Redefining Success Beyond Money and Power? From Ariana Huffington's Bed?
Did they not realize the irony of their new definition of success being announced from a bed? Not Sex Objects? Looks like she traded a bit on sex from THESE pictures.

Insights from their personal and professional lives? In between panel discussions, the women jumped into Huffington's bed for an on-camera chat.
So, this "Nasty Woman" was a leader of the Woman's March and the "Me Too" movement? Yet, these women seem to send the message that a part of their strength IS their sexuality. "Nasty" woman? Crude vulgarity? What message are they sending? 


You are a Feminist only if you support abortion. That is required in Feminist dogma.


Me Too, Willy! These women claim to be role models?

Little Girl Lost: COULD HAVE BECOME A  FEMINIST CASUALTY had a loving mother not given her life.When did the ME TOO movement become a WITCH HUNT AND A SHAKEDOWN?

WHEN DID THE ASSUMPTION THAT ALL POWERFUL WOMEN ARE FEMINISTS OCCUR?

Can you imagine Margaret Thatcher bouncing around on Ariana Huffington's bed like adolescents at a pajama party discussing a new definition of success? (All the while Mika is apparently carrying on an affair with the former Samson of the Republican party while lecturing the rest of us on morality. The hypocrisy of these people continues to amaze me! Getting promoted because of the contacts of her father, finding her "voice" by sitting next to Joe Scarborough and she is a role model for young women? She talks the talk of the feminist ideology and therefore she is an icon of their movement.)

 But then, their definition of morality is different than that of most Americans. Their morality is not individual, but group. You must pay homage to the god of death with total obeisance to Abortion on Demand, to Euthanasia, to No Borders, to pure faith in Climate change (no replicable data), to sexual promiscuity, to disrespecting our military and and every other tenet of the Progressive ideology?

No God. No absolutes.  If you say the right words and write a check to to the right causes you are a moral person. Oh, yes, you might pat yourself on the pink va jay jay cap, sign of your individuality, as to what a "moral" individual you are while throwing stones at someone else's presumed immorality.

So the current god of this world is the Lord of Misrule, the ME TOO movement that goes hand and hand with the Woman's March. Listen to the words that come out of those women's mouths! And they expect respect? They are free to do whatever they want with their bodies and, when men take them up on their offer -- making the Feminist Movement actually a liberation movement for Men freeing them of any responsibility for taking these women up on their blatant offers of sex -- they cry foul!

After years of currying favor with the men in power that help them along their way to becoming powerful, successful, wealthy women, suddenly they decide they have been abused and with two words "Me Too" regain their power? What they have done is create a situation where men will fear hiring women.

They had power all along. You just say no. If a man invites you to his apartment, you say no. If you go to his apartment and he greets you in a bathrobe you turn and walk away. If he overpowers you and rapes you, you call the police and report the event. There are consequences in every event, should you press charges or accept and overcome. But, if you are a powerful, strong woman you do not let events determine your future or selfish, egotistical men rob you of your happiness.

Nor do you revel in bringing strong men down. 



Disrespected? Another millennial snowflake. What had she done to earn respect? This older gentleman paid her a compliment. She may have reminded him of a daughter. Yet, she was so full of herself, she presumed he was "sexually harassing her". What contempt for his uniform! What contempt for his position. What contempt for his family!

She was someone for whom he had been willing to lay down his life. Did he put a hand on her? Proposition her? He called her "sweetheart." God forbid this woman ever face a terrorist or have to defend our country in any manner.

Could she possibly have said, "Sir, Sweetheart is a word I find demeaning and I would appreciate your not calling me that." No, she ran home to tattle to the member of Congress for whom she worked and plotted to ruin a man's life rather than standing up for herself. There is a group there in Washington out to weaken our country by emasculating our men and undermining our culture. You notice, her name is not given here. Who else saw this exchange? On her word alone a man's career is damaged.

She was a Congressional staffer. Now we know where the Swamp folks gather. Just follow her around. I wonder for whom she works.

She demeans the experiences of women who have truly endured abuse.

This man has stood up to terrorists and armed combatants all over the world but a princess who should be home preening in front of a mirror wearing her tiara brings him down.

I am ashamed of womankind at the distance down we have jumped from the pedestal of fidelity, honor and integrity, the hand that rocks the cradle that ruled the world, women once occupied to be the whiny, wallow in the filth of sexual promiscuity and then respect me in the morning excuses for a female that demand respect for being strong and capable when they display none of that!

"Older women are to teach the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children and to be keepers of the home."

Obviously God knows we need direct instruction. Teach is an action verb. Love is an action verb. To be a Keeper takes a LOT OF ACTION.

Being a Keeper of the Home does not refer to housework. It does imply being the most secure part of the home on which all may depend and repair to for safety (the keep of the castle), the one who keeps the light shining forth to show the shoals of life and bring all within her scope home safely (the keeper of the lighthouse).

This person has the most important job of all as giver of life and keeper of the sanctity of that home. She has the hand that rocks the cradle that rules the world whether she stays home and works or works outside the home.

I look at the women above. I hear the words that issue forth from their mouths and I cringe. Where is Dignity? Where is Honor? Where is the self-sacrifice necessary to raise another generation to take their place in this world?




Cornelia was respected as the role model for women who sought to be all she could be. One whose children would "rise up and call her blessed." 


And so, because the honored responsibilities of womankind are so dismissed and dishonored, The Horned God of Misrule rules. It is Feminists who wear the Masks of Misrule suspending the normal rules of society.

Parents have rights Against Intrusive Surveys PROTECTION OF PUPIL RIGHTS AMENDMENT and SEL (Social Emotional Learning)

 Did you know your schools are asking intrusive questions that violate the Protection of Pupil Rights Act?

Right to Privacy AFFECTIVE EDUCATION NOT ONLY MEASURES ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS BUT CHANGES THEM TO FIT POLITICALLY CORRECT VALUES

If I Ruled the Schools... A New Years Day Reflection
I guess it is because it is New Years Day that made me start thinking of what I would do if someone gave me a mandate to fix our schools.


My educational theory: The Golden Rule should rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. You avoid creating the bad social situations that all the social programs are developed to alleviate by simply giving our children THE VERY BEST ACADEMIC EDUCATION POSSIBLE in a safe environment. That is the mission of the school. If the schools can achieve that goal, then they have made their greatest contribution to society -- morally sound, capable students because they can read and have been given the greatest pieces of literature to read. These students have much less chance of becoming homeless, hopeless and helpless. Anything else is between the child and his/her parents using their own library card and imparting their own religious education (I refer to the established religion of Secular Humanism with its New Age Techniques currently in the schools), but WILL NOT COME INTO A CLASSROOM if I ruled the schools. The story of William Hampton Flowers would serve as inspiration to us all. You never know who might be observing and what a difference your behavior at any moment might make to the future not only of you but that of your children through many generations.
 I would make sure we had a good lawyer willing and capable of standing up for our children and challenging the courts that would challenge us. I can only imagine the forces that would come against us beginning with the Teachers Unions and Colleges of Education that see the schools as their own laboratory and our children as their guinea pigs.Every school would pledge allegiance to the flag and sing the Star Spangled Banner along with the tape on the sound system of the school. That is the beginning of national pride and respect for authority. I would have children consider the greatest of writers and reflect upon the meaning of their words. Why did these writers' works achieve the test of time? Because their thoughts are those pondered by all great men and women.

Next I would go to each individual school to address the parents. In Arizona, it was parent groups that studied the methods that work and chose the program they wanted for their school. Several charter schools using the Spalding Writing Road to Reading sprang up with parents as well as teachers educating themselves in the method so they could tutor, not just the students in their school, but those that would come in from other schools and from out of town. (I would include administrative and support staff in this.) I would present to those parent groups the three models I know work for all children: Hillsdale College's Barney School, Spalding Writing Road to Reading and Marva Collins Great Expectations. I would love to present the ABEKA curriculum but the ACLU would come up against us because it has a Christian background. (While they have no problem with the establishment of the Secular Humanist religion and we should be fighting back. If we can just give children a highly moral, educationally effective curriculum, parents will be encouraged to deal with their faith.)I would challenge the leadership (and that includes the coaches) of those schools to shape up or ship out (another reason for good lawyers because some of them would have to be shipped out). If their grammar is so poor they cannot be an example of an educated leader, then they can improve their grammar (lifelong learning) or sacrifice leadership. If they are not willing to walk the halls and KNOW what is going on in the classroom and that it is in line with the method chosen then they should step down willingly. If they are not convicted that children can learn and teachers can teach if given the right tools, they should be reassigned. John Winston (Spalding Writing Road to Reading) found many reluctant teachers who had been brainwashed that Phonics was drill and kill who were reluctant to put everything into their teaching. He had them do it anyway and in the end, they were as sold on the program as he was. But you have years of indoctrination to overcome and it takes a STRONG LEADER to do so. Degrees in education do not make a good teacher or administrator. It takes DEDICATED TEACHERS AND STRONG LEADERSHIP to set the standard for the school.  Every school would become a charter school per se to free them from the restrictions of what the School Board has bound them to with money taken for computers and laptops, etc. to align them with COMMON CORE (selling their soul to the devil in the process to my way of thinking). Every school board member would visit the schools, eat with the children in the lunchroom, observe how the teachers dress and their demeanor, how they enforce discipline and interact with the students. I would rewrite the by-laws that bind the schools to the Goals 2000 stupidity of making instruction Thematic rather than Sequential. And so much more that I am not even aware of. (See why you need a good lawyer? Money better spent there than tying us to another stupid "innovation" to try and undo the failure of the last stupid "innovation!")I would talk to the support staff on how important their conscientious efforts to make the schools shine is to the success of the school. When the bathrooms are clean and sparkling and the halls waxed and shining, a child takes pride in his school. School Council work days would indicate pride in the school and a willingness to be a handmaiden to the excellence of their children's success. An education is a gift to our children from the community, but the willingness to humble oneself to work for the school's excellence would build character. Parents need to set the example. A website is a first clue as to the attention a leader is paying to every aspect of the school he/she leads. The computer would become a tool and not a teacher. There would be NO ONLINE EDUCATION. Teachers could enhance their lessons with computer visuals, but the students would learn Math the old-fashioned way (Saxon Math, perhaps?) without calculators so when the power goes out he/she is not handicapped and embarrassed. A parent/citizen committee watch dog would read and review EVERY BOOK PROPOSED BY A TEACHER to use in a classroom. Consideration would be paid to the images the book evokes and whether it is age appropriate for the children of that class. NO MORE DARE. NO MORE DEATH EDUCATION.NO MORE THERAPEUTIC CLASSROOM.NO MORE SEX EDUCATION. (Biological information pure and simple in Biology class.) NO MORE MULTICULTURALISM.NO MORE TRIBALISM AND NEW AGE TECHNIQUES IN THE SCHOOLS. What matters is the content of character, not the nationality or color of skin. NO MORE VALUES CLARIFICATION.NO MORE GROUP AND CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING (Where one child does the work and everyone else gets the grade.) No more modeling behavior to form socialist attitudes and beliefs.NO MORE PEER TUTORING (Where one child sacrifices their opportunity to lift another. Students are not teachers. Both children lose because the one who needs the help does not need another child's help, but the teacher's!)Secular Humanism WOULD NOT BE THE RELIGION OF THE SCHOOLS!It is my belief that God warns of imparting the "knowledge of good and evil" and tells us to think of "whatsoever is good, whatsoever is pure, whatsoever is of good report, think on these things." Other than that we produce the current nihilism and amorality of our schools with more suicide and drug use.Only quality literature would be in the classroom, beginning with Marva Collins' list of books for every age. Community advisory committees would be called upon to review books.EVERY CHILD WOULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TO READ PHONETICALLY. EVERY CHILD WOULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN TO COMPUTE WITH METHODS FREE OF POLITICS--BASED ON THE ABSOLUTES OF MATHEMATICS THAT SENT AMERICANS TO THE MOON.Teacher certification would not matter. In fact, in Panama City there are many retired military who have experience that would benefit the students of our schools. You're heard the old adage: Those who can do, those who can't do teach, those who can't teach teach teachers. Retired engineers can do and some can teach. Why should they have to take education courses to certify them in methods proven NOT TO WORK TO EDUCATE CHILDREN BY TEACHERS WHO CAN'T TEACH? Have you ever looked at elementary math classes? And these people educated in those methods are supposed to know how to prepare our children for the demands of tomorrow?I would love to have a school that was all female and one that was all male to give every child the opportunity to flourish in the environment that best suits the child according to the parents' choice. In the all female and the all male environment, I would encourage retired military to take the leadership in that school to give those children the role model they need and offer ROTC for a military career, should a child so desire. Leadership from the School Board and central office would be in every school. Leadership in every school would be alert to any moral impropriety or lack of supervision and correct that immediately. Cameras in every room would allow the administration of every school to observe the classrooms to make sure that discipline was enforced and moral turpitude nipped in the bud immediately. Teachers involved in such behavior would be fired immediately and not given access to children again. (Another reason for good lawyers.) Students misbehaving would be sent to an Alternative School.Teachers would dress professionally and always set an example. Teachers would take turns as Bathroom/hall monitors. Principal would patrol the halls and make his/her presence known throughout the day in every area of the school.Every school would have uniforms and every student would realize they represent that school wherever they go.NO FUNDRAISERS WOULD BE ALLOWED IN THE SCHOOLS. After school clubs would incorporate special projects. But there would also be other clubs the Key Club, Drama Club, Spirit Club, Debate Club, Chess Club, Future Farmers Club, etc. These could have a Service Project -- but no child would get out of class for any of these. Secondary schools would have a seven period day with required subjects: English, Math (Algebra or higher as they progress in school) History (chronological not thematic), Science (Biology and physical), Foreign Language, Physical Education, Computer programming, Music, Art, Chorus or Study Hall (for extra help or homework). Everyone should be aware that like the old saying, "Why does a bank robber rob a bank? Because that is where the money is." One SADLY MUST REMEMBER "Why does a pedophile become a teacher? Because that is where the children are." It is the responsibility of Leadership to protect our children. (That includes Administrators, teachers, staff and support staff. It also includes volunteers. Each individual plays a vital role in the development of our children.)I would put the finest leaders in the most "at risk" schools. I would encourage them to take those positions to recruit the very best teachers-- those committed to truly carrying through on the method chosen by the parent groups to best teach their children (of the three recommended).I would then look at the results on an old standardized test (not the new attitude and belief tests geared to COMMON CORE and Bill Gates computers) administered at the first of the year and compare it to the results at the end. And I would give bonuses to teachers and ANY school that successfully brought student academic achievement up as evidenced by a valid achievement test like those of the past Not one of Jason Zimba's geared to COMMON CORE. Spelling bees would be reinstated with competition between the schools televised on the cable free channel. Math competitions would also be demonstrated encouraging competition between schools and individuals.  Manners and Etiquette Class would be taught at ALL SCHOOLS. Teaching young people to respect each other and their elders is important training and will enhance job opportunities later on. No individual should feel inferior in a career because they do not know which fork to use or how to dress for an occasion. (Read the story of William James Edwards 25 years in the Black Belt.) We would NOT LIMIT ANY CHILD BY ASSUMING ANYTHING ABOUT HIS/HER FUTURE based on their socio-economic or home situation. EVERY CHILD WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH A GOOD BASIC EDUCATION TO PURSUE ANY CAREER HE/SHE CHOOSES. NOT SOME WORKFORCE BOARD!Every year we would have a District Wide Talent Show for all children who want to participate, encouraging every child to develop their talents. The Talent show would be co-ordinated by the school councils and volunteers would work with children after school to participate. Leadership in administration would oversee all after school events. (That is part of a 12 month contract and the commitment of being a School Leader and earning the salary and respect that comes with that position.)And so now you know why I will never "rule the schools." I would be too much like Jesus when he  upset the tables running the money changers out of the Tabernacle.

That is pretty much what my hairdresser told me when I ran for the Dothan, Alabama school board in the early 90s. This is a speech I gave at that time. The hand out I refer to in this speech is something I shared with you when I wrote about the Bigotry of Low Expectations. Things are so much worse now!

 They were ignored. Yes We Can urged everyone to think happy thoughts and "be supportive" and we have been supportive-- right up to the abyss--Common Core.


(I have written a lot lately because I found a notebook with a collection of articles, news clippings, etc. from that time. Before I threw up my hands, retreated to my garden and started doing genealogy and writing books. It is interesting to reflect on where we were then and where we have come in the past nearly 30 years. God help us!

Common Core, Sylvia Plath, and Death Education




The other day, my 15 year old, extremely precocious granddaughter, got in the car with me and began a discussion on Sylvia Plath. Now, I have told you that she is precocious and I have given her great works of literature to read from my own library. A couple of years ago she read F. Scott Fitzgerald, O. Henry, and George Orwell, among many others. But I would never have given her ANYTHING by Sylvia Plath. Because the most important thing Sylvia Plath did was be depressed and -- commit suicide. I had the opportunity to discuss this with my grandchild. But the image had already been planted in her brain and there is nothing I can do to erase it. As they say, you cannot unring a bell. 
I wonder how many children have not had a grandmother/mother/father to be on guard as to the consequences of group psychotherapy practiced by untrained teachers. 
The suicide rate for girls ages 15 to 19 doubled from 2007 to 2015 when it reached the highest point in 40 years. That is about the time COMMON CORE (Progressive Education on Steroids) entered the scene. The article below relates the suicide rate to Death Education in our schools.  As a former secondary teacher, I will tell you that Middle School and High School students like to talk about death. And that is one excellent reason NOT TO. NOT SO WITH COMMON CORE. Apparently they enjoy the therapeutic classroom and their call to practice psychotherapy without a license through "lesson plans" like this in "Health Education." Right up there with the DARE program. 



I understand "Integrating the curriculum." Death Education can very well be "integrated" into the English Language Arts curriculum so parents cannot "opt out." Guess who appears in the curriculum with COMMON CORE STANDARDS.


I think we read the Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner at that age with all of its classical allusions and imagery. But now, with Women's Studies being a part of Multiculturalism, we have reinvented our curriculum to fit the Feminist agenda. 

Sylvia Plath is a vehicle for both Death Education and Feminism. 


Fits in quite well with the philosophy of exposing students to Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and its nihilistic world view.

Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
It’s not a cry that you hear at nightIt’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.
 Over 50,000 American teenagers have committed suicide since the introduction of death education in America's public schools in the early 1970s according to the 1990 article written by Samuel Blumenfeld. The number is oh so much greater now!

 Look at the jump in suicide rates in the 10 to 24 age group. 
I have already brought to your attention the increasing use of drugs AFTER the DARE program came into use in our schools. Let me also suggest to you that using children for projects meant to save the world intrudes upon their opportunity to be children and contributes to depression and hopelessness.



Let me also draw your attention to the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, a favorite in California for 4th graders. Your librarian and teacher will tell you it is a Newberry Award winning book. But, I have never taken the chance of letting my children read something I had not read. Unfortunately, I am now just the grandparent and do not have access to their ONLINE books. Be on guard parents!

Tales from the Crypt. True Stories of Our Dead Schools.





They might as well have been talking about COMMON CORE. It is OBE (Alabama First/Kentucky Education Reform Act/ Outcomes Based Education/Goals 2000 whatever you want to call it) but now turned into COMMON CORE EBOLA in its most virulent form.

Just read what these folks saw happening in their schools.

The Kentucky Education Reform Act was one of many of those "grassroots" reform acts written by Marc Tucker and David Hornbeck in the early 90s. This was the National Center for Education and the Economy setting us for a revolution in education that coincided with the political Progressive Whole Language radical agenda. The public was just a bunch of sitting ducks processed through the Delphi Method along with the Chamber of Commerce allied with the Education Establishment to revolutionize education.

It failed in every aspect that parents expected of schools and created even more illiteracy. More violence in the schools. More learning disabled. But, the stories that came out of Kentucky could have been from every state.

You will relate to this.



2nd grader bought home book about a vacuum aspiration abortion. Moral? she was glad to be free of the baby.


Reminds me of Lois Lowry's The Giver. Did you ever read that? You should. Your children have probably been required to do so. They will tell you it is a Newberry Award winning book. And I will tell you that some of the imagery in that book is not for elementary students. Teachers love it for the discussions -- way beyond the depth for elementary children. The therapeutic classroom once again at work. I can only wonder at the impact on individual children with teachers practicing psychotherapy.

Peer Tutoring. Peer Teaching. Invasion of Privacy. All accepted now. 

Death Education 






Intrusive questions about the children's families, homes, income, amount of books in the home. This tea was an invasive social survey masquerading as a test!  It is happening here as well. I have reports from Dothan and Panama City about intrusive social surveys -- and questions about guns. 









 Will Stay on Your Record Forever

My son was "evaluated" by the state this year. The high school seniors were required to take special "tests". The all important will stay on your record forever assessment task my son was given was to evaluate a 10 minute ballet video. This might have been a valid classroom activity for fostering creative dance interpretation, but what did it have to do with what he has learned these past four year? He has made excellent grads and has had several fine teachers, but none in ballet. this type of evaluation has cost us, the taxpayers, millions of collars for such nonsense.

I expect my son to be prepared for ACT and SAT college exams. I expect him to be prepared with facts and real skills. I am not seeing the type of preparation through this reform act. It is educationally unsound.

Too much value is being placed on opinion and viewpoint and if the "evaluator" doesn't agree with the opinion or manner in which it is expressed, the student receives a lower grade. A student who is more "adaptable and flexible" (a learning goal of the program) is given a higher score. Many of the questions and the "appropriate answers" are intrusive and objectionable to many teachers and parents across the state. Some of the questions include opinions about "alternative perspectives" and even life itself. A fourth-grade class was assessed not their answers to the question, "Is suicide ever justified?"





 At an elementary school in Louisville, I observed a library committee that traveled all over the system taking books out that would be sold at a book sale. When I asked how they decided which ones they should remove, I was told that one of the criteria was the picture. If a book had a picture of a family with a Mom, Dad and child, t was removed so that the child who did not have two parents would not feel bad if he/she read the book. 





PAY ATTENTION FOLKS. THIS IS IN STONE IN COMMON CORE.







Whole Education --- must aim primarily not at the stuffing knowledge but at building (youth) who are physically (and mentally healthy to the core." ... (It) stresses the importance of training youth in Community or National Service. Each child will have a Performance Record in which will be recorded his/her ____including his/her ideological (social, political, economic, growth ... in training for life and work.


REMIND YOU OF ALL THOSE SERVICE PROJECTS EVERY SCHOOL IN BAY DISTRICT SCHOOLS REQUIRES STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN?  




One has only to remember the Hitler Youth Groups to feel qualms about government control of values in education. When a computer becomes the teacher rather than a tool, society needs to take another look at its use in education. With computers as teachers, whoever is in charge, whether he be a Gandhi or Hitler, will have control of the generations of tomorrow by controlling our children's attitudes and beliefs.

THE TRUTH ABOUT PHONICS THAT WILL HELP YOU HELP YOUR CHILD! WHOLE LANGUAGE: A FRAUD PERPETRATED UPON OUR STUDENTS. ONE OF MANY?

WHOLE LANGUAGE/PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION READING REFORM
With about fifty percent (47%) of Bay District Schools students unable to read proficiently there is still a very big problem. How many of these children are labeled Learning Disabled? How many are teaching disabled because they are still using a failed method of teaching reading. And why? If John Winston could take a 98%minority school that served 3 housing projects in Natchitoches, Louisiana (Parks Elementary) and bring the usual 40 learning disabled to one or two and end disciplinary problems merely by changing the reading method to the Spalding Writing Road to Reading (an effective Phonics program) why would Bay District Schools hesitate?  Too much invested in the old method? (Dothan's excuse in 1992).

Thank you Whole Language. Thank you for your many pearls of wisdom. Thank you for Context Clues. Thank you for Prior Knowledge. Thank you for the Initial Consonant. Thank you for Picture Clues. Thank you for Miscues.
But most of all, thank you for my wife. The other day she and I were riding along the highway and saw a sign for a town called Verona , so my wife read "Veronica". It's very simple, you see. First she applied Context Clues (she knew we were looking for a name). Then she applied the Initial Consonant ("V"). Then she applied Prior Knowledge (she already knew of a name "Veronica"). She put these Whole Language strategies together and ... success! At least, as much success as we can expect, I suppose.
Thank you William S. Gray for inventing "Look-Say" and the "Dick and Jane" series of basal readers. Thank you A. Sterl Artley for helping Mr. Gray and for your phonics-bashing diatribes of the 1950s and 1960s. Thanks to the National Education Association for giving Mr. Gray and his friends two years of free promotion in the NEA Journal in 1930 and 1931. Together you all had managed to essentially eradicate phonics from America 's public schools by the 1950s and early 60s, when my wife went to school.
But more importantly, thank you for my wife. Awhile back she was reading a pamphlet about something that was described as "venerable". Now that's a word you don't see every day, so what did she do but cleverly pull out her Whole Language skills? Context Clues, you see, told her that she was looking for an adjective. Next was the Initial Consonant "V". Then out came the Prior Knowledge -- she simply thought of an adjective she already knew that was about the right length and started with "V". And voila ... success again ... she came up with "vulnerable". Perfect! Well, at least as perfect as things get in publik ejukayshun, right?
Thanks Kenneth Goodman for reviving the floundering Look-Say, adding a few New Age twists and renaming it Whole Language back in the early 80s. Just like the Whole Earth Catalog and Whole Grains and everything else that was Whole ... what else could it be but wonderful? Without you, Kenneth, the evils of phonics might have returned, and then where would we have been?
Thank you Dorothy Strickland for "Emerging Literacy" -- the idea that kids are naturally inclined to read if only we will surround them with literature. Thanks to all the other Whole Language textbook authors who cranked out textbook after textbook that either omitted phonics entirely or disparaged phonics openly. Thank you Teachers College, Columbia for promoting Whole Language to teachers' colleges worldwide. Can you even imagine how effective you were in eradicating phonics instruction throughout the English-speaking world?
Thank you International Reading Association (IRA) and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). For decades you appointed people like William S. Gray and Kenneth Goodman to lead your entire organizations in the fight against phonics. Somehow you raised hundreds of thousands or perhaps millions of dollars to pay PR firms to get their opinions so heavily quoted in the press that the public is now completely confused in its ideas about what works and what doesn't work in reading instruction.
But once again thank you for my wife. Awhile back she was reading about some Congregational Church. And do you know, even with the Context Clues and the Prior Knowledge (about what names churches might have, presumably) and the Initial Consonant, she still managed to come up with "Congressional Church". Even though this was years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday.
Thank you Alfie Kohn and Dennis Baron and Mike Ford and Gerald Coles and Harvey Daniels and Gerald Bracey and Susan Ohanian and Stephen Krashen and Jim Trelease and all the other propagandists who lash out continuously against successful practice in general and phonics in particular. Through your tireless efforts, the public is continually misinformed. Without the public's perpetual state of confusion and misinformation, Whole Language would not have survived a single day. Thank you for keeping Look-Say and Whole Language and Balanced Literacy alive to create yet another generation of people who can read as well as my wife does.
Speaking of my wife, last night she was reading a brochure aloud about a museum with an "eclectic" collection, and what do you suppose she said? You guessed it (and so did she): "electric"! Maybe the absence of the Initial Consonant threw her off.
Thank you Marie Clay for inventing the phenomenally expensive Reading Recovery, a program installed in virtually every public school, it seems, and designed to treat the educational effects of Whole Language by applying yet more Whole Language. Thank you for giving my school district more stuff like this to spend my tax money on. How is it that I am not clever enough to imagine things like this?
Thank you Richard Allington, current (2005) president of the International Reading Association, for your campaign of misinformation against Direct Instruction (a successful phonics-based program). The cleverness of your propaganda puts the Soviets, the Chinese Communists, and all the other tyrants of the 20th century to shame. You know of course that Direct Instruction (DI) participated in a huge study (Project Follow Through) in which all the participants except DI failed, and in which DI succeeded brilliantly. And so you twist this around to say that by virtue of its association in this study with the constructivist-favored instructional styles that failed so miserably, we should all conclude that DI must necessarily also have been a failure. Your logic, so typical of that of the IRA, the NCTE, and the rest of the Constructivist Cabal, is irrefutable.
But once again thank you all for my wife. Hardly a day goes by when she does not demonstrate the success of Look-Say, or Whole Language, or Balanced Literacy or whatever you all call it now. Really, it's so amusing I really can't even quantify it. I never know what she'll read next ... and neither does she! Just imagine all her Miscues!
The sheer unpredictability of listening to her read is astounding ... and unpredictability is the essence of entertainment, right? I mean, she might read "deleterious" as "delicious" or perhaps "injurious" as "injustice" or "parabola" as "parachute" or maybe "quintessence" as "quintuplet", or "signify" as "signature". I could go on and on almost endlessly. The laughs just never stop here. And all thanks to you. All of you.
So thank you, Whole Language. Where would we be without you? The possibilities just boggle the mind.

WhyThis is so important for parents with children having problems learning to read to understand.
Margaret McEathron tells you how her involvement in Reading Reform began:

Three of these children tested out with genius I.Q.'s-- the rest were average to high average. All were bewildered, confused, and convinced there must be "something wrong with them!" Even though they wouldn't say so in any adult's range of hearing! For all of them, the look and guess systems (Look Say/Whole Word/ Whole Language/Eclectic/We Do Teach Phonics Pretenders) gave them no sure clues that thee was a sure science and certain sure rules they could work, themselves. The next try at a word, you know--it could be a "wrong guess" -- again.

Many, too, like our eldest daughter, just scraped a passing grade in spelling. Even with drill, drill, and repeated writing effort, they were losing the Battle of Spelling.







The Epidemic of Reading Disabilities 



Very important. I remember volunteering at an After School Assistance Program run by Marla Newman, wife of Malcolm Newman, a prominent Black attorney in Dothan, Alabama. There was a precocious Black boy who wanted to get through with his homework quickly. He had to write his vocabulary words several times. He misspelled the words the first time and, of course, could not sound it out. The position of letters in the word meant nothing to him. The letters were all there but not in the order that made the word he meant to be writing. Bless his heart. Not only had it not dawned on him that reading ran from left to right across the page, but that letters went together to make sounds that made the word. 
Read the article below to understand how this happens. 












This is from the Whole Language Catalog by Ken and Yetta Goodman. Look how much of this is incorporated into COMMON CORE. Encourages students to take risks and to appreciate their "mistakes" as a necessary part of the learning process. (Unfortunately, this also encourages them to pet wolves to "face their fears." Believes that language conventions (such as punctuation or spelling) are learned in context and through authentic use, not through isolated skills. Thematic unit study in which students explore subjects in-depth (inch wide mile deep) NOT SEQUENTIAL LEARNING Thoughtful discussions in which students are challenged to ask questions (the Therapeutic Classroom where teachers ask intrusive personal questions that SHOULD BE PROTECTED BY HIPPA LAWS and FERPA LAWS) Attitudes and Beliefs are targets here. Hands on, problem-solving learning experiences (Reinvent the wheel. Do not stand on the shoulders of giants and progress further on learned information)YOU WILL NOT SEE PHONICS TAUGHT IN ISOLATION. (And so ANOTHER GENERATION OF ILLITERATES!!!! THESE WHOLE LANGUAGE SOLDIERS STILL CONTROL YOUR SCHOOLS!Since we want to help children become independent learners, it is best to ask open-ended questions such as "What do you think?" rather than to give them the answers. (Values Clarification and undermining of ABSOLUTES) Leave toys and food inter original containers that have pictures and bring on them. Probably more than any other psychological theorist Vygotsky assigned great prominence to formal education. He regarded schools (and other informal educational situations) not only as central contexts for enculturation and mastery of society's key tools and technology (such as written language and mathematics), but as the best "cultural laboratories" to study thinking: socially and historically created settings, characterized by special modes of discourse, and specifically designed to modify thinking. 


Vygotsky regarded education not only as central to cognitive development, but also as the quintessential sociocultural activity. Although he was clearly interested in how thought developed phylogenetically and socio-culturally, his work focused primarily on the social origins and cultural bases of individual development. He argued that uniquely human psychological process developed in children through social enculturation; through the acquisition of society's technology, its signs and tools and through education in all its forms. 




Remember this was the 90s. With Common Core it is SO VERY MUCH WORSE.





"New research prompted by our burgeoning national illiteracy (American Psychological Association, August, 1993) warns that an "educator should avoid relying exclusively on whole language techniques." Suspecting now that the whole language may, in fact be a barrier to literacy, they just might be willing to allow children some use of phonics some sounding out of letters and words, but by no mens will they temper their belief in "whole language methodology." 
So true. Read the Whole Language catalog excerpts. It is incredible that we have fallen for their Radical Education processes that REALLY CONSTITUTE THE WHOLE LANGUAGE/PROGRESSIVE AGENDA (COMMON CORE).

When one criticizes the modern mathematics program one often finds that the listener, wishing to be sympathetic and not knowing where to stand, remarks that undoubtedly the truth lies between the traditional and the modern mathematics versions. Such compromise may be correct in some controversies, but it is not applicable here. Reading and Writing the World with Mathematics: Toward a Pedagogy of Social Justice

Besides giving students a firm foundation for believing in absolutes, traditional mathematics gives them necessary tools for daily living (shopping, cooking, making and buying clothing, building homes, stewardship, etc. and the tools for subduing the physical universe for man's benefit (scientific technology). 
Leads students to worship God as the Master Designer and Orderer of the universe. 
Teaches from concrete to abstract--line upon line, precept upon precept. Recognizes he nature of the child as created by God and fallen. Uses a great deal of drill and rote memory, because this is how God created little children to learn. Children's learning must go from the known to the unknown.

Now, let me give you the curriculum my children had in the ABEKA school in Dothan, Alabama. As a teacher and parent, I liked being able to look at the curriculum book that guided the teachers. It was comforting to know that they would get the drill and reinforcement in areas that I knew were important for future success. But here, let me just show you:

Look at what grade level these children scored. This was in the 80s. I wonder how much higher ABEKA schools score now after the lunacy of the COMMON CORE MATH.

Students in first grade using A Beka Book materials are performing approximately 1 1/2 years ahead of the national average, third grade 1 1/2 years ahead, fifth grade 2 years ahead, and seventh grade 2 to 2 1/2 years ahead using A Beka Book materials.




In our present technological age, excellence in mathematical skills is imperative for our nation to keep its technological lead in our economic world. 



What? They teach cursive? Why those children will be able to read their grandparents' notes as well as the Declaration of Independence AND the Constitution!

Now what about Math? And with no calculators or computers?

I have seen them compute long series in their heads. I had three children in this school. All scored extremely high on all standardized tests (Stanford Achievement Test (at least 90th percentile and often much, much higher) at that time. We should return to those tests and compare the scores. 
First they memorize these tables. 



















Then they are able to make these computations in their heads!















Ever think about what "the full harvest of apostasy" means?



        
A Christian teacher who fails to see the potential for harm in this list, particularly when reading recommendations one, two, three, five and six, is lacking experience or discernment. that problem solving be the focus of school mathematicsthat basic skills in mathematics be defined to encompass more than computational facilitythat mathematics programs take full advantage of the power of calculators and computers at all grade levels (Funny, those Silicon Valley gurus don't send their children to schools that use computers and calculators!)that success of mathematics programs and student learning be evaluated by a wider range of measures than conventional testingthat more mathematics study be required for all students and a flexible curriculum with greater range of options be designed to accommodate the diverse needs of student population



                       This is where we are. Those emphasizing Academics were overrun by those who wanted Social Justice programs. Those like Paolo Freire, a hero of the Whole Language/Progressive Educational Movement now institutionalized in COMMON CORE.

 Wow! You can really teach children without computers or calculators. My oldest daughter went on with this education to actually BUILD computers as an electrical engineer with a computer specialty.

She could build computers AND with her degree in electrical engineering do other things.

THE REALITY OF BAY DISTRICT SCHOOLS. NEARLY FIFTY PERCENT OF BAY DISTRICT SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE NOT PROFICIENT AT READING.

If you are ever going to make something better you have to face the facts about Bay District Schools.

So when Niche says that 53% of students in Bay District Schools are Proficient Readers that means that Bay District Schools failed nearly half (or 47%) in the most basic goal of our schools.

And what does that 71% Average Graduation Rate mean? It means that 29% of 9th graders did not graduate. That means NEARLY 1 OUT OF 3 who enter the 9th grade will not graduate.

Now, you know how much attention I pay to the Reading ability of children. Because I saw so many of those children in my classrooms in Henry County, Alabama unable to read their textbooks. But it was "current wisdom," Dean Kunkel assured me when he could give me no research and it was the same everywhere! That was twenty something years ago. Things have only gotten worse.

So, do you do the same thing? Keep listening to the same experts? They're older now more advanced in their careers. Do you think they would give up their first born (their ideology and publications)?

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX. REFUSE TO FOLLOW THE CROWD AND FOLLOW THE RESEARCH! 
Let me refer you once again to the article I wrote on the Spalding Writing Road to Reading, a program that is exceedingly effective with all children, but particularly Minority Students, as proven by John Winston of Natchitoches, Louisiana.








Look at these schools, Lucille Moore Elementary, Oscar Patterson Elementary, Springfield Elementary! While all students would benefit, these at least deserve a program that has been proven to be effective for this group of children. 

Those schools have scored the lowest and have the greatest deficiency in Reading, the most basic skill for which these schools exist.  Let me point out to the Administration, Board and the Public that the students in those failing schools mirror those students with whom the Black principal and Natchitochez, Louisiana commission member, John Winston was charged to educate. Parks Elementary, served three housing projects and 96% minority school. The school board was desperate to find an answer and left it up to him. He took reluctant teachers to be educated in the Spalding method, but by the time of the middle of the year they were all enthusiastic. Their students went from the bottom to the top of the District.

He brought his students from the 25th percentile in reading to the 90th percentile, learning disabilities dropped from 40 to one or two and the discipline problems nearly disappeared. Shouldn't the children in Bay District Schools be given a chance? Especially since it is so inexpensive!!! No computer needed.

Look at these schools! Those children, victims of low expectations deserve better! The first one in this list is Oscar Patterson Elementary. 100% Economically Disadvantaged Students, 67.9 minority, Title I. Just exactly the school type that John Winston could have turned around with the Spalding Program.





Have you got that? Half of students grades 3 through 5 passed. HALF OF THE STUDENTS PASSED? Do you know what low reading scores in the third grade mean for those children? Have you any idea what a successful program could mean? 


It is not like you are taking a chance on lowering their opportunity here. You would be giving them at least a shot because what is happening now is TOTAL FAILURE. 
Why is there not rioting in the streets or has the POLITICS OF LOW EXPECTATIONS of disenfranchised minority and disadvantaged children making them throwaway children for whom they collect Title 1 money and then dismiss them? Common Core has failed our children. WHOLE LANGUAGE and PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION has failed our children.
With in depth analysis like this, the Education Reporter is well on her way to becoming Communications Director of Bay District Schools some day. Once again the Newspaper spun the issue "More than half" passed the English Language Arts and Math Exams and they are "proud"?!!!!!!!
University Academy is using something called First In Math. 

First in Math expresses disdain for using paper tests to promote basic number skills, replacing those basics with this computer program. Of course, that increases the cost of education with a program that will have to be updated at another cost, along with maintenance, while learning to use paper and pencil computation might actually be a more important skill in the long run. But, hey, these folks have been convinced by Bill Gates and his cohorts that they are getting a Rolls Royce, while I think it is another EDSEL.

But, I also noticed that First In Math acknowledges the need for SEQUENTIAL learning! "FIM employs a sequential approach to learning...."
That is very different from what our school board bylaws have been changed to since Goals 2000. The bylaws originally read that SEQUENTIAL instruction would be used. But, with the power of the Progressive Lobby that was changed to thematic instruction to bring about co-operative learning for their Radical Agenda. Follow the links below if you don't understand this. 
I also want to bring to the attention of the public that Bay District Schools continues to use their students for their social justice agenda giving these children the charge to change society by their service learning projects. These children need the opportunity TO BE CHILDREN! They do not need to be distracted from their academic challenges. It is not their job to change the world. They do not need to know about all the sad corners of our world. Let school be a safe place for their hearts and minds in addition to their physical security!
They do not need to be humiliated by being the kid that has to be in study hall because they didn't have a can of food to bring while others prance around in their pajamas at the pizza party because they were able to do so. I cringe thinking of those administrators/teachers that go to accept the honors (humbly in behalf of, I can just hear them say) gained by manipulating the little social justice soldiers into going door to door selling stuff. 
Quit producing the need for those special programs? Quit making potential homeless people by not teaching them to READ and CALCULATE!
Schools, perform your mission. Educate our children! 




There are methods that work! TRANSFORM THOSE SCHOOLS WITH SUCCESS!






I have NO FINANCIAL INTEREST IN THIS. I JUST WANT TO SEE THOSE CHILDREN BE SUCCESSFUL!



If you see this in your classroom grab your child's hand and run. Demand a Phonics based curriculum FIRST. Don't take a chance and let bad habits develop.

RUN AWAY FROM THIS!

Dr. Sylvia Farnham Diggory reports that children that learn to read phonetically also do better in Math. Their first abstract thought is relating the letter to the sound. However, if the Whole Language Method is used and guessing is conveyed as a strategy, that undermines the later conceptualization and abstract thought. So, the choice of curriculum is critical for a parent. That first choice may determine a child's future.

If a child is NOT A FLUENT READER BY THE THIRD GRADE that can be predictive of his future success. 

Reading proficient by the end of the third grade--a major predictor of future educational outcomes-- is one of the most important benchmarks in a child's academic journey. 

And then let them read...not the morally depraved intellectually bankrupt COMMON CORE pap, but the books on Marva Collins books list. And by the way, she taught those children with Professor Phonics Gives Sound Advice and Open Court Readers she salvaged from the garbage can when she was run out of the public schools because she actually taught the children in her class correct spelling (not inventive), correct grammar (not transformational) and the other teachers were jealous. 


We have a tendency in education to adhere to the modern premise that unless something is "relevant" to a child they cannot learn it.  Thus we forget the Bible injunction, "That which is good, that which is pure, that which is of good report...think on these things."   Many of the books below presented the "thoughts" that brought about our country's Constitution and Declaration of Independence.  Perhaps if we elevate our thoughts, we could elevate our country.  Perhaps "honor" might once again have meaning.The books listed immediately below are those which constitute the reading list for Marva Collins Westside Preparatory School.  She takes those children labeled "disadvantaged," "learning disabled," "ADHD," "not auditory," etc. and actually teaches them.

Her theory is that our children are not "learning disabled," we are "teaching disabled."  

To watch her in action is indeed watching a Master Teacher at work.
