Fore-edge painting was a common practice on fine bindings in the 18th and 19th centuries. Erotic fore-edge painting was less common, and usually masked with gilding as here. Sometimes it showed one view when flexed forwards, and a different view when flexed backwards. Another lost art now only to be found in collectors’ book shops….

On that day in 1401 (by Shire-reckoning), Bilbo turned 111, Frodo turned 33, they had one gross of guests over for a round of revelry and insulting, Bilbo went poof, and Frodo got a gift that came with some strings attached…
