Excerpt Chapter One
It was springtime in New York City; however, I didn’t see as many of the beautiful flowering blooms of Azalea shrubs or the pink and white blooms of the dogwood trees as I did growing up in Charlotte, N.C. The air back home had the sweet aroma of honeysuckles and jasmines, but I still could feel that it was springtime in the air as I briskly walked down the sidewalks of lower Manhattan. The air wasn’t all that fresh above ground, but it sure beat the smell of urine in the subway station.
I stopped at a bagel shop to grab my usual breakfast of bagel with cream cheese and a coffee. I’d become such a regular that Luiz, the store clerk, who worked behind the counter already knew my order. He tapped in the amount I owed on the cash register and then handed me a bag containing my breakfast with a big grin on his face.
“How are you today, Luiz?” I asked. I should trip him up one day and order something different, I thought.
“Good, good,” he said as another customer approached, interrupting him before he got a chance to say more. I looked back to wave, but his attention was focused on helping customers that were starting to flow into the shop.
New York City was unlike any city that I’d ever been to. Tall buildings invading the sky, cars jammed in traffic with drivers honking their horns, the smell of food coming from street vendors, street hustlers trying to lure pedestrians to either play card games or to buy something that they were selling and crowded sidewalks where everyone seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere or another. I’d moved there three years ago after my divorce from Michael.
As I sat at my desk going through my notes, preparing to go to the 23rd precinct in Harlem to interview detective Andre Moore, my boss, Ryan Blackman, poked his head inside my cubicle to see if I needed any help with the preparation to interview Detective Moore.
“Ms. Watkins, this is your first field assignment and I want to make sure that you are prepared for this interview, especially with the nature of the case. I want to make sure that you are able to handle the details,” he said as he tried to read my facial expression. “I can’t afford any fuck ups. I want to be the first to run this story and I need everything you can dig up on this one. I had to pull lots of strings to get you this interview. Don’t make me regret it,” he said firmly.

ISBN-13: 978-1499642780
About The Author
Michelle Stimpson is an author, a speaker, and an educator who received her Bachelor of Science degree from Jarvis Christian College in 1994. She earned a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2002. She has had the pleasure of teaching elementary, middle, and high school as well as training adults. In addition to her work in the field of education, Michelle ministers through writing and public speaking. Her works include the highly acclaimed Boaz Brown, Divas of Damascus Road (National Bestseller), and Falling Into Grace. She has published several short stories for high school students through her educational publishing company, Right Track Academic Support Services, at http://www.wegottaread.com. Michelle serves in women’s ministry at her home church, Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, in Dallas, TX. She regularly speaks at special events and writing workshops sponsored by churches, schools, book clubs and other positive organizations, and she has taught writing classes at the University of Texas at Arlington. Michelle lives near Dallas with her husband, their two teenage children, and one crazy dog.
LaShondra and her Boaz, Stelson, are living the ideal American lifestyle, except for the subtle and not-so-subtle ways society keeps reminding them that they aren’t the norm. She’s African-American, he’s Caucasian, and their oldest child is already tackling the question of identity. It’s bad enough when outsiders show their ignorance or disdain. But when the issues come from family, LaShondra finds herself wondering if Stelson can truly comprehend the challenges looming on the horizon.
When a church picnic leads to a head-on clash between LaShondra’s fears and Stelson’s optimism, the truth prevails. But that’s just the beginning.
LaShondra learns that the drama during the family outing was only a set-up for an even more rigorous spiritual battle to save her family. After turning her back to the pressures at work and yielding to Stelson’s leadership, LaShondra finds herself interceding for a husband she hardly even recognizes anymore.
Is this the beginning of the end for the couple that truly endeavored to honor God’s ways, or will this season fortify their marriage for His glory?
Excerpt
Hwuuuuu. Sheeeee. Hwuuuuu. Sheeee.
“Stelson. Turn over on your stomach.” I shoved my husband’s shoulder, attempting to wake him.
No response.
Hwuuuuu. Sheeeee. Hwuuuuu. Sheeee.
“Stelson. Roll over.” A little louder, a little stronger push this time.
The television illuminated his glare at me, displaying the kind of anger that only a Church of God in Christ usher gives a member chewing gum in the sanctuary. “What?”
I demanded, “Roll over. You’re snoring.”
“No, I’m not.”
“Yes, you are.”
“I’m not even sleep,” he protested.
“You think I woke you up so I could lie to you?”He crumpled up his face, flipped onto his stomach with a grumble and turned his head away. I didn’t care about him getting upset. He wasn’t the one who had to rise at 5:00 a.m. so he could work out, get himself dressed, and then get a 6 month old and a 4 year old up, fed, dressed and at the daycare before 7:15 a.m.—all the while hoping to make it to work by 7:45 a.m. To be fair, Stelson would have helped with the kids if I’d asked him. But why should I have to ask? Shouldn’t it be instinctive to think, “Wow, my wife is really busting her behind with the kids. Since I have a morning off, I should use it to help her.”?
Apparently this is not common sense.
Within seconds, my husband was at it again. Only this time it wasn’t so much the sound as the annoying vibration of the rattle in his throat and nose. How have wives slept through snoring husbands for centuries?

Everyday Uplifting You, by Val Newton Knowles Virtual Book Tour
Bestselling Author | Speaker
Val Newton Knowles was born in the beautiful island of Nassau, in the Bahamas. She is passionate about helping people. Val’s current Bestseller, “Everyday Uplifting you,” is now available. Val started writing daily nuggets to encourage an aunt who had been going through some challenges, the book was such a blessing, that she decided to make it available as an encouragement for others. Val seeks to uplift, motivate and encourage others to be the best they can and never allow failure to cause them to give up. Val first released No Shame Only Power, author Valderine Newton-Knowles offers practical steps to help you walk in the power of God, showing that from the beginning, you were born to win. The Apostle Paul spoke often of the power of God, and he spoke because of his personal experiences. Now it’s time to take your personal experiences and begin a daily diet on the word of God. It is the only thing that has the power to strengthen your spirit and accomplish that which seems impossible.
About The Book
Everyday Uplifting you, is a book filled with daily nuggets to jump-start your day. After watching an aunt broken due to the many obstacles she had been facing, Val decided to do something special for her and started writing nuggets for each day to show her aunt how much she is loved and remind her of the blessing that she is. The book is designed to bless, motivate, uplift and challenge you with powerful nuggets to empower you from the inside out. #EveryDayUpliftingYou Val, tell us about your book?
My book has recently become an Amazon Bestseller in two Categories first Christian Living & Devotionals and second Best Seller in Worship & Devotions. “Everyday Uplifting You: Daily Encouragement for Your Soul 365 Days of Any Year” is filled with daily nuggets to jumpstart your day. The nuggets are short but very powerful. How did you come up with idea for this book? I was actually writing another book when this book came about. I have at least 17 aunts, who are all very dear to me, but as in most families there are some who stand out for different reasons, maybe they are the strong one, or the one who always has the ability to get things done. For me there are 3 aunts that have always been strong Christians who played a huge role in my life. One of them went on to be with the Lord. One of my aunts went through a series of challenges; she had several strokes, her husband went home to be with the Lord and she fell in the yard requiring emergency surgery. I’ve seen her sad, I’ve seen her cry, but on this particular visit, I saw her broken and it tore at me and I wanted to do something, anything to help her understand how much she was loved and valued. It was right there in her bedroom that I got the idea to write motivational quotes for everyday and it was there, that the design started to fall into place.
What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?
With this particular book I honestly can’t say there was a difficult part with this writing. It was a labor of love for me.
Why do you write?
I have a genuine love for people. Writing helps me to send that love out to the masses. In my writing, I hope that readers will see and feel the genuine love and care that I seek to express. I use the avenue of writing to express what is in my heart to be a blessing to people all over the world. If I can help to inspire, uplift and motivate others with this gift that He has given me while pointing them to Christ then that is a blessing for me.
What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
We can all use encouraging words sometimes and we are never alone even if it seems like it.
A lot of the daily motivation is this book is designed to help us keep going. It’s written in a way that the reader will know that I am right there walking with them through each day. But most importantly, our heavenly Father is also there each step of the way with us, hence you will see the phrase, Together we can and we will.”
Who are your favorite authors? Sheldon Newton – Yes he’s my brother, but a great writer and one who lives what he teaches. Dr. Myles Munroe, Dr. Creflo Dollar, Jim Rohn, Vincent Norman Peele, John C. Maxwell (I have many favorites)
What book(s) are you reading now?
“The Holy Spirit, your financial advisor” by Dr. Dollar and “Winning with people,” by John C Maxwell. What books have most influenced your life? I have to say it was and is the Bible. It continues to be the biggest influence in my life.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I consider my brother, Bishop Sheldon Newton a mentor, and also Dr. Creflo Dollar. Any advice to give to aspiring writers?
If you are confident this is what you are called to do, never quit! Keep writing; keep getting the message out there. Join writing groups who can help you along the way.

Cassandra Whitmore is facing yet another Valentine’s Day alone. Her love life is as dry as the Sharpie pen she uses to mark an even more dreadful day on her calendar—her upcoming 30th birthday. Driven by the maddening ticking of her biological clock, Cassandra is determined to meet, fall in love with, and marry “The One” within nine months. When Cassandra accompanies her cousin to a night club, her Type-A quest to meet a man is quickly rewarded by a stranger’s velvety, baritone voice asking if he might occupy the seat next to her. He’s Nicolas Harte, whose good looks leave Cassandra speechless, but not for long. After mustering enough courage to strike up a conversation, she learns Nicolas is everything she wants in a man—smart, successful, and available. There’s only one catch: He’s “GU” (geographically undesirable). Nonetheless, Cassandra falls in love with Nicolas and makes the uncharacteristic decision to move from Los Angeles to New York to be with him. But Cassandra gets a rude awakening when she discovers there’s something rotten in the Big Apple.
Excerpt
Chapter 1
I’m staring at the calendar stuck to my fridge, wondering where the time went. It wasn’t that long ago that I was braving long lines and rowdy crowds in the quest for the ultimate Christmas gift. Now it’s February, and I’m looking at a photo of red roses. In four days, millions of women will receive cards, flowers, candy, jewelry—and the super-lucky ones, the almighty engagement ring. As for me, I’ll spend the day lying to myself. A lot. I’ll tell myself, “It’s just another day, it’s all about the money, I’m not letting someone dictate who I should love and when.” And my favorite,“It’s a day for fools.”If you haven’t already surmised, I’m dreading Valentine’s Day.
When I graduated from college, my eight-year plan looked like this:
1) Find the perfect man, get happily married (So far, no such luck).
2) Have at least two rug rats (Likewise, considering the miserable failure of item 1).
I remove the cap from the black Sharpie I’m holding in my death grip and place a large X on today’s date—Saturday, February 10th. I scan the previous forty X marks and replace the cap on the pen; I don’t want it to dry up like my love life. I have nine months before I turn the big three-oh, and I’m determined, by any means necessary, to be married before November 10th.
“Cass, what are you doing?”
My cousin’s high-pitched voice startles me. I tense hearing the sound of her footfalls along the hardwood floor as she makes her way from the living room to the kitchen. I take a moment and calmly say, “Nothing.”
She shakes her head, swishing her dreadlocks then snatches the Sharpie out of my hand. “You and that calendar. I don’t know why you put so much pressure on yourself. Why plan everything? Just let it happen.”
Yeah, that’s good advice. She just let it happen, and now she’s desperate to get out of a marriage to a guy with serious weight issues. It’s not entirely her fault. David is what she calls a “closet fatty.” When he and Cyn met he’d lost one hundred pounds. He managed to keep all his “before” photos out of sight until after the shotgun wedding. During the pregnancy they both gained a ton of weight. David got so big that he lost all interest in going out, having sex, and bathing—not necessarily in that order. On the upside, he’s a good guy and a great dad.
I take the Sharpie from her and toss it onto the island in my recently remodeled kitchen. “I am going to let it happen.”
About The Author
Shortly after graduating from USC with a degree in journalism, Alretha soon realized her interest in her major was not heartfelt. Instead of writing news stories, she wanted to write plays and books. Several years later, her church gave her an outlet to fulfill her writing desires through their Liturgical Fine Arts Department wherein Alretha penned twelve theatre pieces—the community response was overwhelming. This led to plays outside of the church, including Alretha’s “One, Woman Two Lives,” starring Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show), directed by four-time NAACP Image Award Best Director recipient, Denise Dowse. The production garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences. In between plays, Alretha’s first novel, “Daughter Denied,” was launched in 2008 and in 2011, Alretha launched “Dancing Her Dreams Away.” Her third novel, “Married in the Nick of Nine,” spawned a four-book series that has been acquired by Soul Mate Publishing. “Married in the Nick of Nine,” the first book in the series was released July 2, 2014.

The Wounded Warrior Virtual Book Tour by Elder Desireé Harris-Bonner #NEWRELEASE
About The Author
Bestselling Author | Speaker | Psalmist | Coach | Minister
Desireé Harris-Bonner, Anointed, Expressive, Energetic and Spirit-filled! Saved by God’s Grace in 1990 and then Sanctified by His Holy Spirit, she endeavors to sing & write songs of worship and praise focused on God and Him glorified.
Throughout her spiritual journey, Desireé has functioned as a Choir Director, Worship Leader, Deaconess and Pastor of Music. She is a formally trained Vocalist and Percussionist.
Under the Pastoral leadership of Rev. Marion and Dr. BJ Relefourd of Vision of Life Ministries, in Lawrenceville, GA where she has received her ordination as an Elder, Desireé serves on the Ministerial Staff.
Desireé has released two Sacred Music CD’s; “The Psalmist… Volume One” and “The Psalmist… Volume Two” and is currently working on the Third Volume! Her first Bestselling Book entitled “The Heart of the Psalmist” was published in November of 2012 and soon to be released July 2014 her second Book, “To the Wounded Warrior” while contributing to the Anthology: Organized Obstacles with her story entitled “Unfinished: The Diary of a Psalmist”.
Desireé, tell us about your book?
To the Wounded Warrior was born out of my heart for the purpose of being read as a healing guidebook for those who have been in abusive situations, especially within the Church and weren’t able to talk about it or be heard.
As a Personal Growth & Development Coach, key aspects of spiritual and emotional healing are always present in consultations and client sessions, so I’ve gathered them together in this Book.
How did you come up with idea for this book?
This Book originated from a series of unrelated Blogs that I’ve written over the years which the Lord instructed me to compile into one place.
What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?
The most difficult aspect of writing this Book was my having to be mindful of my own personal experience with the subject matter, throughout the compilation and editing process. Although I am healed and whole from my past situation, the emotions and memories had to be kept in check, so that they didn’t spew out in my writing and corrupt the message.
Why do you write?
Because I must! If I don’t write, the words and thoughts just stay jumbled up in my head and then it gets really crowded in there…
Who are your favorite authors?
Although I do not major in fictional writing, I absolutely love African-American fiction. Some of my favorite authors are:
- Zora Neale Hurston
- Toni Morrison
- Alice Walker
- Brandon Massey
- Langston Hughes
- Pearl Cleage
- Walter Mosley
- Ernest Gaines
- Octavia Butler
- Suzan-Lori Parks
What books have most influenced your life?
Beyond the Bible, the books that have most influenced my life are Fairy Tales (Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Anderson, etc), the Classics (J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, John Bunyan, Hannah Hurnard, Harper Lee) and books by Dr. Suess.
I love the creative ways of telling a story; of sharing a message or truth.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
The writer that I would consider a mentor would be Maya Angelou, because she not only wrote the words, she lived them and taught the life lessons that she experienced and learned to so many others.
What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
That in God and His Word there is an answer for every concern… There really is!
Any advice to give to aspiring writers?
My best suggestion to an aspiring writer is write what excites you. Write what you’re passionate about. And, write what you know about. You’re creating with words… Create something that you can read back to yourself and say “Now that’s good!”
About The Book
To the Wounded Warrior: If you’ve ever been blindsided by having your mistakes, weaknesses, or failings aired across the pulpit, or been called into the “Principal’s Office” to be dressed down because you said ‘No’ to a request made by someone in Leadership.
If you’ve ever had Leadership enlist your assistance for ministry purposes, but instead used you to satisfy their own personal agenda (physical, financial or emotional).
If you’ve ever had Ministry opportunities presented to you from others outside of your church home and were told that you cannot accept them because you’re needed in the House.
If you’ve ever had so much fear that you wouldn’t dare visit another church because this was on the same level as committing Sin; to be told repeatedly, that if you ever left that Ministry, you’ve backslidden, so you stay!
I can testify to you that you can be healed AND made whole. But, you’re going to have to take responsibility for making the journey from Victim to Victor. No longer walking wounded, but truly walking in the Freedom of His Spirit and abundant Life.
Like Jesus said to the man at the Pool of Bethesda:
“Do you want to be made whole? Rise, take up your bed and walk.” ~John 5:6;8
Are you ready? Let’s Go…

Love Lifted Me Blog Tour by Author/Playwright Vanessa Richardson
Detective Eric Miller was convinced true love was not for him, his failed relationships, led him to believe so.
