photo Marty booksigning1_zpswx9m5y4w.jpg A lifetime spent in rural Pennsylvania and her own Pennsylvania Dutch heritage led Marta to write about the Plain People who add so much richness to the heritage of her home state. Marta has seen over nearly sixty of her books published.

She and her husband live in a centuries-old farmhouse on twenty-five acres in a central Pennsylvania valley.

When she’s not writing, she’s reading, traveling, sewing, baking, or enjoying her six beautiful grandchildren.

Please tell us three random things we might not know about you.

--I’ve visited almost 20 countries and hope to get to a few more before I’m finished.

--I once spent an entire parade on a float in a mermaid costume which didn’t allow me to walk.

--My husband says I’m a perfectionist about only two things—being a grandmother and writing.

I love the image of the mermaid, Marta. That would be fun in a story.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Rebel.

Restless and adventurous, Amish Barbie Lapp has been stepping out among the Englisch. Minister Benuel Kauffman doesn’t approve of her choices, but he can’t deny the positive influence Barbie has on his wayward teenage sister.

As Barbie is drawn to the kindness beneath Benuel’s gruff exterior, the mementos she finds in a dower chest given to her by her grandmother, Elizabeth, provide the insight she needs to decide whether to fully embrace the Amish way of life or leave it behind for forever.

Lancaster County, 1960.

As working farms for the Amish become scarce, Elizabeth Lapp’s husband, Reuben, tries to persuade her that they would be better off moving north. But the prospect of leaving her close-knit community of family and friends frightens Elizabeth. Can she muster enough love and faith to leap into a new life?

Two women from one family, separated by decades, both find that the ultimate adventure takes place in the heart.

What is it about Barbie that will make your readers care about her?

Barbie is lively and rebellious, always looking for something different from the restricted life she’s known, but her warm heart leads her to take endless trouble for those who need help.

If you were the casting director for the film version of your novel, who would play your lead roles?

photo Unknown_zpsnwqfzixn.jpeg A young Harrison Ford!

How would you complete this sentence: Had I known twenty years ago what I know today, I would have  . . .

. . . done things in exactly the same way. Even though I’ve made mistakes and stumbled often, I’ve learned from every experience of my life, both personal and writing.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I recently read Linda Goodnight’s The Memory House and found it so moving. It’s about the ability to rise above bad experiences and forge a new life filled with family and love.

What are you working on now?

I’ve just finished a Christmas Novella that will be out in November from Love Inspired Books, titled The Midwife’s Christmas Surprise. What could be more Christmasy than a lost love returned, an unexpected baby, and a snowstorm?
