Guest author Mary Meddlemore. Long life to stories
I met my now close friend Mary Meddlemore (well, Mary is a character, who demanded to write her own story and the author [...and although I know who she is I won't reveal it...you can ask her if you want] seeing her determination and her love of stories could but agree) through the group of authors I’ve mentioned quite a few times now, ASMSG (logo and website attached to my blog). We got chatting on Facebook, then started exchanging e-mails, we organised a joint giveaway in January…and keep talking…and exchanging ideas about promotion, and writing….
I’ve loved Mary’s dedication to writing, and particular her love of stories. She makes no secret of the fact that she loves stories and stories possess her to the point where she has to write them as they demand it. In the case of ‘Forever After: A Dimensional Love Story’ one of the characters in the story, Mary Meddlemore (and she is a character and a half) insisted in writing the story. And it is absolutely wonderful. I’ve reviewed the novel (I leave you the link below) and loved every minute of it. And I’m very happy to say that Mary/Martie is working on the continuation of the story. And she has very ambitious plans indeed.

Andrew slowly got to his feet. He felt ancient.
There was a sudden sense of motion.
She was next to him, next to him, but when he turned his head, she was in front of him and he could only see her hair and the elegant motion of her hips and shoulders. He could have touched her. She walked right through the huge glass pane next to the door and was gone.
“Are you all right, Sir?”
Andrew nodded. His legs moved stiffly through the door the attendant held for him. There was no need to ask if somebody else saw her. It was obvious that nobody did, because she was not real. He could not set a trap for her and he would never be able to talk to her. She was some kind of … apparition.
He walked back to the office. It was overcast and freezing outside and he was completely crazy.

Conrado Miret. Missing. Spanish Civil War, French Resistance and mystery.

Hi all:
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ll remember that I’ve posted on a few occasions about my mother’s uncles, Josep and Conrado Miret, and the research that one of my cousins, Juan Molet, is pursuing trying to find all the information possible about their fates and stories.
Both brothers were involved in politics (PSUC, Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya) in Catalonia (Barcelona) and Josep was in the government of the Generalitat at the time of the Spanish Civil War. When this was lost to Franco’s troops both brothers exiled to France where they continued their political task and got involved in the French resistance, reorganising the party abroad.
Josep was captured, sent to Mathausen and died in Florindorf.

Conrado’s (the one on the right) fate is a bit more mysterious. With his brother he got involved in the French Resistance against the Nazis, and it seems that he had a role protecting some important members of the militia and also intimidating the traitors. (I know he was a rugby player, so I suspect he must have been quite a strong man). He was in charge of the OS-MOI (armed groups of various nationalities fighting with French resistance). Amongst other actions they were involved in destroying two German military convoys, setting fire to a German garage, and attacking the factory SOGA with Molotov cocktails.
He was arrested in February 1942 during a fight and he disappeared without a trace. He was not present at the trial of all his colleagues, and it is suspected that he died tortured at the hands of the Gestapo. My cousin received a letter from the French Ministry of Defence where they could only confirm that he had been arrested and imprisoned in Fresnes ‘for terrorist activity’ on the 27th February 1942. The prison had not death certificate or other documentation about him.

Hola a todos:
Si seguís mi blog puede que recordéis que he publicado varios posts sobre los tíos de mi madre, Josep y Conrado Miret, y sobre mi primo Juan Molet, que lleva tiempo intentando compilar información sobre sus destinos e historias.
Los dos hermanos estaba metidos en política (el PSUC, Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya) en Cataluña, (Barcelona) y Josep estaba en el gobierno de la Generalitat durante la Guerra Civil Española. Cuando los Republicanos perdieron a manos de las tropas de Franco, los dos hermanos se exiliaron a Francia donde siguieron con su tarea política y participaron en la resistencia francesa, reorganizando el partido en el exilio.
A Josep lo capturaron, lo enviaron a Mauthausen y murió en Florindorf.
El destino de Conrado (el de la foto de la derecha) es algo más misterioso. Con su hermano se metió de lleno en la resistencia francesa contra los nazis, y parece que una de sus responsabilidades era proteger a importantes miembros de la milicia y también intimidar a traidores (sé que jugaba a rugby así que sospecho que debía ser un hombre fuerte). Estaba a cargo de la OS-MOI (l’Organisation special-Main d’ouvre immigrée) un grupo armado con milicianos de varias nacionalidades que luchaban con la Resistencia francesa. Entre otras acciones tomó parte en la destrucción de dos convoys militares alemanes, le prendió fuego a un garage alemán, y fue uno de los que atacaron la fábrica SOGA con cócteles Molotov.

Lo arrestaron en Febrero del 1942 durante una acción, y desapareció sin dejar rastro. No estuvo presente en el juicio de varios de sus compañeros, y se sospecha que murió bajo tortura de la Gestapo. Mi primo recibió una carta del Ministerio de la Defensa Francés donde solo pudieron confirmar que lo habían arrestado y había estado en la prisión de Fresnes ‘por actividades terroristas’ el 27 de Febrero del 1942. La prisión no tenía certificado de defunción ni otros documentos sobre él.

Hoy como todos los viernes tengo el placer de traerles a un gran escritor como invitado. Enrique Ríos Ferrer es otro escritor del grupo de autores indies y está teniendo un gran éxito con su obra ‘El juicio de Dios’. Primero una pequeña biografía para que podáis conocer a Enrique un poco mejor (y también es de Barcelona, como yo!). Es un hombre de lo más interesante!
Ríos Ferrer es autor de la novela “El Juicio de Dios“, un apasionante thriller donde se narra cómo un prestigioso bufete de abogados de Nueva York, se enfrentará a los mejores hombres del VATICANO, en la batalla legal más increíble de la Historia. Como ya expuse en mi blog; una novela muy recomendable por su originalidad y por su complicada trama, digna del mejor de los orfebres
¿Sabían que en la época del Emperador Constantino se efectuó éste Juicio a Dios? Los documentos de tal evento permanecen ocultos en algún lugar del Vaticano. Esta novela saca a relucir algunas de las intrigas que se utilizaron para preservar la fe y el poder de la Iglesia hasta nuestros días.
Una novela, cuya fuerza e intensidad en los diálogos no deben perderse.
En medio de una trama de tanta acción, agradecí especialmente la primera conversación entre el cardenal Noldo y el encargado de la Biblioteca del Vaticano, Roncelli; para mi gusto un ejemplo de cómo hacer un diálogo en el que se destila humor sin que el narrador intervenga demasiado.
No voy a adelantarles el final, pero a mí me satisfizo una enormidad. Pude respirar tranquila, y lo digo literalmente

Reviews: Too funny. Well worth the time to read this entertaining tale. A real treasure in my reading library. I thoroughly enjoyed this story.
Nobody Loves a Bigfoot Like a Bigfoot Babe by Simon Okill is a part comedy, part mystery, part who done it novel, that despite laughing at the title, I really enjoyed. I found that once I got into the book I could not put it down. The author did a great job in developing a story that at times seemed a little bizarre, yet at those time I would literally breakout laughing. The storyline was well developed and easy to follow. There were plenty of twist and unexpected turns which kept you glued to the story. I like each of the characters in the story. Simon Okill did a great job in building each character and making them easy to identify with. The characters were down to earth and believable.
I enjoyed Nobody Loves a Bigfoot Like a Bigfoot Babe by Simon Okill and recommend it to adult readers (due to mild sexual content). Read it and have a good laugh.

With almost unbearable excitement, she stared at him unzipping his jeans to urinate. She saw the steady flow of his pee on the ground and against the tree. The smell of his manly essence and muskiness aroused her.
She swished her hips suggestively, cooing, “Woooo-woooo-woooo.”
Behind the cover of the thickets, Olaaa placed each big foot to the ground with extreme care and walked towards her unsuspecting plaything. She stopped behind the leak tree and listened to him zip up his fly. Olaaa breathed heavily with excitement. She licked her lips.
An owl screeched, as if to alert Olaaa’s pale one, but the plaything was a little too happy on the juice to heed the warning of the wise old owl. He belched.
The chosen one called out. Olaaa thought he was calling to her. Olaaa sighed on hearing the pretty pale one’s voice. She sniffed the night air then sniffed her own pungent odor. She sniffed her very hairy, excessively damp armpits.
She snorted nasally with disgust. She smelled like a raccoon’s behind. She needed a good dowsing in the river if she was going to attract her pretty boy.
“Woooooo-wooooooo,” she called her plaintive mating call excitedly into the night.
The unfamiliar calling sound—which was so loud it seemed to be inches from his ear—which it actually was, suddenly warned the plaything. He reacted as if in danger. Before he could cry out, a big hairy hand, pink and calloused, came up to his face and covered his mouth, stifling his scream.
Olaaa was so excited she let out her mating call.

Sabios (?) Consejos y un nuevo video
Como sabéis soy psiquiatra y mi trabajo consiste en ver a gente, asesorarlos, diagnosticarlos, recetarles medicación si la necesitan y supervisar su tratamiento (ya que trabajo en un hospital). Los psiquiatras estudiamos Medicina y como cualquier otro especialista luego seguimos estudiando y trabajando en la especialidad escogida.
Aunque todos los médicos deben ser buenos comunicadores, eso es aún más importante para los psiquiatras. Tienes que intentar escuchar a la gente, sin juzgarles, e intentar no darles instrucciones y decirles lo que deben hacer, ya que en muchos casos es un proceso de auto-descubrimiento. Después de muchos años de escuchar a mucha gente y de observarlos a veces no puedo evitar dar algunos consejos generals e intentar seguirlos yo misma.
Aquí os dejo algunos de mis “sabios (?) consejos.”
Primero, sed amables con vosotros mismos y trataos bien. Muchos de nosotros nos juzgamos con dureza y nos castigamos por no ser perfectos. Siempre le aconsejo a la gente (y es muy difícil de hacer en el momento) que intenten pensar qué consejo le darían a alguien (un amigo o conocido) que les contara algo parecido a lo que me estaban diciendo. ¿Qué haríais vosotros? ¿Les diríais que son malas personas y que merecen ser castigados? Si la respuesta es no, entonces intentad sed tan amables con vosotros como lo seríais con los demás. Sí, por supuesto, aceptar vuestra responsabilidad, aprended de vuestros errores, y luego seguid adelante e intentad no cometer los mismos errores de nuevo.
Segundo, y muy relacionado con el primero, intentad obtener algo de perspectiva. Cosas que parecen enormes y terribles cuando pasan, al cabo de un tiempo no lo son tanto. No es fácil, pero si podéis aprender a intentar alejaros mentalmente de la situación y ganar una opinión más equilibrada os daréis cuenta de cuáles son las cosas importantes de verdad y cuáles son vuestras prioridades. No perdáis vuestro tiempo y energías en cosas sin importancia. (Un corolario de esto sería, no lo toméis todo personalmente. Sí, a veces os encontraréis a gente malintencionada que haga comentarios desagradables sobre vosotros, pero a veces nos tomamos a pecho y personalmente comentarios neutrales o anodinos y les otorgamos un significado e importancia que no tienen.)
Tercero. Cuando uno se siente bajo de ánimo a veces parece que estemos en un agujero tan profundo que no puede haber salida. Puede que no sea evidente pero siempre hay una salida y a veces no la podemos ver porque en lugar de mirar hacia arriba seguimos excavando y haciendo el agujero más profundo. Puede que esté muy arriba y no sea fácil de alcanzar pero hay salida. Y aunque no todo el mundo, siempre hay gente dispuesta a ayudar.

“Pearls of Wisdom” and amazing video.
As you know I work as a psychiatrist and my job involves seeing people, assessing them, coming up with diagnoses and looking after them (as I work in a hospital) and prescribing medication. Psychiatrists study Medicine and like in any other specialties in Medicine we then go on to study and work more in depth on our subject.
Although all doctors should be able to communicate well, that’s of the outmost importance in Psychiatry. You need to try and be a good listener, non-judgemental and try not to be too directive. After years of listening and observing people I can’t sometimes help offering some general advice and try to apply it to myself.
Here I leave you some of my “pearls of wisdom”.
First, be kind to yourself. Many of us tend to judge ourselves very harshly and punish ourselves for being less than perfect. I always advise people (and that’s very difficult to do in the heat of the moment) to try and think what advice they would give to somebody else (a friend, and acquaintance) if they were telling them about the same issues, problems, they are going through. Think about it. Would you tell them they were horrible? Would you punish them? Then, grant yourself the kindness you’d give others. Yes, learn from your mistakes, accept responsibility, but then move on and try and not make the same mistake again.
Second and very related to the first, try and gain perspective. Things that appear huge at the time are not so from a distance. It’s not easy, but if you can learn to try and step out of the situation and get a more balanced view, you’ll realise what the really important things are and which are your priorities. Don’t sweat the small stuff. (A caveat of this would be, don’t take everything personally. Yes, sometimes people might make nasty comments about you, but sometimes we might personalise pretty anodyne or neutral comments and imbue them with a meaning they don’t have.)
Third. When you’re feeling low it might feel as if you’re in a deep hole and there’s no way out. Sometimes it’s not evident but there is a way out and we can’t see it because we keep digging further down rather than looking up. However far up and difficult there are always alternatives. Not everybody is helpful but there are people who can help. You don’t have to do it all alone.

Autora Invitada: Carmen Grau. Amanecer en el Sudeste Asiático y Trabajo Temporal.
Hoy les traigo a Carmen Grau, una autora de Barcelona (como yo) pero que ahora también vive muy lejos (en Australia, nada menos). Las dos pertenecemos a un grupo de autores independientes del que recordarán a otros escritores como Manuela Herrero, Judith Priay y Eduardo Perellón.
A ella le gusta mucho viajar, y de hecho las dos obras que comparte hoy con nosotros son muy viajeras.
Aquí os dejo una pequeña biografía de Carmen, las portadas de las novelas y descripciones (que seguro que os enganchan) y por supuesto los enlaces. Y no os olvidéis de hacer click!
Biografía de la autora
Carmen Grau nació y creció en Barcelona. Es licenciada en Filología Inglesa por la Universidad de Barcelona y en Humanidades por Providence College, RI, Estados Unidos. Escribe en inglés, castellano y catalán. Ha viajado extensamente por el mundo y vivido en varios países, como Singapur, Malasia y Australia, donde reside desde hace once años. En el año 2000 emprendió un viaje poco planeado por varios países asiáticos y un año más tarde escribió «Amanecer en el Sudeste Asiático», el libro de viajes más vendido en 2012 y lo que va de 2013 en Amazon España. En 2004 escribió la novela «Trabajo temporal», también publicada en Amazon. Actualmente está enfrascada en otro libro de viajes que narrará su experiencia peregrinatoria a bordo de los trenes más legendarios del mundo desde Barcelona a Perth, Australia. También publica cuentos, relatos y ensayo en sus blogs: elblogdecarmengrau.blogspot.com, en castellano, y raisingboysinoz.blogspot.com, en inglés. Carmen compagina su pasión por la escritura y los viajes con el cuidado y educación total de sus dos hijos, Dave y Alex, que como ella, son autodidactas y librepensadores.
Amanecer en el Sudeste Asiático es algo más que un relato de viajes
El 2 de enero de 2000 Carmen Grau se despidió de su trabajo, familia y amigos en Barcelona y emprendió un viaje poco planeado, con lo puesto y la mochila a cuestas. A lo largo de siete meses recorrió Tailandia, Laos, Vietnam, Camboya, Birmania, Hong Kong, Malasia, Sumatra (Indonesia) y Singapur desplazándose en autobús, tren o barco. Se alojó en albergues y hostales, comió en restaurantes baratos o puestos de calle y compartió vivencias con mochileros de muchos otros países. Ante todo, se interesó por las gentes, la cultura e historia, la gastronomía y la belleza natural de los países por los que pisaba. Amanecer en el Sudeste Asiático es el resultado de esta gran aventura, que cambiaría su vida para siempre.

«Me enganché tanto que la leí casi de un tirón, en un par de días. La narración es fluida, y tiene cierto suspenso. Un viaje en velero, una protagonista viajera, intelectual y algo marginal…Los paseos de Anna por los lugares nuevos y sobre todo el final, su renuncia liberadora. La novela es interesante en otros aspectos. Por un lado, porque revela la tremenda frivolidad de cierta alta burguesía, que imagino existe en casi todos los lugares del mundo. Por otro lado, porque muestra un pequeño mundo que casi nadie conoce: la vida en un velero privado de lujo. Y principalmente, porque en esa pequeña muestra humana se reproduce una realidad global de las relaciones sociales y laborales. I met Shannon McRoberts through the group of authors ASMSG (I’ve mentioned them quite a few times before). Shannon is a very active member of the group and she’s not only and extremely talented writer but also a gifted visual artist and her wizardry with computer generated images is as legendary as that of her characters.
