New Zealand Road Cyclist Magazine

Picture(issue 31)

John McKenzie (editor)

Chris Gaskell (publisher)

[magazine]

Umm I enjoyed this learnt some stuff. I particularly enjoyed reading about people and their cycling and somewhat laboured through the gear reviews. Being a tour cyclist I was searching for something about mapping or pannier packing; this is clearly the wrong magazine for such information.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

PictureColour Illustrated, Formatted for E-Readers

Harriet Beecher Stowe

HMDS printing press

[kindle ebook]

Fantastic bravely written book. The story set around the early 1850's USA, is based on the lives of slaves and specifically three runaways. In short it is one long fascinating intellectual argument against slavery. The story is beautifully written with many wonderful lovely characters and a sometimes gripping plot. I highly recommend this book.

As far as the illustrations go; I have a kindle eReader that cannot show colour pictures. The picture we in black and white and far to small to really see. Harriet Beecher Stowe's writing is good enough to not need illustrations

Tooth and Nail

PictureIan Rankin

St Martin's Press

[kindle ebook]

It has been a month or so since I read this mostly London base Rebus novel. I read it while travelling and it kept me glued enough to happily while down the hours. This book was definitely up to Rankin's usual standard.

The Triumph Of The Spider Monkey

PictureJoyce Carol Oates

Black Sparrow Press

This book was both a bleak and beautiful jaunt through the deranged mind of a psychopath serial killer. I didn't enjoy it.

The story is beautifully crafted and well worth the read.

I recommend this to anyone not who is not afraid to read a good book.

Black Swan

[Borrowed paperback]

I really enjoyed this read about the lead-up to the Remembrance Day of 1920.

The story was very well written, kept me turning the pages and left me pondering the characters well after I had finished the book.

For me, some of the words were a little clunky and sometimes the book felt like a writing school project.

Overall it was a very good book and I will most probably read her next book.

[Paper fold (won on Facebook)]

A beautiful and slightly odd sequence of poems in the voice of an allegedly normal young woman.

I really enjoyed this, I never quite new what I was reading, but that is what charmed me. Images of the letters have played on my mind during the week. I totally love the illustrated cat and meteorite on the 'B side' of the fold.

Biking Across America:

PictureMy Coast-To-Coast Adventure and the People I Met Along the Way

Paul V. Stutzman

Revell

[Kindle eBook]

A surprisingly good cycling book. Paul doesn't really speak that much about tour-cycling. He stayed in hotels, ate in restaurants, his bike seemingly didn't breakdown and the rain appears not to fall on him. He spoke a lot about people, a lot about God and well a lot about God.

The book was very well written with good, simple and clean English. The story was also extremely well edited and presented. Well done Vicki Crumpton and Revell Books.

It was a good read and I would recommend it.
