2017: Goals, Dreams, Resolutions & Evolution

Happy New Year. Mindful that you may be thinking, planning and preparing for the year ahead I thought I’d post this inspiring and practical video on goals, dreams, New Years Resolutions – and life beyond goals.

It will help you wether its the case that you’re setting goals and resolutions for the year ahead or indeed if you’re just keen to enjoy more peace, balance and fulfilment. I start by exploring creating space and ensuring you’re rested and relaxed. I then go on to share tips on setting goals that are 1) Strategic 2) Holistic 3) Specific, steps & supportive. I then explore the space beyond goals, uncertainty and the importance of inner peace, mindfulness, gratitude and acceptance.

We will pick up on all this in my Jan 2017 issue of Catch the Coach!

Tip for the Month – Reflection

“There’s little growth and progression without mindful learning and reflection” – Rasheed Ogunlaru

In this super-fast world we live in sometimes we are so busy rushing we don’t take the time to stop pause, rest and reflect. That’s also reflected in this time of the year were often so busy rushing to sort out the gifts, get everything done, get work sorted, rushing around at parties and events etc that we don’t take time to reflect and take the juice out of the year. And this is a year of years where there is a lot that’s happened and a lot to learn.

Clear the decks, plan ahead and rest

At this time of year it can feel as though there’s lots to cram in so let’s just simplify it.

Clear the decks: identify what’s essential to clear and sort and home and work and go about it in a strategic, systemized and straightforward way and a calm pace

Plan ahead: We’re into winter so what do you need to stock, store, sort out and prepare for the months ahead personally, financially at home and professionally?

Rest: Perhaps like many it’s been quite a full on year. Beware overloading your dairy over the Christmas run up and holidays. Ensure you take the time you need rest, relax and re-charge.

Fact & Fiction…

Funny what they say about facts and fiction.

The facts for me are that the first thing I ever wanted to be was an author of fiction novels.  Then as a matter or fact I was lucky to have a best-selling author, Peter Tonkin as my English teacher at school.

I’ll also never forget the fact that he said – in front of the whole class – that I needed to work on my grammar if I wanted to be an author.  It was tough to hear but a powerful acknowledgement of what I wanted to be. As the facts turned out I never quite mastered my grammar but I had learned a powerful lesson about self belief and putting the work in.

My entire career has revolved around words and communication: media, singing/songwriting, coaching and motivational speaking.

But strangely, it was only when I wrote my third book Soul Trader that I remember that being an author was my first dream as a kid from the age of 10-11. On that realisation I tracked down Mr Tonkin and thanked him for his wise words. He told me he always thought I’d achieve something of my dreams. That email was one of the most touching things I’ve read.

Peter just emailed me a link to his new book pictured here. Funnily enough I’ve not read fiction books since I was at school. But a while back I wondered if I might one day write a personal development fable. Perhaps if I do it might inspire like I was back then.

Thank you Mr Tonkin and good luck with your new book The Ides which is available for pre-order on Amazon now

Motivation & Inspiration

“There are two powerful fuels, two forces; motivation and inspiration. To be motivated you need to know what your motives are. Over time – and to sustain you through it – your motivation must become an inner energy; a ‘motor’ driving you forward, passionately, purposefully, wisely and compassionately… come what may, every day. Inspiration is an outer – worldly – energy that you breathe and draw in. It may come from many places, faces, spaces and stages – right across the ages. It is where nature, spirit, science, mind and time meet, dance, play and speak. It keeps you outward facing and life embracing. But you must be open-minded and open-hearted to first let it in and then let it out again. Together – blended, combined and re-entwined – motivation and inspiration bring connectivity, productivity, creativity and boundless possibilities that is not just ‘self’ serving but enriching to all humanity and societies…just as it should be.”  – Rasheed Ogunlaru, Coach – Speaker – Author

Magical imperfection

“It does not need to be perfect – or technically correct – to be magic”  Rasheed Ogunlaru

Sometimes in the strive for perfection we miss out on it being real, honest, authentic. It can be true of our own growth and the things we turn our hands too.

Of course its important to do things well and to a high standard, but putting on my hat of being a artist – a singer and a writer – I know that all I have is my authenticity and to honour the song or the story i am telling. It’s this way you connect directly from and to the heart. And ALL of my best work has come through that way. Yes I need to be technically and qualitatively mindful but the energy, feeling, connection, expression , intention and honesty is key.

Not long ago I was in the recording studio writing recording a song that emerged partly in tribute to a colleague who has recently passed. As I recorded it with my producer / arranger the whole thing came together organically through our authentic diligence, presence, ability, creativity and intention. I recorded the lead vocal and then the backgrounds.  After recording the lead I heard myself announce that that was the only take I would record. Because I – at last – was present in every phase. The emotion sang the song. Could it be sung better technically, yes. Could I be more authentic, no, that was that moment. It’s the only time I can recall singing just one take.

As a coach and author both my ‘Become who you are’ talk and my book ‘The Gift of Inner Success’ were recorded as one take – one stream of consciousness. My technical logical self could not create anything even close in content and impact. Likewise when it came to writing Soul Trader I felt that “I” could not write it but that creativity could. When I say “I” I mean purely the logical, conditioned me alone. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that that part of me could write a technically good book but not a great, honest, authentic one. And so I used the same starting point:  I recorded it and then I worked from there. But my focus was always on it being authentic, true and real rather than anything else. My take on these things is always ‘is it true to me, does it feel and ring true’ then I am happy with it.

Of course it does depend what you are doing but even where great technical precision is required from building a structure to being a doctor it’s essential that care, kindness, presence are there present. I coach so many people in business who feel they need to leave their heart, their self, their magic and purpose at the door. Not at all. It is your heart that will call people to your work – if you let it.

10 Essential Reasons to Get Networking

Every major opportunity that has happened to me in my life, career and business has come through networking, conversations and introductions. In the world we live in effective networking can fast track your career or business – or your failure to do it well or at all can leave you struggling in the sidelines. I’ve gained friends, contacts, business, profits and profile through it.

Whether you’re at a point where you’re wanting step up in your career -or change it – or whether it’s the case that you’re your own boss and are looking to gain clients, contacts and profits, effective networking can be the difference between those who really flourish and the also rans.

As a coach, motivational speaker and author it is essential for my business. It is something that is so dear to my heart that  I now teach emerging and established professionals and entrepreneurs  how to flourish through it at my monthly Networking for Success event at the British Library Business & IP Centre

Here are 10 reasons why you should get networking and how you can benefit.

Connections– gain great contacts across countless fields – for mutual benefit
Relations– build new friendships, partnerships and possibilities
Elevation – gain business, clients, sales or career opportunities
Inspiration–often events great have speakers who can motivate and inspire
Isolation – meet others to share, support, advance and stop you getting stuck
Introductions – direct introductions to those you might otherwise never meet or be able to access
Direction – it can guide, direct, signpost you and help you progress you in life / career / business
Information – many events provide info advice as might the delegates you meet
Education--many events can boost your knowledge, skills and abilities
Celebration –Events can help you unwind, have fun, celebrate.

There are many myths around networking and many people have picked up bad habits giving it a bit of a bad reputation. But networking – relationship building for mutual benefit – makes our personal, working and business world go around. Great networking happens when you’re strategic, authentic and where you allow chance and serendipity to kick in.

It’s shrewd to network in a range of places: conferences, seminars, exhibitions, socially, in the workplace – through to simply catching up with friends and family. There is both a skill and an art to it – but key to it is being yourself, never being selfish and looking for mutual benefit.

Join me at Networking for Success and learn how to network strategically, skillfully, naturally and nerve free. It will help you to explore how and where to network and how to leverage, build and utilize your existing network so that every-one wins. See dates / BOOK NOW.
