I have a side business when I provide software for online and in-person festival payments (entry/food/drinks). If you take the total revenue (or profit) for the year and divide by 12 I’m well over the $500/mo limit.

I currently do 3 festivals a year which all pretty much fell in my lap, I’ve yet to start any sort of sales/marketing due to being busy with my day job/life and not wanting to grow too fast…

Each new festival has new needs but I’m starting to get fewer feature requests and less I need to build for each new client which is nice.

Dave started a Facebook group in 2021 called Audience & Influence, now with ~16K members.

He shows at the 0:20 mark of the video that he’s generated $1.9 million in sales from “one of” his Facebook groups

Presumably the same group, since the revenue graph also starts in 2021.

Looks like Dave uses his group to provide free value to members, and eventually direct them to his paid training here.

I just use the same prompt window in ChatGPT.

This is less than ideal because the context window prolly isn’t long and its forgetting stuff.

Plus if this prompt thread goes away, hours of training it is now lost.

Reddit Just Had Its First Profitable Quarter, 19 Years After Launch

The Verge reports…

Reddit just turned a profit for the first time. As part of its third quarter earnings results released on Tuesday, the company reported a profit of $29.9 million, along with $348.4 million in revenue — a 68 percent increase year over year.

The company hasn’t been profitable at any point in its nearly 20-year history. Since going public, Reddit lost $575 million during its first quarter on the market, but it decreased that loss to $10 million last quarter and is now finally in the black.

Reddit’s user growth is surging, helping build momentum for advertising sales. It also has a new revenue stream in AI content licensing.

I have a love-hate relationship with Reddit

On the one hand it’s a great one-stop shop for finding real conversation about any topic.

On the other hand, Reddit has pretty much killed the thousands of independent forums and message boards that once populated the internet

There seemed to be one for every possible niche, operated and moderated by people passionate about their chosen topic.

I’m sure many of those people made a decent living from such forums as well.

But now Reddit has replaced them all

Worse still: it’s apparently against Reddit’s terms of service to monetize a subreddit, so those old-school forum operators can’t simply shift operations to Reddit and continue to earn a living.

Although that may soon change…

Simply Eloped is a marketplace site that connects couples with venues and vendors for elopements or small weddings

Founded by Janessa White and Matt Dalley in 2016, the business recently sold for an undisclosed sum.

They Got Acquired has some numbers…

The business brought in $40,000 in bookings in its first year, $300,000 the following year and $1.4 million in year three, White told Hampton. By 2021, she’d built an $8-million business, according to Bootstrappers.

I suspect that last number refers to gross volume

Unclear what kind of cut Simply Eloped takes from each booking.

Janessa also told Hampton in 2023…

To date, we haven’t been an incredibly profitable company but I can proudly say this is the first year we’ll be turning that corner.

They must have received a good offer to end up selling only a year later

And while marketplaces are a tough business due to the chicken-and-egg problem, it’s worth considering what other niches this could work for.
