The first story I wrote, I plagiarized. I was eight years old and it was the first school assignment of the year after we'd spent the Summer, may parents and I, visiting my aunt in Boston. My aunt was attending MIT and applying for jobs with the CIA to help make spy-gadgets smaller. In short, she was a nerd, just like my dad, who spoke in a lot of acronyms.

The trip had been mainly walking and history lessons up to a certain point (there are great pictures somewhere of me throwing a fake bale of tea over the side of a fake old wooden ship). Anyway, I was eight, it was Boston. One night, my aunt decided to take me for a walk through the old city at night to show me the neighborhood cemetery.

It's hard work and for a long time you're not going to be recognized for your work. You'll often get bogged down in a depression that stems from not feeling recognized or even read. The enjoyable moments, for me, are when I get to hear from people who actually read my book from start to finish. I get to talk about something I made up like I'm an expert and it's kind of cool.(less)

You should work on an idea at least a year before you ask if its bad and then if the answer is "yes, this is horrible" you should begin re-writing. Writing can sometimes be the only artform where bad becomes good through persistence and productivity.(less)

Re-reading the scene where your protagonist and suspected antagonist meet for the first time.

So, I'm promoting Atlas on Facebook today with excerpts from the novel. In selecting my excerpts I read this brief scene where the detective, Victoria Rhodes, goes to publicly confront her prime suspect, Phillip J. Doe, with an accusation of Murder and Conspiracy. I've always liked the setting and chemistry in this scene. I'm still very proud of it.

Let me know what you think, huh?

“If we listened to our intellect we'd never have a love affair. We'd never have a friendship. We'd never go in business because we'd be cynical: "It's gonna go wrong." Or "She's going to hurt me."
