Excerpt

By the time we get to The Rock Stop it’s already crowded with twenty-somethings, who all look eager to hook up with anyone who’s willing. I pass by two guys, who are already half-drunk and gawking at my breasts, before I hit the relative safety of the bar area. “What do you want to drink?” Cali yells over the loud Top Forty music. “Would I look too conspicuous just holding a glass of water?” Cali purses her lips at me. I tell her she looks like a duck when she does that but it doesn’t stop her. “I’ll get you a beer. You don’t have to drink it but I don’t want you to embarrass me or yourself.” “Yes, Daffy,” I tease. “I do not have duck lips,” she insists. “You do when you pucker them like that.” “I think you’re on crack.” “Just get the beer.” She waves in order to get the bartender’s attention but no such luck. He’s busy with a group of girls at the other end of the bar. “Hey, Babe.” An arm reaches over Cali’s shoulder. “I wasn’t sure I’d see you tonight.” David nods in my direction. “What’s up?” He never addresses me by my name even though he’s been hooking up with Cali for over a year and I’ve seen him dozens of times. David is the kind of guy I always hated in high school. His family has money and he’s never had to work a day in his life for anything. Cars, clothes, expensive vacations, you name it, and his parents have handed it to him on a silver platter. As a result he has a sense of entitlement that knows no bounds. No doubt that’s why he feels like he can treat Cali any way he pleases and she just keeps coming back for more. He runs his fingers through his short brown hair. I’m not sure whether it’s a nervous habit or if he thinks that his fingers are like some kind of comb but he does it all the time. David is a good-looking guy in a frat-boy kind of way. Cali says he played baseball in high school and he looks like he probably still plays sports. He’s not huge but he’s definitely in good shape. Cali met David at a frat party. Even though she’s never set foot in a college class she’s spent a lot of time at college parties. David likes to brag about the fact that he’s a business major. I don’t see what the big deal is though. I feel like business is a degree for people who don’t really know what they want to do with their lives. Not that I have any room to talk. Apparently I earned a degree for people who don’t really want a job. Before I know it, Cali and David have disappeared somewhere and I’m alone at the bar. I didn’t even want to come here in the first place. I have a choice. I can leave or I can order a drink. After the day I’ve had a drink is actually starting to sound appealing. As soon as the DJ starts mixing, nearly everyone moves to the dance floor. The bar area is now pretty empty except for a young woman seated at the far end. She glances up at me when I approach and gives me the faintest of smiles. She’s an attractive blonde with stunning ocean blue eyes. She’s the definition of a blonde bombshell. She’s got curves that would give Marilyn Monroe a run for her money. I order a Crantini and the bartender wastes no time filling my order. “Tough day?” the blonde asks. I nod. “Have a seat.” She waves to the stool next to her. “Thanks.” I climb onto the stool and take a sip of my drink. It’s strong and I cough a little as it goes down. “Russ likes to make them strong.” She laughs. “Maybe he thinks he’ll get lucky at the end of the night.” The bartender looks like he’s in his mid-thirties and kind of rough. He’s completely bald and built like a brick house. Definitely someone I would want to have on my side if a fight broke out. “Are you waiting for someone?” I ask. She looks a little too dressed up for the place we’re in. It’s mostly a denim crowd and she’s in a little black dress and pumps. “You could say that.” I nod. A cryptic response but I get the impression that she’s not going to say much more about who she’s waiting for. “So what’s your story?” she asks. I laugh. “Do I look like I have a story?” “You definitely look like you have a story.” “You’ve probably heard it millions times before.” She glances at her watch. I can’t help but notice it’s a gorgeous Rolex. The blonde doesn’t look that much older than me. I doubt she’s even twenty-five. It makes me wonder how she can afford such an expensive watch. When I look at her more closely, I notice she’s also wearing a diamond tennis bracelet and huge diamond stud earrings. Also very expensive. Maybe she’s like David and has a generous daddy with lots of money. “I’ve got a few minutes before my friend gets here. Tell me this story I’ve heard a million times before.” I take another sip of my drink. She’s right. Russ does like to make them strong. “I recently graduated from art school. I have a fine arts degree but no professional job and no prospects. My student loans are set to go into repayment and I have no way to pay them. I’m barely making ends meet on my salary busting my ass at the local coffee shop. Pathetic, right?” She shakes her head. “It’s not pathetic but you’re right. It’s a story I’ve heard a lot. Maybe not a million times. Half a million tops.” We both laugh. It feels good to laugh about it. At least for one night. She reaches into her purse, a pricey Coach bag, and pulls out a business card. I expect her to hand it to me but she places it on the bar between us instead. “I don’t do this very often but I feel bad for you so I’m making an exception.” She points to the card. “You can pick it up if you want to, after I tell you what it’s about. Or you can leave it on the bar. It’s completely up to you.” My curiosity is definitely piqued. When I glance down at the card I notice it only has two words: The Club followed by a phone number. “What’s The Club?” “It’s a kind of dating service.” I frown. “Do I look like need a date?” “No, but you said you need money. This is a special kind of dating service for extremely wealthy men.” I assume that’s how she got her Rolex and other jewelry but I don’t want to be rude. “Are you saying it’s kind of like having a sugar daddy?” She laughs. “That’s kind of an antiquated term but sort of. Most of the men in The Club are older and they have very specific tastes. Most of them want younger women but more importantly, they want women who will be there whenever and however they want.” I gulp. Then I whisper. “Are you talking about prostitution?” She gives me a little smile. “Prostitution implies that you’re with multiple men and they’re paying you for sex. It’s not like that. It’s more like you’re being paid to be one man’s mistress.” “Are they married?” She laughs. “Some are. Some aren’t. Does it matter?” “I think it would to me.” “Why?” It’s a good question. I’m not married. He’d be the one doing the cheating. “Do you mind if I ask how much money you’re talking about?” “That’s negotiable between you and the man who selects you. It’s called an arrangement. You can negotiate any sort of arrangement you want.” “Could you give me a ballpark figure?” “Usually between three and five thousand a month.” My eyes grow wide at the thought of that kind of money. My ten dollars an hour at the coffee shop, even with overtime and tips, doesn’t even come close to that. “And that doesn’t include all of the perks. A lot of the men like to provide their girlfriends with generous gifts in addition to their arrangement.” “You said a lot of the guys are older. How old?” An image of a geriatric using a walker crosses my mind. I’m not sure I’d be able to have sex with someone that old, if he could still even have sex. “The guy I have an arrangement with is fifty-four.” That’s ten years older than my dad. I can feel my stomach start to knot. Am I really considering getting involved with some kind of club and being paid to have sex with a guy who could be older than my father? The blonde leans in close. “Don’t let his age fool you. He can still perform in bed. And I only have to see him two days a week for a few hours. And my arrangement is non-exclusive. He doesn’t mind if I date other guys.” “I don’t really date that much,” I confess. “That’s even better. There are a lot of guys who want exclusive arrangements. Not as many girls go in for that.” I stare at the business card for a few seconds. Is this something I’m actually considering? I’m just not sure. There’s no doubt that I need the money but I’m not sure about having sex with someone I don’t even know…for money. “It’s really not that bad,” she insists. “I wasn’t sure at first either but you get used to it. And Alex can be a really sweet guy.” She makes a point of pushing the business card a little closer to me. “At least meet with Claudia. You can always back out if a guy selects you and you don’t like him.” I pass my hand over the card and hesitate for a moment. I feel like this is a pivotal moment. Like my whole life could change just by picking up the card. I take in a deep breath then grab the card from the bar. Now that it’s actually in my hand I feel like calling the phone number is inevitable.

excerpt
RAVEN STOOD in the middle of Ash’s living room. It was not what she had expected. The furnishings were sparse, and thick with dust. Nothing about the place spoke of the man in front of her. His intensity, and his impeccable taste, obvious by the clothes he wore should have been noticeable in his belongings. Instead, his house looked like it should be tore down, and the way he fidgeted, shuffling his weight from one foot to the other made her think he wanted to be anywhere but here.
In the kitchen, he put the kettle on to boil and pulled a chipped blue mug from a cupboard, plunking a tea bag into it. “I hope you don’t mind it black.”
The room seemed to grow smaller with every moment she watched him, his agitation rubbing off on her. The air was thick with dust and she coughed, wondering if it would be rude of her to leave so soon. Her gut twisted, now he was not paying any attention to her, she couldn’t shake the feeling something was wrong.
He pushed the mug, the string of the tea bag still hanging down the side, in front of her and she took the warm cup. Sipping her tea, she followed him into the living room, noting the fading yellow paint, and threadbare carpet, full of waxy-edged burn marks. Abandoned, she thought, was the feeling she got from the house.
The night was not turning out the way she had wanted it to. He flung himself down into the armchair and waved for her to sit. She looked at the couch, and hoped her tetanus shots were up-to-date. It sagged heavily in the middle and she was sure she could see the end of one of the springs poking out of the worn upholstery.
She wanted to go back to when the night had promised kissing, when she had been excited to be going home with this good-looking stranger.
Together they sat in silence, the clock ticking quietly in the background. She waited impatiently. The longer she waited the more frustrated she got. Her nerves frayed with how weird the situation was, but she could not bring herself to leave. He had not made a move to speak, or to look in her direction, as if he had forgotten she was there.
He watched her as she shifted in her seat, unable to get comfortable. The hardness of the worn-out couch was causing her butt to go numb. Having sobered up considerably and the warmth of the tea having dissipated, she stood up to leave. There was no point in continuing this night and her bed called in a soft and inviting voice.
His voice sliced through her. “This is more difficult than I thought it would be. I have to tell you something important and I need you to listen.”
“What?” She gaped at him, as she slid back on to the couch. What could he possibly have to say that she needed to hear?
A shiver swept up her spine and she tried, unsuccessfully, to shake it off. She didn’t go home with random guys, no matter how handsome they were, or how good they smelled, and now he wanted to tell her something. Her heart was beating hard with the sense of danger, but she was stubborn too, and she would stay until she knew what she needed to know, whatever it was.
She had trusted him enough to leave the club with him, so she could give him the benefit of the doubt. She jostled her legs as she considered whether she might need to run away. Having run track all through high school, she knew she was fast, and hoped with a head start she would be able to outrun his long legs. She stared at the door for a moment and then gave him her full attention, not wanting him to realize what she was thinking. He rubbed his hands through his glossy black hair, making it look even more styled than it already was.
“I don’t know how to start this…,” he said, looking around the room, at anything but her. “I’m just going to have to tell you and hope you will not be too difficult to persuade.”
She didn’t know if he was trying to frighten her, but every word added to the uncertainty of the situation, and had her struggling to keep her eyes from the door. She wished for the second time that night she had chosen to wear ballet flats instead of heels. She was slowly deciding heels were not a girl’s best friend.
He sat forward, knotting his fingers under his chin and resting his elbows on his knees, looking her over as if she were an exotic specimen under a magnifying glass. “I don’t want to scare you, but I can’t see how I am going to tell you this without you freaking out.”
“Just tell me!”
“I’ve been sent to…mentor you through your testing.”
She had no idea what he was talking about, but he was right, she was freaking out. His eyes told her he was worried about her reaction, but his words were having that exact effect. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I have no choice… You have no choice. I was sent to watch you until… It’s time Raven. You are one of the chosen, one of ours and now it’s time.”
What the hell was happening? She felt like she was on the verge of a breakdown. Somewhere between dancing with Tarra, and now, her mind had simply vanished. She needed the full story, and she was no longer willing to wait to hear it.
However, he continued to circle his point.
“Your father was my friend. I promised him that when it was time, I would be there to help you.”
She did not understand why he would bring her father into it. He could not possibly have known her father, Sam. He had died fifteen years ago, and she had never seen Ash before tonight.
She had at first glance assumed he was not much older than she was, and on second glance she would not place his age over thirty-five. Even if he did have a full nine years on her, she didn’t really think he would have been the type of person her father would have known.
She stood up, her hands automatically going to her hips. It was a stance that had gotten her through many difficult situations. “Whatever you are trying to tell me, you need to tell me now. I am two seconds away from walking out the door.”
“Right.” He stood too, towering above her, causing her to step back. “Let me get straight to the point then. It is my job to know who you are, to protect you, and to help you survive. Your father was an amazing man. He was a very gentle man but he had a hard job, one that I am afraid you will inherit in a very short time, and I promised him I would prepare you for it. Your father was an angel. He and I, we are of the same line. We are Takers of Souls.”
“Takers of Souls?” The concept was familiar and she searched her memory. “Angels of Death? Shouldn’t there be only one?”
She couldn’t begin to process his far-fetched story, but the fact he thought he was an angel of death scuttled her nerves. She could see it in his eyes, in the way he talked that he truly believed what he was telling her. Oh, God, was she going to die tonight?
What if he was stuck in his own fantasy world? How could he know enough about her to get her here, alone, in such a dangerous situation? Could he have been watching her, following her and had she simply not noticed? She tried to remember if she had seen him before, but she knew she would have remembered him. Anyone who saw him would have to notice him.
Her legs jiggled with adrenaline. Despite wanting to run, she felt compelled to listen to him, to stay and hear him out.
Every word he said sounded like the truth. It was only her brain, which kept her from believing, from falling under his spell. Her brain was a logical thing and would require proof. Something she was sure he would be unable to provide. She glanced at the door for the millionth time.
“Your father is dying, Raven, and even though he fell many years ago, his role has not been replaced. When he passes, that role will be yours. You are being called to serve.”
“Wait! What do you mean my father is dying?” Raven could not believe what she was hearing. Her father had died. She had been at his funeral; it was the last time she had gotten to say good-bye to the man who had meant so much to her.
She could still remember that day clearly. She had held her mother’s hand as they entered the church. Inside she could hear the voices of the many people who had come to say good-bye to her father. His coffin had been at the front of the room, and they had had to walk past the rows of pews to where her father’s body rested. Her mother had been broken as they stood beside the coffin saying their final good-byes; she had squeezed her mother’s hand, holding on as she watched her mother’s tears trailing silently down the woman’s cheeks.
She had wanted to comfort her mother, but didn’t know how to reach out to the woman who had shut down completely on hearing the news of her beloved husband’s death. They had stood silently hand in hand for a long time, staring at the man laid out in a black suit.
She had wondered why her father had been in a suit, and not in his customary uniform of denim and a T-shirt. It was the only time she could remember seeing him in a suit and it had looked so wrong on him. His skin had been pale, tinged blue and his eyes closed, and she hoped that he was only sleeping, although she knew, that he would never wake up. She had leaned closer and whispered to him, “Don’t leave me, Daddy.”
The tears had flowed freely then, dashing a mad race down her cheeks, as her mother pulled her quickly to the front pew where they sat silently side-by-side for the rest of the funeral. She hadn’t gone to the cemetery, although she had wanted to. Her mother had sent her home to prepare for the visitors that would arrive shortly after they lowered her father into the ground.
“My father died a long time ago,” she said.
“No. He didn’t.” His voice was quiet, and sliced through her like steel. Raven stopped and turned.
“Yes…” He had her questioning herself. “… he did.”
“Your father is an angel. Angels are immortal beings, and as such, he cannot die. However, to hide himself and you from us, he has had to siphon off his immortality, now he is getting weak and they will find both of you.” He was coming toward her, his hands moving rapidly as he talked.
“Them? Do you mean God?”
“No! I mean them!” He hissed, rolling his eyes heavenwards. “The Shadows. God is for humans—those that don’t know any better.”
“So my father is not dead?”
“Yes.”
“You’re lying. Why are you lying to me?” she snapped and took a step toward him, her hands balled in fists at her sides.
She did not want to believe him anymore than she wanted to go through the pain of losing her father a second time, adding to it the misery of finding out he had abandoned her all those years ago.
“Unfortunately, Raven, that’s not your choice to make. You are required for service. It’s time to face your past and your future.” He was stalking her across the room and she took another step back, the back of her knees hitting against the coffee table. There was nowhere for her to go.
“Why? Why should I?” She did not know why she kept having this conversation with him.
“Because you are the only heir your father had. As our leader, he must be replaced by his own bloodline, and when he dies that role will be assigned to you. You don’t get a choice in whether you accept it, only whether you survive it.”

Excerpt

Her breasts bounced, hips swayed, and that smile never once lost its glorious perfection. Total high-fashion model and girl next door rolled into one breath-stealing, hard-on inducing package. She coasted to a stop when her bare toes nearly touched the tips of his boots.

The sultry scent of honeysuckle wafted from her. Tilting her head up she said, “With more than ten years in beauty pageants, I know posing when I see it.”

Sweat popped out beneath his shirt and his dick swelled.

It wasn’t just the sensuality of her walk and pose, but the way she’d just put him in his place. “You win.” His voice came out low and rough. For days they’d been dancing around this desire between them. He could almost see the streaks of electricity arcing between them.

Her flawless smile melted, and her gaze locked onto his. “What’s my prize?”

Those three breathy words fried his brain until all that remained was fiery need. Logan buried his hands in her heavy, silken hair. “A kiss.”

Excerpt “Amber!” My eyes snapped open and I looked around wildly. Cold sweat beaded my forehead and my hands were shaking. My wooden leg wasn't next to me but my sister and Jacob were. Jacob held crutches and handed them to me as our eyes met.
“Thanks,” I muttered, forgetting for a moment that I didn’t like him. “Why are you screaming at me?”
“Because you were screaming yourself,” Rebecca said. “You must have fallen asleep and you started crying out.” I sat up straighter. Not this again I thought. The doctor said the pills would take care of it.
“How bad?” I asked. “What did I say?”
“I couldn't understand you,” Rebecca admitted. “But it sounded pretty bad. Is everything okay?”
“It's fine,” I said sharply. There was no way that I was going to tell Rebecca about the dream. “I'm fine.”
“There's no reason to be so angry Amber,” Jacob said. “Your sister is just trying to help.”
“I said I'm fine,” I snapped. “She's not trying to help as much as trying to get on our father's good side. She was always the goody two shoes...daddy's little princess. If her perfect reputation wasn’t at stake, she wouldn’t give a damn about me.”

blurb Our Second Chance by Author C.D. Taylor is a tale of forgiveness, redemption, and love. It demonstrates how the power of healing can strengthen the bond between family, friends, and lovers.
Emily Mills lives a life of opulence and luxury in Los Angeles but can’t shake the feeling that there is something more out there for her. It isn’t the picture perfect life her social circles expect and she knows something is missing. Unwilling to let happiness be a distant wish, she boards a plane to chase her dreams of becoming a lawyer in New York City. It doesn’t take long for her past to reappear with her former best friend from college, Jake Bradford. Knowing the feelings she’s held for Jake all these years, she still tries to convince herself that she isn’t worthy of any sort of love from him. Conceding to a fraction of her desire, Emily strikes a deal with Jake to become steamy friends with benefits. Soon her passionate bond with him turns out to be way more intense than she expects and she finds herself wishing her emotional scars didn’t rear their ugly head and destroy everything she’s worked for.
Can Emily forgive herself and those who had hurt her in the past to become the person she knows she can be? Or will the roadblocks in front of her cause her to make the decision to run like she’s been doing most of her life? Book 1 of this thrilling new 3 book series will leave you panting for more and cheering for second chances.
trailer Link: http://youtu.be/oXKYOFshJgA   about the author     clip_image004 C.D. Taylor originally began writing as an item to check off her bucket list, but quickly realized that it was something she couldn’t live without. She resides in the southernmost part of Illinois, right on the mighty Mississippi river. She enjoys the quiet country life with her husband, son and the many farm animals that make up the rest of the family. C.D. decided that farm life was just a little too mundane, so she started writing erotica to spice things up, so far so good. C.D. entered cosmetology school right out of High School and practiced the art of hair styling for 12 years until a back injury put a halt to that career. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found sitting around a table making people laugh with her witty banter and special brand of smart assed humor. She has always wanted to be a standup comic. She loves pulling practical jokes, dresses up in a costume every Halloween and believes that dancing is the key to a happy life (even if you aren’t a good dancer). She believes that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously, we will never get out alive anyway. More than anything, C.D. is a kid at heart, she doesn’t believe in bedtimes, eating everything on her plate, or having ice cream only for dessert. Her favorite quote is by Dr. Seuss…”Why fit in, when you were born to stand out.”

SYNOPSIS: Four years have passed since I left home, my parents, and my brother Asher behind – since I shut out my past. And Erin. Four years since I last saw her, since I heard her voice and held her in my arms. I’ve spent my time forging a path from woman to woman, from bed to bed; trying to find an answer. But I think I’ve lost my way. There’s no light at the end of the dark. No big surprise. I carry the dark inside me. I’m a bastard – branded as such from the start. I never give my phone number and address; I take my pleasure and don’t come back for seconds. No commitments; no promises and no happy endings. Yeah, I’m a bastard down to the bone and I don’t give a damn. But now I’m back in my birth town, the town I fled at eighteen – back to make amends to the brother I abandoned and watch from afar the only girl I’ve ever wanted. Hope isn’t a currency I can afford; I learned that lesson long ago. Yet when she looks at me and says my name, I can’t help but hope.

EXCERPT“Why, Tyler? Tell me why you left.” “I don’t wanna talk about it,” he grinds out. I want to bang my fist on his chest and slap his face. My fingers curl against the soft fabric of his T-shirt, and I feel his muscles clench underneath. “Screw you,” I whisper and I hope my voice won’t break and betray me. “That’s all you have to say to me? I’m not going to—” “You’re so beautiful,” he whispers. Shocked into silence, I stare at him. His gaze is moving over my body, a hot, silky glide that steals my breath. His pupils are dilated, making his eyes look black. I try again. “After all this time, I just want to know—” His hand hooks around my back, pressing me to his body, and he bends his head toward me, dark hair falling in his eyes. His mouth descends on mine, sealing the words inside. The world falls away with a murmur as he kisses me. I gasp and his tongue pushes inside, tangling with mine. He licks at my mouth, and he tastes so good – like dark chocolate and pepper. Familiar. Thrilling. Sexy. I want more. I slide my arms around his hips and kiss him back. His chest vibrates against me as he moans and then he drags me closer, until my breasts are crushed against his firm abs. A tiny voice in the back of my mind is screeching in protest – this shouldn’t be happening, we should be talking, explaining, finishing this off – but it’s drowned in the rushing of blood in my ears, the thundering beat of my heart. His smell, his taste, the feel of his muscular body, it all sends waves of scalding heat over my skin, through me, tightening the tips of my breasts, starting a pulse between my legs. I cling to him as I burn from the inside out; I desperately need him – need to feel him around me, against me, inside me. Everywhere where he’s been missing for so long. His hands move down to the small of my back, then lower, lifting my skirt. He swallows my moan of protest and slips a hand round the front, inside my panties. I gasp as his callused fingers touch me, slide inside me. Oh god, oh crap. It feels so good. He strokes me, rough and tender, soft and hard, until my body starts to shake. Pleasure rips through me, tearing me apart.

Book Description:

Working for Lucifer is the best job in the universe, until the day it’s not. Then you’re on your own, with Hell at your heels.

Ava, Sin of Greed, has had a rough week. The angel she planned to make a life with left her with nothing but a Dear Jane letter. Even worse, Lucifer believes she spilled Hell’s secrets to her ex, and her boss’s temper is notoriously apocalyptic.

For centuries, Dante kept his feelings for Ava under lock-and-key. The one time he pursued something more, he nearly lost her for good. Lesson learned. However, when he hears of her planned elopement, all bets are off. Not having Ava was a reality he could accept. Losing her to an angel is something else entirely.

Now, Ava, once Hell’s golden child, is fleeing for her life. When her old friend Dante shows up, her first instinct is to send him packing. But Dante is more than a friend—he’s the only other man who tempted her, and his fierce loyalty challenges everything she thought she knew about him. As Ava prepares to battle the devil himself, she can’t keep from getting closer to Dante…though she doubts her heart can survive another break.

Excerpt

Someone thumped her on the shoulder and sent her spiraling out of her thoughts. A jolt rushed through her body and everything went on autopilot. Ava jumped to her feet, formed a fist, and landed a blind punch in less than three seconds. It took another ten seconds for her scattered mind to piece together what had just occurred, and by then she was staring into an all-too familiar pair of crystal blue eyes.

Ava blinked. Hard. “Dante?”

“Fucking hell,” he cursed, cradling his nose and scowling at her. “What’d you do that for?”

“What the hell were you sneaking up on me for?”

“I didn’t sneak!”

Ava looked around, then waved a hand. “This is a graveyard, Dante. In the middle of the night in Nowheresville. You don’t just…I dunno, touch someone. You let someone know you’re there.”

“And here I thought getting your attention would do that just fine.”

“Not like that!”

“Next time I’ll read the fucking rule book.” Dante dropped his hands and sniffed. A small fleck of blood colored the space between his nose and lips, but other than looking a little swollen, he seemed otherwise undamaged. “If this is the way you greet your friends, it’s no small wonder the whole of Hades is after your sorry ass.”

Ava’s shoulders dropped and she rolled her head back, a long groan riding off her lips. “You know about that?”

“What other reason would I have to be… Where the fuck are we?”

“Mississippi.”

Dante offered a dramatic sigh, though something in his eyes told her he’d only asked for show. Even at his drunkest, he wasn’t the sort to forget what state he was in.

“Mississippi,” he muttered. “So that’s what that smell is.”

On the other hand… Ava straightened her spine and arched an eyebrow at him. “So…what? You come out here to make fun of the locals?”

“No,” he replied coolly, wiping the stray speck of blood off his otherwise pale, pristine skin. “I came here for you.”

Everything in her stilled. Though she’d heard him the first time, the words had a way of really sinking in upon repetition. As though it took a time delay for her to realize there was no reason aside from her current problem that Dante should be out here with her—or here at all. He wasn’t the sort of guy to crash in antebellum tourist traps.

“You came here for me,” she echoed. “Why?”

He shrugged a shoulder, his face blanking the way it did when he wanted to appear blasé. “Why not?”

“Come on.”

“Thought you could use a friend.”

Ava stared at him a moment longer, then sighed heavily and tore her gaze to the ground. Yeah, she supposed she could use a friend. Or a whole army of them. And though Dante wasn’t the first person she would have called, she couldn’t deny she was happy to see him.

Not that his presence answered her questions. If anything, he added to the pile.

“I take it Merle gave you the message,” she murmured. “About…”

“The angel?” One perfect eyebrow arched. Actually, there wasn’t much about Dante that wasn’t perfect. Physically, at least. One of his most annoying qualities also happened to be his most prized. There was nothing worse than a man who knew just how damn good he looked.

Truly, Dante had always seemed a bit too perfect when it came to the male form. He was only a few inches taller than she and had a body built for debauchery, complete with strong arms and a marble-carved chest. Tonight, he was wrapped in a snug pair of jeans and a form-fitting long-sleeved navy tee, which made his pale skin seem paler. His hair was coal black and his eyes sparkled blue. Ava had always loved his eyes.

And thinking about his perfect eyes right now on the cusp of a broken heart while all of Hell nipped her heels was probably the last in a very long line of bad ideas. At once she felt overtly vulnerable, exposed. Standing in a strange town under strange circumstances with him, her oldest friend, seeming one part savior and one part…pissed.

Nothing in her world made sense right now. Dante had just muddied things up even more.

“Yeah,” she said when she remembered to speak. “The angel. Merle told you.”

Dante nodded solemnly. “That was the plan, right?”

Ava released a shaky breath, her mind spinning so fast it was a small wonder she remained standing. Looking at Dante now with everything that had happened in the past week still heavy on her heart, with the uncertainty of her future, took her suddenly oddly-shaped world and turned it on its head. She felt like she was living in the funhouse mirror version of her reality. Sebastian, then the Binsfeld Six, and now her vampire.

At some point she had to wake up.

“What are you doing here?” she asked again. “Do you have any idea what’s going on?”

“Not much,” he admitted, stepping forward.

There was something guarded in his gaze, and so help her if she started analyzing every little look from Dante, she would lose her mind. Trying to figure out what he was doing here was work enough.

“Not much.”

He nodded. “Just that you were out here. And you could use a friend.”

This admission did little to answer her questions. Her friendship with Dante was not a secret, by any means, yet she couldn’t speculate as to why anyone right now would decide to throw her a lifeline. Being alone certainly hadn’t done much for her…yet there was a good reason she hadn’t gone to Dante in the first place.

Dante was the kind of friend who was there for the good times and gone for the bad. At least in her experience. If he had any idea what was really going on, he’d make tracks. The large, cartoonish kind.

But Dante didn’t know. Hell, he didn’t even know what she was. His knowledge beyond his own kind was rather limited, and while his experience with others of Lilith’s children left him with a relatively grounded understanding of how the world worked, certain things—like Hell and all its residents—remained more or less relegated to the realm of other. He was aware Hell existed, sure, and had figured her for a demon early in their relationship, but otherwise boasted little knowledge of Lucifer or the pit beyond what was assumed through myth.

Seven centuries and he had no idea she was part of that myth. She’d never mentioned it, and he likely hadn’t thought to ask. His perception of her role had been established on the legs of their meeting, which, as it was, had been entirely accidental. It just so happened she didn’t like watching anyone, demon or otherwise, suffer at the hands of holy men, and in saving Dante’s life all those years ago, she’d earned a permanent ally.

Well, until now. Her own brand of permanence was about to run out, and of course Dante wouldn’t know why. If she explained the significance of what had occurred with Sebastian, and how limited her future was, he would be gone. She wouldn’t know to miss him.

Still, she owed him explanations. Dante was the one loose end she had—the only one who wouldn’t know why she was gone when Lucifer finally came to collect her life. Her siblings knew what was coming. Dante was the last person to whom to pay her regards.

Perhaps that was why someone had sent him to her. So she could do right by her one earthly friend and say goodbye.

“I could,” Ava admitted softly. “Use a friend. I’m glad you’re here.”

A shadow crossed Dante’s face. “That’s not good.”

She frowned. “What? That I’m glad you’re here?”

“Yeah. You’re never glad I’m near these days.” He laughed shortly. “You must really be into some deep shit.”

“You have no idea.”

“All this over an angel.”

The corner of Ava’s mouth pulled into a grin, and for a moment she felt somewhat like her old self. “More or less.”

“An angel, Ava. For fuck’s sake, what happened to your dignity?”

“Where were you three weeks ago?”

“I dunno, but if I’d known you were gonna be falling for one of those winged assholes, you’d better believe I’d have dropped everything to beat some sense into you.”

She snickered. “Like you could take me.”

“You never give me the chance to try,” he retorted, his eyes gleaming.

“Your ego is too fragile to handle getting your ass handed to you by a girl.”

“So you’ve told me. And told me. And told me. You know what they say about words and actions, don’t you, love?”

A small thrill raced down her spine, her insides igniting with heat and a rush of good old-fashioned nostalgia. “Wanna grab a beer?” she asked. “Or, you know, a burger? I don’t think I’ve eaten in a week.” She paused, then waved at him. “You can consider it the last meal of a condemned man.”

“‘Cause you’re gonna kick my ass, right?”

“That’s the plan.”

Dante grinned ear-to-ear. “Thought you’d never ask.”

Author Interview

Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

I’ve always been a writer. My grandparents owned a print shop when I was a child, and whenever I visited, they allowed me to select scratch pads from the front window, on which I would doodle stories. Eventually, I graduated to spiral notebooks, which I filled to capacity. My first computer was either a late 80s or early 90s model, with a black screen and orange type. My methods of telling stories has evolved, but the writing has always been there.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

When I was young—when I discovered I loved telling stories. I have always held the philosophy that to be a writer, all you have to do is write. Being published is an accomplishment, absolutely, but not a requirement.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I was shocked, actually. I submitted the book to a few publishers, and received an offer on the first go.

Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?

I am a copywriter at a local ad agency during the day. My duties involve drafting blog posts, social media posts, radio and television spots, digital ad copy, web copy, and so forth for various clients.

Who is your publisher? Or do you self-publish?

I have self-published rereleases, but my current publisher is Totally Bound, and I love everything about working with them.

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

Once I get rolling, I don’t stop…but it might take me a long time to get rolling. Case in point: I’ve been working on a book for a couple years now. The lengthy period is more due to a self-imposed sabbatical as my personal life was rearranged and settled. This project really took off at the beginning of this summer, and I anticipate it will be finished by late August or September.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I’m working exclusively now on the following books in the Sinners & Saints series.

What genre would you place your books into?

Paranormal erotic romance

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I’ve always been drawn to the paranormal. Things that are fantastical interest me, since they are not in the world we actually live in.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

Lucifer is my favorite, easily. A part of that is due to the fact that he has such a famous name and many authors in many genres have taken a crack at him. I write him to be intelligent, witty, with a fierce temper and incredibly protective. He’s also tortured, depressed, and has a defined morality. I’m both anxious and excited to write his book, once I get there.

Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?

Sure. Negative and positive, I’m interested to see what people think. I found my voice initially in the fanfic community, where comments/reviews served as royalties. That’s a hard habit to kick. And luckily over the years, my skin has gotten really thick.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?

I choose the title first. It drives me crazy if I don’t have the title figured.

How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books?

Well, in the Sinners & Saints series, the names are predetermined. The Sins are named for their Latinate roots, same for the Virtues. For the characters whose names I do choose, there are a few things I take into consideration. Mostly just names I’ve heard and like, or names that mean something to me. Grayson Bailey, the hero of the second book, was named in part after George Bailey from It’s A Wonderful Life. Dante was chosen because of The Inferno. Just depends. The settings I choose are mostly dependent on places I’ve been and/or am familiar with.

Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?

I’m a plotter, so everything I can possibly prepare in advance is done so. Of course, characters have minds of their own, and unanticipated characteristics often find their way into the story.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals as in like Aesops Fables type of "The moral of this story is..")

I think all writers input some message or meaning into their work, consciously or not. There are definitely messages in mine, but I leave interpreting these messages up to the reader.

Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback?

I love the convenience of eBooks, but paperbacks are still my preferred format.

Your favorite food is?

Pasta. I love a good baked pasta.

Your favorite singer/group is?

The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Ben Folds. I love them equally for different reasons.

Your favorite color is?

Blue

Your favorite Author is?

Stephen King
