Wow, you sure are a woman of many talents! Good luck and enjoy!

THATS SO COOL!! my last lesson was learning ave maria, but i kind of sidestepped and was doing con te partiro. im better suited to mezzo-soprano roles in musicals because i dont really have a grip on italian…….

I’m guessing you’re in the earlier stages of your training? Have you taken all of the lyric diction classes (for Italian, French, German, English) yet? If not, get on that! Most voice programs require them for singers but if your school doesn’t, DO take those courses; you’ll need them! Don’t let your facility with the languages block your access, particularly to Italian, for two reasons: 1) pianists play scales. Singers sing the 24 Italian songs & arias. You need to sing those pieces. It’s just part of the drill. And 2) Italian is the easiest by a long shot. If you can’t master Italian, good luck with French and German - and English, which is an inherently unmusical language and doesn’t sit easily in the mouth even when it’s your first language! I’ve taught this stuff for years and years and it’s hard. Make friends with your languages now!

Sorry - you didn’t ask for my advice, but my inner voice teacher couldn’t help it. :P All the best as you navigate the repertoire! :)

coloratura mezzo-soprano, but i am being trained up to soprano

Oh yeah, the days when everything is still shifting and growing and settling - fun fun! You’ll probably end up a medium-weight lyric with good coloratura. I’m calling it now. :P I’m at the other end of the scale - full-on dramatic soprano. Lots of Wagner and heavy Italian, like Turandot, Leonora from Verdi’s Forza, La Gioconda, etc. German stuff is my bag. :)

Just a wee PSA that, while I’m making progress on the stack of emails that I’m behind on, I’m not going to be around much in the next few days.

Exciting reason, though: I’m making a CD! I’ve said here and there that I’m a classical singer, formerly career-wise, now just doing it on the side. I’m making a recording for my mom’s 60th birthday this summer, an interesting mix of things that she particularly likes - opera arias in German, Italian, and Czech, art song in German, Italian, Russian, English, and a bit of other stuff. I’ll be selling it in summer as well, once it’s all ready to go, though I haven’t decided yet whether I’m going to sell it here as well (outing myself, ahh!) :P But either way, I’m out of town doing the actual recording tomorrow and Tuesday. Send good vibes, if you will! :)
