The New Year, Devotions, and Free Books!

photo COVER_Final_BadHair_zps026d2e65.jpg Nothing starts a day better than spending a few moments with God and a devotion -- and I'd like to help with that.
 photo GraceDecaf16f_FINAL_zps3305c1ac.jpg

Before I elaborate, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman, by Carole Brown, is:

susanmsj@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you today to get your mailing address, and we'll get your book to you right away. I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

Remember to enter your email address when you comment, as described in today's drawing information, below. If you win the drawing but haven't left your email address, I can't contact you!

Now, with regard to those morning devotions, I'd like to start the New Year off by sending a signed copy of one of my devotionals to two of my readers.

Working on these two books -- Delight Yourself in the Lord...Even on Bad Hair Days and His Grace is Sufficient...Decaf is NOT --  was such a blessing. Writing a devotion requires quite a bit of time with the Lord, and the experience is absolutely uplifting. I hope to work on another one someday, especially if it means working again with big-hearted, funny authors like Kristin Billerbeck, Sandra Bricker, Loree Lough, Debby Mayne, Cynthia Ruchti, and the late, lovely Diann Hunt.

Here's a quick description of each of the books.

photo COVER_Final_BadHair_zps026d2e65.jpg "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4) Probably the most quoted promise in the Bible, this one passage of scripture inspires hope, sustains faith, and oozes with joy.

Whether single or married, career girl or stay-at-home mom, today's Christian woman is faced with daily obstacles. Delight Yourself in the Lord...Even on Bad Hair Days is a devotional filled with upbeat reminders about infusing hope and joy in the Lord as the first step toward conquering life's problems and chasing down the desires of your heart. Through 100 funny and thought-provoking devotions, the authors remind women to go back to the basics with God. And we even share a few private "bad hair confessions" along the way!

 photo GraceDecaf16f_FINAL_zps3305c1ac.jpg
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). With this single promise, God's grace does what nothing else can. Grace enables us to do the impossible. When we don't have the ability, the resources, or even the drive to accomplish God's will for our lives, His grace is there. And when our feet slip or we've chosen the wrong path, His grace is a heartbeat away to dust us off and show us the way home, no questions asked.

Complete pardon? Clemency? Unearned favor? Oh, come on. What's the catch? Can it really be that, as we navigate the high-wire act of our busy lives, God's grace forms a quiet safety net beneath us? Each one of us has lived with imperfect (perhaps very conditional) love, and the concept of God's perfect love often seems unfathomable by comparison. But all those things we hope will justify or fortify us in some way--good works, career or family focus, even chocolate or caffeine!--contribute nothing long-lasting. They're just momentary, while the supply of God's grace never runs dry.

So does that mean when you step into line to order your next double espresso, we would suggest that you make it a decaf? Absolutely not! But we're here to show you...to gently remind you...that there is nothing else that offers the high-octane surge of His full-on grace.

If you would like to be entered in the drawing for one of these devotionals, leave your answer to the question I'm asking each of my January authors in the comments section below:

What is the one improvement you'd like to make in your life in 2014?

Personally, I'd like to strengthen the habit of asking people about themselves. Too often, when someone asks me about myself, I answer them without considering that they might have something to talk about, as well! When I look back on such conversations, I realize how self-centered I can be.

How about you? Leave your answer in the comments section below, and next week I'll draw two names and mail out a copy of each devotional.

And if you're interested, both books can be purchased in fine book stores and online via the following buttons:

Anita Higman, New Releases, and Free Books!

photo AMarriageinMiddleburyCover_zpsfb2169be.jpg While she's been faithfully caring for her tearoom customers, Charlotte has also been quietly turning into an old maid. Will the next marriage in Middlebury be for her?

Today we're visiting with novelist Anita Higman, author of A Marriage in Middlebury (Abingdon Press, November 2013). photo 5007crop_zps30399c32.jpg

Best-selling and award-winning author, Anita Higman, has thirty-seven books published in various genres, but her greatest love is inspirational romance and women’s fiction. She’s been a Barnes & Noble “Author of the Month” for Houston and has a BA in the combined fields of speech communication, psychology, and art.

Anita loves good movies, exotic teas, and brunch with her gal friends.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

- I love tearooms and all things tea. One of my favorite teas is blackberry sage. Oh, and I love Earl Grey.

- When I was a kid growing up on our farm in Oklahoma I had a pet snake named Herbie.

- Autumn is my favorite time of year. It’s crisp and earth-fragrant and wistful.

As I sit here, watching an icky, wet snow cover everything outside my window, I'm inclined to agree with your assessment of autumn, Anita. Give me that fall crispness or the clarity of spring any day!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Marriage in Middlebury.

photo AMarriageinMiddleburyCover_zpsfb2169be.jpg Charlotte Rose Hill, who loves serving up country delicacies and uniquely blended teas, discovers that while she's been faithfully caring for her tearoom customers, she'd also been quietly turning into an old maid. Charlotte did fall in love with a young man, Sam Wilder, when she was 18, but his family forced her to walk away from their relationship.

Now, more than a decade later, Charlotte finds that she still has feelings for her first love.

Initially thrilled to learn that Sam has come home to Middlebury, Texas, Charlotte is then devastated to learn that he's brought someone with him: his fiancée. But all is not lost when one of the loveable but meddlesome townsfolk decides to get involved. Will the next marriage in Middlebury be for Sam and Charlotte?

Why will readers care about Charlotte?

Charlotte Rose Hill is like a best friend. She is big-hearted with everyone she meets, but because of a great injustice she has been denied the one thing she’s always dreamed of. I’m hoping you’ll be rooting for her to fulfill her longing in spite of all the obstacles.

Readers, I had the pleasure of reading and endorsing this book for Anita. I thought you might like to read my comments:

Nothing makes for a better romance novel than second chances, misunderstandings, and tension-filled bad timing, and that's exactly what tearoom owner Charlotte Rose Hill experiences in Anita Higman's lovely new novel, A Marriage in Middlebury. When Charlotte's old beau returns to the quaint town, fiancee in tow, you'd think the old sparks would be snuffed out. Think again. Higman has created an ensemble of characters both romantic and quirky, and the greatest pleasure in reading the book is that all of their stories matter.

Anita, if you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo leoni_zps2771fbae.jpg The heroine, Charlotte, could be played by Téa Leoni

photo Unknown_zpsc5e72883.jpeg and the hero, Sam Wilder, could be played by Jude Law.

What is the one improvement you’d like to make in your life in 2014?

I’d like to be a better witness for Christ, and I’d like to know more clearly the books He wants me to write.

Oh, yes. Give us that guidance, Lord! I wish it was easier to determine.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I read Jane Eyre , and truly loved it. I would highly recommend it because it’s exquisitely written and deeply inspiring.

What are you working on now?

Right now I’m taking a brief break, working on promoting the novels that are already out there.

Where else can readers find you online?

Please visit my website at www.anitahigman.com or my Facebook Reader's Page.

The book can be purchased in fine book stores and online via the following buttons:

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

If you could choose any profession for a heroine, what would it be?

Thanks, Anita, for visiting with us and telling us about your novel. Readers, Anita has offered to give a signed copy of her book to the winner of our drawing on Thursday, January 9. To enter, leave a comment below in answer to Anita's question, above. "Please enter me" won't get you entered. Leave your email address, in case you win, like so: trish[at]trishperry[dot]com.

New to Goodreads!

All right, I'm behind the times. But while surfing on my various reading/writing-related sites this morning, I realized I could feed my blog about Inspiration fiction to my Goodreads account!

So from now on, my posts -- normally featured at my site, www.trishperry.com -- will also show up here.

I typically highlight two authors and their current releases each week. The authors share information about their novels and themselves, and they give away a signed copy of their book the following week.

Readers enter the drawing two ways (and you're free to enter in both fashions):

1. Subscribe to my blog (sign up on my site)
2. Answer the question asked by the featured author

I hope you'll stop by, interact, and count on me to introduce new fiction that you'll enjoy.

Blessings,

Trish

Carole Brown and Free Books!

photo TheRedemptionofCaralynneHayman_zps1e4c31e1.jpg How far would you go to avenge the murder of a beloved daughter?

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Always in My Heart, by Mary Ellis, is:

rejordan79@ . . .

and the winner of the signed copy of Snow on the Tulips, by Liz Tolsma, is:

purplefreak13@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you both today to get your mailing addresses, and we'll get your books to you right away. I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

Now let's visit with novelist Carole Brown, author of The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman (Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, September 2013).

photo carole180_zpsa5a5dd24.jpg Carole Brown lives in Southeast Ohio and is always on the lookout for catchy titles and suspenseful plots. The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman, her debut inspirational novel, was a ACFW Genesis semi-finalist. She has also written five children’s books, including Racy, the Rabbit, dealing with character traits, and won two awards for her poems.

Carole has written her whole life as newspaper reporter, editor of journals and newsletters, and research manuscripts. When not penning her own novels, she enjoys mentoring beginning writers and founded a writer’s group called Circle of Pens where she can mentor to her heart’s content. Her passion for serving continues in her secretarial work and as coordinator for the state of Ohio with ACFW.

She and her husband have traveled extensively throughout the United States ministering and counseling. They have particularly enjoyed the western states, where they’ve labored with the Native Americans, and many other specific places where she gathers fodder for her writings. They continue to enjoy traveling, their grandsons, the country life and city lights, gardens, and good food.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I’ve played three different instruments in my life: a clarinet, a guitar, and a piano.

-- I love the southwest where we’ve worked with the American Indians: learning how to make fry bread, shucking corn with the witch doctor’s wife out in a field, visiting hogans, and panning for gold.

-- I never thought I’d get to be a grandmother: now in one year’s time I gained three grand boys: the light of our eyes!

What a wonderful development for you, Carole! Congrats on the growing family.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman.

photo TheRedemptionofCaralynneHayman_zps1e4c31e1.jpg Caralynne Hayman is angry and bitter over the abuse and death of her eleven-year-old daughter from the hands of her religious group, The Children of Righteous Cain. When her husband suffers a sudden heart attack, she does nothing to help him. In her eyes someone needs to pay, and if that means all of the men in the group, then so be it.

Dayne MacFarland is sent away to college by the senior elder of the group to learn ministry. When he returns after finding salvation, determined to bring the truth to the people he’s known all his life, he rediscovers Cara and realizes the love he once felt for her is still deeply embedded within his heart.

Dayne faces men unwilling to turn their backs on the cult training he despises. Cara faces men who follow their leader in abuse toward their wives and the young girls of the group. Cara is considered rebellious and inappropriate to befriend. Dayne is the apple of Elder Simmons’ eye—until he takes a stand against their teachings.

Can Cara overcome the feelings that have governed her most of her life? Can she learn to trust Dayne, and most of all a God whom she sees as uncaring—if he’s really there at all? Only his prayers and love can reach Cara and show her the way to redemption. Will Cara recognize and accept God’s love and forgiveness before she goes too far?

What is it about Cara that will make your readers care about her?

In spite of the anger and bitterness Cara portrays, she has a tender and loving heart for her two remaining daughters, for the other women of the group, and for Dayne. She is scared and troubled, bitter and angry but determined to carry her plans through.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

Well, it’s always hard for me to do this because I have such a rigid image of my characters in my mind. Still, I’ll give it a shot:

photo images-1_zps3170fd79.jpeg Dayne MacFarland: Harrison Ford.

photo images_zps7f8c6e99.jpeg Caralynne Hayman: perhaps Meg Ryan.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Hummingbird by David Stearman. The characters and plot were unique, interesting, and fun. The setting, Mexico, was especially attractive. The author is a great writer and talented musician, and I look forward to reading more of his work.

What are you working on now?

I work on more than one novel at a time. Right now, I’m working on a novel set in a time period I’ve never written before, the late 1800’s. It’s a light suspense and a fun novel with a feisty heroine and some unique characters. I love bringing into my stories connections between characters that began years before and for various reasons, they are thrown together again, and that’s what happens in this one. The more unique and suspenseful the better!

I’m also working on two second books in a couple different series. One takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio during WWII and involves espionage and lots of romance. The other takes place in Montana, involves wildlife, a psychopath, an inexperienced detective determined to find her older brother’s murderer, and a mouse who helps solve the current case. It could be called a whimsical suspense.

Liz Tolsma and Free Books!

photo SnowNEW_zps0f6b1597.jpg A stranger's life hangs in the balance, but to save him is to risk everything.

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Carolina Gold, by Dorothy Love, is:

kristiedonelson@ . .

Now let's visit with novelist Liz Tolsma, author of Snow on the Tulips (Thomas Nelson, August 2013).

photo IMG_5947-5x7-sm_zps193ac040.jpg Liz Tolsma has lived in Wisconsin most of her life, and she now resides next to a farm field with her husband, their son, and their two daughters. All of their children have been adopted internationally and one has special needs.

Her novella, Under His Wings, appeared in the New York Times bestselling collection, A Log Cabin Christmas. Her debut novel, Snow on the Tulips, released in August of 2013.

When not busy putting words to paper, she enjoys reading, walking, working in her large perennial garden, kayaking, and camping with her family.

Please tell us some random fact we might not know about you.

-- I got to pet a penguin at Sea World.

Why will readers care about Cornelia?

I think readers will connect with Cornelia because they can identify with her fear. At one time or another in our lives, all of us have been afraid. How could we gather the courage to do what we knew was right even though the cost might be high?

Tell us a bit more about Snow on the Tulips.

In the twilight of the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands, the Germans have taken everything Cornelia had to give, even what was most precious to her. Now Gerrit Laninga—a man who puts God and country above all else—arrives at her house, needing help. She is terrified for herself and terrified for her family, but most of all, terrified of the pain she might feel again if she allows herself to love Gerrit. Her hope is to be free from her paralyzing fear.

Gerrit is a known and hunted Dutch Resistance member. When he comes to Cornelia's home for shelter, he's drawn to her strength and kindness. When he asks her to contact the local Resistance on his behalf, she refuses. Gerrit is determined to find a way to continue his underground work without putting Cornelia or her family in harm's way.

When things start to unravel and Gerrit’s life depends on her actions, she must summon her courage and learn to depend on the perfect love that drives out all fear. But will her new love be snatched away before it has a chance to bloom?

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo emma-stone-profile_zps5ff551ec.jpg I would have Emma Stone cast as Cornelia

photo robert-pattinson-photoshoot_zps6d94df9d.jpg and Robert Pattinson as Gerrit.

Now, I have to tell you, I have no idea who these actors are because I’m not big into the blockbuster movies. I looked them up on the internet and liked what I saw LOL!

Yes, they're definitely two lovely looking young actors!

What is a gift you wish you could give for Christmas this year, and to whom would you give it?

I wish I could give my son a plane ticket home. He’s in the Marines stationed in California completing some training. He called the other day and mentioned spending the holidays with my cousin in Los Angeles. While I’m happy he’ll be with family, I’m going to miss him so much. With his schedule, he won’t be able to make it home.

Oh, Liz, I can't imagine. I'm sure that's so difficult for both of you.

What are you working on now?

Right now I’m deep into the third novel in my Women of Courage series. It has the working title of Remember the Violets and is set in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila during WWII. Over 3700 Westerners were prisoners there during the war and many starved to death at the end.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

What is the latest you have ever stayed up reading a book because you had to find out what was going to happen?

Mary Ellis and Free Books!

photo AmishMiracle1_zps430dbb7e.jpg Is God punishing Hope for giving up her firstborn son?

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Stone of Destiny, by Mary Ball, is:

justinefugett@ . .

Now let's revisit with novelist Mary Ellis, author of Always in My Heart from An Amish Miracle anthology (Harper Collins, December 2013).

photo MaryEllislowresfull_zps819ee0e8.jpg Mary Ellis has written ten bestselling novels set in the Amish community. Before "retiring" to write full-time, Mary taught school and worked as a sales rep for Hershey Chocolate.

Living in Harmony, book one of her current series, won the 2012 Lime Award for Excellence in Amish Fiction. Book two, Love Comes to Paradise, has been nominated for a 2013 Lime Award.

An Amish Miracle, a collection of novellas has just released from Harper Collins.

She is currently working on a three-book historical romance series set during the Civil War. The Quaker and the Rebel releases January 1st.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I am prone to giggle whenever nervous, such as during important meetings or at my own wedding.

--I’ve taken in at least a dozen stray pets over the years, both dogs and cats.

--I don’t know how to bake from scratch, but I’ll gladly eat sweets baked from scratch.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Always in My Heart.

photo AmishMiracle1_zps430dbb7e.jpg Hope Bowman believes God is punishing her for giving up her firstborn son when she was a teenager. She’s hidden this secret from her husband, who is thankful for their daughters but longs for a son.

Hope prays desperately, but the son God sends her isn’t a new baby but the fifteen-year-old boy she gave up years ago.

Why will readers care about Hope?

Because almost every American family has an adopted child somewhere along the line. As an adopted child myself, I loved examining how difficult this issue can be.

What is a gift you wish you could give for Christmas this year, and to whom would you give it?

I wish I could give restored health to several good friends who are ill.

What are you working on now?

I am currently finishing book 2 of my Civil War Heroines series, The Lady and the Officer, set in Richmond during the final years of the war.

Where else can readers find you online?

I can be found on the web at www.maryellis.net or Facebook

The book can be purchased in fine book stores and online via the following buttons:

Dorothy Love and Free Books!

photo Carolinagoldcoverwiththebirds_zps92a1c736.jpg The war is over. But at Fairhaven Plantation, Charlotte’s battle is just beginning.

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Angel Falls, by Connie Mann, is:

seriousreader@ . .

Now let's visit with novelist Dorothy Love, author of Carolina Gold (Thomas Nelson, December 2013).

photo DSC_0049_pp_zps91d06558.jpg Dorothy Love is an award winning author of sixteen novels for adults, preteens, and young adults.

A former college professor and former school administrator, she has written full time for the last twenty years. Her popular Hickory Ridge series, set in her native Tennessee marked her return to stories that offer readers a fascinating blend of history, mystery, and romance.

Dorothy makes her home in the Texas Hill Country with her husband and a beloved golden retriever.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--My dream is to live at the beach.

--I don’t like licorice, yogurt, or oysters.

--I paid for my undergrad degree by writing for newspapers and working in a retail store.

On these cold, wintry days, Dorothy, your beach dream sounds especially heavenly.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Carolina Gold.

photo Carolinagoldcoverwiththebirds_zps92a1c736.jpg Charlotte Fraser returns to her late father’s rice plantation on the Waccamaw River to fulfill her promise to him to restore the house and resume cultivating Carolina Gold rice. But the house and fields are in ruins, the former slaves are free, and money is scarce.

To make ends meet, Charlotte writes articles for a “Yankee” newspaper and tutors the two small daughters of her attractive widowed neighbor on the river, Nicholas Betancourt. Just as Charlotte’s friendship with Nicholas deepens, a boundary dispute, and a long-buried family secret threaten everything she holds dear.

Carolina Gold is inspired by the life of Elizabeth Allston Pringle, a real-life 19th century rice planter who returned to the Lowcountry after the war to live at Chicora Wood, her father’s plantation, and work the land.

Why will readers care about your lead character?

Charlotte is courageous but vulnerable, confused but determined to keep her promises. Readers will, I hope, root for her to succeed and for her to find love with Nicholas despite events that threaten their relationship.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Unknown_zpsfabb310b.jpeg He is a bit too old for the role of Nicholas now, but when I was writing the novel, I had a photo of a younger Colin Firth taped to my computer. The hero would have to be someone like Colin---tall, dark, and handsome.

 photo images_zps273c727f.jpeg Henry Cavil maybe?

photo images-1_zps9278a6b8.jpeg Kate Mara might make a good Charlotte.

What is a gift you wish you could give for Christmas this year, and to whom would you give it?

At the risk of sounding like a Miss America contestant, I certainly wish I could give the gift of peace and the ability to compromise to our country’s leaders.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I read several novels a week so it’s hard to recommend just one. I loved Elaine Orr’s novel A Different Sun , about a Georgia planter’s daughter who marries a missionary in the 1850s and travels with him to Africa to establish a church. The descriptions of Africa were spellbinding, and the characters were compelling. I’m partial to historical novels so this one was a real treat for me.

For readers who prefer contemporary stories, I would recommend Lisa Wingate’s new novel, The Prayer Box . It’s set on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, one of my favorite story settings but the main reason to love it is the main character, Tandi Jo, who is deeply flawed and on the run from an abusive husband with two kids in tow. This is a story of determination and the redemption of a character who is at first a bit hard to like. But I wound up admiring Tandi Jo and rooting for her to make a new and better life.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just turned in my 2014 novel, tentatively titled The Bracelet. It’s set in antebellum Savannah, and like Carolina Gold, is inspired by actual events. The Bracelet revolves around an unsolved murder that took place in the carriage house of a mansion on Madison Square in the 1860’s. Like many of my previous novels, it’s a mix of history, mystery and romance but this one also has a dash of suspense. I loved working on it and hope readers will enjoy it.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

How do you discover new authors? By browsing in bookstores? Browsing online? Or by word of mouth—getting recommendations from family and friends? Some other way?

Thanks, Dorothy, for visiting with us and telling us about your novel. Readers, Dorothy has offered to give a signed copy of her book to the winner of our drawing on Monday, December 23. For Diann Hunt, With Love

photo Unknown-1_zps4eae4294.jpeg Today's bonus post is about my friend, Diann Hunt, who stepped into the arms of her Savior on Friday, November 29.

Although we crossed paths several times at writers' conferences, I met Diann in person in 2008, when we were newly contracted to work together with three other lovely authors, Kristin Billerbeck, Sandie Bricker, and Debby Mayne, on the devotional, Delight Yourself in the Lord . . . Even on Bad Hair Days. I was struck -- then and always -- by how gracious Diann was. Behind that sweet smile was a truly sweet heart.

photo images_zpsc1cbf27b.jpeg At the time we met, at the American Christian Fiction Writers conference in Indianapolis, Diann was in the midst of her battle against ovarian cancer. By the time our book went to print, she had made great strides and had kicked cancer to the curb.

photo COVER_Final_BadHair_zps63749ed3.jpg Sandie wrote this heartfelt dedication to Diann for the front of our devotional, which was published in 2010:

To our favorite warrior, Diann Hunt. You blessed your fellow authors and editor with your grace and courage as you waged your own battle with ovarian cancer while writing these devotions. We are so happy, humbled, and grateful that the war is over. Your victory is ours as well, and we can't wait to see what God has planned for you on this side of the beast!

With love, admiration, and joy,

Kristin, Sandie, Debby, Trish, and Connie [our editor]

As hard as it is to read that dedication now, knowing the cancer would return, I find it bittersweet to reflect that it still applies. Diann's war with cancer is over now. And she has truly experienced victory over that beast.

photo images-1_zps3d1112b1.jpeg Also at the ACFW conference were Diann's Girls Write Out friends and colleagues, Colleen Coble, Cheryl Hodde, Denise Hunter (and Kristin).

The ladies were able to sign a contract together for what would become the very popular Smitten series, the yet-to-be-released installment of which -- Smitten Book Club -- will be released in 2014. Through all she endured, Diane continued to contribute her writing gift to these endeavors.

photo Smitten-Book-Club_zpsaf16d415.jpg That was one of the many amazing things about Diane. She remained focused on, and dedicated to, the gifts God gave her. She strived to share those gifts as He wanted her to, even as she fought valiantly for her life.

One quick look at Diane's Facebook page will show you how she remained hopeful about life, grateful to God, and encouraging to others, right to the very end of her time here on earth.

 photo img_0082_zps6ec8453b.jpg
Please keep Diann's family in your prayers today and whenever she comes to mind.

And if you would like to leave a comment here, please feel free. We've all lost a truly marvelous woman from our midst, until we see her again.

 Love you, Diann. photo Unknown_zpsfe46aa74.jpeg

Mary Ball and Free Books!

photo StoneofDestiny__zps0d2f2464.jpg Can a mysterious ring change lives?

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Taming the Sheriff, by Cynthia Hickey, is:

debs514@ . .

Now let's visit with novelist Mary Ball, author of Stone of Destiny (Prism Book Group, September 2013).

 photo piconbookcover_zpsfeab4aae.jpg
Mary, please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I sing.

-- My favorite televising channel is HGTV.

-- My husband is a hunter and we eat venison meat.

Venison! I used to live on a wooded property, and one of the perks of letting friends hunt there were the tenderloins they used to give us.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Stone of Destiny.

photo StoneofDestiny__zps0d2f2464.jpg The sapphire stone symbolizes mental clarity, faithfulness and truth.

There’s a legend in the Harrison family which revolves around a piece of jewelry. It’s told that lives have been changed because of a Sapphire ring and the prayers of the ancestors.

A long-ago tragedy befalls the family, and the ring is lost, fifty years later Taylor finds it. She doesn’t need a change. Taylor enjoys her career and has her life mapped out. All she’s going to do is make sure her family home is renovated to sell, and then she’s back to her normal life--or so she thinks.

Taylor Harrison has given up on everything but her work. The youngest CEO of Mugful’s Beverage Company, her life is complete. That is, until her grandmother asks her to oversee renovations at the family home and find the missing heirloom.

First contact with what she believes is an insignificant ring, lost for fifty years, sends her life spinning. Taylor experiences strange dreams. Feelings surface; she doesn't understand; thoughts that should remain unspoken, voiced.

Taylor’s emotional journey begins, testing a heart as cold as the ring itself.

Is this a fairy-tale or her soul, reaching out for a life she can only find through faith and trust in God?

Why will readers care about your lead character?

Taylor Harrison is a confident strong-willed lady on the outside, but underneath her persona she has the same insecurities a lot of us have.

What is a gift you wish you could give for Christmas this year, and to whom would you give it?

I wish I could give my husband a new truck--without the payments. LOL

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

My TBR list is long, besides reading from the bestselling authors I read a lot of books from my fellow authors. On a Summer Night by Diane Dean White is the last one I have read. Through reading her novel, I realized how tribulations will often affect people differently, depending on where they live.

What are you working on now?

I have two works going on. I didn’t plan it that way, it just happened. The one I’m focusing on now, is A Message from Heaven.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

I have a family with a bit of a sweet-tooth. Are there any simple and easy dessert recipes you’d like to share with me?

Great question! I'm always up for sweet recipes, too!

Connie Mann and Free Books!

photo AngelFallsbyConnieMann_zps06bfb113.jpg In Angel Falls, a fiercely protective Brazilian orphanage director and a burned-out Army Ranger are forced together in a deadly race to save one helpless baby.

Before we visit today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the signed copy of Christmas at Harmony Hill, by Ann Gabhart, is:

shopgirl152nykiki@ . . .

and the winner of the signed copy of The Sheep Walker's Daughter, by Sydney Avey, is:

susanmsj@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll email you today to get your mailing addresses, and we'll get your books to you right away.

Now let's visit with novelist Connie Mann, author of Angel Falls (Abingdon Press, March 2013).

photo AngelFallsauthorConnieMann_zps50f37724.jpg Connie Mann loves stories of suspense, adventure and second chances. She offers encouragement to busy women on her blog and is an active member of Romance Writers of America and American Christian Fiction Writers.

She’s also a USCG-licensed boat captain, so when she’s not writing, she’s usually on Central Florida’s waterways with local school children or her fabulous family.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

-- I speak fluent German (Mom’s from Germany) and want to learn Portuguese (Dad’s from Brazil).

--I love pizza—breakfast, lunch, supper—maybe even more than chocolate. Gasp.

--Even though I get up early, I am not, no matter how much I try, a chipper morning person.

You know, Connie, there are quite a few yummy chocolate pizza recipes online. You may be able to have your pizza and eat your chocolate, too . . .

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Angel Falls.

photo AngelFallsbyConnieMann_zps06bfb113.jpg When her best friend is murdered, Brazilian orphanage director Regina da Silva vows to do whatever it takes to protect her friend’s baby. Even if it means dealing with an intimidating man she’s not sure she can trust.

Former Army Ranger Brooks Anderson won’t protect anyone ever again. The last time he tried, they died. He’s just here to transport an orphan for adoption, as promised, and then he’s outta there.

As the killer closes in and long-buried secrets come to light, they’ll have to trust each other to stay alive.

Will that be enough to save their little angel--and themselves—from certain death?

Why will readers care about Regina?

Regina is not only tough, she is fierce—especially when it comes to protecting the children in her care. She grew up on the streets and though she longs for a family of her own, she doesn’t think she deserves one. She has a huge-though-battered heart and we want a hero for her who will love her just the way she is and give her the family she so desperately longs for!

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo images_zps9d54c9de.jpeg I would cast Penelope Cruz as Regina

photo gerard-butler-20_zpsf175cb6a.jpg and Gerard Butler as Brooks, no question.

Wouldn’t that be fabulous?

Indeed! I chose a no-makeup picture of Penelope Cruz, because I didn't picture your Regina as going for the glam look. Can you believe that's her no-makeup look?

What is a gift you wish you could give for Christmas this year, and to whom would you give it?

I spent 6 weeks in the Philippines during college and my heart aches for the folks there after the typhoon. I wish I had the resources to rebuild every home that was destroyed, to make sure no child went hungry, ever again, to build orphanages for children who have no family.

Oh, yes, what a wonderful gift that would be. So many people in dire straits today.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I just finished Lisa Carter’s Aloha Rose the other day and really enjoyed it. It’s not suspense, but Lisa takes us deep into Hawaiian culture, which was fascinating to me, and shows us what “home” means there. The story also centers around a quilt, and since I collect antique quilts, I was hooked from the first…stitch.

What are you working on now?

I am editing a new modern-day pirate-treasure-hunt story set in Florida. I’m also editing another story about jewel thieves, set in Venice, Italy. Fun, fun, fun.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

What is the one thing (object or event) that says “Christmas” for you? (i.e. It’s not Christmas until…)

I think it feels like Christmas once the decorations go up at home. I'm a tad behind on that this year!

Thanks, Connie, for visiting with us and telling us about your novel. Readers, Connie has offered to give a signed copy of her book to the winner of our drawing on Monday, December 16.
