Contest alert and personal update

The second of four Twice Tempted Arc contests is now up on my Facebook page (Missed the first Arc contest? It's on Goodreads and it's ending soon!). To enter the Facebook contest, you have to "like" my page or have "liked" it in the past. Not on Facebook or Goodreads? Don't worry, I'm having a contest on my website blog soon where all you need is the ability to email to enter.

Speaking of Twice Tempted, I was so happy to see this review from Romantic Times:

"Despite fiery lovers Vlad and Leila surviving an attack by one of Vlad's old foes, the road to romance is not going smoothly. Book two in megastar Frost's Night Prince series illustrates the challenges facing these two and the results are not pretty. But fortunately, this means readers are in for a story that is emotionally intense, chock full of danger and violence and loaded with flaming passion. What more could you want?" ~ Jill M. Smith, Top Pick!

My Overstuffed Bookshelf, Vampire Book Club, and Pure Textuality also gave Twice Tempted 5 stars. Less glowing reviews will come, of course, but for now I'm going to tell myself this is a clear indication that everyone will love the book. *grin* Allow me my illusions for a few more days, will you?

Now, onto the personal update. Remember last Tuesday I blogged about how I was going to blog more, and then you didn't hear from me for a week? Well, on Wednesday I had my gall bladder removed because according to tests, it didn't work. Luckily, a gall bladder is one of those don't-need-'em organs, but it did make for a stressful February since I rushed back from my mother's unexpected emergency surgery in Florida to have my own previously-scheduled surgery in North Carolina. I'd hoped to be back to work on Saturday, but I found out something I'd forgotten in the nine years since my last laparoscopic surgery: it makes you tired. Soreness and being reduced to feeling like an upside-down turtle aside (try sitting up or getting out of bed without using any stomach muscles. You end up flopping your limbs like a turtle on its back!), it's the tiredness that takes the most toll. Good news is that I'm getting more energy with each passing day, so I hope to be up to full steam by the end of the week. Here I want to thank God, the doctors and the nurses for everything going smoothly with the procedure and my recovery, and hey, healing up has allowed me to watch more episodes of Castle without feeling guilty that I'm not working ;).

Wishing all of you good health, and remember to look for that Twitter contest and the website blog contest soon!

Discounts, events, and more

Sorry for the unexpected blog silence and the promised Arc contests that I haven't posted yet. I have a good reason for both. Before I get to that, however, here are some new updates.

To celebrate the upcoming release of Twice Tempted, for a very limited time only, you can get Once Burned in ebook for only $1.99. Note: This discount is guaranteed for US readers only*. International retailers can choose to raise the price (and they often do, I'm sorry to say). If you're interested, here are some handy ordering links: Kindle, Nook, iTunes, Sony

Another event has been added to my March appearances, and I think you'll agree that this sounds amazing:

March 24th, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Supernatural Sunday Spectacular with Kim Harrison, Vicki Pettersson, Pamela Palmer, and Jeaniene Frost. Hosted by Fountain Book Store. Panel moderated by Kelly Justice, owner of Fountain Book Store.

Location: Sam Miller’s restaurant

1212 East Cary Street

Richmond, Va 23219

If you're not in the area but you want an autographed copy of the latest releases from any of the authors above, you can get one through Fountain Books. Details are on this page. Note: Twice Tempted WILL be the book that I'm autographing at this event, but their website still shows Once Burned. This will be corrected asap, so if you want Twice Tempted, please wait until the page updates to request your signed copy.

Also, to dispel rumors I've seen online, let me stress that the audio version of Twice Tempted will release the same date as the paperback and ebook, which is March 26th. There are, however, no pre-order links available (don't ask me why; I don't understand). Still, again, there will be no delay in the audio version releasing. Thanks to Tavia Gilbert for another wonderful narration.

In a previous post, I said that the first two chapters of Twice Tempted would be available in the free ebook It Happened One Valentine's Day. This turned out to be incorrect. Only the first chapter is available, and apparently the write-up originally posted regarding my inspiration for the story was wrong, too. The latter is supposed to be fixed. The former is what it is, but again, the first 20% will be posted online about two weeks before release. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Finally, here's why I've been offline and you didn't get the promised contests. Last Tuesday, my family called to tell me that my mother had two cardiac arrests. Thank God she was already in the hospital at the time for a kidney infection, so they were able to get her stabilized. She did need emergency surgery to install a pacemaker, though, and because of her other health issues, the surgery was risky. So we drove down to Florida to be with her and the rest of my family. On Valentine's Day, her pacemaker was installed and she came through it all okay (best Valentine's present I've ever received). We stayed on a few more days to help set some stuff up and then drove back on Sunday and Monday. As you can imagine, I now have a lot of business catching up to do, so as soon as I can, I'll get the Arc contests going.

Thanks to everyone for your patience on this and any of the other issues.

* Kobo ebook is incorrectly showing Once Burned at a higher price. I have let my publisher know so that they can fix this.

Teasers, trailers, and a contest head's up

February is already off to a busy start. In addition to writing Up from the Grave (Cat and Bones #7) and getting things ready for the upcoming release of Twice Tempted, this is also apparently Visitation Month at the Frost house. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law were here this past week and just left this morning. Then on Saturday, my niece and her boyfriend are visiting for a week. Right after they leave, four of my husband's friends are staying with us for another week. I'm sure everyone has missed us and it has nothing to do with it being ski season in the mountains *wink*.

Speaking of Twice Tempted, I'm having a book trailer made for the release. People ask me if book trailers have an impact on sales and my answer is an eloquent "I dunno." I do them mostly for existing readers because I think trailers are a neat way to provide another description of the story aside from the back cover copy (and I get a kick out of seeing what Book Candy Studios comes up with). If they happen to snare any new readers into trying the book, that's icing on the cake.  Look for the Twice Tempted trailer to release at the end of this month.

Before then, if you live in the US or Canada, you can get a sneak peek at the first two chapters of Twice Tempted (plus excerpts of other books) in the FREE ebook It Happened One Valentine's Day , which releases on February 12th. If you live in the US or Canada but you don't have an ebook reader, you can still read it on your laptop, phone, desktop, tablet, etc. Instructions are here. If you live outside of the US and Canada, as usual, the first 20% of Twice Tempted (plus all of the other novels in It Happened One Valentine's Day) will be available to read for free on HarperCollins website two weeks before release. I'll be sure to post the link once it's available.

And in the next week or so, also per usual, I'll post the list of songs I listened to while writing Twice Tempted. In case you haven't heard me talk about this before, with each book, I compile a song playlist that I listen to until the book is done. Then I listen to that same playlist again during revisions and copyedits. Basically I'm treating myself like Pavlov's dogs - when I hear a certain set of sounds, i.e., a book playlist, I've conditioned myself to a certain response. In this case, the response is to write/revise that particular book. This process isn't a one-size-fits-all recommendation for writing (nothing is except to write) but it works for me so I stick with it. This is also why you'll see me call out periodically for music recommendations. You have no idea how many of you have helped me write with your song suggestions, so thank you again!

Finally, I promised you a contest head's up, right? Here it is: In the next two weeks, I'll have an Arc giveaway of Twice Tempted on my Twitter page, my Facebook page and my website blog ( http://jeanienefrost.com/blog/ , if you're reading this from LiveJournal or Goodreads) so be sure to check back on all three places if you're interested in winning an early copy. Not on FB or Twitter? That's what the website blog contest is for since all you need is email to enter.

That's it for now. I have to clean up for the next set of guests plus get some work done. Hope you're having a nice February so far!

It's all Ilona's fault

It's no secret that I like to spend my downtime watching TV. After a day melting my brain at the keyboard, kicking back on the couch with the hubby and the furry children is my idea of a nice evening.  I also prefer TV series to movies, probably because I prefer reading/writing series books instead of stand-alone novels and movies kind of remind me of stand-alone novels (unless the movies are part of a series, of course).  Anyway, my friends and I chat about TV shows and swap recommendations much as we do with books. For months, Ilona Andrews has tried to get me to watch the show Castle. Since I don't have endless hours to bum around on the couch, I hadn't gotten to it yet, but earlier this week, I finally did.

Because I loved the TV show Firefly, I'm already a fan of Nathan Fillion. He plays the role of Richard Castle, a wildly successful mystery author who's pulled into a murder investigation after people are killed in the same manner that his books portray. Stana Katic plays Kate Beckett, the tough female detective who doesn't want a writer mucking up her murder investigation. I wasn't wild about the first episode - Castle was over-the-top egocentric (like signing fans' boobs instead of books) and Beckett was over-the-top I am tough and sexy but inwardly vulnerable! - but after the third episode, I was hooked. Their banter is hilarious and I like the cozy mystery aspect of the show. Plus, when the show gets something right about publishing, it makes this writer laugh out loud.

As mentioned, Castle is a charming, rich egomaniac who is so high up the Publishing Totem Pole that he plays a weekly poker game with Stephen J. CannellJames PattersonDennis Lehane, and Michael Connelly. Yet in one episode, he's hanging around Beckett's desk watching her do paperwork because he wants to hide on his release day. Most everything portrayed on this show is not how "real writers" live (I have never been asked to sign boobs! ;)) but this was so reminiscent of what I feel on every release day that I howled laughing. So was the scene later in this episode where Castle's mother calls to worriedly tell him that she was in a book store and no one was buying his new book. I don't know about other authors, but this has happened to me and it went something like this:

Mom:  It's your release day so your father and I made a special trip to the book store! Oh, honey, they had your books but no one was buying them. Don't worry, though - I had your father buy ten.

Me: *headdesk* Mom, why did you do that? I can give you some books for free.

Mom: We wanted to help with your sales. Do you think we bought enough?

Me: *headdesk, headdesk, headdesk*

Mom: *in the background* Bill, go back to the store tomorrow and buy another five books!  Jeaniene sounds like she needs more help!

My husband, however, is not enchanted with the show. He says it's a little too fluffy for him. Maybe I'm in the mood for fluffy because I'm watching it every night after I finish my word count, and if he complains, I have an easy response: Blame Ilona. It is, after all, entirely her fault :).

Audio snippet

The fabulous Tavia Gilbert will be narrating the audio version of Twice Tempted (releasing the same day as the paperback/ebook), and when she saw that I had posted a snippet on my Facebook page, she kindly offered to narrate that clip as well. So if you haven't read the snippet already, or you read it but you'd like to hear it as well, please click the link below.

Thanks again, Tavia!

A new look, some cool news, and another appearance

Hi, everyone. If you go to my website, you'll notice that background image has changed thanks to the design talents of the lovely Syd Gill. And speaking of new images, downloadable wallpaper for Twice Tempted is now available, also courtesy of Syd (noticing a trend? I can't design anything myself because i r tech dumb ;)). Go here and scroll down to the bottom of the page if you want your very own Fiery Vlad to adorn your screen.

While I was browsing the internet the other day, I saw that Once Burned had just released in Germany under the title Dunkle Flammen der Leidenschaft. I never know when foreign titles come out, so that was a pleasant surprise. A really pleasant surprise was seeing that it was in its second week on the Der Spiegel bestseller list. Danke schoen, readers!

Switching subjects, if you don't already follow me on Facebook or Twitter, then you might not have seen that I posted a snippet from Twice Tempted onto my Facebook page. Interested in reading it? Then go here. Note: You'll have to "like" the page first to see the snippet. Also, I hear from readers that it may not show up on your phone. However, if you're not a member of Facebook, you still should be able to read it as long as you're on a laptop/desktop/tablet. You will have to scroll past the giant photo of Vlad to get to the text underneath, though, so if all you see are his pecs, you haven't scrolled down far enough :).

Finally, I'm pleased to say that my publisher added another stop to my events in March to celebrate Twice Tempted's release. Now I'll also be at the Barnes and Noble in Cary, NC. To see the full list of my appearances, go here.

That's it for now. Hope you're having a good January!

How about a giveaway

Since my last post, I've been compiling new songs into a playlist for Cat and Bones #7, title Up From the Grave, releasing winter 2013. Thanks so much to everyone who made suggestions! It's easier for me to write when I have music drowning out other distracting noises, plus I've trained myself to have a Pavlovian response to book playlists: If every time I write, I hear the same set of songs, then hearing those songs gets me into a writing mode faster.

But enough about that. The subject line promised you a giveaway, so let's get to it! I have 10 mass market paperbacks of The Bite Before Christmas anthology up for grabs. In addition to my story featuring Cat and Bones (Home for the Holidays, excerpt available here), you also get a story set in Lynsay Sands' Argeneau vampire world called The Gift.

TBBC - Copy (2)

But wait, there's more :).

At the end of the paperback edition of The Bite Before Christmas, you get a sneak peek at a chapter from Twice Tempted, Vlad and Leila's next book, out March 26th. This is a pre-revisions chapter so there are slight changes in the final version (mainly more feelings from Leila about what happens) but what does happen stays the same *cue Evil Author I-know-something-you-don't-know chortle*.

Interested? Here are the rules to enter:

1. Send an email to jeanieneprizes AT gmail DOT com (obviously use the @ and "." in your actual email instead of spelling it out like I did to avoid spammers).

2. Make sure to include your name and the email address you want to be contacted at if you win, if it's not the email you're sending your entry from.

That's it. Contest is open to readers worldwide and it starts now and ends on 11:59pm January 16th. Winners will be announced on my blog the next day and contacted via email. Good luck!

It's that time again

First, my schedule for 2013 (so far, anyway) is now up. Click here to see if I'll be in your area sometime soon! And to head off the questions of "But why don't you come to [insert city, state, country, etc]?!" it's because I go where the conventions are or where my publisher sends me, and if I don't limit my travel to only a few places each year, then readers won't get new books. Some writers excel at writing while traveling, but I've never managed to write anything worthwhile when I'm on the road, so I have to plan travel around deadlines and that means I'll never hit all the places readers want me to come to. I hope you understand.

Second, I heard from my publisher that Arcs (Advance Reading Copies) for Twice Tempted will be coming soon. If you haven't seen the note on my sidebar, I already have a contest up on Goodreads for 10 Arcs of Twice Tempted. In addition to that, I'll be running some blog contests in the near future giving away more Arcs. If you're a blogger/reviewer and you want to be sent an advance copy for review purposes, I'm sorry but I don't have any to give you. I'm only sent a small number of Arcs and those go to contests. You can, however, contact my publicist at Avon and request one by emailing Jessie.Edwards AT harpercollins DOT com (obviously fill in the @ and "." signs in your email instead of spelling them out). Please note: Contacting Jessie isn't a guarantee that you'll get an Arc. Publicity only has a limited number of Arcs, too, but nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that.

Third, this is also the time where I do my usual request for music recommendations. As many of you know, I write while listening to music and I've run through everything on my playlists. I tend to prefer rock and alternative music, with a little pop thrown in for good measure. Some bands that frequently appear on my playlists are: Three Doors Down, Breaking Benjamin, Within Temptation, Kings of Leon, The Fray, Coldplay, Florence and the Machine, Vertical Horizon, Staind, Pink, One Republic, Adele, Sarah McLachlan, Smashing Pumpkins, and Seether. If you have any song recommendations from bands like these, please share them in the comments. You guys are responsible for over half my playlists with your recommendations, so thank you in advance :).

And finally, Happy New Year, everyone! Hope 2013 is treating you well so far.

Drive-by holiday cheer

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I'm back in town and trying to get caught up on my inbox, among other things. So far I feel like the inbox will defeat me instead of the other way around. Still, my reward for this valiant attempt is finding out that someone had sent me the video below. Check out Cat people vs Dog people.

Please note: Before any cat lovers send me hate mail, I’m a fan of felines, so while I don’t agree that all cats are this aloof (nor are all dogs so goofy), I still thought the video showing guys portray the stereotypes was hilarious:
