Heather Fitzgerald, September Releases, and Free Books!

photo IMG_3632_zpsncwgheo8.jpg Keeping the Flaming Sword of Cherubythe out of the wrong hands may cost Sadie her life, a price she’s not certain she’s brave enough to pay.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of When Death Draws Near, by Carrie Stuart Parks, is:

psalm103and138@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Heather Fitzgerald, author of the YA Fantasy novel, The Flaming Sword (Mountain Brook Ink, November 2016).

photo IMG_6681_zpsjr1qu7dl.jpg Heather FitzGerald lives in Texas with four someones that call her mom and one special someone that calls her his wife. She homeschooled her now grown children--one of whom is autistic--and teaches ballet and creative writing at a fine arts school in Forth Worth.

Heather is a member of the North Texas Christian Writers, ACFW, and helps to facilitate the Manet writer’s group in Fort Worth, Texas. She loves drinking ice lattes, cloud watching, and getting lost in a good book.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

—In the 9th grade I won a limo ride, dinner, backstage passes, and 7th row tickets to see Elton John. As only a mildly interested fan, the enormity of the event was lost on me at the time. Too bad time travel isn’t a thing.

—There’s a disco ball in my den because, you know, it’s a disco ball! It’s groovy and sparkly and says fun just by hanging around.

—My favorite bible verse in regards to creative endeavors is Proverbs 8:12, in the KJV it reads, “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.” When I read that at about 9 years of age I took it very seriously as something the Lord would do in my life. In some way, He would give me witty inventions…and I believe with my writing, among other things, He has.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Flaming Sword.

photo IMG_3632_zpsncwgheo8.jpg Sadie Larcen and her family are slowly recovering from their life-altering trek to the Tethered World. That is until their aunt arrives clutching a mysterious letter and sporting a black eye. The letter that Aunt Jules shares with the family writhes with sinister implications. A new and menacing enemy has slunk from the shadows and is conspiring to seize the most powerful piece of weaponry in the land: The Flaming Sword of Cherubythe. The sword must—at all costs—be kept from the enemies who lust for its power.

The threat extends to Sadie’s autistic brother Brock. As High King in training, he now resides in the Tethered World, within close proximity to the sword. It’s apparent that drastic measures will be required by all in order to protect what’s most important. Can Sadie once again confront her disabling fear, stare evil in the face, and walk away whole—let alone alive?

What is it about Sadie that will make your readers care about her?

Sadie is not the average YA teen girl who is strong, independent, and ready to kick someone’s butt. She’s sarcastic and bookish and takes on the roll of heroine with reluctance. Book 1, The Tethered World, brought her into the adventure mentally kicking and screaming. Her trip back in The Flaming Sword is more readily accepted as she learns to embrace her unique purpose, though still with witty, and hesitant participation.

Also, I’ve added a second POV (a third one will be added in the next book, as well). Readers will see what’s going on through Sadie’s brother Brady’s eyes, providing an element that the guys will relate to quite well. Brady is courageous, loyal, and protective, eager to do what’s right, even when it’s dangerous.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Unknown_zpsb9vhzk6o.jpeg Not a concept I give any thought to, although I know a lot of authors that do… I suppose Alexis Bledel as Rory-Gilmore-turned-Sadie-Larcen, if that were possible.

photo images_zpsl4jksi1m.jpeg And Ansel Elgort (Fault in our Stars and Divergent) would be handy to have around for Brady and Brock (identical twins).

Tell us about a scene in your novel, and name a piece of music that would make good background music.

Hmm. This is tough because there are so many twists that I don’t want to give away. If you read the first book, then it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that Sadie and her Nephilim admirer, Xander, revisit an attraction to one another in The Flaming Sword.

Andrew Peterson has a song, "Dancing In The Minefields" that would encapsulate the odds against such an unconventional relationship working out. But I’m not going to say whether or not they take that chance!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

John Grisham’s The Confession . Though I am not against the death penalty, it made me consider how important it is to have conclusive evidence before sentencing someone to death. Circumstantial evidence shouldn’t be enough to send someone to death row. Just today, here in Dallas, a man convicted of double murder in 1987 was freed because of flawed evidence. That’s just tragic.

What are you working on now?

My final book of The Tethered World Chronicles, The Genesis Tree. As always, I’m writing by the seat of my pants and praying my way through the chapters! Writing a book can be similar to reading one when the characters take on a life of their own and surprise their creator. It’s a fun and nail biting endeavor.

Where else can readers find you online?

You can connect with me on my website/blog, Facebook, Pinterest: (Belongs to my main character, Sadie), Character blog: (Sadie’s mom has a blog about legendary creatures.), Twitter, Instagram, Goodreads. There will be a super fun virtual launch party on Facebook with great prizes. We had about 200 partygoers with the release of The Tethered World and had a crazy good time! Join my Facebook group if you’d like to jump in :)

The book can be purchased online via the following button:

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

A friend admitted just last week that she always reads the last chapter of a book first, to see if she likes the ending before she invests in the characters by reading the book (I was shocked!). A related question came up in my creative writing class and I think it’s worth further exploration…Do you prefer stories that have a happy or satisfying ending? Is tragedy or an unresolved ending more appealing to you? More realistic? Does it make you angry if it ends on a cliffhanger?

Thanks, Heather, for telling us about your novel. Readers, Heather has offered to give a free e-copy of her book to the winner of our drawing on Monday, September 12. To enter, leave a comment below in answer to Heather's question, above. "Please enter me" won't get you entered. The drawing is done by email, so leave your email address, like so: trish[at]trishperry[dot]com.

Carrie Stuart Parks and Free Books!

photo 9781401690472_Image_zpskd5gsdzp.jpg Gwen Marcey takes death in stride—until she’s faced with her own mortality.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Guide Me Home, by Kim Vogel Sawyer, is:

kimberlyj503@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's meet novelist Carrie Stuart Parks, author of the mystery/thriller/suspense novel, When Death Draws Near (HarperCollins Christian/Thomas Nelson, August 2016).

photo Carrie on sofa_zpsnhqhjiee.jpg Carrie Stuart Parks is a multiple Christy finalist as well as a Carol and Inspy award-winning author. An internationally known forensic artist, she travels with her husband, Rick, across the US and Canada teaching courses in forensic art to law enforcement professionals. The author/illustrator of numerous books on drawing and painting, Carrie continues to create dramatic, award-winning watercolors from her studio in the mountains of Idaho.

Mentored by New York Times best-selling author, Frank Peretti, Carrie began writing fiction while battling stage II breast cancer. Now in remission, she continues to encourage other women struggling through the effects of cancer.

You have a truly compelling bio, Carrie! Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

—Breeder, owner, handler of Champion show Great Pyrenees dogs. AKC judge.

—Married to a former Visual Information Specialist for the FBI in Washington, D.C.

—I live on the same ranch in the mountains of Idaho where I grew up.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of When Death Draws Near.

photo 9781401690472_Image_zpskd5gsdzp.jpg Forensic artist Gwen Marcey is between jobs when she accepts temporary work in Pikeville, Kentucky—a small town facing big-city crime. But before Gwen can finish her first drawing of the serial rapist who is on the loose, the latest witness vanishes. Just like all the others.

Gwen suspects a connection between the rapist and the “accidental” deaths that are happening around town, but the local sheriff has little interest in her theories. When her digitally-obsessed teenage daughter joins her, Gwen turns her attention to a second assignment: going undercover in a serpent-handling church. She could get a handsome reward for uncovering illegal activity—a reward she desperately needs, as it seems her breast cancer has returned.

But snakes aren’t the only ones ready to kill. Can Gwen uncover the truth—and convince anyone to believe her—before she becomes a victim herself?

In a thrilling race against time, When Death Draws Near plunges us into cold-case murders, shady politics, and a den of venomous suspects.

What is it about Gwen that will make your readers care about her?

Gwen Marcey is a flawed, but likable character struggling with many of the same issues everyone must deal with—finding a steady paycheck, disease, divorce, raising a teen—as well as facing danger in her career.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead role?

photo images_zpsb61lhv92.jpeg I’d love Sandra Bullock to be Gwen.

Speaking of which, what novel would you like to see brought to film?

Frank Peretti’s Illusion . (After a car wreck tragically claims the life of his wife and magic partner, Mandy, Dane Collins finds himself in a quaint coffee shop transfixed by a magician whose illusions even he, a seasoned professional, cannot explain. Even more mysterious is the performer herself. Nineteen-year-old Mandy has never met him, doesn’t know him, is certainly not in love with him, but is in every respect identical to the young beauty he met and married some forty years earlier. They begin a furtive relationship as mentor and protégée, but as Dane tries to figure out who Mandy really is, and she to understand why she is mysteriously drawn to him, she is being watched by those who not only possess all the answers but who also have the power to decide her fate.)

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I loved Twilight at Blueberry Barrens . Colleen Coble knows how to make you love her characters.

What are you working on now?

My next book, Portrait of Vengeance.

Kim Vogel Sawyer and Free Books!

photo 9780307731395_zpseugjfbio.jpeg Can the God who designed miles of underground astonishment shape Devlin’s ambitious plans and free Rebekah from a burden of guilt?

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the e-copy of Where Wildflowers Grow, by Gail Gaymer Martin, is:

pattymh20009@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Kim Vogel Sawyer, author of the historical romance, Guide Me Home (WaterBrook, August 2016).

photo 12243431_1010949135631779_719200947466779994_n_zpsbxdeoyun.jpg In 1966, Kim Vogel Sawyer told her kindergarten teacher that someday people would check out her book in libraries. That little-girl dream came true in 2006 with the release of Waiting for Summer's Return. Since then, Kim has watched God expand her dream beyond her childhood imaginings. With almost 40 titles on library shelves and more than 1.5 million copies of her books in print, she enjoys a full-time writing and speaking ministry.

When she isn't writing, Kim stays active serving in her church's women's and music ministries, traveling with "The Hubs," and spoiling her quiverful of granddarlings.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

—In my 55 years of life, I have never been without a cat for a pet.

—I AM a natural blonde. I was a blonde until I started having children, which turned my hair dark. So I’ve literally gone back to my “roots.”

—When I need to “loosen up” my muscles after hours of writing, I hula-hoop.

I can't even picture you brunette, Kim.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Guide Me Home.

photo 9780307731395_zpseugjfbio.jpeg After tragedy leaves its mark on Rebekah Hardin’s family, she plans to help her parents and six siblings honor her beloved brother’s memory and alleviate their poverty by working as a guide in the dangerous cave system. Kentucky’s renowned Mammoth Cave presents profitable opportunities for hardworking, capable men. But Rebekah is determined and if it means presenting herself as a himself, then she’s up to the job.

Under the wing of experienced guide Tolly Sanford, “Reb” begins to learn the complexities of the cave and the two are joined by an aspiring young cartographer, Devlin Bale.

The university student has traveled to the hill country to map tunnels—not to fall for a girl in disguise. Can the God who designed miles of underground astonishment shape Devlin’s ambitious plans and free Reb from the weight from the past?

What is it about Rebekah that will make your readers care about her?

Rebekah is so dedicated to her family. She loves her siblings and wants the best for them. She respects her parents. She has an innately good heart, which made me fall in love with her.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo sadie-robertson-two-engagements-in-family-moh-video_zpszrjzg3qi.jpg I think I’d like to see Sadie Robertson play Rebekah, and I’d work really hard to cast my nephew, Nathan Vogel, as Devlin because he looks like the character and he’s a good actor.

Speaking of which, what novel would you like to see brought to film?

I would be over-the-moon happy if my 2009 release, My Heart Remembers , became a movie.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

My Lit & Latte group (book club group from church) recently read Mother of Pearl by Kellie Coates Gilbert. It isn’t a new release, but it won us over. The mother was so believable and her journey was emotionally gripping. Good characters draw me in every time, and Kellie did really well.

What are you working on now?

I am hard at work at my fall 2017 release which is a three generational women’s fiction story set half in contemporary time and half in the past so readers can follow the life circumstances that colored Hazel’s view of the world and her relationship with her daughter and granddaughter.

Gail Gaymer Martin, New Releases, and Free Books!

photo Where Wildflowers Grow - final_zpsupjq5bbm.jpg Sandy Fisher returns to her hometown to help her ailing widowed mother and to heal from her job loss and her broken engagement, but when she meets Clay Burdett, the only mechanic in town, she is focused on winning her battles with Clay until she learns that each seeks something deeper and more meaningful than their past choices, and yet it takes much to soften their hearts in the same way that sand softens clay.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of A Family for the Rancher, by Louise Gouge, is:

And now let's revisit with novelist Gail Gaymer Martin, author of the contemporary romance, Where Wildflowers Grow (Winged Publications, June 2016).

photo LR Gail - 2 2015_zpsjjy9auk7.jpg Multi-award-winning novelist Gail Gaymer Martin is the author of Christian contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and women’s fiction with 65 published novels and over four million books sold. CBS local news listed Gail as one of the four best writers in the Detroit area.

Her books have received numerous awards, including: ACFW Carol Award, Romantic Times Reviewer Choice, Booksellers Best, National Readers Choice, Holt Medallion, Award of Excellence.

Gail is a founder and member of American Christian Fiction Writers and served as an executive board member until September 2015. She is a member of Advanced Speakers and Writers, and Christian Authors Network. Gail is a keynote speaker at churches, civic and business organizations and presents workshops at conferences across the country.

Gail was a lifetime resident of Michigan until this September, when she is moving to Sedona, Arizona.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I had the opportunity to present workshops at a Christian Writing Conference in London, England.

-- The famous English pub cider, Gaymer Pub Cyder, a business since the 1700s, was begun by John Gaymer is a direct descendant of my family.

-- While on tour with the Detroit Lutheran Singers, I had the amazing experience of singing at churches and town halls in many cities in Germany.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Where Wildflowers Grow.

photo Where Wildflowers Grow - final_zpsupjq5bbm.jpg Where Wildflowers Grow has been a book of my heart for many years. The plot did not work for category romance, my major publisher, so it remained unpublished until recently.

The story is built around the analogy of the properties of clay and sand, thus the main characters’ names, Sandy Fisher and Clay Burdett.

The story line follows:

Falling in love can be wonderful, but for Sandy Fisher and Clay Burdett it is more like a steep mountain climb. Sandy returns to her hometown concerned about her widowed mother’s health and to heal from her job loss and her broken engagement. Though discouraged, her attitude and determination never falter, and when her car acts up and the only mechanic in town gives her the runaround, she’s determined to win the battle.

Clay, scarred by his childhood, left his promising career and moved into the small town to bury emotions and guilt involving the death of his wife. But life continues to be empty, and when he meet’s spunky Sandy who challenges him and awakens his spirit, he faces his wasted life unless he conquers his past.

Like opposite poles, Sandy and Clay are drawn together, seeking something deeper and more meaningful than their past choices. Yet they continue to doubt until truth softens their hearts as sand softens clay.

What are you working on now?

My novel, A Trip To Remember, part of the Get Your Kiss on Route 66 series, was a joy to write, and since the heroine and her sister had been at odds for years and the heroine’s attempt to visit her in California went foal when her car broke down in Tucumcari, New Mexico, I thought that a connected novel based on her sister would be fun to write and enjoyable for the readers, so I have just completed the second book, A Tucumcari Christmas. I enjoyed writing the book and I was pleased so many readers of the first book are anxious to read the second.

Contemporary Romance:

Louise Gouge and Free Books!

photo AFamilyfortheRancherCover_zpsbvdbpxfz.jpg He never planned to marry…until the beautiful widow at the nearby ranch got into his head…and his heart.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the free e-copy of A Love to Treasure, by Kimberly Rose Johnson, is:

amyputney89@...

Congratulations! We'll get your e-book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Louise Gouge, author of the historical romance, A Family for the Rancher (Harlequin’s Love Inspired Historical, August 2016).

Florida author Louise M. Gouge writes historical fiction for Harlequin's Love Inspired Historical Romances. She received the prestigious Inspirational Readers’ Choice Award in 2005 and placed in 2011, 2015, and 2016; and placed in the Laurel Wreath in 2012.

When she isn't writing, she and David, her husband of fifty years, enjoy visiting historical sites and museums.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I have lived in Florida for many years, and yet I don’t care for going to the beach. Fifteen minutes in the sun gives me two days of sunburned misery.

-- I miss watching the Space Shuttle take off and hearing the sonic boom when it was coming in for a landing. We could see the launches from our house, and several times I went to the Space Coast to watch up close. Such an exciting experience. Wish they’d bring the United States space program back!

-- My favorite treat is having a pedicure. Well, that and eating popcorn. Not that they go together. LOL!

Re the Space Shuttle, I remember the Concorde flying overhead before it was discontinued. I miss the experience, so I can imagine how exciting the Shuttle would have been.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of A Family for the Rancher.

photo AFamilyfortheRancherCover_zpsbvdbpxfz.jpg From Neighbor to Daddy

Rancher Edmund McKay likes his life simple and quiet—everything feisty neighbor Lula May Barlow is not! But with a cattle rustler on the loose, he’s duty-bound to protect the widowed mother, even without her approval. Yet he never expected to enjoy her company. And he certainly never thought her crowded, bustling house would be the first place he’d ever feel at home…

After a harsh childhood, Lula May knows how to stand on her own two feet. She doesn’t need Edmund’s help—but she’s starting to want it, all the same. So are her children, who clearly have matchmaking in mind. And when a threat from the past resurfaces, she realizes all that’s at stake…including her chance for a lifetime of love.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Both my hero and heroine have endured hard knock lives, but they work hard and never give up. They also haven’t let their own misfortunes cause them to be bitter. They love their neighbors and are eager to help anyone in need.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zpskkqnpth3.jpeg Chris Hemsworth would make a perfect Edmund McKay,

photo images-1_zps1ouyjw3t.jpeg and Amy Adams is the very picture of Lula May Barlow.

Speaking of which, what novel would you like to see brought to film?

Any of the pirate novels by MaryLu Tyndall would make a terrific movie. I loved pirate movies when I was growing up, but we don’t see them today.

Agreed!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Laurie Alice Eakes’s The Mountain Midwife . Eakes is one of my favorite authors of both contemporary and historical romance.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on Cowboy Homecoming, the fifth book in my Four Stones Ranch Love Inspired Historical.

Kimberly Rose Johnson and Free Books!

photo A Love to Treasure Cover bk1_zpsavyxtcnf.jpg A young woman finds more than she expected when she follows the clues for a scavenger hunt in a Central Oregon resort community.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Journey's End, by Renee Ryan, is:

estack2003@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Kimberly Rose Johnson, author of the sweet romance, A Love to Treasure (Mountain Brook Ink, July 2016).

Kimberly Rose Johnson married her college sweetheart and lives in the Pacific Northwest. From a young child Kimberly has been an avid reader. That love of reading fostered a creative mind and led to her passion for writing.

She especially loves romance and writes contemporary romance that warms the heart and feeds the soul.

Kimberly holds a degree in Behavioral Science from Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I have a short attention span, so I prefer to read books that are shorter rather than longer.

-- I can’t eat gluten.

-- I did not dream of being a writer when I was young. Writing became a passion when I was in my thirties and grew out of my love for reading.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of A Love to Treasure.

photo A Love to Treasure Cover bk1_zpsavyxtcnf.jpg Here is the back cover copy.

School teacher Nicole Davis is on summer break, but this vacation is unlike any other. Her beloved Grandmother’s final wish has landed Nicole smack in the middle of her favorite destination—Sunriver, Oregon, following Grams’s clues on a mysterious scavenger hunt.

Unexpectedly, Nicole finds more than just a fellow sleuth in a handsome police officer, Mark Stone. But Mark must return to his job in Portland at summer’s end, and Nicole must guard her heart.

Mark is hoping for a quiet summer in Sunriver as he contemplates his future in law enforcement, but a string of burglaries draws him from his self-imposed break from detective work and thrusts him into the middle of the investigation. To complicate matters, Nicole is in jeopardy, and he knows his growing feelings for her could cloud his judgment.

Will their differing career goals be the end of their summer romance—or just the beginning of forever after?

What is it about Nicole and Mark that will make your readers care about them?

Nicole has a big heart and is the kind of person you’d enjoying visiting with over a cup of coffee. Mark is serious about his job as a cop, but he knows how to have fun and has a nice sense of humor.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zps4vfgzhks.jpeg I looked up 20 something actresses and think Anna Sophia Robb could play Nicole.

photo images-1_zpsal5f9mcc.jpeg Jack Reynor could play Mark.

Whom do you consider a fascinating fictional character?

This question really stumped me so I asked my son to toss out character ideas and he suggested Mary Poppins and I must say, she truly does fascinate me. I think it’s the mystery that surrounds her and how she is so serious yet super fun too.

I enjoyed Saving Mr. Banks , the semi-recent movie with Tom Hanks that gave a biography of sorts about how that story came to be. She’s one of my favorite Disney characters too! This past year I had the opportunity see Mary Poppins stroll by me while I was eating lunch in Disneyland.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’m currently reading Silent Sabotage by Susan Sleeman. If you enjoy romantic suspense I absolutely recommend it. It’s a Love Inspired Suspense so it’s not overly long too, which I consider a bonus. :) The plot moves right along and the characters are well written. Finally she really fooled me. I had no idea who the bad guy was until the last minute—I normally figure that out sooner.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing the last book in the Sunriver Dreams Series, Designing Love.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

The setting of A Love to Treasure is special to Nicole. Is there someplace that holds a special memory for you, or a place you especially enjoy visiting? I'd love to hear about it.

Renee Ryan and Free Books!

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Walking on Sea Glass, by Julie Carobini, is:

may_dayzee@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Renee Ryan, author of the historical (Gilded Age) romance, Journey’s End (Amazon’s Waterfall Press, March 2016).

photo Renee Promo Photo_zps2pqiur1e.jpg Renee Ryan is the author of eighteen inspirational, faith-based romance novels. She received the Daphne Du Maurier Award for Excellence in Mystery/Suspense, Inspirational Romantic division, for her novels Dangerous Allies and Courting the Enemy. She currently serves as the Secretary for Romance Writers of America national Board of Directors.

Ryan currently lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with her husband and one large, fluffy cat many have mistaken for a small bear.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- My only C in college was on an assignment in my creative writing course. I very quickly learned I am not gifted at writing to other people’s vision.

-- I’ve gone sky-diving three times, which was two times too many!

-- I had dinner with Oprah.

I imagine intriguing stories behind all three of those items!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Journey's End.

photo Ryan-JourneysEnd-official cover art_zpskdjb34ew.jpg Having grown up on the mean streets of nineteenth-century London, Caroline St. James is used to fighting to survive. So when her beloved mother—abandoned and ignored by her wealthy family—suddenly dies, the scrappy twenty-two-year-old devises a plan to right this terrible wrong.

With nothing to lose, she sails to New York to find the man who turned a cold shoulder to her mother’s suffering: Caroline’s grandfather. To settle the family score, Caroline infiltrates her grandfather’s privileged world, hoping to sabotage his business from the inside.

As she sets her plot in motion, she meets Jackson Montgomery, a virtuous man who is struggling to recover from a family scandal of his own. As their friendship grows, and Caroline begins to piece together the motives that led to her mother’s ruin, she is forced to decide: Should she risk everything in the name of justice? Or can she let love and forgiveness guide her instead?

What is it about Caroline St. James that will make your readers care about her?

Used to taking care of herself Caroline is strong and independent, but she doesn’t realize how lonely she’s become. She can’t help befriending others weaker than herself, especially innocents who need her protection. She has a heart for justice and boldly rights terrible wrongs. Although her motive at the opening of the book is to seek revenge on the man who she thinks ruined her mother, when Caroline realizes her anger is misplaced she quickly embraces the very person she’s come to harm.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Teri-Hatcher-16_zpsq7jk4c8e.jpg The closest would be Terry Hatcher

photo images_zps19la5jtp.jpeg and Dean Cain from their Superman days together.

If you’d like to share the opening line or lines to your novel, we’d love to read them.

Ellis Island, 1901 “Oh, Caro, look. We’re almost there. We’re almost in America.”

Caroline St. James made a noncommittal sound deep in her throat. Unlike the frail Irish girl leaning heavily on her arm, she knew arriving at Ellis Island was only the first step in the rigorous registration process. Frowning at Mary’s sickly pallor, Caroline carefully guided her friend into the queue of fellow immigrants disembarking the ferryboat. Cautious by nature, honed by necessity, she watched for trouble, breaking down potential threats apparent in the mass of anxious humanity pressing in from every possible angle.

It would be too easy to lose her friend in this crowd. Where would Mary be then? The girl was already showing signs of exhaustion and they hadn’t even made it off the ferryboat yet. Almost there…

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Unleashing Mr. Darcy , by Teri Wilson is a fun retelling of a classic. If you love dogs and want a modern take on an old favorite, this is the book for you.

What are you working on now?

The next book in the Gilded Promises series, A Touch of Scarlet.

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winners of the signed copy of Better Than Chocolate, by Debby Mayne and myself, are:

debbiewilder@... and susanmsj@...

and the winner of the signed copy of Almost Like Being in Love, by Beth Vogt, is

colorvibrant@...

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail addresses, and we'll get your books right out to you.

I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit with novelist Julie Carobini, author of the contemporary Inspirational romance, Walking on Sea Glass (Book 1, Sea Glass Inn Novels) (May 2016).

Julie Carobini is the bestselling author of The Christmas Thief, the Chocolate Series, and the Otter Bay Novels: Sweet Waters, A Shore Thing, and Fade to Blue. She has won numerous awards, and RT Book Reviews says, "Carobini has a talent for creating characters that come alive."

Julie lives in California with her family and loves all things coastal (except sharks).

Please sign up for her occasional newsletter, where you'll learn about new releases and freebies for your e-reader, at her website (below).

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- Used to be a secret shopper for Taco Bell.

-- For three years I ghostwrote articles for executives in the banking and marketing industries.

-- Survived a serious illness when I was in my early 20s (Liddy in Walking on Sea Glass is loosely based on that experience).

Wow, that's great that you were able to use your experience to create your novel, Julie. Nothing like being able to identify fully with your character's plight!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Walking on Sea Glass.

Suddenly single, Liddy flees the desert to work at an up-and-coming seaside resort with her best friend. The breezy backdrop of an inn by the sea offers Liddy the dream of starting fresh, but soon she is shocked to discover another setback brewing in her life. Despite the battle that lies ahead, she finds herself drawn to Beau Quinn, a captivating widower with a wounded heart of his own.

As Beau and Liddy’s burgeoning relationship attempts to survive, will Liddy have the courage to trust a man again—especially one as emotionally fragile as Beau? Can Beau commit to a woman facing a challenging recovery? And what is going on behind the scenes at Sea Glass Inn, where late night deliveries and secret meetings are spoken about in whispers?

Set in a California seaside town, Walking on Sea Glass weaves a romantic story of courage, faith, and the power of true love.

Kathryn Cushman, author of Fading Starlight calls Walking on Sea Glass "Poignant ...”

What is it about Liddy that will make your readers care about her?

Liddy doesn’t give up easy. And Beau, after facing a difficult loss, is understandably cautious. I’ve had several readers tell me how much they were rooting for the both of them.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

No idea! I’ve attached a photo (credit: shutterstock) that appears on the back cover of my book. When I saw it, I thought, that’s Liddy and Beau!

Works for me!

Whom do you consider a fascinating fictional character?

Mary Lennox, the young heroine of The Secret Garden . Mary “grew” extensively in the story, moving from a petulant, spoiled young girl to a curious and, eventually, loving person. So love reading her again and again.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Come Rain or Come Shine by Jan Karon. This book is the culmination of so many years of loving the Mitford characters and I thought Jan did a beautiful job of tying pieces together. I didn’t want it to end.

What are you working on now?

Runaway Tide, Book 2 of the Sea Glass Inn Novels.

Where else can readers find you online?

www.juliecarobini.com or my Facebook page.

The book can be purchased online via the following buttons:

Beth Vogt, July Releases, and Free Books!

photo 9781476789804_zpsabyxhojq.jpg She’s won an all-expense paid, luxurious, dream wedding—all she needs now is the groom!

Before we revisit with today's featured author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Heather Blanton's A Promise in Defiance is:

lattebookks@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you for your snail-mail address, and we'll get your book right out to you.

And now let's visit with novelist Beth Vogt, author of the contemporary romance, Almost Like Being in Love (Howard Books, June, 2016).

photo Beth s Portraits-Portraits-0153_zpsc5ca3aal.jpeg Beth K. Vogt believes God’s best often waits behind the doors marked “Never.” As a contemporary romance novelist for Howard Books, Beth is a 2016 Christy finalist, and she was also a 2015 RITA® Finalist, and a 2014 and 2015 Carol Award finalist. Her 2014 novel, Somebody Like You, was one of Publisher’s Weekly’s Best Books of 2014.

In 2015, Beth introduced her destination wedding series with an e-novella, Can’t Buy Me Love, and a novel, Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Her e-novella, A November Bride, was part of the Year of Wedding Series by Zondervan.

Beth enjoys writing contemporary romance because she believes there’s more to happily-ever-after than the fairy tales tell us. She lives in Colorado with her husband Rob, who has adjusted to discussing the lives of imaginary people, and their youngest daughter, Christa, who loves to play volleyball and enjoys writing her own stories.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I love hummingbirds because they remind me of God’s love – and yes, there is a story there.

-- Because of an illness I had in 2007, I am a gluten-free gal. Thankfully, GF options have improved greatly since then.

-- My son Josh is also a published author (3 novels so far) and editor at Paizo Press, so ink flows through our family veins.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Almost Like Being in Love.

photo 9781476789804_zpsabyxhojq.jpg Winning a destination wedding would be a dream come true … if Caron Hollister and her boyfriend were engaged. How is she supposed to break the news that she’s won their dream wedding when he hasn’t even proposed? Sure, everyone says they’re perfect for each other. And he’s likely to pop the question any minute. But will it really work if he can’t even see why she likes the idea of a destination wedding?

Realtor Kade Webster has put his past heartbreak with Caron behind him. His thriving real estate company keeps him busy and now he’s secured a big win with the Colorado Tour of Homes. Then his home stager cancels, leaving him in the lurch … just as Caron shows up in his life once again. She can help him with the Tour as long as they keep things purely professional.

Spending time helping Kade while she should be planning her dream destination wedding has Caron in knots. They broke up for good reasons, yet she’s still embarrassingly attracted to him, even if he sometimes drives her crazy. How can she be feeling such things with one man when she’s imagining a wedding with another man? Can she say “I do” to one man when she’s wondering “What if” about another?

What is it about Caron Hollister that will make your readers care about her?

Caron Hollister wants a virtual stamp of approval, which is something I think we all search for. We’re just looking for approval from different people. Andy Stanley, the senior pastor of North Point Community Church, said it this way: “All of us are using someone or something else as a mirror.”

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zpsv5vdwunh.jpeg I would cast January Jones from Mad Men in the role of Caron Hollister

and John Newton from the holiday movie The Christmas Card in the role of Kade Webster. If you haven’t seen The Christmas Card, you should – it’s one of my favorite Christmas movies.

Whom do you consider a fascinating fictional character?

I love L. M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series. “Anne with an ‘e’” is a delightful character with so much personality, pluck, and imagination. And I love the fact that we get to see Anne grow up and mature, but in her heart, she’s still the same: someone who loves deeply and lives life to the fullest.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I read One Enchanted Christmas , an e-novella by Melissa Tagg, and thoroughly enjoyed it from page one all the way to the end. Melissa is a writing buddy of mine and also a good friend. I know her writing journey and yes, I’m a fan of all her books. In One Enchanted Christmas you can tell that Melissa had a lot of fun writing this story – it’s a delightful romance that you can read any time of year.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on another story with twin element to it – that intrigues me because I have a fraternal twin sister.

Heather Blanton and Free Books!

photo promise_ebook_zpshlwnvpsa.jpg Choices have consequences … even for the redeemed.

Today we're featuring novelist Heather Blanton, author of the Inspirational Western Romance, A Promise in Defiance (Romance in the Rockies, Book 3) (Rivulet Publishing, June 2016).

Heather Blanton is the independent bestselling author of several Christian Westerns, including the Romance in the Rockies series, which has sold over 40,000 copies.

Intrigued by the concept of three good sisters stranded in a lawless mining town, a few notable Hollywood producers have requested the script for her first book in that series, A Lady in Defiance.

Heather's writing is gritty and realistic. In fact, her books have been compared to AMC's Hell on Wheels series, as well as the legendary Francine Rivers book, Redeeming Love.

A former journalist, Heather is an avid researcher and skillfully weaves truth in among the fictional story lines. She also loves exploring the American West. She has walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in her hand.

She lives on a farm with her three boys just outside Raleigh, North Carolina.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I breed Long Hair German Shepherds.

--In high school I wrote a story about a girl who stole a camel and rode away from an army fort to find her missing soldier. (The US Army at one point experimented with camels in the Southwest—so there was a reason for the absurdity.)

--I am the repository of an embarrassing amount of Star Trek trivia. Star Trek, the first and best generation.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of A Promise in Defiance.

Logan Tillane carries a Bible in his hand, wears a gun on his hip, and fights for lost souls any way he can. Newly arrived in Defiance, though, he has trouble telling saints from sinners. The challenge only worsens when infamous madam Delilah Goodnight steps off the stage. She and the new preacher have opposite plans for the town. One wants to save it, one wants to lead it straight to hell.

Town founder Charles McIntyre has a new wife … and a ten-year-old half-breed son dropped on his doorstep. In a town as mean as Defiance, can he dare to love them both? If he tries, will the price be too high, even for him?

They can both count on one thing: whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap ... and the harvest is at hand...

What is it about Logan that will make your readers care about him?

Logan has done a lot of bad things: he’s killed men, beaten women, spent too much time drinkin’ and pickin’ fights. But the Lord changed him and Logan believes he can now help people who are as lost as he once was. He’s a portrait of a man who wants to let his past make him better, not bitter or defeated. In the face of adversity, though, he struggles with doing things his way vs. God’s way. He’s an easy guy to be around because he’s humble and authentic. Authentic in that he’s truly repentant for hurting someone very special to him.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

If you were contracted to write a novel based on your life, what title would you give it?

Never Give in, Never Back Down, Never Lose Faith

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I am just finishing The Poachers Daughter [image error] by Michael Zimmer. Zimmer is a real Western writer in that he knows the subject because he’s lived the life. He is an in depth researcher and has a passion for his stories. This tale is a bit of a twist on the Western—the protagonist is female, but there are still horses, gunfights, a little romance, and a poignant hat-tip to the disappearing West of the late 1800’s.

What are you working on now?

I have a WW 2 novella I am contributing to a collection from Rivulet Publishing and a mail order bride story that will go into a collection with several authors, chiefly Susette Williams. Both will be out in the fall.

Also, I wrote a script for my first book, A Lady in Defiance and it has been perused by some producers in Hollywood like Brian Bird and Mark Headly. Fortunately, the script has garnered some serious interest so now I am trying to decide if I want to accept an offer to be represented and let the agent shop it around, or if I want to work with a professional screen writer and we’ll sell it ourselves. I’m still praying about my next move here.

Very exciting!
