Meditation for Sleep and Anxiety: Your Guide to Better Rest, Peaceful Nights, and Calmer Days
Tossing and turning at night, mind racing with worries, unable to drift off to sleep… If this sounds familiar, you know how frustrating it can be! The relationship between anxiety and sleep problems is a vicious cycle – anxiety makes it harder to sleep, and lack of sleep worsens anxiety. But there’s hope: meditation for sleep and anxiety can help break this cycle and guide you back to restful nights and peaceful days.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how meditation techniques like Tapping can help calm your mind and ease you into sleep, plus share some powerful guided meditations for sleep and anxiety you can try tonight.
Why use meditation for sleep and anxiety? When anxiety keeps you up at night, it can feel impossible to quiet your mind. Your thoughts race, your heart pounds, and sleep seems more and more out of reach. This is where meditation for sleep and anxiety comes in.
Meditation works by:
Activating your body’s relaxation responseLowering stress hormones like cortisolQuieting racing thoughtsReleasing physical tensionCreating mental space from anxious thoughtsPreparing your mind and body for deeper restWhile traditional meditation can be helpful, many people find it challenging to sit still and meditate when anxiety is high. That’s where combining meditation with other proven techniques, like EFT Tapping, can be particularly powerful.
Tapping meditation: a unique approach to sleep and anxietyEFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping is a technique that combines elements of modern psychology and ancient Chinese acupressure. It involves tapping on specific points on your body while focusing your mind – kind of like a blend of acupressure and mindfulness meditation.
Research shows that Tapping can help:
Reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) by 43%Lower anxiety levels significantlyImprove sleep qualityBreak the cycle between stress and poor sleepThe benefit of using Tapping meditation for sleep and anxiety is that it gives you something physical to do with your restless energy while also calming your mind. This makes it particularly effective when you’re feeling too anxious to meditate in the traditional sense.

Who Invented EFT Tapping? The Fascinating History Behind This Life-Changing Technique
Who invented EFT Tapping? It’s a question I’m asked all the time, and I love sharing the incredible story behind it.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping is a technique rooted in the principles of ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. It has helped millions of people worldwide find relief from anxiety, trauma, physical pain, and more. Let’s explore the fascinating origin story of EFT Tapping and trace its evolution from an accidental discovery to the scientifically-validated technique it is today.
Who invented EFT Tapping? An accidental discovery leads to an incredible breakthrough
The history of EFT Tapping begins with clinical psychologist Dr. Roger Callahan in the 1980s.
Dr. Callahan had been working with a client named Mary who suffered from a severe water phobia. Despite trying every conventional therapeutic technique at his disposal for over a year, Mary’s fear remained so intense she couldn’t even bathe her children.
During one session, Mary mentioned a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach whenever she thought about water. In a moment of inspiration, Dr. Callahan drew upon his study of the body’s meridian system (used in traditional Chinese medicine) and asked Mary to tap under her eye – an acupressure point connected to the stomach meridian.
What happened next was remarkable: all of a sudden, that feeling in the pit of her stomach when she thought about water was gone. And Mary’s lifelong phobia vanished within minutes. She immediately went to a nearby pool to test it out, and for the first time in her life, she felt no fear around water. This transformation proved permanent, sparking Dr. Callahan’s journey to understand and develop what he called “Thought Field Therapy” (TFT).
The evolution: Gary Craig simplifies the EF Tapping techniqueIn the 1990s, Gary Craig, a Stanford-educated engineer who had trained under Dr. Callahan, recognized the potential of this tapping therapy but saw an opportunity to make it more accessible.
While TFT used different tapping sequences for different issues and required a trained practitioner to implement the technique, Craig developed a simplified, one-size-fits-all sequence that people could easily learn and apply to any problem.
Craig named his streamlined version “Emotional Freedom Techniques” or EFT. His vision was to create a technique that anyone could use, anywhere, without needing extensive training or complicated protocols. This standardization helped EFT Tapping gain widespread adoption and opened the door for scientific research into its effectiveness.
The scientific validation for EFT Tapping builds year after year
What started as an accidental discovery has now been validated by over 300 scientific studies.
Over the years, the research base has grown, and we now have studies to show that EFT Tapping can:
Reduce cortisol (stress hormone) levels by 43%Decrease anxiety by 41%Lower heart rate and blood pressureHelp with PTSD, pain management, depression, insomnia, and various other conditionsThe technique has even gained recognition from major institutions, with the American Psychological Association acknowledging EFT as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD and the National Institutes of Health listing it as a complementary option for anxiety relief.
Bringing EFT Tapping to the mainstreamWhen I first discovered Tapping, I was immediately struck by its power to create real, lasting change. I felt it for myself, I witness it in others, I read the research – and I was hooked.
Along with my siblings Alex and Jessica, I became passionate about making this technique accessible to everyone who could benefit from it. We developed the concept of “Tapping Meditations,” which are guided Tapping sessions that people can follow along with at home, on their own.
Through The Tapping Solution App, we’ve been able to bring the practice of Tapping to you, wherever and whenever you need it most. It’s like having a Tapping coach right in your pocket. No special equipment, no training, nothing. Just you, your fingertips, and an app.

Bilateral Tapping for Anxiety: How to Use This Calming Technique
Looking for a natural way to calm anxiety? Bilateral Tapping for anxiety is a powerful stress-relief technique that involves tapping on both sides of your body. Whether you’ve heard about bilateral tapping for anxiety relief or you’re completely new to the concept, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started so you can reduce anxiety, calm your nervous system, and come back to a state of peace.
What is bilateral Tapping for anxiety?Bilateral Tapping is part of a scientifically-proven stress relief technique called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping.
The technique involves gently tapping with your fingertips on specific acupressure points (found on both sides of your body) while focusing on whatever is causing you anxiety.
EFT Tapping combines ancient Chinese acupressure wisdom with modern psychology to help calm your nervous system and reduce stress naturally. The bilateral (two-sided) aspect means you can tap on both the left and right sides of your body, which many people find particularly soothing.
The Tapping points correspond to energy pathways in our body called meridians – the same ones used in acupuncture and acupressure. These meridians run along both sides of your body in symmetrical pairs, like a mirror image.
Just as your body has two arms, two legs, and two sides to your brain, you have matching meridian pathways on both the left and right sides. When you tap on your body bilaterally, you’re able to access these energy pathways on both sides.
How does bilateral Tapping help with anxiety? When you tap on both sides of your body on these acupressure points, while also thinking about what’s making you anxious, several things happen:
Calms Your Nervous System: The process of Tapping sends calming signals to your brain, helping you move out of fight-or-flight so you can feel more cool, calm, and collected.Reduces Stress Hormones: Research shows EFT Tapping can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) by up to 43% in just one hourReleases Strong Emotions: This process of Tapping on points on your body for anxiety is known as “Emotional Freedom Techniques” – because it is a proven way to help people to release strong emotions from their body like anxiety, fear, sadness, anger, and more. Promotes Relaxation: Tapping helps to calm the nervous system and promote relaxation from the inside out. Many people also find the rhythmic nature of tapping both sides to be a very soothing process.Addresses Root Causes and Triggers: The process of Tapping can help you get to the root of your anxiety – releasing the charge of past memories, current triggers, and more. Bilateral Tapping for trauma can be particularly helpful if your anxiety is linked to difficult past experiences.Scientific research supports the effectiveness of bilateral Tapping for anxiety.
Multiple studies have shown significant reductions in anxiety levels after using EFT Tapping, and there are even fascinating studies that show benefits like positive changes in brain activity, gene expression, heart rate, blood pressure, and more.
After 1 million plays of our Release Anxiety Tapping meditation, users report an average 41% reduction in anxiety levels in just 9 minutes!
The bilateral Tapping pointsWithin EFT Tapping, there are nine main points you’ll tap on. Six of these points are found in bilateral pairs (with a point on each side of the body), while the remaining three are found on the centerline of the body.
Here are the main nine points you’ll tap on:

Eyebrow Point (bilateral point)
Where the eyebrows begin, closest to the bridge of the nose.
Side of the Eye (bilateral point)
On the bone directly along the outside of either eye.
Under the Eye (bilateral point)
On the bone directly under either eye.
Under the Nose
The area directly beneath the nose and above the upper lip.
Under the Mouth
This is the area just below your bottom lip and above the chin, right in the crease.
Collarbone (bilateral point)
Starting from where your collar bones meet in the center, go down an inch and out an inch on either side.
Under the Arm (bilateral point)
On your side, about four inches beneath the armpit.
Top of the Head
Directly on the crown of your head.
Note: In the diagram, you can see how six of these Tapping points exist along mirror image locations on both sides of the body.
How to do bilateral Tapping for anxietyBefore you jump in, you can learn all the basics of how to do EFT Tapping here.
When you are ready, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to using bilateral Tapping for anxiety:
Step 1 – Identify Your Anxiety:
Notice how anxious you feel, and rate the intensity on a scale from 0-10.
Step 2 – Start with a Setup Phrase:
While Tapping on the Side of the Hand point (on either side of the body), repeat a setup statement that acknowledges your anxiety while being compassionate with yourself.
Example setup statements for anxiety:
Step 3 – Tap Through the Points in Order:
Now, you’ll tap through the remaining points in order. You can tap on both sides at once using both hands, or alternate between left and right sides to do bilateral stimulation. Or, you can stick to one side – whatever feels best to you!
As you tap through the points in sequence, reflect on your anxiety, what is making you feel anxious, how your body feels, etc. You can repeat “reminder phrases” out loud that help you stay focused, such as:
“This anxiety” “All this pressure in my chest” “I’m anxious about the meeting later”“I can’t stop feeling this way”“I’m worried something bad is going to happen”Step 4 – Check Back in With Yourself:
After one round of Tapping, notice how you feel and rate your anxiety again on the same 0 to 10 scale. If you feel better, your new number will be lower. You can repeat the Tapping sequence again and again until you notice a shift and have released some of the anxiety.
Step 5 – Introduce Empowering Statements:
After you’ve done enough rounds of Tapping to release some of your anxiety and you feel a bit better, you can begin moving towards the positive and anchor in some empowering affirmations that help lift you up. Keep Tapping through the points in order as you repeat phrases to yourself like:
“In this moment, I am safe”“I can handle anything that comes my way” “I choose to be patient and kind with myself”“I can breathe through this”“I will take this one step at a time”“I am strong and resilient”Step 6 – Reassess Once Again:
Take a deep breath in, and out, and notice how you feel. Where is your anxiety now? Notice any shifts in how you feel in body and mind.

Bilateral Tapping vs. EMDR – what’s the difference?
While many people discover bilateral Tapping through searching for EMDR, EFT Tapping is its own unique and powerful technique.
Similar to EMDR, bilateral Tapping for anxiety also involves bilateral stimulation and helps with things like navigating strong emotions, relieving anxiety, overcoming trauma, and more.
If you’re interested in learning about different approaches to anxiety and trauma relief, you can read more about how EFT Tapping compares to EMDR here. You can also learn more about a powerful technique called the Gamut Point Procedure here – a technique that combines some of the elements of EMDR and Tapping.
The beauty of EFT Tapping is that it’s something you can learn and practice on your own, anytime you need support. Whether you’re dealing with daily stress, panic attacks, social anxiety, or other concerns, there’s a Tapping sequence that can help.
Getting started with Tapping is easy! You can start experiencing the anxiety-relieving benefits of bilateral Tapping today.
The simplest way to learn bilateral Tapping is through guided sessions that walk you through the process so you don’t have to think about it and can just jump right into the process.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore how to use the Tapping technique for intrusive thoughts to finally find relief and regain peace in your mind.
What is Tapping for intrusive thoughts?Intrusive thoughts are those unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that seemingly come from nowhere and cause significant distress. While everyone experiences occasional unwanted thoughts, they become problematic when they occur frequently, cause intense anxiety, or interfere with daily life.
Common types of intrusive thoughts include:
Repeated worries about safety or harmUnwanted violent or aggressive imagesPersistent doubts or “what if” scenariosFear of acting on unwanted impulsesObsessive thoughts about contamination or cleanlinessEFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping offers a unique solution by combining ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychology. The Tapping technique for intrusive thoughts involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points on your body while acknowledging and processing these specific thoughts.
This powerful technique helps by:
Calming the amygdala (your brain’s fear center) to reduce anxietyBreaking the cycle of obsessive thinkingDecreasing the emotional charge of intrusive thoughtsPromoting acceptance, self-compassion, and self-awareness.Creating new neural pathways for healthier, more empowering thought patternsStep-by-step guide to Tapping for intrusive thoughtsIf you are new to Tapping and want a breakdown of the basics, check out our comprehensive beginner’s guide to EFT Tapping. And if you are looking for specific Tapping techniques for OCD, go here.
When you’re ready to give it a try, here’s how to use EFT Tapping when intrusive thoughts arise:
Step 1: Rate Your Distress
Before starting, notice the intrusive thought that has been bothering you. How intense does the intrusive thought feel, on a scale from 0 to 10 (with 10 being it feels the most intense and powerful, and 0 being it doesn’t have any charge behind it at all).
Step 2: Tap on the Side of the Hand While Repeating a Setup Statement
While tapping on the Side of the Hand point, repeat a setup statement that acknowledges the thought, while also accepting yourself and how you feel.
Examples:
“Even though I can’t stop thinking [fill in the blank], I deeply and completely accept myself”“Even though this thought keeps running through my mind, I accept how I feel and I am safe to breathe in this moment” “Even though this thought feels so true in this moment, I acknowledge that it is just a thought, and I am open interrupting this pattern”Step 3: Tap Through the Points
Moving through each of the points below in order, tap while expressing your feelings about the intrusive thoughts.
You can repeat “reminder phrases” to yourself while you tap through the points (like “These unwanted thoughts about [fill in the blank],” “I feel out of control, or “I wish these thoughts would stop”). Or, simply think about whatever is distressing you and reflect on how it makes you feel as you tap.

Tapping point sequence:
EyebrowSide of the EyeUnder the EyeUnder the NoseUnder the MouthCollarbone Under the ArmTop of the HeadStep 4: Move Toward the Positive
After a round or two focusing on the problem and releasing the charge of the thought, begin shifting toward more empowering statements as you continue tapping through the points in sequence.
As you release the charge of the unhelpful thought patterns, you can now rewire more positive, empowering thoughts in their place.
Some affirmations you may repeat as you tap could include:
“I am more than my thoughts”“I can observe these thoughts without engaging with them”“I choose to remain calm”“These thoughts are just thoughts; they cannot harm me.”“I am safe and in control”Step 5: Reassess How You Feel
Stop Tapping, and take a deep breath. Then, tune back into the strength of the original intrusive thought. How intense does it feel now, on the same 0 to 10 scale? If your number is still higher than you’d like and the thought still has more of a hold on you than you’d like, go back to the beginning and repeat the process, adjusting the words you use to fit how you feel now. Keep repeating until you feel a shift.

EFT and TFT: From Complex Origins to Simple Solutions with Tapping
When exploring the world of energy psychology and healing, EFT and TFT often come up together in conversation. These two powerful Tapping techniques share deep roots but took different paths in their evolution. Let me guide you through the story of how TFT (Thought Field Therapy), a complex therapeutic system, gave birth to EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), the simpler, more accessible approach that millions use today.
Understanding EFT and TFT Tapping: the basicsBoth EFT and TFT blend ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychological principles. But is EFT and TFT Tapping, anyway?
At their core, both techniques involve tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on whatever is bothering you – whether that’s emotional distress or physical discomfort.
The key difference lies in their approach: TFT uses specific sequences for different problems, like having different keys for different locks. EFT, on the other hand, uses one universal sequence of nine Tapping points that can be applied to anything – like having one master key that opens all doors.
You can learn more about the foundations of EFT Tapping here.
The birth of TFT: where it all beganIt all started with a breakthrough moment in the practice of a psychotherapist named Dr. Roger Callahan. Working with a client named Mary who had a severe water phobia, he discovered that tapping on specific meridian points could create rapid transformation.
After Tapping on an acupressure point under the eye (corresponding to the stomach meridian), Mary’s lifelong fear vanished in minutes. After over a year of trying different techniques to no avail, this approach proved to be the breakthrough that transformed Mary’s life forever.
This discovery led Dr. Callahan to develop TFT, creating specific “algorithms” (tapping sequences) for different conditions. Think of it like a prescription, requiring a specific sequence for a specific issue. While powerful, this complexity meant TFT required professional guidance to be most effective and was quite complicated to implement.
The evolution to EFT: simplifying for widespread useGary Craig, who studied under Dr. Callahan, saw TFT’s incredible potential and aimed to expand on its capabilities. Recognizing that the complexity that made it powerful also made it less accessible to the average person, Craig aimed to simplify the approach so that it could help even more people.
He had a revolutionary idea: what if one tapping sequence could work for everything?
This insight led to the development of EFT Tapping, which streamlined TFT’s multiple algorithms into one comprehensive sequence. Like I described earlier, it was like taking a whole bunch of keys to different doors and making one master key that could unlock them all.
Comparing EFT Tapping vs TFT Tapping: a closer lookTFT:
Custom sequences for different issuesRequires professional guidanceIncludes specialized techniquesMore complex but highly targetedEFT:
One universal sequence (more of a “one-size-fits-all” approach)Easy to learn and rememberCan be self-administeredIs simple and accessible to everyoneThe impact today: from complex origins to worldwide accessThe evolution from TFT Tapping to EFT Tapping illustrates a powerful principle: sometimes making something simpler makes it more effective, not less.
While TFT laid the groundwork with its precise, specialized approach, EFT’s simplicity has allowed millions worldwide to benefit from the healing power of the Tapping technique.
Today, you can access the power of Tapping through simple tools like The Tapping Solution App, which guides you through the basic EFT sequence for various situations. It’s amazing to think that what began as a complex therapeutic system has evolved into something you can use anywhere, anytime you need support.

EFT Morning Tapping: How to Start Your Day Off Right with This Simple Technique
Ever notice how your morning sets the tone for the entire day? We all know the feeling of starting off on the wrong foot, only to have the whole day follow suit with one mess after another. A stressful start often leads to a stressful day, while beginning with intention and calm creates more peace and productivity. Whether you’re dealing with morning stress, struggling to get out of bed, or simply want to set yourself up for success, incorporating EFT morning Tapping into your routine can transform how you approach each day.
In this guide, we’ll explore how to use EFT Tapping to create an energizing and empowering morning practice.
What is EFT morning Tapping?EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping is a gentle mind-body practice that combines elements of ancient Chinese acupressure with modern psychology. The technique involves using your fingertips to tap on specific acupressure points on your face and body while focusing on how you’re feeling, so you can let go of any stress or discomfort and make room for however you do want to feel.
When using Tapping to start your day, it can help you release anything holding you back in the morning – like low energy, anxiety, worry, etc. – and welcome in whatever you want to create in your day ahead.
Think of it like hitting your body’s reset button first thing in the morning. Just as you brush your teeth or wash your face every day, morning meditation is just as important – only it’s a way to “clean” your mind and emotions!
Morning Tapping is a powerful way to wake up your energy system, set a positive tone, and create an intentional start to your day.
Why practice morning Tapping?EFT Tapping to start your day offers several key benefits:
Sets a Positive Tone: Rather than immediately jumping into stress mode when you wake up, morning Tapping helps you begin your day from a centered, balanced state.Reduces Morning Anxiety: Many people experience heightened anxiety in the morning. Tapping helps calm your nervous system and reduce stress hormones, making it easier to face the day ahead.Increases Energy: Morning Tapping can help shake off grogginess and increase your natural energy levels so you can go out there and get things done with ease.Creates Intentionality: Taking time to tap in the morning allows you to set clear intentions for your day instead of operating on autopilot.Improves Focus: By clearing mental clutter first thing, you can approach your daily tasks with greater clarity and concentration.Boosts Productivity: Starting your day in a calm, focused state helps you be more productive throughout the day.How to do EFT morning TappingIf you are new to Tapping and want an overview of the basics, check out this Beginner’s Guide to EFT Tapping first.
And if you already know the basics, here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your morning Tapping practice:
1. Choose your timingThe ideal time to tap is right after waking up, before checking emails or social media. Even 2 can make a significant difference (but if you can do more, that’s great – go for it!). You might need to wake up slightly earlier to fit it in, but starting your day intentionally is worth it.
2. Find a quiet spaceChoose a peaceful spot where you won’t be interrupted. This could be:
Sitting up in bedA comfortable chair in a quiet cornerYour favorite morning spotEven the bathroom if that’s where you can get privacy3. Begin your morning Tapping sequenceAssess how you feel:
Start by taking a deep breath in and out and checking in with yourself. How do you feel this morning? What’s on your mind? What would you like your day to look like and feel like today?
Rate the intensity of any stress or anxiety you’re feeling on a scale of 0-10.
Then follow this basic sequence:
Start with the Side of the Hand point:
Tap continuously while saying a setup statement three times, like this one:
“Even though I’m feeling [insert how you feel] this morning, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
Tap through the rest of the points while focusing on how you feel:
Tap about 5-7 times on each of the following points while focusing on whatever you are struggling with this morning.
EyebrowSide of the eyeUnder the eyeUnder the noseUnder the mouthCollarboneUnder the armTop of the headYou can say “reminder phrases” out loud as you tap to keep your focus on what is bothering you, such as “I have so much to do today,” “I’m worried about [specific upcoming event],” or “I feel groggy and tired.”
Reassess how you feel:
After doing one round of Tapping, check in with yourself again. How are you feeling? You can go through the points again if the intensity is still higher than you’d like, and keep repeating until you feel a bigger shift. Or, when you feel ready, you can move onto the positive.
Introduce the positive:
Once you are feeling a bit better, you can do one final round of Tapping while focusing on what you want to create in your day. This can help anchor in new, positive intentions and beliefs about the rest of your day.
Here’s an example of a Tapping round to round to close out your morning Tapping practice:
Eyebrow: What if I could have a great day today?
Side of the eye: I choose to feel calm, centered, and energized.
Under the eye: It’s safe to feel good this morning.
Under the nose: I can handle whatever comes my way.
Under the mouth: I’m ready for a great day.
Collarbone: I welcome in positive energy.
Under the arm: I choose to feel confident and ready.
Top of the head: I am grateful for this new day.

The great thing about Tapping is that you can adapt your morning Tapping routine to address any specific challenges you commonly face when starting out your day:
For morning anxiety, you might use phrases like:
“Even though I’m worried about everything I have to do today, I choose to take it one step at a time.”“I’m already feeling behind”“I’m feeling anxious about my meeting later”“I choose to breathe deeply and release tension from my body, grounding myself in this present moment”For low energy or morning fog, you might use phases like:
“Even though I’m feeling tired, I’m open to feeling more energized as the day goes on”“I’m having trouble waking up”“I just want to go back to sleep”“I choose to welcome vibrant energy into my day”For Monday morning blues, you might use phrases like:
“Even though I’m dreading going back to work, I choose to stay open to joyful possibilities today.”“I wish it was still the weekend”“I’m worried about everything that’s on my plate this week”“I choose to stay open to the gifts that this day might bring”Tips for success with morning TappingStart Small: Begin with just a couple of minutes if that feels most manageable – even two minutes can make a big difference! You can always extend your Tapping practice as it becomes more of a habit.Be Consistent: Try to tap at the same time each morning to establish a routine. It can become as much of a ritual as brushing your teeth!Do It First Thing: Try to avoid checking your messages, opening your email, or doing anything else before you do your Tapping. If it’s the very first thing you do, you won’t get distracted by other tasks and will get the chance to set your intentions right off the bat. Stay Flexible: While consistency is important, don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day. Just get back to it the next morning as best you can!Track How You Feel: Notice how your days differ when you start with Tapping versus when you don’t. Do you feel more focused and centered? Energized and optimistic? Maybe you notice you get more done, or feel less anxious, or are able to be more present with your loved ones.Ready to transform your mornings? The morning is a sacred time for setting the tone of your day and connecting with yourself, and starting your day with EFT morning Tapping can be a truly transformative experience.
It can also be a lot of fun (just give this 30 second Tapping video a watch and tap along, you’ll see what I mean!)
