I Actually Had A Comeback

I actually had a witty comeback today. I don’t mean later either. It wasn’t long after the situation where the comeback was irrelevant. No, something happened today and I immediately came back with something witty. You have no idea how rare this is.

There’s a shoe shine guy down on the 16th street mall who tries to be funny, but can sometimes be kind of offensive. A friend turned down a shoeshine from him one time and the guy looked closer and responded that he hadn’t realized those were ‘brokeback mountain’ boots, obviously not needing a shine.

Yeah, nothing pulls in business like homophobia jokes.

Anyway, I walked by that shoeshine guy today. I admit, my shoes need shining. With all the trouble getting ready to move recently I misplaced my polish. I think I know where it is and will dig it out to fix my shoes soon, but haven’t yet. It’s been icky a lot recently so my shoes would just have gotten messed up anyway, meaning they’d still need to be shined.

Anyway anyway, I walked by that guy and he said: “Whew! If your shoes look like that I’d hate to see your underwear.”

I immediately snapped back: “I’d hate for you to see my underwear too.”

Okay, so it wasn’t that great a comeback. Still, it was a comeback and I thought of it on the spot, in time for use. All in all, I’m still proud of myself.

I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Think Of Slipping Fake Self Help Books Into Bookstores

Apparently somebody has been printing fake self help books and slipping them on the shelves of a bookstore. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this. It’s genius.

Some of the selection includeSo Your Son is a Centaur:

Learn to…Dress Yourself!:

and The Beginner’s Guide to Human Sacrifice:

I’m sure many of you have heard about this already, but I wanted to mention this already. It’s good enough for me to want to be sure you know.

I Still Don’t Know What Poke Is For On Facebook

I still don’t know what poke is for on Facebook. I think it’s just ‘hi,’ but I’m not sure. I don’t poke anyone. Very few people poke me. When they do, I’m not sure how I’m supposed to respond.

Usually I just ignore it. After all, if I don’t know what it’s for and what I’m supposed to do in response, what other choice is there than ignoring the poke? If there’s another option, I haven’t thought of it.

As such, don’t poke me. I won’t know what you’re trying to do…and I won’t respond. If you’re looking for something in particular, just send me a message. You’ll need to do that anyway if you want me to understand because you will need to explain.

I just don’t get ‘poke.’

Really The Last One – “ALF: The Animated Series”

Okay, this is really the last one. Sorry, I used to watch a lot of cartoons. This one isn’t even that obscure, I just had to include it anyway. I just wanted to remember it for a moment and the discussion wasn’t complete otherwise.

ALF: The Animated Series.

I still can’t decide if it was great or horrible. It only lasted two seasons, and was only on at all because of the popularity of the sit-com.

Course, not that the sit-com was that popular by the end of things. Remember how they had ALF get captured by the government at the end because they were hoping there’d be a big protest? Remember how that protest never happened?

I Lied: “Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea”

I know I said I was done with the cartoons from the 80’s…but I lied. I realized that I couldn’t end this without mentioningSpartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea:

I really liked this show. I barely remember it now, but I dug it back in the 80’s. It’s apparently another one that might be getting a reboot, but that’s apparently been in the air since 2012 due to inability to secure film copyrights. We’ll see.

(At least this one has English subtitles, even if it’s in French.)

Last Obscure Cartoon: “Turbo Teen”

Okay, enough with the obscure cartoons (or what I think of as obscure). I decided to stretch this into a whole week, but enough is enough. Before we go though, one last one.

Turbo Teen:

Yeah, another one that only had 13 episodes. At least this one ran for a year between Sptember 1984 and August 1985. That beats Laser Tag Academy if nothing else. Not that beating that cartoon is exactly a measure of success.

Sorry, again I couldn’t find a full episode online for free…in English anyway.

How Obscure Is “Lazer Tag Academy?”

How obscure is Lazer Tag Academy? I remember watching a couple episodes. I didn’t remember that it only apparently aired between September and December in 1986.

Yup. Four months. 13 episodes. Guess it didn’t go over well.

Maybe You Remember “The Mysterious Cities of Gold”

I’ve been talking recently about obscure cartoons from the 80s, or ones that at least seem obscure to me for various reasons…usually because no one seems to know what I’m talking about when I ask. I thought The Mysterious Cities of Gold would be a good one.

After all, there were only 39 episodes made between 1982-1983, apparently shown in the US between 1986 and 1990…but then I found out that apparently the series got restarted in 2012-2013ish. I never saw anything about that, and maybe that’s only in France anyway. Regardless, I’m going with it. It’s obscure enough.

(Sorry that’s only the intro, but I’m not finding any old episodes online free.)

How About “The Raccoons?”

Let’s keep going with the obscure cartoons I used to watch, or at least the ones that seem like they might be more obscure to me at least. Up for today? The Raccoons.

I didn’t really watch this one often, but I do remember watching it. Looking up the info on it, maybe it wasn’t as obscure as I think. Looks like it was going as late as 1992, but did bet started back in the mid eighties. Maybe my Canadian or Disney Channel friends will remember it just fine. Maybe they’d have run into it more than me. We’ll see.

(I’m sure if it isn’t obscure then someone will call me on this.)
