Episode 8: Debra Lewis – Grab Your Bull by the Tail – Bring Out Your Best When Stressed
This is my birthday show and a very special one for me becuase of my guest. I like to reflect on all the blessings I have and one of them is the many freedoms I have been privileged to enjoy. Those privileges did not and do not come without a price. One of those prices is met every day by those who serve in our military. Putting their lives in harm’s way to protect our freedoms.
My dad served in the Army during the Korean War. Right up until the day he died his time of service to our country was the proudest moment of his life. The lessons he learned about leadership, success, communication and moving forward to achieve goals served him well in his post-Army career.
My guest today was in the first graduating class of women at West Point. She not only survived the hazing and outright hostility from the male cadets and staff that felt a woman should not be there she thrived and went on to get graduate degrees from Harvard University and a Bronze Star before retiring after 34 years in the Army as a Colonel.
On this week’s show we talk about how you can bring out your best when stressed, how to grab your own bull by the tail to break the cycle and the personal lessons that led her to the success she has today and even what her definition of success is. You might be surprised.
Deb Lewis brings numerous unique and varied experiences from her trail-blazing 34 year military career to Sunrise Aloha, the personal development adventure LLC she shares with her husband Doug Adams. They offer rich stories, tools, and helpful insights so many more can thrive in the midst of ongoing challenges, instead of becoming derailed in their personal and professional lives.
During her remarkable military career, Deb led three Brigade/Battalion-level commands, including a $3 billion reconstruction program in Baghdad and Al Anbar Provinces during combat in Iraq; the Seattle District, where she oversaw 850 employees responsible for constructing, operating, and regulating military and civil works projects; and the Philadelphia District where she led 500 employees responsible for the construction, operation and regulation of military and civil works projects.
Col. Deb also held numerous other key command and staff positions including the Inspector General for Washington State, as the confidential advisor to The Adjutant General, Washington National Guard; Senior Engineer Requirements Officer, Joint Staff, Antiterrorism/Force Protection (J-34), supporting the Joint Chief of Staff Chairman’s responsibilities before and after 9/11; co-chair of 220+ member worldwide team that produced Department of Defense facility protection standards; Company Commander, Fort Bragg during Grenada; Engineer Battalion Operations Officer and Executive Officer; Chief, Military Engineering Division, US Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) – responsible for treaty nations and US territories throughout the Asia-Pacific region; and Staff Officer, Congressional Activities Division for the Chief of Staff of the Army.
Today, Deb knows how to bring out the best in everyone, and is unafraid to challenge long-held assumptions to uncover the real truth about interpersonal relationships, leadership, organizational behavior, communication and project management. Related hot topics include: Live the life you’re meant to and love the way you want to; What high cost are you paying each time someone at work fails to honor you?; 4 simple keys to insanely better writing at work; Greatly reduce your risk from harm by learning these 7 Antiterrorism/force protection (AT/FP) considerations; Key ways new policies can help instead of hurt; How to make adversity work for you; The ‘ALOHA Way’ approach to life and love – make it easier to thrive in rapidly changing and uncertain times; Inspirational stories of military women; An insider’s perspective on women leading in combat; Pay attention to what REALLY helps; and Relook your team’s diversity to unleash far greater potential.
Episode 10: Marlene Chism – No Drama Leadership
Drama Queen. Hmm, wonder why we don’t have a phrase, Drama King? We’ve all heard the term. What everyone doesn’t want to talk about is how that person of drama impacts the workplace and the homeplace. Maybe that person is you or someone you know. Either way, recognizing how to defuse the drama can make a difference for everyone.
My guest today is a successful entrepreneur who, having moved up from factory worker to in-demand management consultant and speaker around the world has unique insights on stopping drama in its tracks. Her award winning book, Stop Workplace Drama is one of my favorites. So much so I quote her in my own book, What Would a Wise Woman Do?
Her latest book, No Drama Leadership is a must read for anyone serious about leadership. Marlene shared tips everyone can use to stop drama in your business and your life and how becoming a No Drama Leader is the highest aspiration a leader can bring to the table.
Marlene Chism is a consultant, international speaker and author of Stop Workplace Drama (Wiley 2011), and No-Drama Leadership (Bibliomotion 2015). Marlene’s passion is developing wise leaders and helping people to discover, develop and deliver their gifts to the world. From her unique experience of reinvention to her experience working with all levels within an organization Marlene has learned to speak three languages: The language of the owner, the language of the manager, and the language of the employee. Marlene takes the position that communication is not a “soft skill” but is instead a critical skill necessary for No-Drama Leadership. Marlene has a Communications degree from Drury University, and a master’s degree in Human Resources Development from Webster University.

Episode 1: Bob Burg – The Go-Giver and more
Laura Steward interviews Bob Burg discussing the questions he asks and all about applying the international bestselling sensation The Go-Giver to your life and business.
There are people you meet in your life, books you read and words you hear that permanently affect how you look at the world, the course of your life and your work. Such a person for me is Bob Burg. When I first read The Go-Giver, jointly written with the other amazing man, John David Mann, I had one of the biggest “ahas” of my life as I realized I was not alone in the world with how I viewed the world and it was OK to be fully me. Then I met Bob and we became friends and I learned that he walks the talk and is one of the finest people I have ever met.
What I’ve learned from Bob are these things, be true to yourself, when you live your passion the money will come and most of all that you can systematically get the results you want from others while making them feel genuinely good about themselves, about the process and about you. And oh yeah, not everyone will like you and that’s okay too.
Bob Burg is a sought-after speaker at corporate conferences and for entrepreneurial events. He regularly addresses audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 – sharing the platform with notables including today’s top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes and political leaders including a former United States President.
Although for years he was best known for his book Endless Referrals, over the past few years it’s his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann) that has captured the heart and imagination of his readers.
It shot to #6 on The Wall Street Journal’s Business Bestsellers list just three weeks after its release and reached #9 on BusinessWeek’s. It’s been translated into 21 languages, and it’s his fourth book to sell over 250,000 copies.
He believes his new book, Adversaries into Allies: Win People Over Without Manipulation or Coercion is by far his most important work yet.
Bob is an advocate, supporter and defender of the Free Enterprise system, believing that the amount of money one makes is directly proportional to how many people they serve. He is also an unapologetic animal fanatic and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Furry Friends Adoption and Clinic in Jupiter, Florida.

For over 28 years, Peter Verlezza has been the architect of technology solutions that make sense for medical practices, businesses and non-profits. His unique way of approaching challenges comes from a belief that it all starts with people.
In the early years, Peter worked at his family’s deli and catering businesses where the foundation of exemplary customer service was instilled by his family. The value of serving has extended to his professional relationships with clients as well. Peter internally asks the question, “Is this in the best interest of the client?” while remembering the old saying, “You can’t change what you have been handed only how you deal with it.” He approaches both of these with a sense of humor, charisma and genuine care for others – it’s become a way of life.
He is the author of 3 books, “Hassle Free IT MD,” and the 2 Amazon best selling books, “The Tech Multiplier,” and “The Business Owners Essential Guide To IT and All Things Digital.” Peter recently completed an audio series titled “Touching People In Appropriate Ways” a series that speaks to the importance of connecting with an audience.

It’s Okay to Grieve
It’s okay to grieve. At least that is what I feel. That doesn’t seem to be the case for so many others though. As soon as you start to grieve someone will come along and try to get you to shift out of it. Be strong for so and so. She grieves inside so you have to hide your feelings to make it easier for her. What would the deceased person tell you right now? Etc, etc. Have you ever experienced those or others?
Sadly, our society is uncomfortable around sadness and grieving. Today I told a friend who was trying to help me see the happiness in my dear Frankie’s passing that I wanted and needed to feel the loss today. Frankie was and is my Boston terrier who passed away last night in my arms. She looked at me with peaceful eyes and no fear and said, “I love you. Let me go. I’m ready”.
Now i had all sorts of fear amidst the thought that she is ready and i needed to let her go. I even felt guilt that I let her go. I fought it for a moment and then I felt a beautiful peace surround her and take her with them. I knew she was gone but I rushed to the vet to be sure she was truly gone and that she was no longer suffering. She was gone and her physical presence in my life was gone too. So sad, so grieving. So empty.
I want to cry and feel the loss. Another day I shall feel the joy or perhaps even in another minute. What is important about grieving is that we all need to honor our own process. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. The guilt I felt and that still tries to rear its little head is not real. I know that Frankie and God are looking at me and saying, “let it go. We are happy you went to the vet. That was for you and it is good. You loved and you are loved deeply.
My physical self is deeply sad today and today I have decided that is okay. Anyone you want to grieve with me today? I have a fresh box of Kleenex.
RIP Frankie. Enjoy your ice cream with Grandpa. I bet you can even have chocolate ice cream in Heaven!

There are 24 hours in a day and the average woman manages to fill them to the brim with activities. Sometimes that even includes sleep.
