And now let's meet novelist Regina Merrick, author of the contemporary romance, Carolina Grace (Mantle Rock Publishing, LLC, February 2019).

Regina Rudd Merrick began reading romance and thinking of book ideas as early as her teenage years when she attempted a happily-ever-after sequel to “Gone With the Wind.” That love of fiction parlayed into a career as a librarian, and finally to writing full-time.

She began attending local writing workshops and continued to hone her craft by writing several short and novel-length fan-fiction pieces published online, where she met other authors with a similar love for story, a Christian worldview, and happily-ever-after.

Married for 30+ years and active in their church in Marion, Kentucky, Regina and her husband have two grown daughters who share her love of music, writing, and the arts.

Regina is the author of three books: Carolina Dream (Apr. 2017), Carolina Mercy (July 2018), and Carolina Grace (February 2019) in the Southern Breeze Series.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

While I love writing and I love music, I have a passion for interior design and organization. I can spend hours poring over floorplans, online shopping sites, Pinterest, etc.!

Oh, me too. The last time I moved, I had to part with a couple of boxes of Architecural Digest. A reality check convinced me that I would never mimic any of the grand design schemes in there!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Carolina Grace.

She knows about God’s grace for her life, but pushes it away. He hasn’t experienced it, but finds grace in a way he never expected.

First-year Special Education teacher Charly Livingston demonstrates God’s love on the outside, but is resentful that God allowed back-to-back tragedies to happen to her family.

Rance Beaumont is a top-notch medical intern. He’s on his way to the top, and when he meets Charly, he knows things can only get better. When he discovers family secrets and a dying father he never knew, his easy life seems to disintegrate. Even in the idyllic ocean breezes and South Carolina sunshine, contentment can quickly turn to bitterness and confusion except for God’s amazing grace.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Charlotte (Charly) Livingston is a 24-year-old new teacher with her life ahead of her. Having always been a “good girl,” she seems to have everything under control, but there’s a part of her that’s rebelling against God. Where was He when her dad passed away suddenly? Where was He when her mom went blind? Outwardly, she’s all about the Christian life, but inwardly, she’s distancing herself from God. It’s something that most of us, as Christians, go through at some point in our lives.

Rance Butler, on the other hand, seems to have it all – but he doesn’t have God. When a major heartbreak comes his way, he’s not sure how to cope with it, but when he gets to know Charly, he wonders about her God.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I always have a novel going! The book I’m currently reading is Where the Fire Falls by Karen Barnett. It’s the second in her Vintage National Parks series, and is amazing. Set in the early 1900’s, this series reminds me of Grace Livingston Hill’s novels, but updated, and I’m in love with the settings. The early days of the National Park system is so interesting, and she does an wonderful job creating the settings in print, as well as the love story and other characters. I highly recommend this series. There is a third coming out in June!

What are you working on now?

At present I am working on a novella that will tie in with the Southern Breeze Series! It’s part of a 4-novella collection with three other Mantle Rock Publishing authors. We all picked an island on the Eastern Seaboard, and that’s where our story will take place! Mine is Pawley’s Island, which is in the same neighborhood as Carolina Dream, Carolina Mercy, and Carolina Grace. You’ll see some familiar characters and places in this story! When that’s done, I have an idea for a new series that will include a brother/sister duo who own a design/build firm!

And now let's chat with novelist Kay DiBianca, author of the romantic mystery, The Watch on the Fencepost (CrossLink Publishing, February 2019).

Kay DiBianca holds an MS degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in the IT departments of several major corporations, including IBM, International Paper, and FedEx.

An avid runner, Kay can often be found at a nearby track, on the treadmill, or at a large park near her home. She's completed four marathons, fifteen or so half-marathons, and an unknown number of shorter races. Her idea of high fashion is a new pair of Sauconys.

Kay and her husband, Frank, are retired and live in Memphis, Tennessee. They are US representatives of Bridges for Peace, an international Christian organization, whose mission is to serve the people of Israel.

Kay’s first novel, The Watch on the Fencepost, received the 2019 Illumination Awards Bronze Medal for General Fiction.

I met my husband at a horse barn. (We think that’s the reason we have such a stable marriage. )

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Watch on the Fencepost.
In a deserted park on a cold winter day, 27-year-old Kathryn Frasier is training for a marathon when she discovers a gold watch on a fencepost. Sensing that it was deliberately left for her to find, she sets out to solve the mystery behind the watch. 

But her orderly life is turned upside-down when it leads her to a dark family secret and a suspicion that her parents' recent deaths may not have been an accident. Thrown into the hunt for a possible killer, Kathryn peels back layer after layer of cryptic clues, and encounters an extraordinary cast of characters, including an actress with a talent for disguises, a politician with a secret of his own, and a handsome businessman who shows a sudden romantic interest in Kathryn.

But is the search for truth worth risking her own life?

What is it about Kathryn Frasier that will make your readers care about her?

Many 21st century heroines are alpha females, wielding some serious weaponry while combating the evil enemy. Kathryn Frasier is not one of those. She’s a quiet, intelligent, somewhat nerdy young software developer. However, when presented with a suspicion that her parents’ recent deaths were not accidental as had been reported, all her problem-solving skills kick in, and she is transformed into a tenacious, determined sleuth.

Along the way, she develops a surprising relationship with Phil Warren, a handsome businessman with whom she has had a history of miscommunication.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I recently read Christy by Catherine Marshall. Even though it was written in the 60’s and is very famous, I had never read it. I was fascinated with the description of the Appalachian highlanders and the young woman who chose to leave a comfortable home to work among them. Christy’s challenges and triumphs in 1912 are as relevant today as they were then, and they can serve as a guidebook for any young woman leaving home to find her way in the world.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a sequel to The Watch on the Fencepost. The new book is titled Dead Man’s Watch where Kathryn will be thrown into another puzzle dilemma.

During the Carter and Reagan administrations, I served as a member of the team of atmospheric scientists who managed the meteorological component of the Federal Wind Energy Program. There I represented the United States on an international work group studying the application of wind forecasts to wind-turbine operation and economics. If you Google “H. L. Wegley wind energy,” you’ll find some of my publications. It’s amazing that they’re still around after all these years.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Janus Journals.

For recent college graduate, Alisa (Allie) Petrenko, the Cold War never ended. When her father is murdered, he left her with a warning, an assassin on her trail, and his secret history contained in a set of journals.

As Allie tries to elude the assassin and read the journals, she learns that the loving father who raised her was not the man he appeared to be, and the man she must now trust with her life is someone Allie must never trust with her heart.

The Janus Journals, set in Virginia and near Lake Chelan in Washington State, is high-action romantic suspense at its best. The dual timeline will take you on an epic journey through the twilight years of the Cold War that reshaped one man’s destiny while creating deadly tentacles, reaching into the present, threatening an innocent young woman.

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Allie Petrenko lost her mother to a dread disease when Allie was five. This left her an agnostic with a paralyzing fear of death, thanatophobia. The readers will root for her as she tries to become a fearless young woman who thinks of herself as honorable, lovable, and strong rather than despicable and cowardly.

Grady Jamison’s sister was a passenger in his car when a drunk hit them, killing her. Grady thinks that protecting Allie from the assassin is his chance to redeem himself and end his deep-seated guilt. However, there are a lot more benefits to knowing Allie Petrenko than Grady could possibly realize. But readers will probably discover this long before Grady because, as we all know, guys are clueless.

I love the levity at the end of such a serious plot summary.

I’ve taken this to heart and try to write stories in light of Randy Singer’s assertions.

That's such a great reminder. I'm in the middle of writing a novella right now, and this quote inspires me to keep the Lord in mind while my heroine's story unfolds.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Heart of the Country by Rene Gutteridge, she took a movie script, a barebones story, and fleshed it out into a superb novel with three-dimensional characters. It is the job of living actors and actresses to make a script come to life. But few people can do what Rene did with someone else’s story. Heart of the Country is a good teaching/learning tool for authors. If you enjoy audiobooks, the audio version is superb.

Rene's so talented and definitely knows her way around a script.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a story that doesn’t yet have a name, though I’m considering Bold Betrayal as a possible title. Its plot might have been borrowed from news media headlines, depending on which media sources one reads. The story is about a young man who uncovers the impacts of biases in a search-engine company’s algorithms and data presentation. He predicts this company will determine the next president of the United States. And he makes an accusation that the bias is subtle and intentional. But before he can release his report—yeah, bad things happen. This novel will release about May 1, 2019.

Tom Donnan died on February 6th 2006 of a heart attack. His first experience was hearing God speak to him. He said: “It is only while you are on earth that you can work for Jesus!” The paramedics brought Tom back to life, and his passion is serving the Lord.

He has three children and five grandchild. Retired from a 44-year career as an elevator mechanic, he now writes, speaks, and ministers as God opens the doors.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of One Door Between Us.

The book is all about what happens when God enters a family and the changes that take place with each of them. It is not just a salvation message, the supernatural side of God becomes part of their lives. The book is written to allow the reader to see what is happening on both sides, in our world and the spiritual realm.

The main character, Arielle steps through two important doors in her life. One door is to lasting love and the other is answering the call of God upon her life.

What is it about Arielle that will make your readers care about her?

Arielle has an insatiable desire to know the truth in every story and a goal to achieve lofty educational degrees. It is her love and desire to please God that is seen through the book. Although Arielle is the named character in the book, the real woman goes on in life to walk the path God sets before her. Brave and courageous; she grows into the person God has hoped her to be.

“Police station, this is officer Henry. How can I help you?”.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I have shifted my reading list from Christian arena to diving into my text books. I have loved the Left Behind [image error] series and enjoy a good adventure novel with the unforeseen twist and turn.

I remember that nonfiction-only period while working on my degree, Tom. I was so eager to get back to fiction reading once I graduated!

What are you working on now?

Now that the marketing of this book has begun, I am choppin' at the bit to begin the second book in this series. Three years ago I met three dynamic lady pastors. Once I questioned them about their lives, I saw where God was ever present and very active from their beginning.

I wanted to learn how to crochet because I always saw my Nanny crocheting. She tried teaching me when I was little, but I finally taught myself by watching YouTube videos.

That's fantastic that the YouTube videos did the trick for you. I remember that one of my many never-finished craft projects was a crocheted animal. I think I got the top of the head done before moving on. So I essentially crocheted a doll-sized yarmulke. Sigh.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Soul Searcher.

The Soul Searcher is the second book in my series, The Kalila Chronicles. It picks up immediately after the first book, The Seer and doesn’t slow down.

In the first book, a teenage girl named Thea is thrown into a world of ancient societies, demons, and angels. The series started out as an assignment for a writing workshop where I had to write from a villain's or unlikely hero’s view.

In The Seer, the angel, Matthias, and the demon, Viktor, are brothers. Viktor fell from heaven when Lucifer was kicked out. Both of them are assigned to Thea. There are thousands of years of history between the two of them and lots of anger too, especially when they are forced to work together to save Thea’s life.

In book two, there are new threats and dangers for the group, and a more in-depth look at a new character, Elnora. I’m really excited about Elnora’s story.

What is it about Elnora that will make your readers care about her?

Elnora has faced circumstances that she had no control over and the results of those circumstances have touched every aspect of her life. But now, when the stakes are raised even more, and Elnora finds herself kidnapped, we get to see how Elnora reacts and walks through these changes. I think readers will be able to connect with her because we all have things that we go through that we don’t have any control over.

Please share with us your novel’s opening line.

The slam of the front door echoed in the small living room with such a finality that Elnora wanted to reach out and take it back. To tell Thea she changed her mind and she needed to go with them.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’m currently reading Unblemished by Sara Ella. So far, I’m really enjoying the book. If you like fantasy, and portals that take you to new places, you will probably like this.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on book three of The Kalila Chronicles, and a new novella series.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I can sing all 50 states in alphabetical order thanks to a music unit in fourth grade. This skill comes in surprisingly handy.

What a great idea, and it's so cool that it stuck with you. I love the connection our memories have between facts and music.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Within These Lines.

Evalina Cassano's life in an Italian-American family in 1941 is everything it "should be" until she falls in love with Taichi Hamasaki, the son of Japanese immigrants. Despite the scandal it would cause and that inter-racial marriage is illegal in California, Evalina and Taichi vow they will find a way to be together. But anti-Japanese feelings erupt across the country after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Taichi and his family are forced to give up their farm and move to an internment camp.

Degrading treatment make life at Manzanar Relocation Center difficult. Taichi's only connection to the outside world are treasured letters from Evalina. Feeling that the only action she can take to help Taichi is to speak out on behalf of all Japanese Americans, Evalina becomes increasingly vocal at school and at home. Meanwhile, inside Manzanar, fighting between different Japanese-American factions arises. Taichi begins to doubt he will ever leave the camp alive.

With tensions running high and their freedom on the line, Evalina and Taichi must hold true to their values and believe in their love to make a way back to each other against unbelievable odds.

That's an excellent story idea, Stephanie! The only novel I've read about that time period was Stewart David Ikeda's What the Scarecrow Said, years ago (not a Young Adult novel). It was a very moving account of a sad time in our history. It's wonderful that you've written your book for a younger audience to read.

What is it about Evalina that will make your readers care about her?

Evalina is strong and fiery in temperament, but she’s also tender and compassionate. She cares deeply about social injustice and looking out for those who are vulnerable.

Please share with us your novel’s opening line.

When I jolt awake, the familiar fear smothers my early morning thoughts and thrums through my veins.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. I had heard tons of amazing things about the book, and it really lived up to all the hype. Even though the history Wingate explores in the story is horrifying and sad, the book still manages to feel hopeful. It’s one I’ll continue to re-read as years pass!

Yes, Lisa's book is often listed in response to this question. I have it on my TBR list (as do many readers, obviously). I've read articles about the subject matter as a result of Lisa's research. You're right--horrifying.

When I was young and single, my motto was “Love me, love my horse,” because, hey, you didn’t get one without the other. I won’t mention how long I stayed single.

Well, I hope you stuck to your guns. Or, at least to your horse. I assume a good horse-loving man can be hard to find.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of A Love Most Worthy.

Hallie Russell believes life should be lived to the fullest. For that reason, she sails to the gold rush town of Nome, Alaska to take her cousin’s place as the mail-order bride of a respected shopkeeper. But when her aloof husband’s wedding-night announcement rocks her plans for their marriage, Hallie sees her desire for a family to call her own vanish as quickly as the dreams of hopeful miners.

Tragedy led Rance Preston to repent of his rowdy ways and open a general store for the miners in Nome. He’s content in his bachelorhood, but his two orphaned nephews deserve a proper and serious-minded mother. Duped once by a vivacious female, he’s determined to never again let his heart overrule his head…until the high spirits of his new bride threaten his resolve.

When a misunderstanding comes to light, will they allow the gale force winds of insecurity to destroy what they each need most?

What is it about your lead characters that will make your readers care about them?

Hallie is spirited and embraces adventure, however, all she really wants is to be a cherished part of a family. Rance’s attitude reinforces the belief instilled by her father that she’s of no more value than the cook stove.

For Rance’s part, his past won’t allow him to trust his own judgment, and he won’t risk the safety of his nephews—again.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

The one who sticks out to me is Bane from Elizabeth Camden’s Against the Tide . He’s a dangerous and mysterious prankster. I love that whenever he’s near Lydia’s desk, somehow, things get moved around. It drives the OCD heroine crazy.

What a fun personality conflict. 

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I recently finished Nancy Mehl’s new novel, Mind Games . It’s different from the typical “romantic suspense” and had me guessing the whole way, taking various twists and turns. I’ve read a number of her books and, in my opinion, this is the best.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I’m working on a historical romance Christmas novella. I’m also developing a plan to release it in the fall as the prequel to a series of three additional novels.

Award winning author Kimberly Rose Johnson married her college sweetheart and lives in the Pacific Northwest. From a young child Kimberly has been an avid reader. That love of reading fostered a creative mind and led to her passion for writing. She especially loves romance and writes contemporary romance that warms the heart and feeds the soul.

At age ten I knocked myself out by doing a death drop on the bars at school.

Ah, the joys of being a "tom-boy." I remember the face plant I did in the process of learning the death drop. We're lucky we didn't break our faces, aren't we?

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Sleuth's Dilemma.

Anna loves her job as a high school English teacher until everything goes sideways. The one bright spot in her life is Titus Gains, the school counselor, who is there for her at every turn.

Titus’ boss complicates his ordered world when she tasks him with running a meeting that changes everything. How had he not noticed Anna earlier? Someone is out to destroy her, and he can’t let that happen.

As the head of the English department, part of Luke Harms’ job is to make sure everything runs smoothly. Things went haywire when Anna was put in charge of the big writing contest. Entries are missing, Anna appears to be in danger, and her job is on the line. Luke is investigating and wants to make things right for this woman he’s starting to care about.

Can a trio of school officials along with Nancy Daley, the town sleuth, stop the saboteur before it’s too late? And will Anna choose the right man, or lose them both?

Plenty of intrigue in that one!

What is it about Nancy Daley that will make your readers care about her?

Nancy loves a good mystery, and she loves to help the people in her life. Sometimes that means doing crazy things, which put her in harms way. She also is the town’s librarian and loves books so much so that she takes on some of the vocabulary from whichever book she is reading.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Believe it or not Trish, I just finished reading one of your books. Together by Design captivated me from the opening line. I don’t usually read books fast, but I did with this one.

I'm flattered, Kimberly! I'm so glad you enjoyed Elena's story. She certainly has her hands full.

What are you working on now?

I am currently writing the final book in the Librarian Sleuth Series. It’s set to release in November of 2019.
