Beheaded Syrian scholar refused to lead Isis to hidden Palmyra antiquities

Beheaded Syrian scholar refused to lead Isis to hidden Palmyra antiquities:

commonplacecaz:

There is exactly one Ancient Studies professor in my department. I know, however, and am friends with, both of his current PhD students. One has been blogging and reporting on the destruction of Syrian and Iraqi historical sites by ISIS for over a year, and it’s driving him insane. The other is my cohort-mate, and she’s leaving our program. Part of it is personal; I can’t help but wonder whether part of it is also because her field is being destroyed before her eyes, day by day.

Don’t get me wrong - there’s plenty rotten in the state of academia and history departments are no exception. My cohort-mate has terrible stories about idiotic shenanigans that went on in her highly-specialized ancient studies MA program. Historians-in-training of every stripe struggle to have as strong a public voice as they used to in education, policy, commentary and journalism. We don’t usually make the news, and frankly, most of the time we don’t deserve to.

But this - this, right here. Mr. Asaad, who was tortured for a month because he refused to tell his captors where he had hidden priceless artefacts. Mr. Asaad, who spent fifty years protecting, investigating and writing about one of the world’s most precious sites. Mr. Asaad, whose headless body now hangs from a column in his beloved Palmyra because he refused to run. Mr. Asaad had the sort of devotion to his history that we can only dream of aspiring to every day.

One of the greatest crimes human butchers can commit is against history, because those who control the past control the future. Our understanding and interpretation of our history is what lays out new roads underneath our feet.

Remember this.

Who tortures an 82-year-old scholar??? This is so devastatingly sad. I’ve been to Palmyra and understand how important it is. This makes me so sad.

The more I look at this, the more Sherlock reminds me of a bird. Like when a pigeon wants to fuck another pigeon, they slowly approach and make those faces. Like these are the faces right before they puff up real big and start cooing as loud as they can and vigorously chasing the other pigeon around.

I would really like to say they’re peacock faces, I could kinda see it, but I have been around a lot of pigeons and peacocks and these are much more pigeon-y, Sherlock is basically a big horny pigeon here is what I’m saying

PIGEON–?! … pidgelock

Exactly what I’ve been saying about these pics. Well, less the horny pigeon part, lol. But YES.

Oh my god, Silent, you made me cry again! I just read The Alphabet of Sherlock Holmes... Sherlock is soooo romantic ❤ thank you for this amazing fanfic, that's why you're one of my favorite writers!

Oh yay, thank you!!! :) I absolutely thing that Sherlock is a DIEHARD romantic deep (or not even that deep!) in his heart! I mean, look at the stag date he planned for him and John! And that’s without any practise at being romantic, you know? Just his level of detail and thoughtfulness suggests that we’re only just scratching the surface of how incredibly romantic he could be if he knew it were welcome, permitted, and returned in kind, you know? I’m so pleased that you liked this little ditty! Thanks so much for coming to say so!
