Heroes, Anti-Heroes and Guys Who Just Need Their Ass Kicked Part 1 of 5
Over the next few weeks I will be posting my thoughts on the types of heroes I write for each series.
Ghostwalkers
I love a good hero or even anti-hero as much as the next person. Dark, mysterious and bad-ass make up the majority of the heroes I write, in any of my series.
Each series has a different kind of hero since each series highlights a different kind of world for those characters.
My Ghostwalkers are military men who were experimented on and had their natural psychic abilities enhanced. But, at their core they are military and they have traits you would associate with a solider. They want order, organization, they are suspect of anything out of the ordinary, they are honorable and trust mainly their own team. They swear, they’re hard, they fight, they kill. They are strategic and they go after an enemy with precision.
These are alpha heroes. They’re bossy, like their way and expect orders to be followed, especially theirs. If you’re looking for a beta hero, or a touchy-feely kind of hero, these are NOT them. They will take charge and push you if you let them.
Their heroines are women who were genetically enhanced. These women are sometimes abused, always mistreated to an extent, some are tortured and some are trained to kill. Some are abandoned and left to die. They are survivors with a lot of internal conflict regarding acceptance and trust. They are looking for a balance, needing help to adjust to a more normal life, needing guidance, but also needing someone worthy of their trust and loyalty. Some may be unsure of relationships and some may fight having one. Some may feel unwanted, unloveable, unworthy. But, in different ways, the heroines are equal to the heroes.
It is when two shattered lives find that their pieces fit that true love can exist even for the hardened, abandoned and unusual.

Power Game Hard Cover and Trailer
I’m getting excited now that January is near. Power Game features Ezekiel and takes place in New Orleans. The heroine has never been heard of before, but she brings with her new information for the Ghostwalkers that is critical and a game-changer to them all.

Without giving too much away, because I do want the book trailer to surprise you, we will be seeing some familiar faces and there will be some things that surprise even seasoned Ghostwalker series readers. So, if you’ve not seen the book trailer, please watch it before reading the rest of this blog.
Power Game Book Trailer
If you didn’t catch it, that’s Violet betraying the Ghostwalkers. But, she’s got more up her sleeve and even Whitney won’t see this coming.
Yes, someone dies. No, I can’t tell you who. But, it couldn’t be avoided. And it makes sense to the story. It had to happen.
The publisher decided it was time to put the Ghostwalkers into hard cover and though I know not everyone will be happy about the change, having the publisher want to take that step is a real compliment to an author. I’m proud they feel the series should progress to hard cover. But, I am also sensitive to what it means to my loyal readers. There will be a paperback edition, just like it is with the Carpathian novels. But, it comes a few months later. Please don’t forget your local library. And there are used book stores that you can check with a week or two after the book is out. Not everyone keeps the hardback editions.

Covert Game's Gino "Phantom" Mazza
It’s time to head back to the bayou! We’re back with Team Four and this time they’re being sent on a suicide mission to save a woman they’re not sure they can trust. I thought you might like a little insight to the story.

Gino “Phantom” Mazza has an interesting background as well as unusual abilities and heightened senses. He takes one look at pictures of Zara Hightower, spending hours reading articles and he just can’t stop thinking about her. So, when they finally meet, his protective instincts kick in and nobody better get in the way of his saving her.
It’s not that he’s some white knight, he’s not. His character has never been that. He has a dark history and isn’t the nicest man. But, something about her calls to him and the predator in him meets the need to protect her in a way that is seriously sexy.
I love bad boy protector stories. I just do. Having a GhostWalker bad boy protector was so immensely fun to write.

Covert Game's Heroine: Zara Hightower
Zara Hightower is the heroine of Covert Game and I wanted to talk a little bit about her in light of the Covert Game book release on March 20th.
Zara was raised like many of the genetically altered and enhanced women. A team of five became a team of three early in her training and those three were incredibly bonded.
Zara’s friends were Bellisia and Shylah. Both women were very much warriors, but though Zara had that same training and was capable of killing, she wasn’t the warrior the others were and Whitney punished her for that.
Zara is a very different heroine. She’s brilliant. She’s a leader in artificial intelligence and lectures all over the world.

Her intelligence is what kept her alive, and important to Whitney. So, when she’s captured she’s not entirely ready for what awaits and her only hope comes when Gino Mazza’s team decides that saving her is worth the potential cost of lives.
But, there’s so much more to Zara than meets the eye initially and through the book we discover what that is. I love this heroine. I love that she’s so different and I hope readers will enjoy her story.

Where to Begin in the Series: GhostWalkers
The GhostWalkers are my second largest series with 14 books currently in that series and another one that I’m currently writing. As you likely know by now, I write all of my books to be stand alone stories. You can read them in any order and you’ll have a full story. But, like most series there is often an overall story arc that can enhance a reader’s overall enjoyment of the story of the GhostWalkers.

The GhostWalkers are military experiments gone awry. They were to be psychically enhanced, but many also had their DNA manipulated. Some of these super soldiers have brain bleeds and need “anchors” to help sooth them and keep them focused. The later experiments had more DNA splicing, but less defects.
There are four teams of GhostWalkers located in different areas around the United States. If you don’t want to start at the very beginning with team 1 you might consider starting with Viper Game, which has us in the Louisiana Bayou with team 4. Viper Game introduces us to some of the failed experiments made up of orphaned girls with strange DNA splicing/editing.
If you’d like to start even later in the series consider Power Game. This introduces us to a new set of women who are more closely tied to Whitney, the scientist who created the GhostWalker program and it expands into more international intrigue while still keeping us with team 4.

Again, keep in mind that you can read any of the GhostWalker books on their own and have a complete story. These are just some suggestions of starting points if you’re someone who wants to jump in later in a series.

Covert Game – Inside the Characters
Zara Hightower was always going to be a complex character. I knew she was brilliant. Off the charts brilliant. Beautiful, which she didn’t see as a resource, or use as a resource. Her main focus would always be her “sisters”. Their lives mattered even more than her own. She would do anything for them, including break the rules by bringing in contraband to them, or lying to them to give them hope. Her life had started and would likely end in a laboratory where she’d been raised, trained and abused for the sake of experiment. She never expected to live as long as she had, so she wanted to be a bright light to them so they would continue to live, to try and save themselves.

Some people are naturally self-sacrificing. Not in a martyrdom kind of way, but in a generous, loving way. This is Zara. Though she was deadly in her own right, her nature was more of a giving, loving one. So when someone kidnapped her and tortured her, it challenged her sense of self and her belief that somewhere out there in the world there was kindness.
Gino Mazza had a horrific start as a child. His family was killed on his 12th birthday. He’d been shot and left for dead, his family home set on fire. But, his best friend, Joe Spagnola saved him and Joe’s family took him in. Gino grew up learning a mafia lifestyle and taking chances. He became very wealthy and, when Joe left to join the Air Force, Gino went with him. He was accepted into the GhostWalker program, his natural psychic abilities enhanced. He became a doctor and an elite hunter. His family became his “brothers”, other GhostWalkers he’d learned he could trust. He was fiercely loyal.

When Zara was captured and the call that came in asking for help was from the GhostWalker’s enemy Dr. Whitney, Gino and the team wondered if she were a plant, sent to harm them. Gino would do anything to protect his team and even as he realized he might be required to kill Zara, the pictures of her haunted him. Her beauty, her innocence, her horrible life forged from experimentation and hard training.
Matching up a hero and heroine takes some strategy. You need one to be strong where the other is weak. They have to complement one another. I want people to see both the conflict between them and the commonalities. Gino and Zara are both GhostWalkers, which makes them special. They both had a tough upbringing. They’re both wicked-smart.
But, not only do they both have trust issues, Zara was tortured, her spirit broken and the man she has to rely on knows he may have to kill her. It’s a pretty big conflict, especially given that the man who tortured her plans to reacquire her at any cost. You see, Zara has a big secret she’s kept from everyone and her ability to determine who to trust will be the difference between the life and death of hundreds of people. Including her own.

How to Date a GhostWalker
In celebration of Romance Week and Valentine's Day I thought it would be fun to give a little dating advice.

Have you ever dreamed of dating a GhostWalker? Let me help you with these quick tips and tricks.
Let me know WHO your dream date GhostWalker would be with! Where would you go on your first date?
How to tell if dating a GhostWalker is for you.
1. You must be willing to accept an alpha male/female. Or at least convince him/her they’re in charge.
2. Be willing to travel at a moment’s notice. And spend long, leisurely nights alone with your own personal GhostWalker.
3. Have an understanding and acceptance to go… deep undercover.
How to prepare for your first date.
1. Wear clothing that either distracts or conceals. Bonus points if it does both.
2. Expect the unexpected. Some GhostWalker “gifts” are worth the surprise.
3. Be flexible. The more flexible, the better.
What type of gift might you give to your GhostWalker date?
1. If you can’t BE the flower, bring the flower. There’s just something about flowers…
2. If you’re going to cook as the gift, be sure to use Nonny’s Favorite Recipes book.
3. Your GhostWalker may suffer from aches and pains. Perhaps a full body massage?
How to end your date with a GhostWalker.
1. Allow your GhostWalker to do a complete and thorough search of your home if he/she insists.
2. Allow your GhostWalker to do a complete and thorough search of YOU if he/she insists.
3. Why in the world would you end your date?

Don't forget to tell me about your dream date with a GhostWalker!

Toxic Game Book Trailer
Draden and Shylah are one of the most romantic couples I've ever created and I'm exited for their story to be told March 12th.
I wanted to share a bit about the book and reveal the Book Trailer for you today! I hope you'll enjoy it!

On a rescue mission in the heart of the Indonesian jungle, Dr. Draden Freeman and his GhostWalker team need to extract the wounded as quickly as possible — or risk spreading a deadly virus unleashed by a terrorist cell. When Draden gets infected he forces his team to leave him behind. He won't risk exposing anyone else. He intends to find the ones responsible and go out in a blaze of glory...
Shylah Cosmos's mission is to track the virus and remain unseen. Her enhanced senses tell her that the gorgeous man eradicating the terrorists one by one is a GhostWalker — and his lethal precision takes her breath away. When he's hit by a lucky shot she can't stop herself from stepping in, not knowing that by saving his life she's exposed herself to the virus...
There's no telling how much time Draden and Shylah have left. Racing to find a cure, they quickly realize that they've found their perfect partner just in time to lose everything. But even as the virus threatens to consume their bodies, they've never felt more alive.

GhostWalker Research Part 2 of 4: From Psychics to Superconductors

How much paranormal is real? How much fiction turns to non-fiction when an author’s imagination takes over while reading science magazines? You might be surprised!
I am always reading science journals or online articles. I check out any new science news as well as researching old experiments.
Using psychic abilities for military purposes is not new. It’s been researched. There have been experiments. I think there always will be because there’s some fact to it. Enough to keep governments interested. So it was easy to make that part of my GhostWalker mythology.

PSYCHIC ABILITY IN WARFARE
The possibility of psychic ability has been around for ages. But during the cold war and WWII it is thought that even the government became a believer. In 1995 an experiment called Operation Stargate was de-classified and released to the public. In this experiment the CIA and the US military allegedly used soldiers with psychic propensities to train as remote viewers. They were trained to "see" war bunkers and other secret information from great distances. At the program's peak in the late 70's there were six of these "remote" viewers, also known as The Naturals, working for the United States.
I had a lot of fun researching superconductors when I started writing the GhostWalker series.
SUPERCONDUCTOR
In Shadow Game there is reference to a superconductor. According to http://www.superconductors.org, a superconductor is an element, compound, or alloy that will conduct electricity below a certain temperature without resistance. The key term here is "without resistance", because this means a superconductor can create a virtual seamless flow of electrical current. Superconductivity was first observed in 1911 by Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes of Leiden University. He noticed the phenomenon of superconductivity in Mercury and won a Nobel Prize in 1913 for his research into this field. The possibilities for uses of superconductivity are virtually limitless. There are already great advances into transportation, medical technologies (such as MRI's) and more efficient electrical generators.

I thought that a laser glass cutter was the coolest thing and was so happy I was able to use it in Mind Game!

LASER GLASS CUTTERS
A laser glass cutter is a tool that uses light to cut through glass. It focuses light to vaporize material; similar to the way a magnifying glass can be focused to start a fire. These tools are commonly used industrially. Glass cutters can also be portable and subsequently used in cutting through windows to gain access to a building or vehicle.
In Night Game I introduced an interesting weapon that uses sound. People don’t realize how many uses sound has or what a strong sonic wave can do.

SOUND AS A WEAPON
Sound is a powerful thing. The human ear is capable of hearing only a small range of the available known sound. In fact we are only able to hear between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. Anything below this range is infrasonic and anything above is ultrasonic. It is possible to use this infrasonic and ultrasonic sound as a weapon. A focused sound wave can be used to strike an object. If infrasound hits a human, depending on its concentration and strength it can cause symptoms ranging from mild nausea, dizziness to heart failure and death. There are many sites on the internet with interesting articles on this subject.
For more information visit:
• Fortean Times: Sonic Weapons
You just never know what real science will inspire for science fiction. As someone who loves research and who loves to include as much fact as possible in the stories I write, the GhostWalker series is like a playground for my mind.

Toxic Game: Life or Death Love Affair
What would you do if you knew you only had a handful of days to live? How would that affect how you act and what you say?

This question intrigued me as I began to write Toxic Game, knowing already that the danger the hero and heroine would face had to do with bio-warfare and having to stop the threat of a pandemic.
While Draden and Shylah are determined to complete their mission they face the fact that they may be infected with a deadly hemorrhagic virus that has no known cure.
Since they’ve become a unit in this mission they’re thrown together in a way that forces trust, but it also extends a level of intimacy. With only one person to share your feelings with, to share your fears with how would that affect you?

Neither Draden or Shylah would waste a lot of time feeling sorry for themselves. They were trained soldiers and that just wasn’t an option to them. But, to get through what they saw as their final days I knew they’d both want to take care of the other person. And when you know you don’t have to face the consequences of your actions then why not be totally honest and ask for the things you want before you die?

Time wasn’t going to be their friend in many ways, but recognizing there wasn’t going to be a lot of time made each minute count. It would make them realize that “now” was the best time to say or do what they wanted or needed. People think they have all the time in the world, but the fact is, you don’t. That’s just an illusion. We are faced with mortality and we really don’t know when our number is up. Knowing you’re last days are upon you could be freeing in a way. I wanted to convey that with this couple.

It was important to me that readers realize that, no matter what, this couple was meant to be. There’s something about being put into a life or death situation that can cause people to have intense feelings for one another that can fade once that danger is over. It made me up my own game writing the romance between them and I believe the result is that Draden and Shylah have become one of the most romantic couples I’ve ever written.
