What is your favorite cartoon fandom?

I have a few favorite cartoons that I nerd out about. Thanks to Youtube I can geek out over my favorite 80s cartoons. And really I loved most 80s cartoons when I was little. It is hard to pinpoint real favorites other then Rainbow Bright, which I still have my collection. I never got all the dolls by the time they stopped making them. I still look out for them in yard, garage and estate sales. I know I can probably get them on ebay, but I think the fun is the actual hunting for them. It looks like though I will have to resort to ebay to finish off my collection.
Some years ago, when my sister was younger. There is a 12 year gap between us. So it gave me the excuse to watch cartoons while I finished up high school and in college, when I watched her and her friends. One of my other cartoon loves came from that. Sailor Moon. I am a huge Sailor Moon nerd. I love the storyline, the doomed princess of the moon and the prince of earth of the past, the present with the scouts in high school, and then skipping to the future. It is altogether an epic love story.
The best part of most fandoms is that they never really die out. A few years ago they released Rainbow Japan, which hopefully I won’t have to wait to watch it with English subtitles. Bright dolls with a DVD of the original cartoon. I was able to add another doll and watch the cartoon I loved when I was little. And now with youtube I can actually watch the cartoon. Same with Sailor Moon, Cartoon network never played the last season of the cartoon, but thanks to youtube I was able to watch it. But now the Sailor Scouts are back! They have rereleased the manga, which I am only on book 4. And there is a new cartoon to be released this winter in

What are some of your favorite cartoons that make you nerd out?

Book Review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Ready Player One by Ernest ClineAs I am having fandom month on my blog a co-worker told me about Ready Player One. If you are a nerd or geek or fan of 80s pop culture you need to read this book.
A world at stake.A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday’s icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes’s oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig.
And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle.
Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt—among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize. Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life—and love—in the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.
At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Because I am a nerd I enjoyed this book so much. Just references from certain geekverses that made you go AHAH like the main character Wade ends up with a class Firefly space ship to fly his avatar around, as well as an x-wing. I am a huge 80s movie nerd and this book is highly 80s trivia laden since the creator of the OASIS loved the 80s until his death. He created a fun treasure hunt that makes you think along with the characters to solve the riddles. It has become one of my new favorites, and I will be rereading this one for sure because of how much I enjoyed it. There is a little romance, as well as human issues as this is a dystopianish world. You watch the main character Wade grow and learn what is important with more responsibility as he unlocks the clues.
Available on ebook and in print!

Author Jennifer Brown stops in to tell us about her fandom

I was taught how to read at a very young age. My mom worked with me and I was able to read at the age of four. It was only natural that reading, then writing became a passion for me.

The first books I remember falling in love with, were The Hollister series. It followed a group of young siblings who set out to solve mysteries. It's a very old series but it's what launched my passion for mysteries, and also probably ignited my love for series as well. I went from reading The Hollisters to Nancy Drew.

I became drawn to these stories, how they kept you guessing and wondering who did it. Now this was around third grade, right as I was starting to write my own stories. These story lines became a big influence on my own writing which led me to start writing my own mystery series in middle school called The Mystery Club. It was like The Babysitter's Club, only the kids solved mysteries instead.

I ended up dabbling in young adult fiction later on, but the love of the mystery genre never fully left me. If anything it evolved into suspense and  thrillers which enticed me even more. I'm not sure exactly who the first suspense author was I ever read, but an instinctive estimate tells me it was Mary Higgins Clark. I found myself blown away by the twists, and the edge of the story lines which seemed a lot more luring than mysteries.

In 2007 I was introduced to my absolute favorite suspense/thriller author, Linwood Barclay when I read No Time For Goodbye. I have been hooked on every book he's written since, I have not been disappointed by a story line yet. I am dying in excitement to read the sequel to No Time For Goodbye due out next year. I have even teasingly dubbed his writing as book crack, it is so addicting and mind blowing.

No other genre has been able to grab me and make me forget about my problems for a while like suspense and thrillers have. I like being surprised in a story line, discovering a twist that I just didn't see coming. Whether I am reading it or writing it, suspense is my ultimate fandom.

I am a mother to three beautiful children, they keep me busy. I live in a small town that’s filled with monsters and really nice people alike. I love taking walks around the mountain trails where I live and I love taking trips to the Ocean, especially the South Carolina beaches. The ocean brings me tranquility and refreshes me, but I don’t get to go there often enough. Some mornings I listen to nothing but sad country songs for hours but when I write, I usually buckle down with my headphones and listen to something raw and angry like  Seether,  and Stone Sour.     I can be shy around people but I’m mostly always honest within myself. In many ways, on many levels, I express different parts of myself through my characters. Someone told me once that you are only as old as you feel  and I love that! In fact, I love that idea because personally, have no intentions of ever growing up!  I want to be 18 forever no matter what they do to me. LOL!
Author LinksAmazon Author PageBlogFacebook Personal PageGoodreadsShattered Skies Facebook Fan PageTwitterWebsiteExcerptI had no clue what the big deal was. I had no intention of talking to Akia again; well maybe one more time to get my wallet, but that was the end of it. He was the King for crying out loud. He had better things to do then sit and pine away over me. Even as I sat and thought that, I felt like my heart was breaking. It was a feeling that I wasn’t used to and I didn’t like it at all. I didn’t know what this Dominus had over me, but I sure as hell had no desire of doing anything that would hurt my family. Besides, I had been careful all day and I was sure that I wasn’t followed.
I was just as positive that Darien hadn’t lead anyone back here because if he had, I would be dead right now and so would all the others. He was way to too smart and paranoid for that. He was the kind of person that always paid attention to his surroundings. When he was working he was working and nothing else mattered. I am sure that was one of the reasons I cared so much about him. I wanted to meet his eyes so badly, I needed him to see me and I needed to show him that I really was OK and that I didn’t blame him for anything that had happened. Darien’s eyes never left Dr. Walker’s; I was really hoping that he wasn’t mad.
“Before the invasion occurred, there was a man named John Styron. Dr. Styron was a psychologist that claimed he had psychic powers. Not many people took this guy seriously, even though he helped the police on a few cases and his insights were always right. People thought that he was doing it for attention. I thought he was an honest man who gained nothing from his gift, so why would he make it up? The trouble and the grief placed upon him because he wanted to use his gift to help people would have been more than enough reason for a fake to drop the act and find a new scheme. This man however, pushed on despite the criticism. I read a lot of his work while I was in med school. I was fascinated with him and all the people that he helped. My obsession with him is the only reason that we are all here today. He wrote that a superior race would someday take this planet by force. He went into great detail about the 25 years of pain and suffering that the humans would endure. He said that the human race had never been face to face with such monsters and that contact with them would have devastating effects on the race in general. “
“The last prediction that he made before his death, which was exactly one week before the Vampires invaded, was somewhat vague compared to the other ones before it. It was about a child that would be born around the same time of the invasion. A child that would be human and blessed with a gift a thousand times more valuable than anyone has ever conceived of. He said the child would be able to walk among the intruders with great ease. This child would start a war between the monsters, but this war would be the child’s burden to bear and the child would eventually be faced with a decision that would change the world either for good or the bad.”
Dr. Walker stopped just as suddenly as he had begun. No one ever knew what the monsters Dr. Styron was talking about could possibly be. Some just assumed it was a play on words, attempting to predict another world war. Others ignored him completely and very few people took him seriously. We were arrogant as a race, born to think that we were untouchable, taught that we were the top of the food chain and nothing would ever change that, and anyone that spoke of a stronger being was written off as crazy and ignored completely.
“That is all there is. He never got to finish his prediction, or maybe the outcome wasn’t clear enough for him to see. No one knows; it is a secret that he took to the grave with him.”
When I was finally able to look away from Dr. Walker’s pale face I was shocked to see everyone’s eyes in the room glued on me. “What are you all looking at me like that for?” No one even blinked. It was like they were frozen in time. “Oh, come on; you can’t all be serious. That thing is not about me. It was just some crazy guy having nightmares about things that he knew no more about than any of the other humans.”
“You know, you really didn’t have to alter your appearance at all Cat. You have always looked like one of them, not to mention the fact that you never even had to learn mannerisms. You just do what they do; it is like second nature.” As the words flew out of Darien’s mouth he pointed to all my brothers and sisters. This little rant about me walking easily among the monsters upset me even more, because Darien was always on my side no matter what, and now he too was going to betray me because some loon had a dream about the end of the world. Maybe we weren’t as connected and as solid as I thought.
“Dr. Walker, you know this is ridiculous. That little prediction is no more about me than it is you, or anyone in this room for that matter. You are way too smart to believe in that kind of stuff anyway. Visions are not at all scientifically sound. Why do you waste your time on this? I messed up, I get it. I think figuring out if we are in danger because of my little mix up is more important than something some dead freak wrote, don’t you?”
“Well Catalina, I never said that I was a hundred percent convinced, nor did I say that I was positive that the Styron was real, but he saw something and he was right before. Not to mention the obvious fact that something happened to you. Something that was so powerful that it knocked you out cold and left the most revered Dominus scarred with a wound that resembled a cat’s claw slash.”
I felt the color drain out of my face; when he listed all the facts like that, it did seem more likely than I was comfortable with, but I would rather die than admit that to any of them.
“This is absurd and you all know it. The person that is supposed to turn the Vampire/Dominus reign upside down is not me. I am no different than the rest of you! All of you guys walk among them with ease. I mean, come on, are we so arrogant we think we are the only rogue humans running around? There were billions of people on the planet when they took over. It is highly unlikely that we are the only hope for mankind. I know you are all mad at me, but this is so not a fair punishment. Disown me, ignore me, tell me to get out, anything, just stop looking at me like I am some sort of savior.” There, that sounded convincing to me.
“Catalina, I promise you that there will be no jumping to conclusions. We will test this hypothesis before further actions are taken, and even if it turns out that you are the child that was dreamt about, I promise you we will all figure this out together and you will not have to do any of this alone. We have always been and we will always be a team.”
Dr. Walker sounded so nonchalant about this that I wanted to throw something at him. He could be the sweetest most caring man, the great father that use to star in the sitcoms of the past other times; but it was like he didn’t have a clue as far as people were concerned.

“No offense Doc, but I am not a science experiment or a lab rat. No one is testing anything on me.”

Awaken the Elements snippet!

This Sunday snippet shows my love of horror movies. Here is a snippet from Awaken the Elements coming soon. BTW don't forget the awesome key chain giveaway beneath this post!

Ivy Lee and Envy sat away from the others, writing poems. Envy stood up. “I think I’ve finished,” she said. Only Ivy Lee looked the least bit interested in her announcement.
Autumn noticed they weren’t paying attention to her and frowned. “Listen to me, dammit!” Three sets of eyes darted to her.
“Away from the sun, troubled by the moon,” Envy started to read her poem.
“Now listen. I was talking about Autumn’s Guide to Surviving Scary Movies, or actually, Surviving Halloween.” She continued to pace.
“Can’t sleep right, left, but maybe south,” Envy said a little louder.
“Number one.” Autumn held up her finger. “If someone offers you a million dollars to stay in a real haunted house, buy a lottery ticket. You’ll have a better chance.” Stefan chuckled as he tossed up his football.
“I can’t feel my hands. As I look at them they melt.” Drake listened respectfully to Envy.
“Number two.” Autumn went on. “Don’t read out loud from a demon book.”
“I see green men. No you can’t bite my ear.” Jaime was torn; both were entertaining enough.
“Number three. The worst things you can do are screech girlishly and throw your arms up over your face in front of anything evil. That’s the equivalent of offering them a turkey leg.”
“Melting world wishes you good night, while Bean dances happily across your eyes,” Envy said, staring at her sister, annoyed.
“Number four. If you hear any freaky sounds, leave.” Autumn stopped pacing and thought for a minute.
“I grow horns at night when I sleep and run around with a fork.” Envy used her sister’s pause and spoke louder.
“Number five. Don’t visit certain evil areas.  Elm Street, anywhere in Maine, avoid those in-breeders down in Texas who fancy chainsaws, and so on.”
“I plan on poking you till you pass out, or until my fork breaks,” Envy said, finishing and sat down. Ivy Lee clapped.

“Number six. When you drop a monster, never poke it to see if it’s dead. Usually it isn’t, and it’ll just pop up and eat you,” Autumn said, continuing since no one else was talking. “Number seven. If it's dead and lying still, kill it again. One can never be too sure about these things, and monsters are notorious ankle biters. Number eight. If your child starts doing odd things or speaking in another person’s voice, put the kid out of its misery. You’ll save yourself tons of grief in the long run. Number nine. Klatuu Barada Nicto. Learn it. Know it. Use it properly. And number ten. This is by far the easiest because we already know about it. It's all in their heads. It seems to be a universal truth that you can drop a zombie by scrambling their eggs for them. Become Little Bunny Foo Foo, and live.”

November is fandom month kick off with a giveaway!!

Happy November this month I am celebrating fandoms! What is fandom you ask? Urban Dictionary says its the community that surrounds a TV show/movie/book etc. Fanfiction writers, artists, poets, and cosplayers are all members of that fandom. Wikipedea fandom (consisting of fan [fanatic] plus the suffix -dom, as in kingdom, freedom, etc.) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices (a fandom); this is what differentiates "fannish" (fandom-affiliated) fans from those with only a casual interest.

Whatever your fandom this is the time with Ender's Game, Thor 2, Catching Fire, and more. What are you looking forward to this month or the next few months?

Well to kick off fandom month I am doing a fun giveaway. Three lucky winners are going to win 1 of the classic key chains shown from https://www.etsy.com/shop/TiffLissBoutique?page=1

Okay, so I'm supposed to tell you about me...

Seriously, if I wrote a book about myself it would take you ten minutes to read and you would be bored stiff after the first two! LOL

I'm a full-time writer, wife, and mother. Which basically means there's always a surplus of pencils lost somewhere in my hair, I usually have some place to be (I'm always late), I have a bad habit of calling family and friends random character's names (from my books), I talk to myself because no one else listens to me, and I can throw together a mean dinner for eight with only ten minutes notice and four ingredients in the pantry, LOL.

If you can't find me on the sidelines of my sons' football games, online, cooking, cleaning, shopping, at the local coffee joint or on the phone wandering aimlessly throughout my house then I've probably hidden myself in my "bat-cave" to write.

I have a positive attitude, and absolute fun-loving approach to life. That makes it easy for the voices in my head to take over on a regular basis providing endless hours of entertainment for my pleasure, and hopefully yours.

Random facts about me:~My favorite color is pink~I have a Bishon Frise puppy named Cullen Edward~My favorite music is hip-hop~I have a severe addiction to coffee. So much so, that those in my inner circle refuse to speak to me before caffeine O'clock! True StoryEnjoy the ride.
