'BIG JOHN': A CHRISTMAS STORY (Well, Kinda)

The following account is a bit of a holiday tradition here at Phantoms & Monsters. So, I decided to dust it off and post. I hope you enjoy it.

This story was forwarded to me in 1998. I was told that it is a true tale despite the bizarre details. Even though it is holiday-related, I had some reservations since there is a combination of death and Christmas. Nonetheless, I receive many requests from other bloggers to use on their sites:

"Hello – I have a disturbing Christmas-related story that took place in a remote small town located on Mount Desert Island, Maine. My name is George and I have lived here all of my life. I hesitate to name the town since this story could carry unintended consequences for the residents. I know that the story is true because I was a witness to it.

It started in early December 1960 when I was age 12. Each week, my mother and I would walk to the local supply store in order to stock up on whatever we needed at the time. We didn’t have the car because my father used it for his work as a state employee. He was away from home for several days at a time. The walk wasn’t too far but it was a bit hard during the winter since we had heavy snow at times.

The store was owned by a wiry old man name ‘Big John’ Corneau. Big John was well-known in the area since he was a sort of legend after he had saved the life of a girl in the 1930’s who had been attacked by a rogue grey wolf. He would show the scars on his arms from the confrontation to the local kids when they would come into the store with their parents. Big John was also a storyteller – and I mean some real whopper tales, especially when it pertained to his personal history.

On this particular day, I was admiring Big John’s small Christmas tree with wooden ornaments that he claimed he carved himself. There were all sorts of animals, including bears, elephants, tigers, etc. There must have been 50 or so wooden ornaments. As I stood in amazement of the detail in these carvings Big John walked up to me and sat down in a rocking chair beside the wood stove. He lit his small black pipe, sat back and rocked away while watching me examining the Christmas tree. After a minute or so, John asked me if I believed in Santa Claus. I was surprised by the question but assured him that I no longer believed in the legend. John looked away, smiled and said “well, that’s good. I didn’t want you to be disappointed this year.” I was confused by his statement. What did he mean?

A few days later, my mother asked me to walk to the store for a few items she needed. My aunt had stopped over for a visit and my mother was busy with her so I made the lone jaunt. This wasn’t unusual since I was now old enough to do this on my own. When I reached the store, Big John was sitting in the rocking chair reading a magazine. He looked up and asked me if he could talk to me. I sat down on the small chair on the other side of the wood stove anticipating one of Big John’s tall tales. What he told me was more than I ever expected.

Big John’s demeanor started to change – whatever he was going to tell me was probably more serious than one of his typical parables. He looked into my eyes and said “something unusual happened last Christmas Eve.” He paused - then continued “I saw the dead body of Santa Claus.” Well, I’m not sure what my facial expression was but I can tell you what I was thinking – this old man was four quarters short of a dollar. Again he said “I really did see Santa Claus’ dead body.” I’m thinking to myself…why is he telling me this? He started to explain what happened.

Last Christmas Eve he was at home getting ready for the drive to his sister’s house on Christmas Day. He then heard a huge crashing sound in the woods near the house. He looked out the bedroom window but couldn’t see anything, so he decided to investigate. The snow was very deep all around the property and into the woods. It was a clear cold night and the moonlight was bright. Big John held a camp lantern in front of him as he made his way through the pine forest. Then he saw something lying in the snow. As he got closer he noticed a man with a blood-stained white beard and hair dressed in a tattered red-colored coat and pants. Big John knelt down to check the man’s condition. It was obvious that he was dead. In fact the body was terribly mangled though there was little noticeable blood. The body looked as if it had been dead for a few days. Big John explained that he reported finding the body to the authorities who soon retrieved the remains. He said that the police told him that they wanted to keep the death quiet until they determined the identification of the deceased. He agreed not to mention the incident.

I asked Big John “why are you telling me?” He smiled and said “because I have to tell someone.” He got up from his rocking chair, walked behind the counter and reached into a drawer. He walked back toward me and handed me a pair of wire frames without the lenses. “Take these….these belonged to Santa Claus”. I placed the wire frames in my pocket and told Big John that I had to get going because it was getting late. I bought the items I came for and hurriedly left the store – my head was buzzing all the way home.

For two days I wondered why Big John decided to tell me the story. I eventually determined that this was just another one of Big John’s ruses. I placed the wire frames in a shoebox and pushed it deep into the recesses of my messy closet.

On Christmas Eve my mother came home after walking to the store. I was sitting at the table working on a new jigsaw puzzle. I heard her asking someone on the telephone if they knew why Big John’s store was closed. By this time my father was home so he decided to drive to Big John’s house to make sure he was OK. After an hour or so my father returned and said that Big John wasn’t home but his car was in the driveway. He had also noticed smoke coming from the chimney so the fireplace was still burning. He decided to call the local sheriff and make an inquiry.

After several days no one had seen Big John. His relatives and friends were contacted but no one had any information. The sheriff was finally convinced that something was wrong so he entered the house. Nothing unusual was found – no clues as to Big John’s whereabouts. The next logical place to look was the store. Here is where the story gets fuzzy.

I had no knowledge of what the sheriff had found until my father told me a few years later. While searching the inside of the store, the sheriff and a deputy found a large mound of old rugs in the middle of the ground cellar floor. The deputy started to remove the rugs until he started to notice an unmistakable odor. Before he removed more rugs the district coroner was called to the location. What they discovered was both unusual and confusing. There were skeletal remains of a human body with a tattered red coat and pants. Well, I’m sure my jaw noticeably dropped. I told my father the story Big John had told me – eventually I told the same to the sheriff. I also retrieved the pair of wireframes and handed it over to the State Police.

Since that time I have not heard or seen anything further concerning this incident. I suppose there are various scenarios that could be created from the story but I just wish I knew what happened to Big John."

NOTE: at the time I received this story (1998) there had been no further information on Big John Corneau or the body found in the cellar. I did confirm (through a constable in Ellsworth, Maine who had acquaintances living nearby) that a situation with a few similar circumstances did occur in a hamlet in the northeast section of the island very near the Acadia National Park in the early 1960s. He was unfamiliar with 'Big John' Corneau or if the case was resolved. Lon

(VIDEO/PHOTO) 'FURRY ONE' BIGFOOT PHOTOGRAPHED on Navajo Reservation Near Ganado, Arizona

The witness 'Terry' stated that this photograph was taken on the Navajo Reservation near Ganado, Arizona. I have received other 'Furry One' reports from the same area previously.

"I am writing this because my aunt took this picture about 2 years ago in a canyon between the communities of Cornfields and Greasewood, Arizona on the Navajo Nation. She was out with her livestock south of our homestead and heard strange noises. She walked to the edge of this small canyon and saw this thing. It looked up at her. She is older so her only thought was to get a quick pick and get out of the area. She chased the sheep back and did not go back for a long time.

She did tell the family it and were loading up with rifles. But we were told to leave it alone as no one was sure what it was. I heard it was seen again a few days later but I tell you in this area of the Rez weird things are seen and heard quite a bit. I didn't think this photo would get its way onto social media, but I guess I'm not surprised either. We've been told stories about Steamboat, Greasewood, and Navajo Station but don't bother them. We try not to walk alone and we try to always carry protection if we do."

CHILD-LIKE VOICES Heard at Night & Huge HUMAN-LIKE FOOTPRINTS Found Later

A Pennsylvania man is out on his property at night using his new telescope. He started to hear, what he thought was, a child talking. Later, his daughter finds huge human-like footprints.

The following account was forwarded to me:

"This was not my experience but rather my cousin's. My cousin does not drink or do drugs, and until this experience was not interested in this Bigfoot stuff nor did he believe it. In the late winter of 2017, he received a telescope from relatives as a birthday gift. He lives by himself on a 1200-acre farm in North Central Pennsylvania in Northumberland County. There are 4 more people who live on the property, but the houses they are in are more than a hundred yards away from his place. It gets very dark at night, the only lighting is from flood lights on the property when there is no moon.

He was waiting for a moonless night to use the telescope. He set up pretty late, all by himself, in a folding camp chair with his telescope. After about an hour of looking at the night sky, he thought he had heard a small child talking. He became unnerved as it was coming from the direction of the nearby woods and it was very dark and he could not see anything. His only source of illumination was his phone.

This went on for a short time as he tried to make sense of it. His two daughters only visited on weekends, there were no other kids on the farm that day. He started to get scared, packed up the telescope, and headed towards his place at a brisk walk. He phoned me the next day to tell me what happened. I asked him what the voice was saying and he said he didn't know but could hear it very clearly and estimated it to be only 20 feet or so away. He said he couldn't understand what was being said. When I pressed him he said something like, "You know when somebody mocks a language they can't speak?"

Within a year of this, his youngest daughter discovered several huge human-like footprints in the nearby woods as they were out on a hike. He has a completely different perspective on this phenomenon now." N

THANK THE UNIVERSE For Small Miracles!

A Missouri man has a strange experience after his gas tank goes empty while driving home. Was this a time slip, a possible glitch, or something entirely unexplained?

I received the following account:

"I was driving from Branson, Missouri to my home. It was 54 miles from point A to B The gas gauge indicator hand was pointing at half a tank and the digital display indicated I have enough gas to travel about 274 miles on the gas that is in the tank.

On the way home, and 22 miles from the nearest gas station, my car started to sputter as if I was out of gas. My gas gauges showed I still had half a tank of gas (digital and analog). Then in an instant, my gas gauge went to empty and the digital display just read low gas.

Somehow I sputtered about 1/2 a mile down the road and found a little house nestled between a patch of woods and a pasture full of cows and across the road from a hay field that had just been bailed. I was 100% sure that I had never seen this house. Just as I pulled in their drive my car gave a death rattle and died.

Right there on their porch was a gas can with about five gallons of gas in it. I knocked and hollered for anyone. After about five to six minutes of waiting and hollering, When no one (but the cows in the field next to us) came out I used the gas (I didn't empty their can. I only used about a half gallon out of their five-gallon gas can).

I specifically made mental Polaroids of where the house was about several local landmarks because I fully intend to repay them (I felt horrible taking gas). Got the car going and made it to the gas station and then home. I would have left a note but I didn't have a pen.

Now for the next four days, I was looking for that house. Can't find it. There is no way I should miss it. I have traveled that road almost every day now for six years. The house was right between the Salem Baptist Church and the big organic mushroom farm.

Recently, on the drive back to Branson, in a moment of exasperation, I just hollered to the universe to thank you for this favor (small miracle?). Right after I thanked the universe, I went around a curve and the house was there on the left.

I was dumbfounded. It was at least five miles from where I knew it was before. Same two front doors, a small shed to the left of the house, the same chickens in the yard, and the same John Deere tractor by the shed just where it should have been. The house was now next to an old abandoned lumber yard and our local state representative's farm. My mind just went "Huh, that's a new one."

An important part of this is that my wife was in the car for all of this. when I needed the gas, when I looked for the house to pay them back for their charity, and when it reappeared. She was actually freaked out. We both mentally clocked where that house was. We both know where it showed up first, that it no longer was there, and that when it reappeared it was not where it had been.

So we just thanked the universe again, left 10 dollars and a thank you card pinned to the door). We then got the hell out of there. It was giving me fae vibes, not evil necessarily just somehow slightly menacing and vibrating with energy. So that is the most recent incident. Whatever it was, "Thank you, universe." F

Frightening UPRIGHT CRYPTID CANINE Encounter in Delta County, Colorado

I received a telephone call from 'Joe,' who had a harrowing encounter with an upright canine when he was 15 years old while growing up in Delta County in west-central Colorado. He had resisted talking about this incident until he heard of recent upright canine encounters shared with him by friends and associates in his current residence in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I have been keenly aware of the upright canine activity throughout the Ozarks in recent years. Upright canine sightings and encounters have become more common throughout Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi, according to witnesses who have contacted me.

Joe states that when he was a teen, he and his friends would hang out on the Gunnison River, not far from its confluence with the Uncompahgre River near his hometown of Delta, Colorado.

One late night in the mid-1990s, at approximately 12:30 am, Joe had arranged to meet a friend at their preferred spot along the Gunnison River. They had a routine of exploring an old abandoned factory that still had working lights around it. These lights would illuminate the river and shoreline. The river at this location was fairly shallow during the summer and could easily be crossed.

While waiting for his friend, Joe decided to kill some time. There was an auto parts lot/junkyard (still there) near the location that interested Joe. He has always been fascinated with automobiles and is currently an auto mechanic. He knew the man who owned the lot, which was guarded by a German Shepherd who was very friendly with Joe. Many times, the dog would wander down to the river to greet and play with Joe.

As Joe began to make his way toward the lot, he had to pass a huge downed tree that lay along the river shore. The end of the downed tree had a large bundle of exposed roots and debris from the river. As he walked by the tree, he noticed a pair of long ears visible from the other side on top of the downed tree. Thinking that was the German Shepherd coming to greet him, he started calling out to it. In fact, he tossed a few pebbles at it to get its attention.

Then suddenly, an unimaginable creature stood up. The light from the abandoned factory gave Joe an unobstructed view of this beast. He was witnessing a 7-8 ft tall humanoid with the head of a large wolf. The canine teeth were clearly visible, and its orange-yellow eyes looked directly at him. Joe said the eyes looked like distant lights coming from a tunnel. He was truly shocked at this sight.

Joe let out a scream. The beast reacted by grabbing the exposed roots and leaping on top of the downed tree. Joe's description was that of a sparsely haired bi-pedal canine with a wide muscular chest and human-like arms ending in human-like hands and long fingers with talons. The waist and hips were narrow, with muscular hocked legs extending down to long human-like feet. The beast was standing on the balls of its feet.

Joe instinctively ran toward the river and quickly waded across it to a chain-linked fence. As Joe looked back, the creature was on all fours, watching him from the far shore of the river. The beast was watching Joe but then directed its attention upriver. It suddenly took off running on all fours upriver at what Joe described as 'incredible speed.'

Later, he was told by the man who owned the auto parts lot that he should never walk near the river at night. His comments were, "There are many things out there that we can't comprehend.' He was also told by a shaman and elder of his family's tribe that Joe encountered a spirit of the forest since it did not attack him.

When I talked to Joe, his voice was noticeably shaky as he recounted his experience. His encounter has affected him throughout his life. Lon

Witness Watches Her Friend SHAPESHIFT INTO 7-FOOT-TALL REPTILIAN

A group of girlfriends are at a club together and dancing. As the witness was watching, her friend suddenly shapeshifted into a 7-foot-tall reptilian being! Her dance partner also watched the transformation!

The following account was forwarded to me:

"I have reached the point where I can’t keep it to myself and I need someplace to just get it off my chest so I can move on. I was part of a trio of best friends. We would hang out socially regularly. One of our favorite things to do was to girls' night out at the local clubs.

We always started at one of our least favorite clubs but it had one of those inexpensive fishbowl drinks so we typically began our evening there. This is where it happened. We had arrived and were about 30-45 minutes into conversation and drinks and we decided to hit the dance floor.

A group of 3 guys were seated near the dance floor and joined us once we started dancing. I was paired up with the youngest-looking one. He looked about 5 or so years younger than myself but we were having a great time dancing together. We danced and merged back together with the entire group forming a circle. Directly across from my dance partner and myself was my friend. She was laughing and smiling, dancing and enjoying herself, and then 'boom.' It was like a hologram or shifting picture. Like tuning an image. She suddenly stood well over our heads and the guy I was dancing with looked about 5’11" or so and she had a clear head and shoulders over him.

So this is the part that I have the hardest time saying without ridiculing myself for not having the answer. Please I have such a hard time saying it even to myself but she was a reptile. Like a standing scale-covered muscular human-like creature with a dinosaur/human-shaped head.

My dance partner and I both froze. I felt stuck just staring and willing myself to stop staring. I turned to look at him and the color had drained from his face. I felt so bad for the fear on his face. Without a word to each other, we both stepped backward, turned, and fled outside. He kept walking and completely left the club. He didn’t say a word just walked off. Left his friends there and was gone.

I went back inside because I thought, it had to be the lighting, shadows something practical after all I knew this person we were friends, best friends at that time. So I am clearly the one who is crazy and I needed to understand what just happened.

I sat at a table near the dance floor and watched the whole room, the lighting, effects, shadows, my friends dancing and I just told myself it had to be an optical illusion. A terrifying one but couldn’t have been real. I know this person, I am not prone to fantasies so I must have been the one to have my vision scrambled enough for my brain to fill in wrong information.

It unsettled me so I decided to not continue the evening out. I said goodbye to the other friend who was with us and I went home. As soon as I got home I searched the internet for anyone who had experienced anything remotely similar and I didn’t find anything. At that point, I did try and have continued to try to convince myself it was the room, the lights, the strobe effect, etc. that turned my best friend into a 7-foot-tall reptile person.

I avoided them for a month after that. The next time I saw them though I thought she would find it pretty amusing that I ghosted everyone because she shapeshifted. She didn’t find it amusing and seemed worried about it. Asking me what she looked like. Fair enough. I thought if my lunatic friend said the same thing to me I would have questions. (AUDIO RECORDING) Possible 'MINERVA MONSTER' Roars Recorded By Security Guard

"The roaring started. It started far off to my right side. So far, I could barely hear it. I thought it was a person messing with me from like a mile or two away. But it got closer SO QUICKLY!"

The following account was forwarded to me:

"In 2018 I got a super easy job as a security guard for a natural gas pipeline construction project in rural Ohio. This was outside of Minerva, home of the locally famous "Minerva Monster" story from the 70s or 80s. My job was to just sit at the entrance to this construction site to make sure no one sabotaged or stole construction equipment, which never happened so I mostly did literally nothing from 7pm to 7am.

There were 2 houses within a mile of where I was and most nights their dogs would bark all night in some kind of yelling match with the coyotes. It was just a constant that you could rely on. Dogs barking, coyotes yipping, and occasionally a cow or two mooing in between with a neverending chorus of crickets and frogs in the background.

One night in August, around 2am, EVERYTHING went quiet. It was the weirdest most eerie abrupt silence. It gave me goosebumps. I genuinely thought there might be an earthquake or something about to happen. And it stayed silent for about an hour and I was anxious the entire time. Then, the roaring started. It started far off to my right side. So far, I could barely hear it. I thought it was a person messing with me from like a mile or two away. But it got closer SO QUICKLY. Here is the recording.

This thing was vocalizing every couple of seconds and at some points, it sounds pretty pissed at something. The sound quickly crossed my field of hearing in about 5.5 minutes it went from out of earshot on my right, crossed in front of me, and then was out of earshot on my left. I cannot describe how FAST this thing had to be moving to cover that kind of distance in that short of a time. At its closest, the sound reverberated in my chest and literally rattled the windows of my car.

I've spent much of my life fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking in Ohio. I know every kind of sound of every kind of animal Ohio has to offer. The ONLY animal explanation I will accept for this recording is MAYBE a beagle or some kind of hound baying but even then I don't believe it I could just kind of see it could be that possible. People have tried to tell me this is a deer and I laugh at them. Some people think it sounds like a rusty gate or machinery but I don't really hear that and the way it reverberated is not how squeaky rusty sounds carry through the woods." J

Mother Describes Young Son's Scary CRYPTID CANINE Encounter at Camp Lejeune, NC

"He kept talking about a giant black dog that was stalking him, going from tree to tree where it would stand up, leaning against the tree to stare at him."

I received the following account:

"Hello, sir. My ex-boyfriend was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and after he and I split up I stayed in Coastal Carolina for a few years until the recession hit hard in the area in 2008. I packed up and moved back west to where my family was originally from. I loved it there. My son and my younger daughter still live there.

I can't go into fine details because it's not my story, but I think my then 10-year-old son saw a Dogman in the woods on Camp Lejeune while he and his little buddies were out playing one evening. He was so freaking terrified that I had to have our pastor come over at 11 pm at night to talk to him and comfort him. He kept talking about a giant black dog that was stalking him, going from tree to tree where it would stand up, leaning against the tree to stare at him. We had pet dogs, big hound dogs, so I couldn't understand why he was so scared. I asked if the dog had tried to bite him or had chased him and he said, 'No.' So, at the time, I had no explanation for why he was upset.

After hearing about Dogman these last couple of years, I began to wonder if that's what he saw, so I asked him. He is nearly 30 years old now. He says he doesn't know what I am talking about, which I find strange because, at the time, it was so traumatic for him, whatever it was that he saw, that he stayed up all night crying.

I've since listened to a couple of stories from Marines who claim they have seen them at Camp Lejeune, too. So I wonder." D

Experiencer Believes His GUARDIAN ANGEL Saved Him During UFO Abduction Attempt!

Then, suddenly a very stern and angry voice started to yell at them. I have never heard his voice before, and I have never heard it since. All he said was, “NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

The following account was forwarded to me:

"In 2007, when I was 15 I lived in Phoenix, Arizona. One night on the news they said to go outside and look at the colorful orbs in the sky. So everyone was going outside to look at the sky and see these “orbs.” It was a similar event to Phoenix Lights, which if you are unfamiliar were a series of widely sighted UFOs observed in the skies over the southwestern U.S. states of Arizona and Nevada on March 13, 1997.

So my sister, my dad, and I went outside with our digital camera and started taking photos of these UFOs, they were several different colors blue, green, pink, and orange. They were v-shaped and flew in formation like geese. We watched this phenomenon with our neighbors, everyone was outside looking at them. This would usually really excite me because my family was interested in UFOS and aliens, etc. But after looking up at the sky for a few minutes I felt extremely tired, like someone just gave me a sleeping pill. I told my dad and sister I wanted to go lay down in bed and they didn’t think anything of it so they stayed outside and watched the UFOs fly around.

I laid down flat on my back and got comfy and in the position I was in I could see the little orbs/UFOs flying around through a slit in my window blinds. I felt comforted by them and fell to sleep instantly. Usually, it takes me a while to fall asleep. I toss and turn a few times. It takes about 15-20 minutes before I’m really out. Not this time. I was out like someone drugged me, so quick as soon as I closed my eyes.

Then my attempted abduction began. I will never forget it. I was in a trance-like state, and I felt the calmest feeling wash over me and envelop me. I was completely at peace and I was awake but maybe not conscious or something but not able to move at all. I was paralyzed but it didn’t bother me because I felt so calm. Whoever or whatever was doing this to me started to lift me up out of my bed. And I felt the strong gravitational pull from above. I had no worries and accepted that I was being taken. I’m literally now halfway up into the sky, just being pulled up slowly by a beam of blue light. I was almost up to the UFO and could see a bright white light above.

Then, suddenly a very stern and angry voice started to yell at them. I have never heard his voice before, and I have never heard it since. All he said was, “NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! The anger, and assertiveness in his tone of voice really scared me. I instantly was out of this trance, and I slammed down hard into my bed completely wide awake like someone just dropped me out of the sky. I knew then that whoever or whatever was screaming at us, was trying to protect me. I was so intensely afraid, shocked, scared, and terrified. I immediately burst into tears because I couldn’t understand what had just happened to me.

I ran into my dad’s room in tears, shaking and crying and trying to explain to him what happened to me. I was really surprised by his reaction, he wasn’t even surprised or concerned. He calmed me down and told me it would be okay, and that strange things happen sometimes. He said to pray and thank whoever woke me up, put me back in my bed, and call it a night.

I have never had an experience or another abduction since that night. This experience to me indicated that there are forces who have much higher ability and intelligence than us, who are actively doing experiments on us, and manipulating our minds and our bodies in their favor. I truly believe in angels, and God. And I think a guardian angel was looking after me and didn’t appreciate the attempt to drug me and take me. He was very angry as I said. Anyways, that’s my story."
