Cover Reveal for A Veil of Shadows (The Shadow Gate Chronicles #2) by Michael W. Garza

FAQ:
This series was in the draft phase for over a decade. I based the characters on my kids and as they grew and developed their own personalities I allowed the characters in the book to do the same. It’s been a labor of love and seeing it finally in print has been a wonderful experience. Every time I read through it I see my daughter and son on every page.
Ideas for stories come from the strangest places. I never sit down and say ‘let’s write a book’ there’s usually a spark that comes out of nowhere. It’s the littlest things that lead to the big ideas for me. I’m never in a hurry when it comes to writing so I’ll sit on something for quite a while and let it build until I can see an entire adventure from beginning to end. In that way, by the time I sit down to write I usually know exactly where I’m going.
As a father of three, time is always a challenge. Writing is a hobby for me. It’s something I’m passionate about but my focus is usually needed elsewhere. A majority of my writing is done in the quiet of a late night when everyone else is in bed. I take my shots whenever I can get them. I’ve been known to disappear for a short time here and there if I see an opening for a writing opportunity but a majority of the good stuff I get down on paper is done long after everyone else is snoring.

Michael W. Garza often finds himself wondering where his inspiration will come from next and in what form his imagination will bring it to life. The outcomes regularly surprise him and it’s always his ambition to amaze those curious enough to follow him and take in those results. He hopes everyone will find something that frightens, surprises, or simply astonishes them.

ROYAL REPLICAS Excerpt
“Hey there,” the man said as his thoroughbred stopped before me.
I reached over the fence and stroked the magnificent creature’s muzzle. “Hey there, yourself.”
The rider removed his sunglasses and riding helmet. “You must be Victoria.”
“Good guess,” I said, suddenly recognizing the rider from the hologram message received at the Ramsey estate. “And I presume you’re Prince Byron?”
He didn’t quite look like the clean-cut Prince Byron from the hologram, but it was definitely him. His dark hair fell in all directions creating the perfect mess. Thick stubble covered his face, his eyebrows bold, and his gray eyes smoldering, making him look at home with the brawny riders of the Outlands, not royalty.
“Guilty,” he said. His gaze on me was intense. “I’m not supposed to be here yet. I arrived early and thought I’d get in a little riding before cleaning up. It clears my head.”
“I know what you mean.”
“Do you ride?”
I nodded. “I do, but not today.”
“Oh, but you must join me. I insist.”
I knew I wouldn’t survive if I went out there. “It wouldn’t be proper. I’m dressed for our official introduction later this afternoon.” I held up my shoes dangling from one hand to reinforce my point.
“I can see that. And a very lovely shade of yellow, I might add.”
“Canary,” I said with a smirk, gaining a bit of confidence.
The intensity of his eyes on me only seemed to strengthen. I found myself leaning into the fence like my body was being pulled forward. His boot in the stirrup was only inches away.
“Okay… I do appreciate learning new things. Since I can’t convince you to ride with me, what else interests you, Miss Sandalwood?” Prince Byron asked.
“Do you know what ward I’m from too?”
“The 24th.”
“Did you memorize the basic information on all of us?” I asked.
“I’ve done my homework,” he said with a smile that deepened the dimples in his cheeks, giving him a boyish charm beneath the hard stubble. “We’ll soon see if it was enough.”
“Well isn’t this a pleasant surprise,” said a voice from behind me.
The expression on the Prince’s face had made no indication anyone was approaching until that moment; his gaze left me for the first time since the start of our conversation. I turned and saw Constance ten yards away, approaching fast.
“It seems we have a frontrunner already stealing the Prince away for a little one-on-one time before he’s even scheduled to arrive,” she said, stopping beside me and linking an elbow with mine. “Isn’t my sister super cute in yellow? She’s like a perfect little doll I could set on a shelf and stare upon for hours.”
“Canary,” Prince Byron said, giving me a knowing grin.
“I beg your pardon?” Constance lay her head on my shoulder, staring longingly up at her possible prize.
“The shade of yellow is canary,” he clarified.
“And I see you’re more than an Adonis—knowledgeable, worldly and wise.”
“Not as much as your sister here.”
Constance lifted her head and gave me a sidelong glance, seemingly deciding how to take the comment. She turned her attention back to him. “I also love to ride. Would you like company out there?”
“I wouldn’t want to mess up your dress or your hair or anything else when you’re so perfectly put together,” the Prince said.
“Don’t be silly. I have plenty more dresses in my closet and an assistant to fix any errant strand of hair before our official meet-and-greet. I want to take advantage of all the time we have together. It will go by in the blink of an eye. Would you like a riding partner?”
“I’d love one,” he said.
She offered him her hand and he shook it.
“I’ll meet you at the stables and help you get set up.”
“I’m so excited!” she squealed.
I forcefully took my arm back from the snake beside me.
“It was a pleasure meeting you, Miss Victoria Sandalwood. I’ll see you inside later,” Prince Byron said, strapping on his helmet, sliding on his sunglasses, and riding off toward the stables.
“Yes, you will,” I said, more to myself than him. I should have pushed through the pain and joined him in the field when I had the chance since it literally hurt to watch him ride away.
Constance grabbed my upper arm and gripped it tightly. “Nice try, sweetie. You won’t get him. Why don’t you go back to the house and wait with the rest of the runners-up? The Prince is mine.”

About the Author
An escapist filled with wanderlust, writing is Haven’s responsible adult version of getting in the car and driving without aim. Reading and music are close seconds. She and her husband can often be found checking out their favorite bands locally or hundreds of miles away via road trips. Reading is something they don’t have in common, but he tolerates her dimly lit late-night habit.
Haven once made a living writing about trends in interior design but thoroughly enjoys that fact that people, unlike furniture, can fall in love. She especially loves when they fall desperately and into a forbidden kind of love. Haven also works as a graphic designer but considers Mom her most important title.
She has a slightly embarrassing fascination with the period of life that sits awkwardly between childhood and adulthood; the years when nothing is certain, lots of mistakes are made, falling in love is inevitable, and finding yourself is a struggle. For her it’s a fun place to escape to and she hopes her readers agree.

Read below for an excerpt from the book:
I spent the rest of the day filing paperwork for the funding process and preparing to open the library doors on Monday morning. I told Rose and Becca to spread the word. Tarryn had decided to move her smaller items in already, and she was asleep by nine the same night. It didn’t seem strange to me that I had a roommate; instead it made me feel comfortable. I never lived alone before, and I would feel lonely otherwise. Tarryn was quiet, but I knew in time she’d get used to me and I’d get used to her. We just needed to get to know each other first.
Once I was done with the paperwork, I filed the books that were left on the shelf from when Gram was still here. As I placed the classic books on the correct shelves, I felt a longing to finish reading my mysterious book in my nook.
So, instead of going to bed at a decent hour, I climbed into my cozy space and picked the book back up. I didn’t open it right away. Instead I inspected the outside for any sort of title. I found nothing of the sort. I flipped to the title page once more, trying to find my place, and that’s when I saw the word on the page. It was just a simple “The” typed out on the once blank title page. I ran my finger across it and realized it was printed in ink as if the press had done it. I was sure the night before it was blank, but then again, I was sure my dream about being with a man was real. So I wasn’t really a reliable source at the moment.
I found the spot where I ended with a dog-eared page. I absolutely hated doing this to the book and didn’t remember it at all. I usually had a nice bookmark, but this seemed to be the only thing to mark the page before I had fallen asleep. Running my fingers across the crease at the corner of the page, I settled back and started reading.
I woke up once again face down, this time I was in grass. I blinked my eyes and felt the blades of grass tickling my nose and lips. I pulled myself up and took a deep breath. I looked around and saw the fields upon which I had dreamt of the night before. I was back in England. I was dreaming the same dream. How odd.
There were times when I had thought I had the same dream over and over again, to only find out that it was my mind playing tricks on me. This was no mistake. I was, once again, in the same place.
“Emmeline, are you all right?” I looked up and blocked the sun from my eyes. The man from before was standing in front of me. “You … you disappeared. It happened so fast that I fear I cannot explain to you how it happened. Now you’re here once again.” He sounded really confused and, to put it lightly, so was I.
This dream felt way too real. It was exactly like before. So real and tangible that I couldn’t explain it even if I tried.
“I … I don’t know how I’m here again,” I mumbled.
He reached out to steady me as I swayed to the side. “You’ve been gone for days. I worried I was going mad, that your presence was one of my imaginings. I dared not to speak a word to anyone about it. I have to admit, Emmeline, I’ve been going slightly crazed since I saw you last.”
His hair was disheveled and he had grown a slight beard that only enhanced the sexiness of his strong jawline. His deep set blue-green eyes looked weary, and for that I felt awful.
My sudden disappearance had made him fall apart, that was apparent.
“I’ll tell you, I feel like I’m going crazy too. Trust me,” I admitted. “Can we sit somewhere? Out of the sun?”
“Of course.”
He held my arm and led me to a tree in the center of the field. Once underneath the large tree, I felt instantly better. I looked down at my clothes and saw that I was, once again, in my own clothes. This time a little better than before. I was wearing yoga pants and an old T-shirt.
“I can’t explain how or why I’m here. Hell, I don’t even know your name, but I’m here again and I’m beginning to think that this isn’t a dream. That I’m really here, with you,” I said as I touched his arm. “I’m not from … here.”
I didn’t know how to explain it to him, but I did the best any girl who was somehow traveling through time could. I didn’t have answers or explanations, but I had a gut feeling.
“I’m from a different time as you. As you can tell by my lovely clothing, I’m not from 1893.”
He placed his fingers on my lips, stopping me, while shaking his head.
“This isn’t right, Emmeline. Trickery at a time like this isn’t fair,” he said as he stood up fast. “I am leaving soon. I shall not have you doing this to me.”
My mouth fell open in shock and I stood. “Do something to you? Listen here, buddy, I didn’t ask for this. I sat down to read a book and then boom, I’m stuck in England with a stranger.”
I pointed at myself. “Look at me. Do I really look like I belong here?”
He looked at my clothing and up to my hair, and I could see his cheeks redden.
“You are dressed very indecent, I suppose. No woman I’ve ever met wears trousers. Nor do they wear clothing that fitting.”
I laughed. He thought this was indecent, he should see some of the dresses I had worn to parties. They were nothing like the dresses he was used to seeing on a woman. We absolutely didn’t dress ladylike anymore. My sexy little black dress that currently hung in my closet would definitely shock some of the people of this era for sure.
“I don’t know why I’m here. I’m absolutely not trying to, I don’t know, hurt you or anything. I don’t know how to go home.” I slumped back against the tree. “I wish that I could prove to you that I’m not lying to you, but I cannot. You’ll have to just believe me, I guess.” It was as simple as that. He could either believe this bat-shit crazy explanation or not. One way or another, I didn’t care. I just wanted to go home.
“I don’t know why, Emmeline, but I feel as if I should say that I do believe you.” He ran a hand through his thick hair, mussing it up. “I just don’t know how else to explain your abrupt presence. One minute you are here and the next you’re disappearing into thin air. I read many books on fiction, so I suppose it could be true.”
“Well, I may know someone who knows something. She works for the lucky bastard that owns that house,” I told him pointing to the house where Nancy was the last time I saw her. She was probably cooking something again for her master.
He smiled. “That house?”
“Yes. Her name is Nancy.”
“Ah. Nancy. And who is this Nancy woman you speak of?” He continued to smile as if this was a joke, but I ignored it.
“She’s a cook. I met her on my last visit here,” I explained. “She’s not the nicest person I’ve ever met, but I think she has some answers.”
“I must argue that Miss Nancy is more than a cook. She’s also the lady upon with which I trust my household while I’m gone. She’s more of an aunt than a housekeeper,” he said as he took my hand in his. “It’s very nice to finally introduce myself to you, Emmeline Bailey. I’m Jack Ridgewell or you may just call me the lucky bastard.”

Excerpt from Ahe’ey
Before she could process her actions, Morgan found herself walking towards the door, signalling the guards to follow her. Outside, the strange woman shouted.
“Where are the Ma’asai?”
“At the venue, in the Great Lawn in Central Park. We enclosed the perimeter and created some security checkpoints,” said the blonde man.
“You betrayed my direct orders, Bastian.”
“I received no such order my Sky. Please! We are already here. It’s just for a few hours. We don’t want another incident like the Met where he disclosed his skills to protect her. Let me prevent further—” The blonde man stopped talking as he saw Morgan and the security guards approach.
The woman wrapped her cinnamon-coloured cape around her body, fully covering her weapons and her unusual outfit.
How odd. They look like they belong in a sci-fi TV series, thought Morgan.
“Good afternoon,” Morgan said loudly. She flashed a theatrical smile, trying to defuse the situation. “Hey, nice outfits. Is this Comic-con weekend? I love Comic-con. Which character are you?” She looked up to meet the eyes of the imposing Amazon. The woman looked at Morgan with an expression of cold indifference.
For one moment, Morgan felt like she was looking into a mirror. She recognised the texture and the fire of that hair. How strange.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW with Melissa Chambers
Melissa Chambers
How did you come up with the idea for Falling for Forever?
Jenna was a secondary character in book one, and she was so full of personality that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her story! We learned in book one that Jenna was a contestant on the fictional America’s Newest Sensation, so I wanted to bring in a little backstory about what happened there. I thought it might be fun to put her back on stage in another talent contest for redemption from her America’s Newest Sensation loss, but I wanted to give her some super-stiff competition, so I set the story at a school of the arts (the fictional Nashville’s Academy of Creative Arts). For those not familiar with Music City, Nashville is a super-competitive, highly musically talented town, and the kids at this school are no exception. Jenna has her work cut out for her!
How did you develop the idea?
With my fabulous Entangled editor from book one, Heather Howland! She gave me the idea for the initial scene where Miles jacks up Jenna’s performance at the all-ages club. My other fantastic editor, Stacy Abrams, helped me dig deep for a reason these two couldn’t get along, which is where I came up with the idea that Jenna had stolen Miles’s audition spot on America’s Newest Sensation. She’s got a lot of redeeming to do, which I think is good for a polarizing character like her. I’m aware she may not be everyone’s favorite! But I adore her. If I could write only Jenna Quigley for the rest of my career, I think I’d be okay with that.

About the Author
Yuri Hamaganov lives in Moscow. He created the eight-volume GROND series as a present for himself when he was twelve years old. This was the story he had always dreamed of exploring, and when he realized that nobody had written it for him, he set out to do it himself.
GUEST POST
The author answers: “What is your writing routine?”
Practice makes perfect. It is extremely important for a novice writer to realize this simple and reliable wisdom. It doesn’t matter how big your talent is, no matter how good your idea is. Without practice – nothing will happen.
The GROND series will consist of eight novels. Four are ready, now I’m finishing the fifth, more than half of the work has already been done. And I reached this result only when I started working on my idea every day.
I live in a small town, next to a huge city. Every working day I go to Moscow to work by train, and then I return home. Two and a half hours there, two and a half – back. I used to spend this time without much benefit: I read, listened to music, slept, or just looked out the window. But then I started work on the first novel in the GROND series and realized that the usual routine must be radically changed, because I don’t have enough days off for my book. And then I wrapped this aimless loss of time in my favor.
Now I’m working on my book on the train, and you’ll be surprised at how much you can do there. The novel doesn’t write itself, it must be written. And then rewrite, edit, add new fragments, and re-edit. I’m going to Moscow and working on my book, putting on the headphones for a soundtrack to some sci-fi movie, a collection of old pop-music or rock radio. At work, I think about my book, and in the evening, on the way back, everything repeats. The screen of the laptop, text and music in the headphones.
Working on a book doesn’t mean writing a new chapter every day. Often I am engaged in planning – I state my thoughts on the new book in the text, I create notes and carefully explain to myself the logic of what is happening on the pages. I answer the question: why did these or those events occur, why this or that character behaved this way. Readers will never see these drawings, but without them the book would not be possible. You can also read the books of competitors in search of new, interesting ideas and watch the videos you need to work – anything for the benefit of the common work.
This is my writing routine – working on a book every day. Don’t wait for inspiration, there is always something to do. Write the text, read the text, edit the text, plan the text. Learn from others, get the information you need, develop a promoting strategy and again work on the text. The technique is simple, but reliable, I checked it on myself, which is what I wish for you.
All the best,
Yuri Hamaganov
