It's all Ilona's fault

It's no secret that I like to spend my downtime watching TV. After a day melting my brain at the keyboard, kicking back on the couch with the hubby and the furry children is my idea of a nice evening.  I also prefer TV series to movies, probably because I prefer reading/writing series books instead of stand-alone novels and movies kind of remind me of stand-alone novels (unless the movies are part of a series, of course).  Anyway, my friends and I chat about TV shows and swap recommendations much as we do with books. For months, Ilona Andrews has tried to get me to watch the show Castle. Since I don't have endless hours to bum around on the couch, I hadn't gotten to it yet, but earlier this week, I finally did.

Because I loved the TV show Firefly, I'm already a fan of Nathan Fillion. He plays the role of Richard Castle, a wildly successful mystery author who's pulled into a murder investigation after people are killed in the same manner that his books portray. Stana Katic plays Kate Beckett, the tough female detective who doesn't want a writer mucking up her murder investigation. I wasn't wild about the first episode - Castle was over-the-top egocentric (like signing fans' boobs instead of books) and Beckett was over-the-top I am tough and sexy but inwardly vulnerable! - but after the third episode, I was hooked. Their banter is hilarious and I like the cozy mystery aspect of the show. Plus, when the show gets something right about publishing, it makes this writer laugh out loud.

As mentioned, Castle is a charming, rich egomaniac who is so high up the Publishing Totem Pole that he plays a weekly poker game with Stephen J. CannellJames PattersonDennis Lehane, and Michael Connelly. Yet in one episode, he's hanging around Beckett's desk watching her do paperwork because he wants to hide on his release day. Most everything portrayed on this show is not how "real writers" live (I have never been asked to sign boobs! ;)) but this was so reminiscent of what I feel on every release day that I howled laughing. So was the scene later in this episode where Castle's mother calls to worriedly tell him that she was in a book store and no one was buying his new book. I don't know about other authors, but this has happened to me and it went something like this:

Mom:  It's your release day so your father and I made a special trip to the book store! Oh, honey, they had your books but no one was buying them. Don't worry, though - I had your father buy ten.

Me: *headdesk* Mom, why did you do that? I can give you some books for free.

Mom: We wanted to help with your sales. Do you think we bought enough?

Me: *headdesk, headdesk, headdesk*

Mom: *in the background* Bill, go back to the store tomorrow and buy another five books!  Jeaniene sounds like she needs more help!

My husband, however, is not enchanted with the show. He says it's a little too fluffy for him. Maybe I'm in the mood for fluffy because I'm watching it every night after I finish my word count, and if he complains, I have an easy response: Blame Ilona. It is, after all, entirely her fault :).

Rica I love Castle! Although I haven't been able to watch most of it this season.

message 2: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Castle is one of my favorite shows!!! They have started running back episodes on TNT in the evenings! I know the episode you are refferring to and it was hilarious. I however can not imagine your books flying off the shelves. I know I always scoot out on my lunch break on your release days to go get my latest "Frost Fix" as my husband has come to refer to my obsesiveness over Vlad and Leila and MOST especially Cat and Bones. Speaking of which Vlad and Leila are almost upon us!! YAY!!

message 3: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Castle has been one of my favorite shows since its start and I too have been watching the reruns on TNT. Yeah, I know its not always realistic, I mean come on, what police department would allow an author to follow their homicide detectives around on a full-time basis and get involved in the cases? But, hey, I still love it anyway!

message 4: by Julia26 (new)

Julia26 My boyfriend and I have also started watching Castle, recently!! It's quite fun and we love all kind of crime anyway.

message 5: by Jess (new)

Jess McHenry I love anything Nathan Fillion is in.

message 6: by Susan (new)

Susan I not only love the show, but I have started reading the Richard Castle novels! There very lightweight but sometimes, that's exactly what you're looking for in a story! They are fun, as well!

Pam Nelson I love Castle haven't missed one episode! Very happy to hear you became a fan. :)

message 9: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I've been a Fillion fan ever since he was on Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place. He played Johnny who dated Sharon (Traylor Howard). Ryan Reynolds (Berg) was on the show too along with Richard Ruccolo (Pete), they played roommates. Suzanne Cryer was on the show too, she played Ashley. I still have every episode lol.

Levia I love how you talk about your parents. It brought a smile to my face on a bad day.

message 11: by Malinda (new)

Malinda I really like the show Castle and watch it regularly (although I loved Firefly better). I have to say my favorite role of Nathan's was short but sweet as Captain Hammer from Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog! :)

message 12: by Rose Marie (new)

Rose Marie Omg! I lol'd so hard I cried at the headdesks! Thanks so much for the laughs! :)

message 13: by Amanda (new)

Amanda *headdesk* made my morning.

Will you sign my boobs?

Just kidding, but at least now you can say you've been asked.

I have to side with your hubby. Castle is a bit too fluffy for me too.

Mary Perry Not only do I love anything your write, now I love what you're watching :) I've been a Castle fan since the first episode--the theme song for the first season caught my attention and then like you, the banter kept me glued. The banter was the best the first season though. I wonder if they switched writers. Can't wait for Twice Tempted! Your fan, Mary Perry

message 15: by Jeaniene (new)

Jeaniene Frost Thanks to everyone who graciously offered to let me sign their boobs at my next event! I have to decline because - in order to be fair, snerk - then I'd have to sign male body parts, too. Since my name has 13 letters, that wouldn't work for most ;-).

message 16: by Sunny (new)

Sunny Ahh, parents. They hear only what they want to hear and I love them for it!

TiniTea Mmmm Nathan Fillion. I've had a crush on him since FireFly. He does a throwback of Captain Mal in a Halloween episode of Castle too.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I LOVE Castle! I've recently started watching it and went all the way back to the first season hoping to catch up. And yea I remember that one episode with his mother I thought it was so funny. :)

the *headdesks* too funny,lol
I love Castle too when I find some time to watch TV

message 22: by Geri (new)

Geri I always recommend "Castle" to people. It's a great show! Every time I watch an episode it makes me want to read another of my favorite book series, J.D. Robb's "In Death" because Castle and Beckett remind me a lot of Eve and Roarke.

message 23: by Jean (new)

Jean I LOVE Castle!! Nathan Fillion is awesome!!

message 24: by Nikki (new)

Nikki I love Castle. It's fun! I love the references to Firefly too. I loved the Halloween episode, And the most recent episode at the Sci-Fi Convention. With many references to Star Trek (and the Appearance of Johnathan Frakes as his #1 Fan!!!) and Fire Fly (That Joss Whedon show!) and other Sci Fi shows...LOL!

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll have to start watching the show now ... my wife is very ho hum about so many things; sometimes it's just good to grab something and say, "HA!" when she's passing, grimace en que. "Terrible isn't it? I LOVE this show!"
Will she in her consternation flee ("The thought of you makes the air stink, you know?"), or will she ... grin? Oh dear.

message 26: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Robertson I love Castle too! I've been watching for the past 2 years. Nathan Fillion is so likable how could anyone not like him?

LOL, you could always sign with inicials or make the letters very small...
Castle is one of my fav shoes, too...althought I prefer to read than watch TV.

Anne - Books of My Heart I LOVE Castle and I'm nearly finished watching Firefly. It is like books in that I love the banter - the conversations - just as much as the sex. Of course mainstream tv is not so much on the sex part.

I love your parents and the *head desk* ROFL.

Oh another favorite show of mine is Sons of Anarchy. I have been to meet Charlie Hunnam who plays the lead, Jax Teller, um, several times. I think every single time I have watched him sign boobs. And I've seen a pic where a woman asked him to sign her vibrator. Ridiculous! But this is at a motorcycle rally. They also have what is basically a "show your tits" contest. I liked the male pole dancing myself. I thought it was hysterically funny. I'm all about the humor.

message 29: by Alana (new)

Alana Abbott It is often fluffy, but that's one of the reasons I like it. I don't get into the more serious crime shows, and I often have to take a break from Castle when it's too serious. (Luckily, those episodes are few and far between.)

Also, your parents are awesome.

message 30: by Aleida (new)

Aleida Vale Castle is one of my favorite shows. I never miss it, for I DVR it every week. I have watched every single episode ever made. It all started because I loved Firefly and knew Nathan played the main character in this one. I love when he says things that have reference to firefly. I love this actor!!!
