Gymbro fail of the day
This is a real exchange that happened to me today at my building’s tiny (shitty) gym:
Me: *is lifting free weights with headphones on at the weight bench*
Dudebro: *interrupts me, mid-set, by standing in front of the bench and waving at me until I pay attention to him*
Me: *puts down weights, takes off one ear bud, figuring he wants to know how much longer I’ll need the bench or something* Yeah?
Dudebro: You know, you’d be a lot hotter if you were using smaller weights.
Me: *stares at him in genuine disbelief.* (Does he mean in terms of… core body temperature, because the opposite is generally true. He really means that I’m lifting too much weight and that he finds this off-putting???) *Ponders many, many responses within that same five seconds* Your opinion is irrelevant.
Dudebro: *immediately mad, opens mouth*
Me: Don’t talk to me. *puts ear bud back in, resumes lifting*
Like… I know that many men are gross, but… SERIOUSLY?????????? A guy thought it was both okay to interrupt my workout in the first place, but then it was to criticize me for being too strong???? Is his penis really THAT small???????

Serious translation? Music notation is all about fractions. The time signature (the two stacked numbers at the beginning of the piece) determine what sort of fraction we’re counting in and how many of them there should be in each measure/bar. The most common time signature is 4/4, which means that there are four beats per measure and those beats are quarter notes, which look like a solid note with a stem, nothing fancy. Four of those make a whole note, which is a big empty circle with no stem. Two of them make a half note, which is an empty circle with a stem. If you go the other way and start dividing the beat into smaller beat fragments, that’s when it gets a bit complicated. Dividing a quarter note in half gets you an eighth note (two of them, really). Those look like a solid note head with a stem and a flag:

Thanks, you! Yeah, my boss… she’s a piece of work. You’d be proud of me: I sent a preliminary light probe to the person at HR who hired me, whom I’ve always liked, to ask what the procedure is if my professional relationship with my boss becomes unteneble. We’ll see what she says!
