The YES WE CAN MOVEMENT TO MANIPULATE ACQUIESCENCE TO COMMON CORE. I WARNED THEM.

The Cat in the Hat look at Education: THESE THINGS WILL NOT BITE YOU! THEY WANT TO HAVE FUN!
I wrote this article about seven years ago during the time I saw the Chamber of Commerce and the Education System once again manipulating public opinion. This time they were setting us for the great EBOLA EPIDEMIC OF EDUCATION NOW KNOWN AS COMMON CORE.
If there is anything I truly hate it is lies and manipulation. See also the Delphi Technique. Once again they manipulated the young teachers, those fresh out of those colleges of indoctrination (oh, education). Another WHOLE LANGUAGE HOOTENANNY only they were to young and eager to see it. After my letter to the editor, they wrote and took issue with my conclusions.
Dear Editor:Sometimes movies make great social commentary. Remember Monty Python’s "The Life of Brian"?
Brian: Look, you've got it all wrong! You don't need to follow me, you don't need to follow anybody! You've got to think for yourselves! You're all individuals!
The Crowd (in unison): Yes! We're all individuals!
Brian: You're all different!
The Crowd (in unison): Yes, we are all different! Man in Crowd: I'm not.
Another Man: Shhh!
YES WE CAN is a movement of "individuals" proclaiming a "grassroots movement" to improve our schools.
I have no sign in my yard. I guess "I’m not" an individual.
"Shhh!"
If we just think happy thoughts and spend more money we can make our schools "work". And if we just believe hard enough we can also bring Tinker Bell back to life.
Déjà vu all over again as Yogi Berra would say. We went through this in 1992 when a "Back to Basics" group of education traditionalists was steamrollered by those who "had a heart" for education. What has been the result? Nearly twenty more years of affective touchy-feely education and now, years later, we are in the same position we were then only much poorer and with more illiteracy…functional and cultural.
Systematic, intensive, direct and early phonics instruction makes eager young students proficient readers. It takes "Bear Bryant like" teachers, drilling students repetitively in the rules of our language so basic that if they are not proficient by the third grade then they will be handicapped for life. Then they must go past the self-indulgent "journaling" to actually teaching children how to write. Do today’s teachers even know the meaning of conjugating verbs and diagramming sentences as methods to instruct students in the basic rules of grammar?
The March 3rd issue of The Dothan Eagle carried an article describing a middle school "reading coach" dressing her students as characters from the Dr. Seuss books and taking them out of class to interrupt an elementary classroom in order to "help younger students learn to read." The twelve year olds got "jazzed up about being in a leadership roll." One student said the best part was "dressing up".
The failure of our schools lies squarely in the Colleges of Education which have promoted this frivolous masquerade and called it education. That is why we continue to have "reading coaches" in middle school when children should be proficient readers by third grade.
Remember the movie The Music Man? Professor Harold Hill came to town ready to make a buck off the hicks in River City by convincing them that his "think system" was sufficient for teaching children to play band instruments. He romanced the librarian who initially saw through the charlatan and charmed the citizens out of their hard earned dollars for uniforms and instruments. Then he hummed the tunes to his eager students and told them to think about the music. All they had to do was "want" to play those instruments…and then they could play!
Folks, Harold Hill is back in town only this time he comes dressed as the Cat in the Hat and he tells you that the predictability of the texts (guess at those words!) and getting kids jazzed about reading (let’s all have fun!) is going to produce readers.
All you individuals just believe.
But "I’m not" an individual.

Yes, Mrs. Ramsey, Whole Language was an approach that DCS used; however, that was about 19 years ago. Where have you been?? I read parts of your website. You have some great ideas, but many of your ideas are the some one that “Yes, We Can” and DCS advocate. I responded:
"when I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird a duck." Whole Word...Look Say...Whole Language...to whatever they call it now that duck is still a duck.
Whole Language has evolved to become EBOLA IN EDUCATION. It is more than Reading Instruction. It inculcates the entire Progressive Leftist Agenda to quit pretending they are concerned with academics. Their goal is the Social and Emotional development of the child. In plain lay terms, that means they are using behavioral techniques and the therapeutic classroom to change your child's attitudes and beliefs to their radical Social Justice agenda.
Just read their own words! Then check out the textbooks. Are they COMMON CORE aligned? Has your system bought Bill Gates computers for the testing and Pearson's Online books for your child's "education" (a.k.a. indoctrination.) If they are a company owned by Pearson, they are. Bay County has.

The seeds of Common Core Curriculum have grown and flourished since they were sown in Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. Then Jimmy Carter established the Department of Education and empowered an elite group bent on radical social change in America. Since then the edicts of those entities pretty much reflect the philosophies of Leftist revolutionaries who label themselves Progressives. Among their number is Paolo Freire, defrocked Jesuit priest, who led a movement called liberation pedagogy. One need only read the Whole Language Catalog by Ken and Yetta Goodman and Human Capital edited by David Hornbeck to understand that what the Progressives want is a total restructuring of society -- and they are well on their way of achieving it.

Rich Gibson, Associate Professor of Education at San Diego State University writes in Paulo Freire and Revolutionary Pedagogy For Social Justice:
"Could Freire's literacy for critical consciousness answer questions like: what must people know and, equally significant, how they must come to know it, in order to overcome exploitation and alienation? Can human creativity be unleashed in an increasingly undemocratic world? Can consciousness leap past exploitation--or repression? How do we spot lies? Can revolutionary pedagogy foment revolutionary social change, incorporating forms of consciousness that can also overturn the rise of new bosses, so we do not become what we set out to oppose? What might pedagogy have to do with overturning the subject-object split, the habitual subservience created both by capital and revolutionary organizations, that both Harvey and Freire, and the late George Lukacs, all said was central?
Freire insists, repeatedly, that no system of education is neutral. Bias is inherent in any selection and ordering of facts, the common project of social educators. One's understanding of how the democratic possibilities of citizenship might be achieved depends on a partisan assessment of current conditions, and where one wants to go: a political standpoint. Having already written about my concerns regarding the change in Mathematics education, I found this statement in Wikipedia regarding Freire particularly interesting:
"Freire's work has also influenced the so-called "radical math" movement in the United States, which emphasizes social justice issues and critical pedagogy as components of mathematical curricula."
Mrs. Ramsey, you really should visit any Dothan City School you like and observe what actually goes on there. After looking at your blog, I would like to reassure you that “progressive/whole language” instruction, as you call it, is not what’s going on in Dothan’s schools. Go visit and educate yourself.

What DCS releases in publicity blurbs is all I need to see to know that nothing has changed...except perhaps the labels. If I visit I will see hardworking teachers (my friends and neighbors) doing the best they can with the tools they have been given. Yet, as hard as they work, are there still classes in remedial reading at Wallace Community College. Are students still dropping out of school because they cannot perform well? How sad for everyone to be cheerleading a book and reading and still be locked out of the party because you cannot decode the words! My argument is with the Colleges of Education and the ideas they have passed off as effective education. If you step out of the "circle" of wagons you will be fired. We as teachers are a rather gullible lot. We want to believe that the tools we have paid good money to acquire and studied hard to master in order to get our diplomas have really been proven effective through replicable research and not affective criteria. I have been disillusioned time and again when I searched for that replicable research and could not find it.
Oh, yes...don't rock the boat...tenure is mighty comfortable. Put blinders on, just believe, and count out the days.
It is unfortunate that Mrs. Ramsey’s rant fairly drips with contempt for her fellow teachers. She should give them the benefit of the doubt. They’re not stupid and they do truly care about their duty to Dothan’s children. It was not necessary to insult them this way. It is also not clear if Mrs. Ramsey’s primary target is the schools or the Yes We Can movement. Given this ambiguous aim, and the generous use of “scare quotes”, I will assume that Mrs. Ramsey was upset when she wrote this, and perhaps deserves the benefit of the doubt herself.
I responded:
Rant? Sweetheart, that was not nearly the depth of my feeling. Our children do not have time to give this curriculum any further "benefit of the doubt." Guess what? The schools are not operated for teachers to have jobs. They operate to educate children.
"Scare quotes?" Those are directly lifted from the article. Upset? Your lack of understanding of the real problem is truly upsetting. Don't rock the boat, honey. You've got tenure and a wonderful retirement ahead. Don't bother your pretty little head about all those illiterate children that will be standing on the street corners as the result of your happy talk and the kumbayah-like YES WE CAN movement. The YES WE CAN movement is led by good-hearted people who really want the best for our children. Unfortunately, they want to believe in this newest push of old ideas now called "Education for the 21st Century" but even if we all believe like we did for Peter Pan when he told us that if we did we could bring Tinker Bell back to life...it won't make these foolish ideas for education effective...at least by my standard of effective and I think that is the standard most parents have for effective schools. I do not trust the vague fancy talk of that movement.
Just what are the details...have they actually produced what we want in our schools? What does preparing students to be "globally prepared for work" mean? I would hope our standards were higher than those of the Sudan, but maybe not. Do you know? Perhaps having twelve year olds march through schools dressed as the Cat in the Hat is sufficient for that standard. I just know the year I was twelve I asked for and received: Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology, Peyton Place, and Lady Chatterley's Lover, and that was after I had read all of the books in my Mother's library (which was extensive). Of course, I do not recommend those books for every twelve year old and certainly not for the schools to endorse. But, as I have said repeatedly, the schools should have a higher standard for the books they use. Censorship at home should be left to a child's parents. I could read. And the world was open to me because of it. I do not want one single child shut out from that wonderful, wonderful opportunity.
My point is...we Americans once set the highest bar for excellence. This United Nations movement...Education for the 21st Century dumbs us down. I do not think my critical thinking has suffered from not having been taught critical thinking. And personally, I want my children and grandchildren to be patriotic Americans, not good global citizens (especially if that includes buying trees in the rain forest). My perception of their version of "critical thinking" is merely to challenge patriotism and established standards of morality, and inculcate a loyalty to the environment and international institutions above our own. I'm sure you made friends in high places with the "courage" of your stand against a white haired (if I didn't dye it) old war horse (some might say battle axe).
I am nearly sixty years old. Will it bother me if you walk on the other side of the road because I dared to challenge the wisdom of a system that continues to fail? Yes, because I am sure I would really like you...and truth is, you would probably like me. But I have grown a few callouses since I ran for the school board in 1992 and saw the opponent's campaign run out of the central office. You and I have a difference of opinion...professionals with ideas...that should warrant debate and not the tyranny of the circle the wagons instinct of DCS...if you're not with us...you're against us.
When one's family is a potential client of an institution (and mine is) and one's tax dollars go to support it (I was born here and will be buried here) one should be involved and knowledgeable. Selecting the teachers for our child's education is like selecting a doctor for our child's physical health. We should have the opportunity for choice and a second opinion as well when one is unsatisfied with the treatment...like with medicine. The health and well-being of our children is the most basic concern of a parent. Unfortunately we cannot inoculate our children against illiteracy. And that is why I speak.
My grandchildren deserve schools that work. I also "care" about children. I was motivated to go into education because of the super teachers I had at Dothan High School where I was a cheerleader. I want to cheer for our schools! But, I was appalled at the illiteracy I saw in students I taught when I became a teacher. I watched my own little brother struggle (12 years younger and the recipient of a different philosophy of education that came in during the late 60s)...and I could do nothing to help. That is why I started studying what was going wrong with education...and why I was so inadequately prepared to deal with it...with two degrees! I stumbled upon a school that really works in a private school my children attended with the ABEKA curriculum. Even my hyperactive son learned to read and write with excellence. I can assure you his critical thinking did not suffer from Mastery of basic skills
Do I care about children? Enough to stand up for what I believe in, Honey. And I will tell you it costs.
Children are my inspiration. Eager bright-eyed children with open faces can be changed to hunched shoulders sagging in discouragement and dulled, saddened, confused eyes. Hurt feelings don't really matter in the scheme of things...mine or yours. We truly have the same goal..
And their teachers have proven how talented and capable they are with the high GPAs that finally reflect the intelligence their SAT scores failed to pick up on. With confidence like this they are equipped to make the educational decisions that determine your child's future. Right?
Believe them when they tell you they simply did not test well. And now they are deservedly a PH.D. teaching teachers how to teach. Makes sense to me. That and the track record of those Colleges of Education.

Do you realize that in 2013 only 39 percent of 12th graders, 30 percent of 8th graders and 39 percent of 4th graders read at a Proficient level?
That means 60 Percent were NOT at a Proficient level. Is that good enough for you?
What does that mean for the workforce for the State of Florida? Or more importantly the future of those children?

ONLY 37 percent of U.S. children are proficient in reading at the 12th grade. That bodes well for their future, doesn't it? You could tell they were in for trouble with only 36 percent being proficient in the fourth grade.
But let's have a Hootenanny and proclaim, "Yes We Can!"
And you continue to trust those who brought your children to this point to tell you how to fix it.
But, I challenge you to truly KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SUPPORTING. BECAUSE IN BAY DISTRICT SCHOOLS IT IS FULL BLOWN COMMON CORE.

WHO'S LEARNING DISABLED? and THE GREAT EXPECTATIONS INITIATIVE

WHO'S LEARNING DISABLED? Perhaps it is really TEACHING DISABLED? Read Dr. Baughman's article and then read on to the segment I posted on the Great Expectations Initiative based on Marva Collins' methods.


Though they can't coin acronyms fast enough, the most popular at the moment is ADD Attention Deficit Disorder or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It is said to affect 33 percent of boys and 15 percent of girls. Who will be left? Pull a pigtail, out of your seat, out of line, thrilled you know the answer and blurt it out: the taggers will get you and it will be out to a doctor not able to confirm the diagnosis. The "disorder is fixed and kept fixed in school by obtaining a prescription for that special addictive medication to calm and quiet the child. ADD researcher McGuiness concluded "Two decades of research have not provided any support for the validity of ADD or ADHD." F. Levy rejoined, "the issue of prescribing powerful behavior controlling medications to children for conditions defined by parents and teachers, remains controversial." In testimony concerning the National Institutes of Mental Health Research Portfolio, I questioned the ethics of studies featuring biological interventions for behavioral disturbances without a proven biological basis.
Other disorders include "Conduct Disorder" (SED) and to go with Dyslexia or "Specific Reading Disability" is "Dyscalculia," a special arithmetic disorder. There is also "Executive Disorder."
Not a single one of these so-called disorders is a brain disease that can be validated. Teachers have become mere deputy diagnosticians.

Teachers reported they were forbidden to use Phonics.
I cannot help but wonder how they have managed to dilute Phonics still. Making teachers think they are being "creative" when they use rhymes, etc to teach reading rather than DIRECT INSTRUCTION.


The picture close-up is indeed alarming; to see children thwarted by the adults entrusted to educate them, to see children half-way through school and graduating still illiterate brings tears to my eyes. To see them blamed and then victimized by for profit pseudoscience makes me angry. Tragically today, to be pro-public education, pro-child, are two different things entirely. The dinosaur that is nepotistic public education has proven itself decade after decade to be incapable of change. Our children need an alternative and they need it now! We must enact choice and must make it work.
Did you ever hear about Marva Collins and her Great Expectations Initiative? I have the rest of this study if anyone is interested. It takes leadership just as John Winston delivered at Parks Elementary in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Dear Mr. Ramsey,
I was very interested to talk to you last week about an article which I published in 1990 in Volume 27, #3 of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching entitled "Science Achievement in Semestered and All-Year Courses." From what you have told me, some of the education officials in your area have received misinformation about that article and about how I presently stand with regard to the research and conclusions as stated in that article.
Let me state most strongly that I stand firmly behind the conclusions reported in that study.
Students in semestered courses in secondary science in British Columbia do not score as well on reliable and valid, standardized science instruments measuring academic performance derived from course objectives.
Any reports that I may have retracted any of what I wrote in that article are totally false, and I would appreciate your nipping in the bud any such references.
The research described above included a very large number of students (over 28,000!!) and the results left absolutely no doubt based on probability of error (one has to go out to the 10th decimal place to find anything but 0's in the probabilities!!) While there may be many advantages to semestered timetables and course structures, and while I personally might want to teach in a semestered system, the academic performance of students appears to suffer. Every other piece of research on this subject that I am aware of is based on testimonials, and not on actual student performance data. Based upon what I found during that study, and from examining the data of subsequent assessments, I cannot academically support a semestered timetable.

It was November, 1993. The local paper reported that our school system was considering a restructuring of our schools to shift from six periods that last all year to four periods each semester which would cover coursework for the entire year. Supposedly, our new Republican governor had given the schools such demanding requirements that it would take a child eight courses a year to fulfill those requirements. Another sales pitch was that the four period day would take less time in the halls where violence often occurred . (The schools have always taken care that the public was pretty much in the dark about violence in the schools because of effective PR. The former "education reporter" for our paper is now the PR person for the city schools, merely a change of location. The PR did not eliminate the flight from public schools however, the enrollment has fallen from over 10,000 students to 9300 regardless of our (reputed) growth in city population.)
The DOTHAN EAGLE reported that our Director of Secondary Instruction, Susan Lockwood, had gone to Frederick, Maryland, to observe a high school which was using the four period day. The principals of the high schools had flown with her. That Frederick principal was coming to Dothan to address the parents about the four period day. I had just fought a statewide battle against Goals 2000. Our former governor, Jim Folsom, had promoted the Alabama First Plan, which was the Kentucky Education Reform Act, restyled by David Hornbeck, the author of the Kentucky reform, for Alabama. (Hornbeck is a member of Carnegie Foundation boards with Marc Tucker and Hillary Clinton. The Carnegie Foundation is pushing the New American Schools Development Corporation which has endorsed models for new schools--all Outcomes Based. Marc Tucker, author of Oregon's Education Reform, has an organization which produces the tests for Performance Based Education (OBE/Mastery Learning). Kentucky spent $1 million developing a criterion referenced test directed at what teachers were teaching, not necessarily those skills parents thought they were sending children to learn.) The extended period seemed to me to fit into the requirements for longer time in a classroom for the teach-test, re-teach-retest cycle needed incorporating the Peer Tutoring and Group Learning necessary for the attitude and behavioral goals of Goals 2000.
My husband, an attorney, humored me and called Daniel Cunningham, principal of Frederick High School, the school in Maryland we were to emulate. He asked where the "mother of all four period days" was. Cunningham admitted they were in their first year of using the method. They'd gotten it from a school across town. Dr. Thomas Guskey had advised their system. (A computer search at our education library revealed that Guskey is an expert on Mastery Learning/ Outcomes Based Education.) Apparently he had not read the research he cited to my husband when pressed for empirical data. We called Dr. David Bateson, author of the study, who was then on vacation on an island off the coast of British Columbia. He sent us his study. His conclusions? "The four period day is detrimental to academic achievement."
My husband called Cunningham back and told him what Bateson's study said. Cunningham had said he had notes of a conversation a colleague had with Bateson where Bateson had repudiated his study. My husband's brother does studies like that himself and knowing him we knew a professor would rather repudiate his first born son. We called Bateson back. Bateson faxed us a repudiation..of Cunningham's ridiculous claim!!!! His study had been over 28,000 students. He is a winner of a prestigious award for the scientific methodology used in his studies. All of this was taken to the administration, board, and principals. However, at the meeting, with their manipulation (the Delphi Technique), those facts were not presented, the parents took the PR packet as the gospel when it claimed that "research shows no change in student performance on standardized tests." The four period day was implemented.

About six weeks after we implemented the four period day, a video was made which promotes block scheduling. Glossy brochures were sent around the area with offers to do workshops and bring experts in block scheduling to share their methodology. The video was sold for $40. One wonders how much more current methodology has been sold with this type of "research" to support it.
In 1995, Susan Lockwood, the administrator who convinced us to use the program and who tallied the votes on whether or not to implement the program, used Dothan AP Geometry and Algebra and students for her doctoral dissertation from the University of Alabama, a fact I only just discovered on THE PROBLEM WITH BLOCK SCHEDULING web site. I found it interesting that the research that went unrecognized in the PR presentations delivered to the parents (research which my husband and I provided to the administrators) was mentioned the summary of her dissertation published in the NASSP journal in December of 1995. (In the same publication another administrator was tooting his own horn over our school-to-work initiatives). Using the 1994 scores on a standardized test and comparing them to the scores after block scheduling, Lockwood saw scores drop six points for minority students from 42 to 36, white student's scores dropped 2 points. Although Lockwood drew the conclusion that this was not statistically significant thereby enabling her to recommend block scheduling, apparently it was significant enough to indicate that for AP students more, rather than less, was better.
In Dothan, AP classes operate for two semesters giving that one course two credits. Lockwood's study of about 400 students was apparently more scientific than the award winning study of over 28,000 students done by Dr. Bateson. She challenges his conclusions with her ringing endorsement of block scheduling. Compare the claims in this packet with the research on the PROBLEM WITH BLOCK SCHEDULING Web site. One parent sent me a copy of the packet they were given at her school, only the credit for the research was under their own director of instruction's name. Again, the question "where is the mother of all four period days"? Who has pre-packaged this program?
One must consider that AP students are the most motivated and capable. What are the results on students who are not as motivated and capable? Perhaps the recent graduation results will give an indication. In 1994 at Dothan High School 232 students graduated. There were 361 students who entered Dothan High School as ninth graders. That is an attrition rate of 35%. The four period day went into effect in the fall of 1995. By 1997 there were 210 students who graduated out of the 404 who entered as ninth graders. That is a 48% attrition rate. 35% to 48% attrition ought to make those thinking of adopting the four period day stop and think. At Northview the attrition rate went from 28% in 1994 (425 entered as 9th graders and 302 graduated) to 36% (411 entered as 9th graders and 263 graduated) in 1997. The dog and pony show is still on the road. I wonder if these statistics are a part of the presentation.
It is interesting to me that those determined to defend public education at all costs continue to protest that these high numbers reflect students who have moved or gone to private school. Didn't students move before block scheduling? Is the the increase in the number of students not graduating on time because of difficulty in acquiring the required number of credits because of the four period day? (Remember band, football, and cheerleading take up one fourth of a student's academic year with block scheduling.)
Many questions should be asked. With Career Quest/Tech Prep being required, and Band, Football, and Cheerleading lasting both semesters, how does a student fit in the required courses? Could the lower graduation rate have something to do with students having to make up courses over the summer? Why has the Alternative School been seeing more students if this was to address discipline problems? With students doing their homework in class has content been so diminished that students are having trouble in follow up classes? With interference and lack of reinforcement has retention been affected? Some claim the increased attrition has to do with transfers. Why are they transferring? Didn't transferring happen in 1994? Does no one move into Dothan any more? If more are dropping out and getting GEDs shouldn't we ask why? Who taught the classes when teachers were on the road promoting the four period day? Could having substitute teachers account for the increase in attrition?
In addition to these questions regarding the effectiveness of this curriculum, society has a bigger question to ask. When a school system hires an administrator should that administrator use their position to influence the adoption of an experimental, highly controversial methodology, use PR packets to promote its adoption with information that is erroneous, count the votes, and then use the personal records of those students as statistics for a doctoral dissertation? Aren't our administrators responsible for researching for themselves the validity of a program and providing those who pay their salaries with the best KNOWN METHODS FOR ENHANCING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT?Don't they at least owe parents who care enough to do the legwork and research for them some respect? The FDA regulates human drug experiments. Who regulates educators who mess with our children's minds?
Why was implementing block scheduling so critical?

Mr. Husfelt shared your blog with me and we definitely have a passion for students in common!
I did want to clear up a couple of misconceptions though. This event was my idea but it was quickly adopted by the Bay High students who actually have their own program called Streetlights that works with homeless teens. The students make all of the arrangements, secure the private sponsors, design the t-shirts and coordinate the day’s events. They are working on a partnership with downtown businesses to promote “dining in downtown” after the event next year and hope to continue to refine their marketing skills to increase visibility for their cause.
Bay District shared their event, as we have others, in our district-wide communications to support the hard work of the students. These same students spearheaded Unity Day (#UnityBay) and Dads Take Your Child To School Day and if you’ll look back you’ll see we shared those events as well to support them and increase visibility.
The kids work hard for the cause because they literally have friends who are homeless. And their work generates results! Just this morning the lady who coordinates our district efforts for the homeless let them know that she has been overwhelmed with the donations she’s received from this event this year.
I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy the event or were surprised that it wasn’t what you expected. We are inundated each year with positive feedback from people who attended but I completely understand that every event is not for everyone.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas and I hope we run into each other at some future event so we can be properly introduced.

As you say, this was your idea, Ms. Michalik. You are the Human Resources Director, the one who hires teachers who teach our children. Are there not laws that prohibit using children for political purposes taking them out of their regular classes to promote a political agenda. You acknowledge that it was you who selected the vehicle for this event that had no business being associated with our education system because it is totally lacking in quality and has only political connotations. Can just any employee access any Bay District School facility for any purpose without oversight by the Superintendent and the Board?
Had you read the lyrics, Mr. Husfelt? Did you know the origin of the SNL Cohen's Hallelujah is associated with Democrat politics and with SNL Cold Open with Kate McKinnon after the election?
You say, the children took over? They are students because they need direction. You invited the public who had no bias to attend an event that represents what you stand for. Whether you intended it or not that is exactly what this is. This is perhaps one of the most blatant examples of the perversion of our school system as vehicles for a Social Justice agenda I have ever seen.
May I point out that they are the students; you are the adults. Even more so, when the rubber hits the road, you are responsible for making sure those children are not just safe (why are they roaming about downtown?) but well-educated. Can they write articulately, spell their words correctly, add, multiply, divide.
My husband is a retired attorney. I am sure he would tell you that the legal consequences of those children being injured or molested while on one of those downtown jaunts, could be expensive.
Christmas is the most sacred time of the year and Handel's Messiah would have at least given credence to Bay District Schools having some standards as well as a big heart. Handel's Messiah would pass the muster of cultural literacy and at the same time elevate the image of Bay District Schools. I thought perhaps a school orchestra/band would play the Handel's Messiah and you would hand out the words/music to folks who came. It would draw choirs and individuals, I imagine, all with the purpose of singing and donating to a worthy project.. We would assume whatever part we sing (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and then go to our respective sections and attempt our very best effort at that music. One woman told me she had practiced in the car with her music for an entire week before coming to this event. You could elevate spirits and musical literacy at the same time. Think of the lessons on Handel and church music that could accompany this.
Handel's Messiah would have been something to be proud of. And would have encouraged the community to see the benefit of music in our schools.
I am not reassured by the lack of oversight by the Board as to what goes out to the public as an example of a product for the Bay District Schools.
Many of these children will wind up homeless if they do not get the education they need to be getting. Using them as models of community involvement robs them of their own education. Take your Dads to School Day? You call this Marketing? Unity Day? You are making little Democrat community organizers out of these children - not students qualified for employment anywhere!
I am afraid these children would be humiliated if Jay Leno ever encountered them on the street and asked them a real question about History or anything else!
Our school children are a charity unto themselves. We invest in schools not to produce social warriors, but educated citizens!
The buck stops with you, Mr. Husfelt. Do you endorse politicizing children and calling it educating them? Do they not deserve a real education?

Mr. Husfelt shared your blog with me and we definitely have a passion for students in common!
I did want to clear up a couple of misconceptions though. This event was my idea but it was quickly adopted by the Bay High students who actually have their own program called Streetlights that works with homeless teens. The students make all of the arrangements, secure the private sponsors, design the t-shirts and coordinate the day’s events. They are working on a partnership with downtown businesses to promote “dining in downtown” after the event next year and hope to continue to refine their marketing skills to increase visibility for their cause.
Bay District shared their event, as we have others, in our district-wide communications to support the hard work of the students. These same students spearheaded Unity Day (#UnityBay) and Dads Take Your Child To School Day and if you’ll look back you’ll see we shared those events as well to support them and increase visibility.
The kids work hard for the cause because they literally have friends who are homeless. And their work generates results! Just this morning the lady who coordinates our district efforts for the homeless let them know that she has been overwhelmed with the donations she’s received from this event this year.
I’m sorry that you didn’t enjoy the event or were surprised that it wasn’t what you expected. We are inundated each year with positive feedback from people who attended but I completely understand that every event is not for everyone.
I wish you a very Merry Christmas and I hope we run into each other at some future event so we can be properly introduced.

As you say, this was your idea, Ms. Michalik. You are the Human Resources Director, the one who hires teachers who teach our children. Are there not laws that prohibit using children for political purposes taking them out of their regular classes to promote a political agenda. You acknowledge that it was you who selected the vehicle for this event that had no business being associated with our education system because it is totally lacking in quality and has only political connotations. Can just any employee access any Bay District School facility for any purpose without oversight by the Superintendent and the Board?
Had you read the lyrics, Mr. Husfelt? Did you know the origin of the SNL Cohen's Hallelujah is associated with Democrat politics and with SNL Cold Open with Kate McKinnon after the election?
You say, the children took over? They are students because they need direction. You invited the public who had no bias to attend an event that represents what you stand for. Whether you intended it or not that is exactly what this is. This is perhaps one of the most blatant examples of the perversion of our school system as vehicles for a Social Justice agenda I have ever seen.
May I point out that they are the students; you are the adults. Even more so, when the rubber hits the road, you are responsible for making sure those children are not just safe (why are they roaming about downtown?) but well-educated. Can they write articulately, spell their words correctly, add, multiply, divide.
My husband is a retired attorney. I am sure he would tell you that the legal consequences of those children being injured or molested while on one of those downtown jaunts, could be expensive.
Christmas is the most sacred time of the year and Handel's Messiah would have at least given credence to Bay District Schools having some standards as well as a big heart. Handel's Messiah would pass the muster of cultural literacy and at the same time elevate the image of Bay District Schools. I thought perhaps a school orchestra/band would play the Handel's Messiah and you would hand out the words/music to folks who came. It would draw choirs and individuals, I imagine, all with the purpose of singing and donating to a worthy project.. We would assume whatever part we sing (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and then go to our respective sections and attempt our very best effort at that music. One woman told me she had practiced in the car with her music for an entire week before coming to this event. You could elevate spirits and musical literacy at the same time. Think of the lessons on Handel and church music that could accompany this.
Handel's Messiah would have been something to be proud of. And would have encouraged the community to see the benefit of music in our schools.
I am not reassured by the lack of oversight by the Board as to what goes out to the public as an example of a product for the Bay District Schools.
Many of these children will wind up homeless if they do not get the education they need to be getting. Using them as models of community involvement robs them of their own education. Take your Dads to School Day? You call this Marketing? Unity Day? You are making little Democrat community organizers out of these children - not students qualified for employment anywhere!
I am afraid these children would be humiliated if Jay Leno ever encountered them on the street and asked them a real question about History or anything else!
Our school children are a charity unto themselves. We invest in schools not to produce social warriors, but educated citizens!
The buck stops with you, Mr. Husfelt. Do you endorse politicizing children and calling it educating them? Do they not deserve a real education?

A Tale of the Last Hope for Local Control of Education

Candidates for the position for Chairman of the School Board included a doctor, the Establishment candidate, a good friend of the political power in the town and two conservatives. Of course, Sharman Ramsey was labeled a trouble maker from the beginning. She obviously hated public education (though she had graduated from Dothan High School having attended public schools throughout her education) and had an agenda, having made proposals to bring the archaic Phonics Method back to the schools. And she had gathered a group to run on a BACK TO BASICS agenda because not doing so would have made all efforts futile since the resistance would have been unsurmountable with everyone else on the board determined to "be supportive."
The word (because a disinformation process got started at the Central Office) was they hated public education and wanted to deny the system the money they wanted for all the Progressive "innovations" the administrators had up their sleeves. Things like Whole Language, The Four Period Day, Conflict Resolution! All those wonderfully innovative things the College of Education over at FSU were promoting through Goals 2000. Things supported whole heartedly by the Chamber of Commerce because many of their members wives were members of the Alabama Education Association that supported anything that brought job security and more benefits and they were graduates of Dr. Patti Fritchie's and Dr. Mary Jo Pollman's reading instruction and therefore soldiers for the Progressive/Whole Language agenda. (Dr. Pollman walked the TSUD halls with the Whole Language Catalog tucked under her arm like a talisman.)

That Back To Basics group (the Flat Earthers as they were called) set out their agenda to take the school system back to the dark ages. And PHONICS WAS THEIR CENTRAL ISSUE. Of course the accusations were that Ramsey was out to profit front her efforts. They channeled their own greed, because Ramsey's efforts were truly altruistic. Ramsey even refused to take donations when running for office because she did not want to owe anything to anyone. (That was REALLY stupid. No one would do something like that!)

While no one had heard any education related comments from the doctor running for Superintendent other than he had a "heart" for education and would listen to the experts, he had the administration working hard, handing out goodies at the football games with the financial backing of the mayor of the city and another doctor, tight with Governor Siegelman and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
We know how into education the Southern Poverty Law Center is. Why they even published the Teaching Tolerance Curriculum with all of its New Age techniques to empower students -- to read better? Or perhaps turn classrooms into therapeutic labs for attitude adjustment and opening one to the power of the occult. They would make money off the program. No research done on the program could be produced. (Who else besides those silly people who requested access to the curriculum would even care and if you stonewall long enough you could make them look foolish, mock them, isolate them. Alinsky methods.)

Racism pervaded Ramsey's comments "What is the common denominator here? Eighty-five percent of the juveniles before the courts are functionally illiterate. Eighty five percent of prisoners in jail are functionally illiterate. Fifty percent of 17 year old black males are functionally illiterate.
Why pointing out that the current system of reading instruction was failing those most vulnerable made her a violent racist! Of course! That's logical.

And she dared point out that some of the lowest scores across the state of Alabama were in the towns with universities and colleges of education. Could it be that using those students as guinea pigs for their "innovations" could have helped create the situation, dared the graduate of two colleges of education within the state, the University of Alabama and Troy University Dothan?
So what did they propose? Citing the appalling statistics that "over 30 percent of 9th graders drop out of school before the 12th grade they dared to make some suggestions.
1. A CITIZEN REVIEW COMMITTEE
Parents and citizens should review all books, movies computer software and group administered tests other than teacher administered tests.
2. A RETURN TO CLASSES IN HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY AND THE ELIMINATION OF MULTICULTURALISM
3. LIMIT FIELD TRIPS
Reducing the costs to the students and adding more time for instruction
4. ADMINISTER NATIONALLY NORMED STANDARDIZED TESTS (LIKE THE SAT) with the results broken down by school and by class in order to insure educated parental choice for schools and teachers by parents and assure teacher accountability
5. PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS TO MAN AND RUN FUNDRAISERS FOR THE SCHOOL
Preferably of a kind that develops a sense of community and family
6. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SHOULD OFFER A SYSTEMATIC INTENSIVE DIRECT AND EARLY PHONICS PROGRAM option for ALL CHILDREN
7. STRUCTURED TRADITIONAL CLASSROOMS
8. CONTENT BASED CURRICULUM
9. DRILL AND REPETITION to reinforce learning and develop memory skills
10. CONTENT BASED CURRICULUM
10. SEMESTER EXAMS
11. DIRECT INSTRUCTION
12. 9 WEEK TESTS IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS
13. FOREIGN LANGUAGE
14. TYPING
15. LATIN OPTION
16. SEVEN PERIOD DAY (NO BLOCK SCHEDULING)
17. A PUBLISHED SCHOOL BOARD AGENDA
18. PARENTAL SCHOOL BOARDS FOR INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS, which along with the principal, determine dress code and discipline code for individual schools.

Their plan was supported by the research provided by Dr. Patrick Groff. Please notice Number 24 below. This was the 90s.
Whole Language has a political agenda; to aid in the radical change, to the Left, of the political structure of our nation.

Dr. Groff was quite astute. Prescient. Observant.
Those who won this election and those afterward became mere pawns. Endorsing item after item, a checklist of radical policies that began with paying someone to rewrite the bylaws of the Board shifting from requiring SEQUENTIAL learning to THEMATIC. This got passed without the public having an inkling of the earthquake in education the Goals 2000 written for us by David Hornbeck of the National Center for Education and the Economy and author of Human Capital would bring.
From then on signs popped up Support Our Schools year after year with fundraisers to enhance the education of our children. But that only meant buying fax machines, or microwaves, or encouraging Earth Day Activities. Parents leave education to the educators. And that means those in control of the schools and their clones. Not ever those who might challenge ANYTHING!
But those folks that lost the election hadn't given up affecting a real difference in the lives of Dothan students. They actually proposed a Right to Read Act. I can only imagine the hilarity at the Central Office.


Foolish people. What matter they had research on their side. Why they even were so brazen as to suppose others shared their sincere concern about the high rates of illiteracy and the low scores of Reading and Math.
But the doctor's wife who was so tight with Siegelman, actually turned her back on the foolish woman who dared to bring her the research that could make a REAL DIFFERENCE in enabling those minorities they claimed to champion to be able to read. Her act of arrogance and disrespect has never been forgotten. Nor the time that Seigelman's wife did pretty much the same thing. With people who have power there is no humility, I have found. Money goes to some folks head.
Then that silly woman actually wrote an article that was published in the Montgomery Advertiser pointing out that the State Director of Instruction, Dr. Katherine Mitchell, had written her dissertation on Whole Language (as she proudly proclaimed at an Education meeting at the Capitol. Chip Bailey was in office then and sat on the Education Committee.)
That caused that poor woman's heart to clench up almost as much as Dean Kunkel's admission at the Delphi technique meeting the Chamber of Commerce held where he admitted there was no research to support it, just "current wisdom."
But that is what happens when you step out against the powerful Establishment. The Swamp creatures are everywhere!


And you would think that would be it. That woman's children grew up. They scored high on the tests because she had gotten her own children to high ground to go back and fight for the rest. The ABEKA curriculum was successful for them.
She and her friends did not give up fighting for the children. She and others paid to bring educators from schools with methods that worked, like John Winston...

When her children graduated, though she find herself crying in her garden over the failure of the schools and the lost children in it, she did not realize how bad it had really gotten until her granddaughter had problems with Common Core Math. And once again that old warhorse got called to battle.
Of course, I am that old nag. Not as strong as before. Not as mobile. (A chair lift in our home is a blessing. But every bit as concerned now as I was thirty years ago because Dr. Groff's concerns have proven valid. And now it is legislatively entrenched within our schools. Our children AND our nation are at risk!)
Unless there is revolution with parents DEMANDING a REAL EDUCATION for their children and freedom from this oppressive education system I think we are headed for a Brave New World in truth and not fiction.
Let us pray for OUR CHAMPION. Because he is truly up against a determined and powerful enemy.

DEMONIC ROOTS TO COMMON CORE? VISIT YOUR CHILD'S THERAPEUTIC CLASSROOM.
Roll your eyes. Delete the post. Hide it from your feed. Demonic roots? This lady has flipped out now. Some of you are rubbing your hands with joy telling yourself, this proves it! She has totally discredited herself now! Go back to your church and share the joke. Pat yourself on the back for being such an enlightened Christian, well-armed to pick and choose among the myriad of belief systems. And trusting of your education system not to go beyond their secular responsibility to empower your child with the new mantra -- critical thinking.

It was December, 1996. when a group of Dothan Parents submitted a request to view the Conflict Resolution Curriculum announced by the Dothan City School System. Another effort in futility. The School system, of course, considered us mere lint on their collars, easily flicked off.
But, they had to go through the process of acknowledging us and did allow us to see the curriculum.

We were black parents and white parents and we did not think psychotherapeutic techniques in our classrooms were appropriate. Had our teachers been certified in psychotherapy? Did they understand that they could have impact on individual children beyond their understanding?
Notice, once again, we parents requested information where the program had been used and the long term studies performed to determine its effectiveness. "As this is acknowledged to be a program intended to change attitudes and behaviors, we also requested the name of professional psychologists who have approved these materials for group psychotherapeutic use.
You gave them that right? I don't remember doing that.
These terms have become more and more frequent in the education lexicon. According to Jack Canfield, Founder and Past Director of he Institute of Wholistic Education and Past President of the Association for Humanistic Education, A NEW AGE GURU, "It is equally vital that we help children develop an integrated personality. Most children need to increase their awareness of their emotional and mental process, and to learn how to express that awareness. They also need to learn the skills of listening, Problem solving, and conflict resolution which help New Age classrooms foster emotionally healthy children."

Children often question whether emotions are a legitimate topic for discussion in school. They tend to show discomfort at the mention of emotional issues. There is no doubt that affective education can be conducted inappropriately, on the other hand, it's naive to think that you can teach anything without dealing with the emotional aspect. For these somewhat conflicting reasons, I advocate a straightforward approach to emotions in the classroom.
DIVIDE STUDENTS INTO GROUPS. IDENTITY POLITICS. Divide students into groups. Some groups are low income, some middle income, and some rich. Have the groups write down the ways they might discriminate against the greenies...You don't think they are planting biases in the minds of these children, do you?
KEEP ON READING. BUT, I HAVE NO FAITH THAT IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH YOU. JUST GO SIT IN YOUR SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS SUNDAY MORNING AND PROFESS YOUR FAITH AND BELIEF AND THEN CLOSE YOUR EYES TO WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THE SCHOOL WHERE YOUR CHILD/GRANDCHILD. ATTENDS. GO SERVE A FEW MEALS AND PAT YOURSELF ON THE BACK THAT YOUR DISINTEREST HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT THOSE PEOPLE ARE HOMELESS AND HOPELESS IN THE FIRST PLACE. AND SURELY IT WILL NEVER AFFECT YOUR FAMILY. YOUR CHILDREN.
SHOULD YOU RESPOND SOMEONE MIGHT ACTUALLY ACCUSE YOU OF HAVING AN AGENDA. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MIGHT DO TO YOUR SOCIAL LIFE.
But then again, you might die in your sleep tonight and have God ask you why you were missing in action.

You gave them that right? I don't remember doing that.


These terms have become more and more frequent in the education lexicon. Most children need to increase their awareness of their emotional and mental process, and to learn how to express that awareness. They also need to learn the skills of listening, Problem solving, and conflict resolution which help New Age classrooms foster emotionally healthy children."

Children often question whether emotions are a legitimate topic for discussion in school. They tend to show discomfort at the mention of emotional issues. There is no doubt that affective education can be conducted inappropriately, on the other hand, it's naive to think that you can teach anything without dealing with the emotional aspect. For these somewhat conflicting reasons, I advocate a straightforward approach to emotions in the classroom.

DIVIDE STUDENTS INTO GROUPS. IDENTITY POLITICS. Divide students into groups. Some groups are low income, some middle income, and some rich. Have the groups write down the ways they might discriminate against the greenies...You don't think they are planting biases in the minds of these children, do you?

SHOULD YOU RESPOND SOMEONE MIGHT ACTUALLY ACCUSE YOU OF HAVING AN AGENDA. AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MIGHT DO TO YOUR SOCIAL LIFE.
But then again, you might die in your sleep tonight and have God ask you why you were missing in action.

It was December, 1996. when a group of Dothan Parents submitted a request to view the Conflict Resolution Curriculum announced by the Dothan City School System. Another effort in futility. The School system, of course, considered us mere lint on their collars, easily flicked off.
But, they had to go through the process of acknowledging us and did allow us to see the curriculum.

It was December, 1996. when a group of Dothan Parents submitted a request to view the Conflict Resolution Curriculum announced by the Dothan City School System. Another effort in futility. The School system, of course, considered us mere lint on their collars, easily flicked off.
But, they had to go through the process of acknowledging us and did allow us to see the curriculum.



We were black parents and white parents and we did not think psychotherapeutic techniques in our classrooms were appropriate. Had our teachers been certified in psychotherapy? Did they understand that they could have impact on individual children beyond their understanding?

Notice, once again, we parents requested information where the program had been used and the long term studies performed to determine its effectiveness. "As this is acknowledged to be a program intended to change attitudes and behaviors, we also requested the name of professional psychologists who have approved these materials for group psychotherapeutic use.

It was December, 1996. when a group of Dothan Parents submitted a request to view the Conflict Resolution Curriculum announced by the Dothan City School System. Another effort in futility. The School system, of course, considered us mere lint on their collars, easily flicked off.
But, they had to go through the process of acknowledging us and did allow us to see the curriculum.



We were black parents and white parents and we did not think psychotherapeutic techniques in our classrooms were appropriate. Had our teachers been certified in psychotherapy? Did they understand that they could have impact on individual children beyond their understanding?

Notice, once again, we parents requested information where the program had been used and the long term studies performed to determine its effectiveness. "As this is acknowledged to be a program intended to change attitudes and behaviors, we also requested the name of professional psychologists who have approved these materials for group psychotherapeutic use.

So now, Robert Muller's influence, his guides, control the curriculum that has become the national curriculum of the United States.


CRITICAL THINKING. PAYING ATTENTION?
Like "critical thinking," so, too, do "problem solving," "applying knowledge," and "making decisions and judgements" fall into the realm of values. From the additional requirements, such as "global perspectives, and "interpersonal and interpersonal skills," we find that the values of the children will be shaped not by their parents, but by themselves as they learn to learn. (In truth, however, determinations of their values will be guided by their "facilitators.") The disciplines for defining the new education is likewise very subjective and intuitive:

SPALDING WRITING ROAD TO READING PROPOSAL
I know it is hard for people to understand, but there are those among us who really want excellent academic opportunities for our children. Not just our children. But all children. And we are willing to step out and advocate for what WE KNOW WORKS! For a true academic education that opens doors and opportunities.
And so, in Dothan, years ago, my husband and I got involved with a group of like-minded, dedicated people and really tried.
Motivated by the students in my Henry County, Alabama classrooms who could not read their textbooks, I set out to find out why?
I tried to share what I saw with the elementary teachers. After talking about the large number of my seventh and eighth grade students' inability to sound out words, the principal walked in, after having missed hearing anything else I said, and announced, "If we were to tell them not to say ain't out on the playground they would laugh us off the field."
When I could finally pick my jaw up off the ground at the inanity of his comment, I realized how hopeless my efforts were. Well, first of all, that is grammar. It had nothing to do with their inability to read. Secondly, we ARE teachers. That is what we get paid for. Obviously, my concerns were being dismissed. As I was at the end of the year, supposedly due to proration.But, then who could stay in a place where when you tell the administrators that children cannot read; the Assistant Superintendent tells you "Well, just read the test to him."
That was the same stupidity that reigned when I went to the Director of Instruction at Dothan City Schools to tell him that the Computer Assisted Instruction program the IBM Writing to Read Program was ineffective and showed him the research. He told me they had too much invested to change now. (I wonder if he got any kickbacks on putting all those computers in the schools. (forgive my cynicism). I saw too much of what else happened in those schools to doubt anything.
The authentic program Spalding Writing Road to Reading is cheap and effective. The pretender, The IBM Writing to Read Program, is a dud according to Dr. Robert Slavin.
But, back to our proposal. I had read a publication by the Republican Platform Committee that reported on Charter Schools in Arizona that used the Spalding Writing Road to Reading to great effect with children learning to read the first time, English as a second language and for remedial reading. Somehow we were directed to John Winston, principal of Parks Elementary Natchitoches Parish School Board
In one year, Mr. Winston had brought his first grade students from three housing projects up from the 25th to the 80th percentile of reading. From 40 identified dyslexics the number fell to about 2 or 3. And because the students were successful, discipline problems also disappeared. Pretty good record, we thought.
We paid for Mr. Winston to come and speak to our administrators and school board. But the powers that be at Troy University Dothan sent out the call and those students under professor Dr. Patty Fritche showed up in full battle gear to defend their Progressive Agenda -- the Whole Language Method that Dean Kunkel of Auburn told me was "current wisdom" when I asked for research to support it.
They won. The children lost. And now we have the most academically bankrupt, morally depraved curriculum of all -- COMMON CORE.
The rudeness of that school board to those we invited to address them on this method was appalling!
Again I heard that my husband and I were out to profit from this. (NOT!) Indeed, we invested in bringing this gentleman to our town to bring a better curriculum there for ALL children! And look how cheap it is!
JOHN WINSTON, Natchitoches, Louisiana, PARKS ELEMENTARY, INVITED TO VISIT AND SHARE THIS EFFECTIVE PROGRAM
I cannot help but wonder how many of our students would have had better jobs and opportunities, stayed out of crime, had these narrow-minded, self-centered, self-righteous soldiers of Progressive Education opened their eyes to something that REALLY WORKED TO EDUCATE CHILDREN!
I hope that fine man is doing well. He made a difference in many lives. I only wish Dothan and Henry county could have benefitted.
Of course, if you buck the system and really try to make a difference with effective academic curriculum, you will be:OstracizedFiredLabeled disgruntled ex-teacherKu Klux Klan (that's a hard one to understand since those that would benefit most would be the same minority group that John Winston helped!Condemned as not being a "team player"Accused of profitingOr you can just chalk it up to doing what the good Lord put you here for. He did not put us here to take up space, go along to get along, or you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. He put us here for some purpose. And if making a difference in a child's life isn't one, I don't know what is.
Join the Eagle Forum and we can combine forces. It will take a lot to get COMMON CORE out of our schools. But our children are too important to give up on.

That was the same stupidity that reigned when I went to the Director of Instruction at Dothan City Schools to tell him that the Computer Assisted Instruction program the IBM Writing to Read Program was ineffective and showed him the research. He told me they had too much invested to change now. (I wonder if he got any kickbacks on putting all those computers in the schools. (forgive my cynicism). I saw too much of what else happened in those schools to doubt anything.
The authentic program Spalding Writing Road to Reading is cheap and effective. The pretender, The IBM Writing to Read Program, is a dud according to Dr. Robert Slavin.
But, back to our proposal. I had read a publication by the Republican Platform Committee that reported on Charter Schools in Arizona that used the Spalding Writing Road to Reading to great effect with children learning to read the first time, English as a second language and for remedial reading. Somehow we were directed to John Winston, principal of Parks Elementary Natchitoches Parish School Board
In one year, Mr. Winston had brought his first grade students from three housing projects up from the 25th to the 80th percentile of reading. From 40 identified dyslexics the number fell to about 2 or 3. And because the students were successful, discipline problems also disappeared. Pretty good record, we thought.
We paid for Mr. Winston to come and speak to our administrators and school board. But the powers that be at Troy University Dothan sent out the call and those students under professor Dr. Patty Fritche showed up in full battle gear to defend their Progressive Agenda -- the Whole Language Method that Dean Kunkel of Auburn told me was "current wisdom" when I asked for research to support it.
They won. The children lost. And now we have the most academically bankrupt, morally depraved curriculum of all -- COMMON CORE.










Again I heard that my husband and I were out to profit from this. (NOT!) Indeed, we invested in bringing this gentleman to our town to bring a better curriculum there for ALL children! And look how cheap it is!

I cannot help but wonder how many of our students would have had better jobs and opportunities, stayed out of crime, had these narrow-minded, self-centered, self-righteous soldiers of Progressive Education opened their eyes to something that REALLY WORKED TO EDUCATE CHILDREN!

He did not put us here to take up space, go along to get along, or you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. He put us here for some purpose. And if making a difference in a child's life isn't one, I don't know what is.
