Lance’s Updated Garage Shop

This is an update of my shop, which I shared a couple of years ago. I’m a hobbyist woodworker from Oklahoma. I have been into woodworking since 2011 and have been building my shop ever since. My shop is my 2-car garage, 20’ x 20’ with a 9’ x 19’ tandem nook in the back where I will have my future Split Top Roubo from the Guild. I like to be shop organized and I’m constantly thinking of ways to improve efficiency in my shop.I built all the base and wall cabinets in my shop and everything has it’s own place, so I know exactly where everything is. I keep my shop clean so all of the large tools are connected to a Laguna cyclone dust collector via 6” Nordfab ducting, total of 3 drops and 5 blast gates. All of my smaller tools are Festool which are always used with the Festool dust collectors. Half of my projects over the last few years have been shop projects and furniture projects for our house.

I look forward to what I can create over the next 5 years!

Andy’s Greene and Greene Desk

The design was inspired by the work of the Greenes with some additional inspiration from some of Darrell Peart’s creations. I combined the elements of various pieces to get a look that I liked. Like every project I learned a lot in the process. I found some techniques that I did and didn’t like. I spent a good amount of time building jigs with the thought that I might eventually try to sell one. One of the jigs allowed me to make the ebony plugs on the router table which helped speed things up a lot. In spite of a few mistakes, I am thrilled with the results. My biggest area of improvement is finishing. I won’t be building another piece this size without an HVLP.

The desk is made from African Mahogany with the exception of the plugs that are made from Ebony. The finish is General Finishes water-based dye stain with an Arm-R-Seal topcoat.

Larry’s Co-sleeper

I guess I should start off by stating that I am a slow wood worker and I really don’t work well to deadlines. I don’t like them. So, I got a call from my daughter a few months ago and she announced she was pregnant! Yea!! Later she asked me to build her a co-sleeper. To this I replied, “Huh?” So much Googling later, I finally arrived at some satisfactory measurements with my daughter and I began working on this co-sleeper. I wanted to go beyond the plain and being inspired by David Marks and Marc, I decided to do some inlay on top of a rather plain and easy project. I have never done inlay, but David Marks and Marc provide excellent tutorials on the subject. Well this began my slow descent into madness. Inlay is slow meticulous work and I’m a slow worker. Add to that the brutal Arizona heat and I was reduced to working about 3 hours a day in the shop before the heat got to me. I started off with some pretty big plans for all six sides of the co-sleeper but by the beginning of July, I realized I was going to struggle to get it done by the September 8th due date. So I cut back on the inlay, but still managed to get something on all six sides. The outsides with the trees was kind of fun to do but very time consuming. On the inside I put in some stars to form the big and little dippers, a moon, and the southern cross (a navigational aid in the southern hemisphere and a great CSN song).

I used walnut for the trees, satinwood for the moon and stars on the outside, quilted maple for the inside moon and yellowheart for the stars on the inside. I finished the project with lots and lots of shellac using a technique I learned from David Fleming (a master craftsman here in the Phoenix area). All the inlay was designed and drawn by me.

It was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing more inlay in the future. One thing I did learn was that butternut is extremely soft and difficult to work with when doing inlay. I don’t recommend it and I won’t use it in the future for inlay work.

I apologize for the photography. It is obviously not one of my strengths. I was on a tight time line and as it turned out, the co-sleeper arrived in Eugene, Oregon on September 1 and my grandson was born September 3. So I barely had enough time to get it out the door to the UPS office to have it arrive in time for the arrival of my grandson. The co-sleeper is located in a very small bedroom that made it difficult to photograph. However, my wife was able to get a couple of pictures and of course, I had to include a picture of my grandson sleeping on the bed…he looks dwarfed by the bed.

Das Dresser

I’m a 26 year old living in Boulder, Colorado. I first started in woodworking two years ago when I bought my first house and couldn’t afford to buy furniture. I dedicated a small corner of my basement to a miter saw station, next to the ping pong table, and slopped together enough construction grade boards to have a place to eat and to hold up my TV. Somehow I was bitten by the itch to try to do better and my miters-saw-station grew into my entire basement and my ping pong table was evicted. I went through 3 table saws in the first year realizing that each one of my craigslist finds, although better than the last, couldn’t produce the cut quality that I needed. At some point I found Marc and The Wood Whisperer site and began pouring through the free content videos. Some of my friends took notice as my skills started to develop and I sold enough dining tables to build up the rest of my shop. I also used some of the profits to join Marc’s Guild.

A few months ago I got a request from a customer to build a custom dresser. This was a whole different type of project, in terms of quality from what I had previously built. I’ve always struggled personally with slowing myself down and having patience to maintain the quality required for such an elaborate piece. I took on this job to prove to myself that I could conquer some of my own personal faults and step up my game to deliver truly high quality work. Before this project I had never cut a mortise or tenon or a reinforced rabbet. In fact, I had never even held a hand plane!

The construction of “Das Dresser” is based off of Marc’s Chest of Drawers, but has been dimensionally modified enough to cause confusion all along the way. The construction maintained Marc’s haunched tenons, web frame layout and center guide drawer slides. The case is made from walnut, the drawers spalted maple and the webframes poplar. The entire project is finished with 100% pure tung oil with a mineral oil/beeswax treatment on the sliding components (same as my cutting board treatment). The drawer knobs are from Restoration Hardware.

I’m not sure if I’m ready to call myself a woodworker yet, but I’m getting more comfortable with that notion. I feel like I really conquered some of the personal limitations I’ve always dealt with through this build and I’m really happy with the results.
