“You’ve got no wife, no girlfriend but many women,” Vasyl rumbled.Tony shrugged. “Sure.” Uneasily he wondered if Vasyl wanted to take him clubbing. He hoped not. Going out on the town with Vasyl was certain to be a bore.“It gave me an idea.” Vasyl strode to the door and opened it. One of Vasyl’s bodyguards pushed a girl into the room. Her long black trench coat looked incongruous against her purple hair and dog collar. She was carrying a guitar case and two large suitcases. Oh Christ! Tony thought in horror. Surely not!“She’s yours,” Vasyl said happily. When he snapped his fingers, the girl took off her coat hastily. She was wearing a black lace dress over a purple shift, violet tights and tall chunky shoes. She had a lovely slim body but it was shaking with fear.Tony shut his eyes for a moment, but when he opened them again, she was still there. This wasn’t a bad dream then. Even so, Tony felt like he’d fallen down the rabbit hole. Except that Wonderland was turning into Horrorland. “I picked her because she’s from your country, but if you prefer a blonde...,” Vasyl offered expansively. Tony made a swift decision, “She’s perfect.”
The girl looked over at him. Suddenly she smiled and gave him a surreptitious wink. Tony was startled by the change in her. The fear fled, revealing a lovely heart shaped face with huge violet eyes and a mischievous expression.“She’s yours to keep,” Vasyl rumbled. “If you get bored, tell me and I will swap her.” He leaned in closer and rumbled, “And if you kill her accidentally, call me. I can fix it.”“How very kind,” Tony said politely. “I don’t think that will be a problem.”The girl was looking at him now with a wide grin. But when Vasyl cast a glance at her, the smile faded and she swallowed nervously. Tony felt a stab of pity for her.Vasyl stood up, ready to go. “We are brothers now,” he said sentimentally. “My private contact.” He pressed a card into Tony’s hand. “We should have a drink soon.”“Sure, your brother has an office in the same building as mine. Maybe we can all meet.”Vasyl looked stunned and then laughed. “You’ve been checking up on us too?”“I like to know who I’m dealing with.”Vasyl gave him a punch on the arm that was certain to leave a bruise. “We’ll be good friends,” he said. “By the way, my people will be around to keep an eye on things. So don’t worry about being followed.”Tony lifted an eyebrow. “Oh?”“Just for a few days,” Vasyl rumbled. “Not everyone thinks you’re a hero.”“Shocking.”Vasyl laughed. “I do love that English sense of humour!”
As he walked past the girl, Vasyl mumbled something. When she sagged at the knees, Vasyl laughed and exited. As the door closed behind him, the girl exhaled. She looked like she was about to faintNow she’ll have hysterics, Tony thought with a sigh. He’d better call the ambassador to say he couldn’t make it.The girl took a deep breath. “Thanks ever so much,” she said. “Wasn’t that awful?” She had a light lilting accent that he couldn’t place. To Tony’s utter astonishment, she giggled. “For a moment I was petrified,” she announced. “But when I saw you looking at Vasyl like he was some sort of exotic bug, I knew you were alright. He’s a real horror, isn’t he?”“Quite.” Tony could see that despite her insouciance, her knees were trembling. “Come and have a whisky,” he said gently. She sank into the sofa with a sigh and caught sight of the bottle standing on the table. “Laphroaig!” she exclaimed. “And the Quarter Cask Single Malt too!”“You like whisky?” Tony asked. Instead of offering her a small nip for shock, he poured her a double. “Love it,” she said simply. “I spent half of my life in Islay, so Laphroaig is like mother’s milk to me.” She sniffed it appreciatively. “Water of life,” she announced. Tony stared at her. The sweet educated voice didn’t go with the looks. “I should introduce myself,” she said apologetically. “I’m Max.”

Review One Last Song by Kristi Cramer

One Last Song (The Boys of Syracuse, Kansas #3) One Last Song by Kristi Cramer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In a modern American cowboy country and western story, Kylie is the local girl who wants to make it big as a singer - and sexy hero Jax is so crazy about Kylie that he wants whatever makes her happy. So when Kylie is offered a deal that promises to put her on the path to stardom, they both jump at the offer. However, the deal proves to be a ruse and the two find themselves kidnapped and at the mercy of a mad woman.

This is a thriller written quite prosaically, so think Grisham and Turow rather than a passionate dark romance with lots of emo. I can see it as a screenplay as it has a decent plot and likeable characters, but I would have liked a bit more edge.

ARC received in return for an honest review.

Excerpt
Brendan stepped out of the bathroom just as they turned to enter. He was fully dressed, not that this surprised Jamie. Brendan smiled and ran his fingers through his hair, which was dark gold when wet.Jamie hooked his thumbs into his back pockets, aware this dragged his jeans down enough to reveal most of the snake tattoo. He stared at Brendan, daring him to notice. Brendan’s gaze swept over both men’s bare chests and he caught his lower lip in his teeth.“We wondered if you were ever coming out.” Tuck’s voice was teasing. “Looks like you’re all dressed up and no place to go.” Tuck sidled closer to Brendan and tugged at the top button of his outer shirt. “We turned on both heaters. You won’t need all these layers.”Brendan stood stiffly, allowing Tuck to unbutton his shirt and push it from his shoulders. If Tuck was aware of Brendan’s discomfiture, he gave no sign. “Let’s watch a movie. We can use your laptop.”They walked into the sleeping quarters. Having something to do seemed to ease Brendan’s anxiety. He went to the laptop and flipped open the lid. “I should check the weather too.” He sat down and began to type. His brow furrowed and he frowned. “Fuck.” His voice was quiet, but Jamie heard the anguish in it and glanced up sharply.Brendan looked from him to Tuck with a pained expression. “We lost it again. The satellite connection.” They were all silent. What was there to say? Jamie took a deep breath and exhaled. He was done panicking over the situation. When he’d cried, something he hadn’t done in years, it had somehow cleansed him, not only of his sorrows, but of his fears. Whatever was going to happen, he wouldn’t change it one iota by flipping out. What Tuck said was true, this was all they had. Today, this moment, this life, this was it. No dress rehearsal, no do overs. He looked from blond, sexy Brendan to dark, handsome Tuck and smiled, surprised that his calm wasn’t forced. He shrugged. “We know they’re monitoring the situation. They aren’t going to forget about us. It’s not like they could get through now anyway. We might as well relax and enjoy the time we have together, right?”Tuck’s expression eased, the worried pucker between his eyebrows smoothing. “You’re right, Jamie. Where’s that Southern Comfort, anyway? It’s kind of growing on me.” He turned to Brendan. “What DVDs do we have that we haven’t already watched six hundred times?”“Steve had the big collection.” Brendan paused, pursing his lips. “I actually have a few old movies you might like.” He moved toward his cot and opened his footlocker, rummaging through piles of rumpled clothing. He held up a DVD case. “How about this? A classic.”“What is it?” Tuck asked.“Lawrence of Arabia.”Tuck raised his eyebrows. “With Peter O’Toole?”“Yep.”“That’s a great movie.”Jamie, not familiar with the movie and barely aware of who Peter O’Toole was, perked up. “Who, Lawrence of Arabia or Peter O’Toole?”Tuck laughed. “Lawrence, though O’Toole was awfully convincing…” Jamie found himself more interested in the movie.Brendan popped the DVD into the laptop and turned it toward the sofa, their usual spot for watching movies. Tuck touched his bandage and made a face. “I think I should probably lie down, don’t you? Why don’t we set up the laptop so we can see it from my cot? We can keep this double bed setup.”“Yes, of course. I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.” Brendan shifted the card table so it was facing the cots, while Tuck winked at Jamie, who grinned. The situation was funny in a way, the two of them plotting to seduce the straight guy, everyone tiptoeing around what they knew was going to happen.Jamie still held himself back. He wasn’t going to push himself between those two, but he wouldn’t be a jerk either, playing hard to get. He’d just go with the flow and see where it took him. He busied himself with pouring portions of the sweet, strong liquor into the juice glasses. Tuck, meanwhile, rearranged the pillows so they were resting against the wall. The three of them settled in, leaning back against the pillows, their drinks in hand. By unspoken agreement, Jamie and Tuck lay on either side of Brendan. They watched the movie awhile, sipping their drinks. After their second round, they set their glasses aside and focused on the film, which so far, to Jamie’s surprise, was pretty good for something made forty-five years before.“Hey, ” Jamie observed. “That O’Toole guy actually looks like you, Brendan.”“You think so?” Brendan shrugged.“He does look like you.” Tuck turned from the screen to examine Brendan’s features. “It’s your wavy hair. And also the sensual mouth and the strong jaw line.” He ran a finger along Brendan’s jaw. Jamie watched, fascinated, as Brendan actually shivered to Tuck’s touch.Jamie scooted closer so his leg was touching Brendan’s. He dared to drop his hand to Brendan’s thigh. Brendan turned toward him, his gaze moving from Jamie’s hand to his face. Tuck’s hand appeared on Brendan’s other thigh. Brendan’s head whipped in his direction.Tuck’s voice was soothing. “Relax, Bren. We aren’t going to eat you. We just want to touch you. To explore a little. That’s okay, isn’t it? We all agree we want this, right?”“Yeah.” Brendan’s voice was soft. He allowed Tuck to push at his shoulder until he was lying flat between them. On the screen, Lawrence appeared over the top of a huge simmering sand dune, his white robe whipping in the wind, but Jamie stopped even pretending to pay attention.
He slid down beside Brendan, moving his hand along Brendan’s thigh to his crotch. Boldly, he cupped the inviting bulge, delighted to feel it harden beneath his fingers. He met Tuck’s eye and they smiled complicity. However nervous Brendan was, he wanted this.

About The Author
Claire Thompson is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has been writing for nearly two decades, and has published over 60 novels. She writes BDSM romance and non-con abduction tales, spanning both m/f and m/m genres.

Her love affair is with all things D/s (Dominance/submission). Her work began as a romantic exploration of the BDSM life style, and then veered somewhat to the darker side of fantasy. She loves delving into the dark psyche of a twisted mind, and gaining insight into what might motivate such a person to do what they do. She does not create all black and white villains and heroes, but rather strives to develop real, complex and flawed human beings.

Claire doesn't want to simply provide an erotic thrill or evocative description. She seeks not only to tell a story, but to come to grips with, and ultimately exalt in the true beauty and spirituality of a loving exchange of power. Her darker works press the envelope of what is erotic and what can be a sometimes dangerous slide into the world of sadomasochism. Ultimately her work deals with the human condition, and our constant search for love and intensity of experience.

Review Wicked Weapon by Cari Silverwood

Wicked Weapon (Dark Hearts, #2) Wicked Weapon by Cari Silverwood
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Very dark and seriously twisted.

In this second book, Zorie is learning to resist the mesmers thanks to her dark mentor, Mr Black, now revealed as Mavros. Grimm is around too, trying to learn mesmer secrets and falling for Zorie. However, the Zorie and Grimm are captured and Mavros can't protect them.

Can't say more after this because of spoilers, however, there is lots of gore, and some torture that I had to skip over. If Dark Hearts were a fight, I'd say this is the bit where the heroine is getting creamed and then rediscovers her mojo. There's less humiliation and a sense that Zorie now has a fighting chance. But if you're looking for a romance, forget it. Dark and twisted, Wicked Weapon isn't for the faint hearted.

It's well written, beautifully paced and the characters are superb. I liked Mavros and I was intrigued by Grimm's predicament and the evil mesmers are properly nasty. Living horrors. Zorie is a star; def someone to have on your side in a fight.

I'm dying to see how it ends but honestly, it's so dark that I'm thinking I'll read the third part with one eye closed.

Helpless, a dark romance by AJ Adams

Helpless, a dark romance by AJ AdamsA self-standing novelFirst in the Belial Disciples series
Fracas Macintyre has been in and out of trouble all her life but this time it’s worse than ever. In debt to a loan shark, she’s caught up in a war between the Alistairs, nicknamed The Irish Mob, and Belial’s Disciples, England’s nastiest MC. Kidnapped and at the mercy of Caden Winslow, Fracas is convinced that life is going to get very nasty indeed.
Caden Winslow is an ex soldier used to taking care of business. When an Alistair henchman steals his beloved Busa, he simply takes one of theirs hostage and expects a simple trade will solve the problem. However, Caden is about to be pulled into a war.
Note: Helpless is a dark romance and there’s lots of violence, but it’s also a love story.  It’s not a “lock her up and rape her till she loves him” plot so if you’re not sure, give it a go.
Excerpt I opened the boot, and at the sight of the girl, Crush began grinning. “Hey, is that for me, too?”“You can go fuck yourself!” The little tart blew up instantly. “You evil bastard, let me go!”“Whoo! I like her!”Crush is a man who enjoys performing to the stereotypical outlaw biker image. This time I could see he meant it, and so did the girl. She opened her mouth, spotted Crush’s cut and went very quiet. “You can’t have her. She’s my collateral.” I pulled her towards me, snapped through her ankle ties with the box cutter and threw her over my shoulder. She muttered furiously, but she’d stopped fighting. I could feel her raise her head and look over the crowd of gathering Disciples. She shivered and went limp. I guess she didn’t like the look of the party. Crush was still curious. “Collateral for what?”“Alistair’s man took my Busa.”“You’re shitting me!”
Helpless - more satisfying than chocolate!
