Magic, witches, and romance

What I love about writing The Divinities is the magic intertwined with suspense and romance. I love to able to put an otherworldly feel to the characters and the world around them.

The Divinities aren’t just about the witches and magic. It’s about love, family, and protecting those around you. In the back story of  the series there’s an old war between witches and demons that never really died. And with a new ruler in the Underworld it is reaching a new level. Each novel tells of the journey of  the couple and their place in the war.

The Divinities are witches with special god-like powers. Each possess a Divine gift different from the others. Although two or more can have the same gift, it still is slightly different depending on the witch’s personality and ruling element. The gift can range from visions to shapeshifting. But there is also centuries of mixed bloodlines that split to the Elders’ theories between the Divinities being descendants of the gods and the different magical bloodlines causing the mutant gene that gives them supernatural powers.

I’m unsure myself where this will go and how much risks the Divinities are willing to take to find out. But right now their main objective is to protect the Sinew-the power source of all magic-and send the demons back to hell, where they belong.

A call for FAQ and giveaway ideas

Morning everyone! I think my five day mini vacation is finally catching up to me. I’m way too tired this morning. Either that or I’m coming down with a cold, and I so don’t have time for that.

I want to put together a FAQ section for my site. So I’m looking for questions. LOL. Send me your questions by using the form on the contact page, email me at lia(at)liadavisnovels(dot)com, or leave them in the comments. Please be mindful that I will not answer them in a reply back to you. Instead, I will collect the questions and compile a list and post the Qs and As as a separate FAQ page on the website.

What kind of questions? Anything about my writing, my books, the characters, what’s coming  and so on. I will not answer anything personal, so please keep the questions writing and fictional romance related. :)

Also I’m going to start a series of Christmas/holiday giveaways in December and I’m looking for ideas on what kind of gifts to give away. I have Starbucks GC and hand-made book thongs already on the list. And of course swag packs go out with each drawing.

Thanks so much to ALL of you for following the blog and my work. I really appreciate your support. And don’t forget I’m always welcome to more Street Team members. ;) Love you guys!

Lia

Guest post with Char Chaffin

Hi everyone, I’m Char Chaffin, and excited to be hanging out with Lia Davis! I’m chatting about my latest release, Unsafe Haven, which is set in Southwest Alaska, and I also have an excerpt from my book to share, as well as some fun facts about our forty-ninth state. So pull up a seat and have a slice of Pound Cake with Wild Blueberry Sauce (a traditional dessert from Fairbanks,Alaska, where I used to live). I’ll even provide the recipe!

When I first started plotting out Unsafe Haven, I wasn’t considering Alaska as a setting. I’d fleshed out my heroine first, which is a departure from the norm for me, as I always seem to craft my male characters far easier. But Kendall, my heroine, came to me quickly. I wanted her to be a little broken, a little vulnerable, leery of men and gun-shy. In short, kind of a wreck. Why? Because before I even began the book I knew I had to have a villain.

I’ve wanted to write a villain for a long time. But it’s not always easy. It’s not like I woke up in the morning, plopped myself in front of my laptop and announced, “Today I shall make a villain!” My brain doesn’t bend that way, at least not creatively. But the day I started plotting Kendall, she came out of my head on the run from a nasty sociopath, which, by the way, are a total blast to write. I immediately began churning locales, but (kind of a no-brainer for me) only one would do:Alaska. Immense, sparsely populated, dangerously gorgeous Alaska.

You can get lost in Alaska, often called the “last bastion of freedom in the US.” I don’t know about that, since the Alaska State Troopers are awesome and very little escapes their notice. But yes, there are plenty of places in Alaska where you won’t be bothered if you don’t wish to be. Move out to the bush, live out on the tundra and eke out a rough living the way so many Native Alaskans still do, and you’ll find your bastion of freedom, I guarantee.

But Kendall needed more than freedom from the sociopath, who also happened to be her ex-fiancé: she needed protection, safety, a haven. So I sent her to fictional Staamat, a small, predominantly Native Alaskan village near the Kuskokwim River in the desolate but infinitely beautiful Southwest. And there, she meets Denn Nulo, Chief of Staamat’s two-man police force, strong enough and loving enough to change her mind about being leery of ever again letting down her guard. She runs from danger to sanctuary, from abuse to endless, patient and passionate love.

HEA (Happy-Ever-After), right?

Well, no. Because then the book would have been like ten pages long. ::grin:: With no conflict. And what on earth would my sociopath have done with himself?

What I loved most about writing Unsafe Haven was all the memories I could pull from my years in Alaska. The town moose that hung around our house in Fairbanks one summer and ate all my flowers, then curled up in our yard and chewed its cud like it owned the place. Tiny villages with their gravel roads that go only so many miles and just stop, usually because there’s either a mountain, a river, or the spongiest tundra in the world stopping them from extending very far. Driving from Fairbanks to Anchorage—over three hundred sixty miles one way—just to go school clothes shopping . . . making a day trip of it—and thinking it no big deal to drive that danged far. Ravens so huge and tough, they regularly beat up on cats, and those long June days when the sun barely sets and you can sit on your porch at one in the morning and read a book. I’d write a scene, get choked up, stop and compose myself, then write another scene, remember how much I miss Alaska, stop and dig for a tissue—well, you get the idea. I wrote the first third of the book last October in a two-month period when I visited my daughter and family in Fairbanks. When I could look out the window and watch the snow falling and think to myself, “Why am I living elsewhere?”

Every state in our great country is beautiful, but at its creation Alaska was on the receiving end of an extra dollop of amazing. I’ve been in every state and I can tell you there’s perfection all over the US. But the sixteen years I lived in Alaska were unique.  It’s something I’ll never forget.

Southwest, the setting for Unsafe Haven, is one of the least populated regions in Alaska, for a very good reason: it’s loaded with lakes, rivers, and mountain ranges large enough to raise those transportation problems I already mentioned. Tundra and permafrost can cause ground shifting making it difficult to build roads, never mind the expense and impossibility of connecting those roads for more than a few miles. Those tiny villages scattered here and there along waterways and nestled at the base of mountain ranges exist by subsistence, living much the way Native Alaskans lived a hundred years ago. Some have no electricity or plumbing. Rough-hewn cabins and Quonset huts, some split-cedar homes and even a few cinder block houses are the norm. Roads are narrow and often dirt or gravel, and if a village is lucky enough to exist near a zinc or other mineral mine, they fare better inasmuch as the mining company will often build housing and roads. The village reaps the benefits of what the mine builds.

Here’s the thing about remote Alaska: it may be difficult and time-consuming to get there, but it’s just as difficult to get out when danger comes to find you, as Kendall will discover. Alaska isn’t called “The Last Frontier” for nothing. Bush planes land all the time but they’re not always readily available with a pilot standing by. Waterways can barge you out but not when there’s ice locking up the river. In other words,Kendall can hide, but she can’t run. And her nightmare past is only a few thousand miles away, a drop in the bucket for a determined sociopath.

Unsafe Haven is a novel so very dear to my heart, and I hope everyone who reads it takes from it a taste of what Alaska is all about. Then again, with so many diverse regions,Alaska is different for everyone who crosses its state line looking for adventure.

Look for Unsafe Haven from Soul Mate Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble!

How about a blurb? Yep, I got one:

For Kendall Martin, a small, remote village in Southwest Alaska seems like a good place to start over. On the run from an abusive relationship, she leaves everything familiar behind and begins a new life as owner of a small souvenir and sportsman trading post in picturesque Staamat.

Denn Nulo knows everyone in town: he’s the Chief of Police in Staamat. He’s lived there all his life, except for his college years, spent in Anchorage. Originally planning on practicing criminal law and living in Anchorage permanently, Denn is forced to change his plans when he receives word that his widowed mother has passed away, leaving his young sister, Luna, alone. Denn comes back to Staamat to care for Luna.

When Kendall meets Denn, she begins to believe there are truly good men in the world. Denn is everything she wants: strong, loving, dedicated to family, protective. . .and patient. There is instant attraction between them, but Kendall is leery of men, and Denn craves a serious relationship that includes marriage and children. Their courtship is a conflicting mix of hesitancy and passion, with Luna, desperately needing a mother figure in her life, cheering them on.

As Kendall learns how to trust again and her romance with Denn grows more intense, a local woman who’s had her eye on Denn for years releases a torrent of damaging jealousy. . .and the nightmare from Kendall’s past discovers where she’s hidden herself.

I promised an excerpt, and here it is:

Kendall unlocked the front door of the Last Outfitters Post and stepped outside. In the sunlight the ‘Grand Opening’ banner she’d affixed over the entrance flapped in the brisk morning breeze, accompanied by the occasional caw of a raven. On each side of the portico, hanging baskets of petunias, fuchsia and lobelia grew a bit more each day, adding a nice splash of color. The urge to clap in delight proved too much to resist, and she didn’t care if anyone saw her. Even so, she checked out the parking lot, just to make sure she hadn’t been observed, then shook her head at her silliness.

Her first two weeks open for business had surprised her with its success. A steady, daily flow of customers reinforced her certainty she’d done the right thing by moving to Staamat and starting a new life. It amazed her, how many local people planned hiking and fishing adventures and came to her for their supplies.

They weren’t all local. Tourists now came to Staamat, some staying in New Mina, Aniak or Bethel, and others vying for a reservation at The Four Hills Inn. They zipped around on rented bicycles or on foot, cameras clicking away, willing to pay for a quick airlift to some of the villages sporadically scattered from here to Bethel. Several enterprising locals who owned vehicles hired themselves out as impromptu cabbies, and even a few boat owners ferried visitors up and down the Kuskokwim. One of Frank Purna’s cousins ran a seasonal air and water taxi service.

A retired musher, who lived fifteen miles north of Puffin Circle, brought his dogs into town and offered dogsled rides, substituting special wheels for the standard sled skis. Tourists loved it. The bustle of activity and commerce added life to the usually quiet Staamat streets.

Summer had come to Southwestern Alaska, and Kendall found herself utterly charmed by the longer days and the sun’s welcoming warmth. Much of her nervousness about hordes of tourists streaming into Alaska had diminished, too. Perhaps the cheechako was slowly becoming a sourdough, after all.

With the exception of a few high school students nosing around without buying anything, she’d had decent sales every day. Now, on Saturday, she anticipated another six hours of hearing her cash register ring.

Moving to the main counter, she straightened a display of teriyaki jerky and refolded a stack of sweatshirts emblazoned with a grinning mosquito and the words, Alaska State Bird. The goofy looking, bloodsucking insect—wearing bunny boots, no less—reminded her to spray her arms with Deet when she ventured outside. Otherwise, she’d end up with plenty of bites.

The string of bells over the doorway jingled, and Kendall smiled with pleasure as Luna ran in. “Kennie, Denn says you’re putting me to work.” She threw her thin arms around Kendall’s waist and gave her a breath-stealing squeeze.

“Umph.”Kendall made suffocating noises while Luna giggled and squeezed harder. When she could inhale again, she dropped a kiss on Luna’s head. “How are you feeling today? Denn said you had a rough evening.”

“I’m okay. I had a reaction to some salad dressing Jo gave us. She puts fireweed honey in it, and I kind of forgot I wasn’t supposed to eat lots of it.” Luna pulled away and prowled the nearest rack, flipping through tee shirts and hoodies. She sent Kendall a mournful look. “It was so good, I took twice as much as I should have. But I felt a lot better after I puked.” Her grin back in place, she dashed to the counter and swiped a piece of jerky. “See, I’m good to go.” She bit in with enthusiasm.

“Drink some water after you eat that, you nimrod.” Denn stepped into the store, a stern expression on his face. He winked at Kendall. “Make sure you dock her pay for snacking on the job.” He closed the door and removed his cap, shaking his hair loose.

Kendall’s pulse stuttered at the sight of that fall of black silk. He caught her stare and a languid smile broke over his face. She blushed, and the smile widened.

His advance toward her set her heart to pounding. Dressed in his uniform, his rolled-up sleeves a concession to the warm day, Denn cut an imposing figure. Yet his size had ceased to intimidate, not after a month of getting to know him. He reached her side and curled his arm around her shoulders, pressed a kiss to her forehead, as comforting as the one she’d given his sister.

“Hi. I’ve brought you slave labor. Please wear her out so I can strong-arm her into bed right after supper.” His low words teased the stray hair at Kendall’s temple. The heat from his lower lip, as it caught one of her curls and brushed it aside, would have buckled her knees if she hadn’t been holding the edge of the counter.

He chuckled softly in her ear, an acknowledgment of what his nearness did to her. When she reared back, the gleam she spotted in his amber eyes couldn’t be mistaken for anything but desire.

I’m not ready for this. Her brain admitted the truth even as her body relaxed, leaned into his, and made itself at home. The moment lengthened into seconds as she enjoyed his warm strength, refusing to further question her need for caution. He would never hurt her; she knew this.

Luna skipped closer, wearing a camouflage baseball cap boasting a set of stuffed moose antlers. “I don’t think this cap’s gonna fool any moose.” She viewed herself in a nearby mirror, striking a pose. “You should send me to Anchorage, Denn. I could be a model.”

“For what? Bullwinkle?” Denn yanked the cap over his sister’s eyes. “Get real. You’ll go in the mines with a pick and a shovel, and give me all the gold you find,” he growled, twirling an imaginary mustache.

“Ha, as if.” Luna danced around him, caught random locks of his hair and tugged, fast and sly.

He lunged after her and stuffed her under his arm.

“Let go! I have to work for a living, you know.” She wriggled like a slippery eel, her brows scrunched in a mock frown. “Let go, or I scream police brutality.”

“You watch too much CSI. Go make yourself useful.” He released her with a swat to her jeans-clad bottom, and she ran toward the back storeroom where Kendall had left the door unlocked. Luna would spend the afternoon unpacking and pricing several boxes of Alaskana souvenirs.

He turned to Kendall. “What a screwball. You might have to handcuff her to the storeroom to get any work out of her.” His comment and their antics had made her grin even as the residual tenderness for Luna, reflected in his eyes, simply melted her.

“She’s your entire world, isn’t she?”Kendall heard the catch in her voice.

Denn nodded. “Yes, she is. Luna is the only family I’ve got left. Her health problems scared the crap out of me when we first discovered she had diabetes. Try explaining to a five-year-old why she can’t eat grape jelly or a Hershey bar. She tried my mother’s patience not only daily, but hourly. I still shudder to remember what it was like to give her insulin shots.” He leaned against the counter, his mind obviously dwelling in the past. “When I left for UAA, it was hard on Mom even though she knew it was best for me to go. Luna had only been on insulin for maybe six months. I honestly don’t know how Mom got through it.”

He scraped a hand through his hair in the gesture of frustration she’d come to recognize. “I’d fly home between semesters, and they’d both be wrecks. A couple of times I thought, what the hell, I’ll just quit school and come back to help Mom. But whenever I brought it up, she’d get mad and forbid me to drop out.”

“She sounds like an amazing woman.”

“Yeah. Mom was one in a million. Her faith in me kept me in school. But then she died, and I had to quit, anyhow.”

“Denn . . .” She didn’t know what to say. Five years wasn’t nearly long enough to get over such a tragedy. He still dealt with the pain of his mother’s passing. She could sure relate, even if the words wouldn’t come so easily.

Kendall moved closer and laid a hand on his arm. Quietly, she said, “Your mother would be proud of the life you’ve made. The way you are with Luna, loving and devoted . . . if your mother were here, she’d tell you what a wonderful job you’re doing, parenting your sister. Not everyone could handle her health issues, either.” Her hand slid up his arm, curved over his shoulder and reached his cheek, to cup it gently. “You should be proud, too. Coming back here was the right thing to do, and you never hesitated. Did you?” She searched his eyes as she spoke.

“No. I never hesitated. I packed it all up and moved here, and I’ve never once regretted it. Well, maybe a little,” he admitted. “It was hard to say goodbye to a college degree, only eight months away from the damned diploma.”

“Well, nothing says you can’t take some online courses, or whatever’s available out this far, and finish, get your diploma. Right?”

He smiled at her, one heart-stopping, breath-stealing smile. Taking her hand from his cheek, he brought her palm to his mouth and pressed his lips there. Against her skin he murmured, “Nothing at all.”

For those of you who like to bake, here’s that recipe for Pound Cake with Wild Blueberry Sauce. Picking wild blueberries on the tundra is a lot of fun and the berries are amazing in taste. But when you see “blue scat,” you’d better run. Why? Because bears adore wild blueberries, and what blue food goes in, has to come out. . . I surely don’t have to draw you a picture, right? Ahem, okay, on to the recipe!

POUND CAKE WITH WILD BLUEBERRY SAUCE

Cake:

1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at cool room temperature
1  cup sugar
4 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
¼ cup honey
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
2 cups sifted cake flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease the bottom of an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2-inch loaf pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper, then grease and flour the pan.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed for 3 to 4 minutes, until light. Meanwhile, put the eggs, honey, vanilla, and lemon zest in a glass measuring cup but do not combine. With the mixer on medium-low speed, add the egg mixture, one egg at a time, scraping down the bowl and allowing each egg to become incorporated before adding the next egg.

Sift together the flour, salt, and baking powder. With the mixer on low speed, add it slowly to the batter until just combined. Finish mixing the batter with a rubber spatula and pour it into the prepared pan. Smooth the top. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 15 minutes, turn out onto a baking rack, and cool completely. Slice into desired thickness before adding blueberry sauce.

Wild Blueberry Sauce:

2/3 cup brown sugar

1 TBSP corn starch

dash of salt

2/3 cup water

2 cups fresh blueberries, picked wild if you can get them

Cook all ingredients except the blueberries until thick. Add blueberries, return to boil, chill completely and serve over the sliced cake.

Hope you enjoy this taste of Alaska!

I have Kalissa and Khloe from my Divinities series with me today and we’re talking about shopping.

Me: Thanks, both of you, for coming by.

Kalissa: Thank you for having us.

Khloe: Yes, it’s nice to get away from our hectic lives to talk about my favorite pass time. Well, next to slaying demons that is.

Me: *I laughed* That’s funny to hear you say that since you’re mated to one.

*Kalissa laughed and agreed with me*

Khloe: Well, yes. But Jagger isn’t really a demon. *She leans in and lowers her voice* He’s more like an Underworld God. But don’t tell him I said that. His ego is big enough. *She winks and sits back in her chair*

Me: Kalissa, I know you don’t care for shopping. Has there ever been a time that you just had to go out on Black Friday to get something at an amazing price.

Kalissa: *a slight shutter went through her* Hell no. I don’t like crowds. Humans make me a little nervous especially when they are fighting over an item because it’s on sale. *rolls her eyes* I mean come on. Now a days you can buy that same items on line, in your pj’s.

Me: I’m so with you there.

Khloe: Crowds don’t bother me so much. I plan to take Jagger with me. *she grinned* That way he can growl at the rude people.

Me: You are so not right.

Khloe: *smiles wickedly* I know

Me: Well that’s all the time we have. Our readers have other blogs to visit and shopping to do. Thanks for the chat.

Kalissa and Khloe: *speaks at the same time* You’re welcome.

Interview with Khloe, the ‘different’ twin

It’s hard to sum up Khloe with just one word. She walks by her own beat, plays by her rules, but she loves her family and loves her place in the war between witches and demons.

Lia: Hi, Lo. How are you today?

Khloe: Hi! I’m great.

Lia: Please share a little about yourself.

Khloe: * crinkles her nose* If I have to…hmm. I’m a twin, a technology nerd, and elemental.

Lia: Explain to the readers how elemental for you is different than the normal witch.

Khloe:  I’m not normal?

Lia: *I laugh at her attempt of being offended* No, Lo. You are far from normal.

Khloe: *shrugs* Normal would be boring anyway. Elemental for me, and other Divinities with the gift, is much more than just calling to elements. My Divine gift is to call and control the elements. It’s mostly through my emotions, so I guess that’s why I’m so… emotional.

Lia: Your not really emotional. Lets call it spontaneous with mood swings.

Khloe: *frowns* I don’t have mood swings.

*I raise my brows at her*

Maybe. But I’ve gotten better at the charge-in-first-ask-later thing. Now I give the demons a half of second to spill before I charge in and take names.

Lia: Yes, Jagger said you were learning.

Khloe: *she snorted, then narrowed her eyes on me* You spoke to Jagger? When?

Lia: I spoke to him briefly the other day. I’m interviewing him tomorrow at Carrie Ann Ryan’s blog.

Khloe: I’ll have to have a chat with him. He didn’t mention it to me.

Lia: He’s a death demon, a guardian. He’s use to giving orders.

Khloe: Yeah, we’re working on that.

Win a Nook from Decadent Publishing

Hello! Lia here and I have Ema from Ravished Before Sunrise with me today for a short interview about that vampire of hers.

Lia: Hi, Ema. How are you?

Ema: I’m great, and you?

Lia: Oh, I can’t complain. How is that vampire of yours?

Ema: *her face brightens and lips curl into a shy smile * As yummy as ever. Darian is the best thing to come into my life. It’s a huge relief not to hide my strange abilities anymore.

Lia:  I could only imagine. Did you ever dream of your one-night turning out the way it did?

Ema: No, never. I thought it would be a passionate rump and wake the next morning with memories of a wonderfully adventurous night. Instead I got a vampire that woke up my sleeping sex demon and challenges both sides of me every day.

Lia: Is Darian a romantic?

Ema: *a blush creeps into her cheeks* Just when I think he has out done himself, he surprises me. But my favorite time together is our nightly walks. We go on them no matter what the weather is like.  Living in the coven for most of my life, I’ve adopted the witches’ values on nature and the purity of it. Darian makes sure I enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. *she giggles* I’ll just say that there’s something magical about making love under the stars.

Lia: I bet. Thanks you, Emalee, for taking time to talk with me today.

Ema:  It is always a pleasure.

Ravished Before Sunrise

By Lia Davis

Blurb:

Born with the unusual ability to see what truly lies in the shadows, Emalee Black is stuck between two worlds, the paranormal and the human. Neither one accepts or understands her and she’s forced to live a quiet, boring life in hiding. When her best friend mentions 1Night Stand dating service, Ema chooses a role-playing adventure straight out of her romantic fantasies. She’s to hunt her very own vampire and have her wicked way him.

Vampire Darian Wyman is surprised when his daughter signs him up for a one-night stand with an exclusive matching agency. At first he’s appalled by the idea, but as he reads the details of the date he becomes intrigued. For one night he will get away from the life he has long grown tired of to be hunted and captured by a would-be huntress. But he has plans of his own for his little vixen.

However, when Darian discovers the truth about Ema’s inhuman abilities, the date could end before it gets started.
