12 yrs old). Then I’ll be adapting several former devotional books into a revision entitled Grace Spilling Over/True Stories of God’s Tender Mercies.

As soon as I’ve completed these projects, I’ll begin Book 3 of The Trails of Reba Cahill Series with the working title: Beneath a Camperdown Elm. Most of the research has been done for this conclusion of Reba Cahill’s story and a number of scenes have already been exploding in my mind. In one way, it’s hard to wait to get started with the next book in the series. In another, I truly need the break for my mind and any semblence of a social life by taking on a more relaxed schedule and different pursuits.
