Finding the “good” in goodbye…

“Let’s say goodbye, the hundredth time, and then tomorrow we’ll do it again.” ~ My Chemical Romance

Goodbye resting chair. Goodbye DC. Goodbye love affair with public transportation. Goodbye beautiful city full of culture. Goodbye crazy men who run in shorts when it’s cold. Goodbye kind strangers, patiently guiding me from point “A” to point “B”. Goodbye cooked to order breakfast. Goodbye yummy desserts.

I had such a blast spending some quality one on one time with my teenage son. He’s ready to...

“I was right and you were wrong.” Whatever…

Our last day started with breakfast and laughter. My navigator mapped out our travel plans while I got ready. We had decided to go to the International Spy Museum, White House, National Archives, and perhaps the zoo. Ha, ha, ha…jokes on us.

For whatever reason, weI struggled with the Metro today! Convincing Noah that I was indeed correct took some fast talking. When we jumped the red line for the green and ended up far from our destination, I heard those words. You know; “I was right and you w...

Are we there yet?

We had an even later start today. Noah has his own room and he’s up into the wee hours- long after this chickadee is catching Zzzz’s! We finally made it to the Metro around 11am. Thankfully, it runs below our hotel. We don’t even have to go outside. :)

We changed our initial plans for the day and instead, we went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum, American History Museum, Washington Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial.

Protesting Bones!

By the time we had dinner, caught up with friends, and unpacked, Mama didn’t make it to bed until close to midnight! I had the best intentions of getting up at 7am this morning and arriving to the museums early, but…we finally left at 10:00am. Thankfully, I have the best travel companion! Anyone who knows me is aware of my map challenges! Noah, on the other hand, is an excellent navigator. He quickly mastered the DC Metro and we were on our way to the Air and Space Museum.

I can remember visit...

TICK TOCK TICK TOCK TICK TOCK…

“Biology is the least of what makes someone a mother.” ~ Oprah Winfrey

I belong to an exclusive club. Every day, men and women across the planet make the amazing decision to open their hearts and homes to a child in need of a forever family. We are parents whose children grow in the soul instead of the womb. We are parents whose children are no less loved or wanted. In fact, our kids are chosen. A divinely appointed love match is made in the heavens- the ties that...

How’s that bed working out for you?

“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and He will bless you for it.” ~ 1 Peter 3:9

Take the high road. The low road is crowded.

A friend was confronted with a sad truth yesterday- one she’d probably always known, but chose not to acknowledge. Nothing makes you take notice of faults like confrontation. Except, on this occasion, his poison was cloaked in a passive-aggressive a...

Courageously trying to eat chicken in an elevator…

Welcome to my weekend wrap-up; an eclectic mix of stories…or rather, the daily adventures of living life as Laurie Van Dermark. While the first two weeks of 2013 were less than fun, the rest have made my soul smile. The kids are awesome, no more headaches, work is great, personal life makes me giddy, the book is cooking, and I’m blessed with amazing friends. Life is good. Welcome to my weekend…

“The formula for achieving a successful relationship is simple: you should treat all disasters as if...

A Heavy Heart…

I’d intended to write my Monday blog tonight, sharing the events of my happy weekend in Birmingham, but instead, I came home this evening to very sad news. My dear friends in Chimbote are suffering. The devastating rains that swept through Peru, hit the town of Chimbote hard.

Understanding the gravity of the situation requires a glimpse into the daily life of a Chimbotano. Many live in estera dwellings with dirt floors and no roof to protect their belongings from the elements. They keep their...

Beware the soothsayer…

“I will put an end to witchcraft, and there will be no more fortune tellers.” Micah 5:12

When a man, whose intelligence is intoxicating, entices you with the dream, be cautious. The words he speaks may roll across his lips as “Let me whisk you away to this grand life we can have together”, but what he often means is “Let me whisk you away to this grand life we can have together, today.” I’m certainly not suggesting that you should doubt the person you love when they mount that white horse. I’m...

Broken record…YOU ARE AMAZING!

Are you tired of hearing me preach this message? I’m not tired of blogging about it when I receive inbox messages from broken-hearted young women.

Dear Beautiful Woman,

Have you looked at yourself in the mirror lately? There is no one on the planet more unique and destined for greatness than you! Your life serves a purpose to many people who depend on your encouraging smile and kind words, your shoulder to cry on when the winds of devastation blow hard and fast, your laughter to lighten a diffi...
