~~Excerpt 3~~

Neither did she, but they had gone  over it. The plan was that anytime they were out and shit got critical they split up. When her sister had bonded with and married the sheriff of Maxville, Ayden Daniels, the bond between Ayden and Kalissa extended through the twin bond to Khloe. All three of them could connect telepathically and emotionally, and the three of them could use the gift to tap into other magical beings’ powers. To keep the gift from falling into Khan’s hands, they agreed they should never be caught together because, together, they were both more powerful and also more vulnerable.

Khan would drain them of their magic, which would kill them instantly because a Divinity’s magic was tied to their life force. They couldn’t survive without it. Khan would then use that magic in his plans to merge the natural world and the Afterworld to the Underworld.

Today, they’d taken a huge risk with Lydia. She was eight months pregnant and, according to the magickin birth cycle, was due any day.

“Look, you said yourself that our stalker might be a guardian sent to watch over us. If that’s the case, then I’m not alone.”

“That’s just a hunch. We’re not sure.”

“Please, Lis. Go. I’ll be okay.”

Kalissa let out a heavy sigh and urged Lydia in front of her to shield the other Divinity from harm as they rushed toward the car.

The squealing of tires and the sight of a white mini-van barreling toward them sent Khloe’s heart into marathon speed. She gave her sister and her new best friend a kiss on their cheeks and took off through the parking lot, hoping the demon would take the bait.

She glanced over her shoulder to the BWM. Kalissa and Lydia were safe inside and pulling out of the parking space. Thank the gods. A pang of relief rolled through her and she prayed Kalissa and Lydia would make it home safe.

The roar of an engine drew her attention to the white box on wheels speeding toward her much too fast for a parking lot, closing in on her. She hit the sidewalk and ran toward the road. She wanted to lead them out of the city limits without becoming the next demon delicacy. The farther away from witnesses, the better. They had enough to deal with because of the demons. They didn’t need a twenty-first century lynch mob to contend with.

Blurb Blast: Dangerous Affairs by Diana Miller

Dangerous Affairs

by Diana Miller

BLURB:

When soap opera star Abby Langford leaves Los Angeles for her Minnesota hometown, she’s hoping to give her nine-year-old daughter the peaceful childhood she never knew. But instead of tranquility, Abby finds an old knife hidden between the walls of her new house. Then the nightmares start: a blood-soaked victim and a killer’s arm slicing through the air, again and again.

Abby wonders if she’s having the nervous breakdown the tabloids claim she already had, especially when sexy, skeptical police chief Josh Kincaid questions her story. When menacing hate mail arrives, Josh’s professional concern for Abby soon evolves into an intense attraction, and the feeling is mutual. And now Josh wonders if her psychic visions are of crimes past—or a premonition of terrors to come.

To survive, Abby and Josh must uncover the truth and stop a killer . . . before Abby’s worst nightmares come true.

~~ Excerpt ~~

The doorbell rang, shooting a fresh blast of cold panic through Abby. She opened her mouth, but swallowed her scream—it had to be the police. Bad guys didn’t use doorbells. She unlocked and opened the front door with frozen fingers.

Josh was standing on the front porch, dressed in black jeans and a burgundy polo shirt, his hand on the doorjamb and his eyes narrowed. “What’s such a damn emergency?”

“I got another message. From the person who hates me.”

Josh expelled a clearly exasperated breath, running his fingers through his dark hair. “Look, I know I told you to take the letters seriously, but since the mail carrier delivered it hours ago, this isn’t exactly an emergency. Bring it to the station tomorrow. I’d like to get back to my date.”

“It didn’t come in the mail this time.” Abby’s voice rose an octave, her words tripping over each other. “It’s on my bathroom mirror, written in lipstick. Someone got into my house, and they could get in again.” She sounded half hysterical, but she couldn’t help it. This was in a different category from her normal hate mail.

Josh stepped into the house, closing the door behind him. “You were gone tonight?”

She slumped against one wall of the foyer, hugging herself and struggling to regain her control.

“Maddie and I were at a birthday party for Laura’s youngest son. At Pizzaville. We got home around nine thirty, and I put Maddie to bed. I read in the family room for a while, then went back upstairs. And found it.”

“Show me.” Josh grabbed her forearm and directed her up the stairs.

The message was short and to the point, capital letters written in red lipstick on the wall-size mirror:

LEAVE OR DIE BITCH. FROM YOUR BIGGEST FAN

~~ About the Author ~~

When she was eight, Diana Miller decided she wanted to be Nancy Drew. But no matter how many garbage cans she dug through, conversations she “accidentally” overheard, and attics she searched, she never found a single cryptic letter, hidden staircase, or anything else even remotely mysterious. She worked as a lawyer, a soda jerk, a stay-at-home mom, a hospital admitting clerk, and a conference host before deciding that the best way to inject suspense into her otherwise satisfying life was by writing about it.

Diana is a five-time nominee for the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award and winner of a Golden Heart for Dangerous Affairs—a romantic suspense novel that shows not everyone in her home state is Minnesota Nice. She lives in the Twin Cities with her family.

~~Excerpt 2~~

Khloe gladly pledged to take a stand in the war. After all, it was Khan and his demonic army who’d taken her parents away from her almost two years ago. She was going to make them pay, no matter how long it took. Being long-lived, time was something she had plenty of.

The wind picked up, bringing a hint of coolness and the scent of coming rain. She looked up, inhaled, and smiled. Dark storm clouds filled the afternoon sky. She loved storms. Being able to call upon the elements and bend them to her will was her divine gift. So, she took every opportunity she could to enjoy them. “There’s a powerful storm headed our way.”

“It’s a good thing we’re going straight home.” Kalissa reached out to snatch Khloe’s cell from her.

She jerked away before Kalissa could grab it, laughed, and jogged ahead of the other two women. Kalissa’s blond curls, a shade darker than Khloe’s, and without pink streaks, were pulled back in ponytail, but it was the annoyance across her slightly oval face that made Khloe giggle with mischief. Walking backward in the direction of Kalissa’s new Beamer, Khloe scrolled through the pictures she had snapped of them shopping. Her twin hated her picture taken and would delete the photos once she got a hold of the phone. No way, Khloe had plans for these babies, like uploading them to the magickin social network, Magical Enchantments.

“Lo, stop.”

Khloe froze and snapped her head up to meet Kalissa’s violet, anxious gaze. The psychic connection to her twin told her she wasn’t talking about the phone. Hairs stood up on the back of her neck rose, and a cold shiver rolled down her spine. A new demonic power touched her awareness, different, colder than their daily stalker.

“Here.” She shoved her shopping bags to Kalissa and put the cell in her back pocket of her shorts.  “You and Lydia head home. I’ll catch up to you.”

Kalissa shook her head. “I don’t like this.”

Release Day Countdown: Death’s Storm Excerpt 1

I can’t believe it. Death’s Storm, book 2 in the Divinities series, releases on November 20th! That’s about 3 1/2 weeks away! To celebrate  I’m going to share with you 5 excerpt, with the first being today. The rest will post on the next two Mondays and Fridays. Then starting on 11/10, I’ll be posting daily character quotes from the book on my Facebook pages. Feel free to friend me and like my fan page.

~~Excerpt 1~~

Stepping off the curb to head to the car, Khloe stilled and let the warm air caress her skin. An electrical charge that only the select few magickin—like her and the other Divinities—could detect was palpable in the humid summer air.

Her spine tingled as the supernatural energy drifted on the wind, putting her on full alert. Reaching out with her senses, she relaxed. A little. The energy was familiar in an odd kind of way. Her admirer was nearby.

More like a stalker, really, without the creepy love letters and phone calls.

For the last month, someone had watched her and followed her every move. When the entity was near, a warm shiver rolled over her skin like a caress. The energy didn’t come from a human. Demon? Maybe. But, the power was too intense to be any demonic creature she’d come in contact with. She considered one of the gods, but that didn’t make sense either. The gods wouldn’t stalk her. They would send a messenger or deliver their message in person. She and the others had also thought it could be a guardian.

Whatever the entity was, it annoyed the hell out of her to be followed around and spied upon.

She scanned to mall parking lot and the sidewalk that lead to the various shops. Nothing remotely threatening came into view or reached out to her supernatural senses. Then again, she never saw anything when she sensed the presence. It had shown up last month, right after she and Kalissa had been thrust into an ancient war between witches and demons.

That was when she and Kalissa found a note from their mother telling them about the Sinew—a crystal sphere that held the magic of the worlds—and sent Kalissa on a mission to retrieve it. As Divinities, it was their duty to protect magickin from Khan, the new Bastard Lord of the Underworld.

I hope you like the teaser. Come back next Monday for #2 :)

Guest Post with Samantha Holt: Medieval recipes – what not to feed your lovers

‘Her lips brushed over the tip of his finger as her delicate teeth bit into the morsel and he bit back a groan. Why was he torturing himself thus? Yet, he could not stop. So he continued, hiding behind the pretence of courtly manners, as he felt himself harden with her every bite.’

There’s something a little bit sexy about eating with your fingers. A common practice in noble households was for the man to serve the woman. Thankfully, their eating habits were a lot more refined than we originally thought. Hands were washed before and after meals and napkins were often used, so it’s easy to create a sensual scene revolving around medieval meal times.

A lot of their recipes were very tasty, though they frequently ate sweet foods with savoury foods, enjoying meat dishes alongside custards and jellies. However, there are a few rather delightful recipes that I suspect could dampen even the steamiest of scenes and I thought I’d share some of these culinary delights with you.

Garbage

This consisted of all the bits of chicken that you would normally throw away, like the feet and the head, which was then boiled in broth and seasoned with herbs and salt.

Cow’s Udder

For cow’s udder which has been well washed and cooked, & put on a towel so it can rest well, & put it on a spit. For the udder’s sauce , take two or three pieces of toasted white bread, which are not burned at all, & take some broth with verjuice to temper the bread, & mix with four or five egg yolks, & put therein nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, saffron, & sugar, & let it boil well together, & put it on the roasted udder.

Gout recipe

This recipe calls for cow dung to be made into a juice.

For the gowte. Take & strene Cow Dongue & Drinke the Iuce & it will heale the gowte.

Pudding of Porpoise

Somehow it creeps me out that they refer to it as a him, a common occurrence in medieval recipes. I’d rather not form an attachment to my food before I eat it, thank you.

Take the Blood of him, & the grease of him self, & Oatmeal, & Salt, & Pepper, & Ginger, & mix these together well, & then put this in the Gut of the porpoise, & then let it boil easily, & not hard, a good while; & then take him up, & broil him a little, & then serve forth.

Cock Ale

It is not so much the inclusion of the cock that I find repulsive but the fact that it is left for so long.

Take eight gallons of Ale, take a Cock and boil him well; then take four pounds of Raisins of the Sun well stoned, two or three Nutmegs, three or four flakes of Mace, half a pound of Dates; beat these all in a Mortar, and put to them two quarts of the best Sack: and when the Ale hath done working, put these in, and stop it close six or seven days, and then bottle it, and a month after you may drink it.

These are some of the more mild recipes. There are plenty more extreme recipes that would have brought much delight to the lords and ladies but I think I shan’t be featuring them in any of my stories. Sheep’s penis can wait I think.

Blurb:

A medieval story of love and betrayal.

As a rebellion sweepsEngland, Lady Annabel finds her home overrun by rebels. Much to her relief, a dark knight comes to her rescue, claiming to have been sent to protect her by her uncle.

But Nicholas holds a secret about the job he was sent to do and it is a far cry from what Annabel believes it to be. As the attraction between them grows, Nicholas begins to question the dark life he has lived. But is it enough to change him and will Annabel ever trust again after learning the true nature of his sinful duty?

~~Excerpt~~

“What is your name?”

He stared at her as he paused mid-bite. Withdrawing the bread, he shifted uncomfortably.

“My name is of no import, my lady.”

“I would know the name of my rescuer.”

He looked to the floor. “I am no rescuer, just a lowly knight doing his duty.”

“Your modesty becomes you, Sir Knight, but I would still know your name.”

Annabel awaited his response, the air between them growing uncomfortably thick.

He heaved a sigh, wondering how it was that a diminutive woman had got the better of him.

“Nicholas,” he grated out reluctantly.

“Nicholas,” she repeated softly. “And I am Annabel.”

“I know, my lady.”

“Nay, Annabel. Not ‘my lady’. You have surely earned the right to address me as such.”

He shook his head, dropping his gaze to the ground once more. He could not bring himself to utter her name, not when he knew what was to come. “Nay, my lady, I am your servant and I will address you as a servant should.”

Annabel must have sensed she was fighting a losing battle as she protested no more and fell silent. Nicholas risked sideways glances at her as her as she nibbled delicately on the hardened bread, and he realised he took far too much pleasure in the sight of her ample lips moving with each bite.

Brushing the crumbs from her skirts, Nicholas watched, mesmerised, as she twisted her long braid over her shoulder. Tugging on the red ribbon that tied the end of the braid, it loosened, sending the length of her hair shimmering across her shoulders. It brushed the dirt and Nicholas felt his mouth dry as she touched a finger to his arm. Surrounded by a halo of hair, she glanced up at him, her mouth curling. Without a word, she tied the ribbon about his large arm and fussed with it until she was satisfied.

Nicholas touched tentatively at the ribbon and gave her a perplexed look.

“You saved my life, Nicholas. ‘Tis a favour from a lady to a knight.” She grinned at his confusion. “You have received favours before, surely? I would expect a knight of your valour to have championed many a lady.”

He wondered if she was teasing him but her expression was completely guileless. He groaned inwardly. This woman probably believed wholeheartedly in courtly love. From his little experience he had come to conclude that it did not exist.

“For fear of disappointing you, my lady, I am sorry to admit that there you are mistaken. I have championed no ladies.”

“Well, ‘tis no matter,” she told him with a tender smile, “For you have championed me.”

Unable to bare her dazzling eyes any longer, he stood abruptly. Champion? He laughed inwardly. She had no idea of the kind of man he was, and he was thoroughly aware that he was far removed from the heroic knights that minstrels and poets spoke of.

He felt a pang of something, an uncomfortable sensation settling in his gut. Nicholas couldn’t name it but he didn’t like its implications. For all her naivety and gentle manners, this woman was going to be trouble. He felt threatened by her somehow, as if she had directly challenged him rather than quietly accepting his every word without question.

“Are you ready to continue on, my lady?”

Annabel sighed and stood, in spite of her obvious weariness. “I am in your hands, Nicholas. I will do whatever you command.”

Nicholas tried to tamp down on the desire stirring in his loins at her words and failed. Instead, he grunted and turned away, stomping off without checking if she was following. The sooner this job was over, the better.

Author interview with JoAnne Kenrick

Welcome JoAnne! Please start off by telling us a little about yourself.

I’m an almost forty year old who has finally found the meaning to her life. Writing! What a blessing. But also a shame I didn’t realize it sooner. Maybe all that traveling both distracted me from what I should have been doing as well as inspiring what I am now doing. I write both paranormal and contemporary romance stories and have a huge crush on all things vampire. Oh, and I have an unhealthy addiction to realty shows.

Is Shamrocked a single title, or part of a series?

It’s apart of the bestselling Irish Kisses series, and is book two.

What were your inspirations for the story?

The readers inspired–demanded–this story after having read Sweet Irish Kiss, which was originally meant as a stand alone. Now it has four books in a series. Shamrocked is the second book, the following two are coming out in just a short while. Devlin, a secondary character in Sweet Irish Kiss was the inspiration for Shamrocked, him and his fetish for sexy toys.

Please share your setting for Shamrocked. Have you ever lived or visited there? If so, what did you like most?

The setting for Shamrocked is Bell’s Irish Pub in Soho London and a hotel and bar in Nottinghill. I’ve been to both Soho and Nottinghill, but Bell’s Irish Pub is fictional, so I’ve only ever visited there in my imagination.

When did the writing bug first bite?

I used to have a meditation radio show, which followed my non-fiction articles. I enjoyed the creative freedom of ‘making things up’ and I went from ten minute walks in poppy fields and rainbow water to writing my first novel.

Who are you favorite authors, book/series?

Blackwater series by Anne Rainey and Amoveo Legacy by Sara Humphreys

What is your most favorite childhood memory?

Parched on the old metal swing in the backyard, wearing a new powder blue cotton summer dress and matching shawl. I sang away to the birds and admired my new blue shoes as I kicked out my legs out to boost myself higher. Not a care in the world.

Do you have any hobbies or special things you like to do in your spear time?

I like to meditate and have paranormal show/movie feasts. not at the same time, obviously.

Boxers, brief or commando?

boxer briefs

Favorite eye color?

blue/green

What’s the strangest thing you’ve heard or seen?

Oh, neat question. I had to think for a minute but…

Shamrocked

by JoAnne Kenrick

Devlin Kinney is focused on his Irish Rock band, Shamrocked. Between that and tending bar at Bell’s Irish Pub, he’s rushed off his feet. Still, he’s envious of Shaun who found his perfect woman through Madame Eve’s exclusive agency, 1Night Stand.

Pushed for time, he follows his friend’s lead and hopes to be matched with a woman ballsy enough to share in his fetish for things that go buzzzz.

At the event of the year for soap stars, Elizabeth Grant meets Devlin and mistakes him for her soon-to-be co-star on The East End. Before she has a chance to confess she’s not his 1Night Stand as he seems to think, the silver-tongued smooth dancer proves irresistible. He seems perfect…for one night of pleasure. She’s ready to play the role of her life!

Will his Irish charm and toys be enough to hold onto his leading lady, or will his heart be shamrocked into next week?

~~Excerpt~~

Surrounded by bridesmaids—the hottest guy in the place. His thick Irish brogue carried over the chattering wedding crowd and bad party songs.

Swallowing any signs of stage fright, she checked her fake hair in a mirrored wall, plumped her boobs, and plastered on a smile before making a beeline for her drop-dead gorgeous, future co-star.

She waded through the rough sea of pink-chiffoned up women, snapped out her arm, and took his hand like one of those shaking weight things. Thought she’d blown it until his mouth tilted up into a tempting smile. Dimples. Oh, my. He would be popular with the ladies. Might even help get her noticed by movie producers. Dating this hottie would get her on every front page known to the British public.

“Liz.” She fought to keep focused on his face rather than his thick muscles and rhythmic movements. She couldn’t recall ever seeing a man who could make dancing to All Night Long by Lionel Ritchie so goddamned sexy. His jig was infectious—her arm swayed in beat with his, their hands still clasped together.

“As in Elizabeth?”

“Uh-huh.” The swarm of bridesmaids knitted their brows and pursed their lips. One even stamped her foot. Liz couldn’t help but turning on a sweet smile. “Buh-bye, ladies.”

Tuesday Tease: Death’s Storm 10/23/12

Hello! I hope everyone is well today. I’m like being a tease today, so I have a small sample of my soon to be released Death’s Storm. Enjoy!

Jagger tossed the Amiddian to the side, stepped away from the overturned van, and froze. Khloe stood on the shoulder of the road about fifteen feet ahead, watching him. Her pink-streaked blond hair framed her oval face, making her look like a pissed off angel. He took a step forward and felt the presence of another demon. He turned to the new energy to see a horned, blue skinned demon advancing on Khloe.

Fuck. Where were they coming from?

Letting out a low growl, Jagger materialized in front of the demon and grabbed him by the front of his shirt. Holding the hell-spawn off the ground, Jagger let his fangs drop. “What do you want with her?”

The demon narrowed his eyes and smirked, but said nothing.

Tightening his grip, Jagger gave the demon one more chance. “You can tell me or I’ll drain the memories from your useless soul.”
