Book Blitz for The Ghost Chronicles by Marlo Berliner

The Ghost Chronicles

by Marlo Berliner

Genre: YA Paranormal

Release Date: November 17th 2015

Summary from Goodreads:

***FINALIST in the National Indie Excellence Awards for Young Adult Fiction 2016***

Can Michael get to heaven before the devil gets him first, and if it means leaving Sarah is he sure he still wants to go?

Michael Andrews had everything – a loving family, a great girlfriend and a promising basketball career. That was before the accident that took his life. Now, he’s a ghost, wandering among the living, struggling to understand why he’s stuck. All he wants is to move on.

That is until he meets Sarah, an attractive young girl who died just as tragically as he did. The only trouble is falling in love and binding oneself to another soul is forbidden, for it may keep one or both of the souls bound to earth for longer than they should be.

To make matters worse, there’s also a danger in going too far with Sarah, because the “joining” of two souls in the afterlife is also strictly forbidden and they don’t know what will happen if they do go that far. Each time they touch they can feel the boundaries of their energies slipping perilously into one another.

Things get even more complicated as Michael learns he’s being pursued. Demons are after him because he’s a marked soul, a soul the devil wants very badly for some unknown reason.

So, maybe falling in love in the afterlife isn’t such a good idea.

THE GHOST CHRONICLES by Marlo Berliner is a YA paranormal with romantic elements and adult crossover appeal, perfect for fans of If I Stay and the movie, Ghost. The book was inspired by the legend of a haunting at the Angel of the Sea bed and breakfast in Cape May, NJ.

Author Guest Post

Since I’ve written a book about ghosts, I invariably get asked if I believe in ghosts. I like to say that I believe in the possibility that ghosts may exist. I think it’s important to keep an open mind about the unknown. I’ve always been fascinated with all the mysteries out there that we haven’t solved yet. Regardless of whether or not they believe in ghosts, most people could tell you at least one ghost story that happened to themselves or someone they know. I’ve even had a few unexplained incidents myself. Are all these stories and experiences mere coincidence, or is there a thread of truth here?

To me, the best ghost stories are those that portray spirits in a realistic, believable way. In order to get past the suspension of disbelief, we need to be able to see ourselves in their shoes and buy into the possibility that there may be something beyond this earthly existence. For this reason, one of my favorite films of all time is the 1990’s movie Ghost, starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze. The film was a tremendous commercial success, grossing over $505.7 million at the box office and was the highest-grossing film that year. What I think the film got right was to put us immediately in Patrick Swayze’s shoes as Sam dealt with the emotions surrounding his murder and ‘learned’ the ropes of being a ghost – how to move through furniture and walls, how to move objects using pent up emotions, etc. Who can forget the emotional scene where Sam moves the penny up the door and into Molly’s hand and she finally believes? In writing THE GHOST CHRONICLES, I wanted that same feeling of realism so readers could identify with the emotions of Michael’s predicament of being stuck in the afterlife.

Interview with Carol Riggs

What’s your writing ritual like? Where do you work, and do you listen to music?

I work really well at home in my “office” on my desktop computer; I don’t even own a laptop. Music can be inspirational before I write, but when I do the actual writing, I like quiet (or the patter of rain outside), because music throws off the rhythm of my words and sentences. I can concentrate better without any distractions. For my schedule, I get through my email, Facebook, and Twitter, and I’m ready to work. On a typical day I write about 700-1500 words, putting in 4-6 hours. I treat it as my job.

How long does it usually take you to complete a novel?

For the rough draft, about 3-4 months. Depending on what’s going on in my “real” life, up to 6 months. Then comes the important part: letting it set for a while, doing a complete read-through, and sending it off to my critique partners to shred. Then I revise according to their feedback. The rewriting timeline varies, of course, depending on what other projects I have going on.

What are you working on now?

BOTTLED is my second novel to be released, after my debut, THE BODY INSTITUTE. I have a third book releasing in October, a YA sci-fi called SAFE ZONE. The one I’m currently writing is a YA fantasy, a retelling of a French fairy tale. I’ve always wanted to do a retelling, so it’s exciting to be finally doing it. It has ogres in it and I’m half done. I can’t tell you any more, or I’d have to de-materialize you…

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Well, that’s not very often! but I love the beach, and I’m lucky to be less than 1.5 hours away from the Oregon coast. I have a college degree in art, but I haven’t done much drawing or painting or quilting or even fabric art the past few years. I used to do pencil portraits, but found it wasn’t creative enough; I felt too much like a camera since my style was realistic (representational). I like to walk rather than jog. I love listening to music, watching dance of any kind, and attending writing conferences.

EXCERPT:
As soon as I close the cabinet door, my whole body is chilled. I shiver, turning

toward the microwave to find myself face-to-face with her. Her dark eyes gaze into mine, her cold breath so close I can

feel it on my cheeks. My heart racing, I jump back, colliding with the counter

behind me.
What happens next is a blur. I feel a sharp pain in the back of my head and I am on

the floor. She stands over me, her tangled hair hanging down, covering parts of

her face while she stares down at me, her eyes wide and intense. I am unable to

look away from her, unable to scream or move or even breathe.
Suddenly, she is gone and the room spins. I can finally blink, and I try to steady myself

as the room finally settles. I am still on the floor, still in my kitchen,

except it looks…different. Mom’s mixer that sits on the counter is gone.

Instead, a wine rack sits in its place, and I count nine glass bottles resting

inside of it. The walls are a dark brown color, and the lights seem dimmer.

“Aven?” I call out weakly, but the voice I hear is not my own. I try to use my

hands to push myself up off the floor, but I can’t; they are behind my back,

stuck on something.
I twist my neck around, trying to look at them so that I can figure out how to

get them loose. That’s when I feel the shooting pain go up through my arms, and

I realize it’s because my wrists are bound together with rope and it’s cutting

off the circulation from my hands to the rest of my body. Desperately I try to

pull them apart, but the fibers of the rope dig deeper into my wrists and the

pain is unbearable, so I let them go limp behind me, giving up that fight.
Calm down, I order myself. Breathe. Don’t panic. I ignore the throbbing pain in my arms as I squirm,

inch by inch until I am in a sitting position. Looking down, I see that the red

long-sleeve shirt and jeans I had on have been replaced by a white nightgown.

The blood stains around the collar and down my sides make my heart race faster

– even more so when I realize that they’re mine.
“Help!” I cry out, again surprised when the voice I hear is a little deeper than mine.

“Somebody please help me!”
“You’re wasting your breath,” a deep, masculine voice says from somewhere behind me.

There is a hint of laughter in his words when he says, “There’s no one here but

you and me.”
The voice is vaguely familiar, but I don’t have time to analyze it as a cold,

pressing fear weighs down my body. It is then that I realize that he’s right;

there’s no one here to help me and I am going to die.

About the Author
From the time she was old enough to talk, Katy Newton Naas has been creating characters and telling stories. As a child, they sometimes got her into trouble. She knew she wanted to write books when she won a Young Author’s competition as a second-grader for her short story titled, “The Grape Pie.” (Don’t let its tasty title fool you – it was actually a sad little tale!)Katy devoured books as a child and young adult, always doing chores and odd jobs in order to make enough money to buy more of them. Though she continues to age, her true literature love is and has always been children’s and young adult fiction.

Katy currently teaches middle school reading and high school English in southern Illinois, as well as children’s church. She graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale with a bachelor’s degree in English Education and a master’s degree in Reading and Language Studies. She enjoys her life out in the country with her husband, her sweet and rowdy young son (soon to be SONS – her second little boy is due any day!), and all her four-legged kids: Shakespeare, Poe, Morgi, Cappy, Ana, and Gray.

She loves creating both realistic and futuristic stories about kids, tweens, and teens, and feels so fortunate to get to work with them every day as a teacher.

Tia Mercury was a freshman in high school and had her first serious crush – on a senior who wouldn’t touch her. At least not until she turned eighteen.

Clinton Daniels was not your everyday teenage boy, and because his tougher-than-nails father wouldn’t let him forget it, Clinton became a loner. And learned to distrust everyone.

Until he met Tia.

She was sweet, she was funny, and she knew nothing about good music. It was the nineteen-eighties for goodness sake – time to turn off that AM radio crap. So, while Tia drooled over Clinton, he was busy making her mix-tapes.

She was falling in love. He was ignoring his heart.

See, Clinton had a secret. But sharing it could cost him their friendship, and he was not willing to risk losing the only person he ever loved.

Naked and Far from Home is a serious story that spans a decade. A tale about unconditional love and what two people are willing to look past to prove that love.
