The key to putting on a great event

Over the coming weeks a lot of my focus will be on preparing for the launch of my new book Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into your business.   And as you may well know if you’ve ever been involved on putting on a great event, there are a huge range of logistics: finding the venue; inviting  guests and managing replies; ensuring the food, drink and entertainment is great and lots and lots besides.

Mindful that running events is something that many of you need to do in your business and organisation, I asked Meredith O’Shaugnessy of Meredith Bespoke events agency who is helping mastermind an event for me for her insights on what makes a great event. Meredith started her career working in the London club scene and ended up managing some of London’s most prestigious venues. Today through her agency she works with big brands from Lamborghini to Elite Models.

Managing your money – Soul Trader interviews

Managing the money and finance side of things as a sole trader, small business owner or freelancer can be one of the most challenging and rewarding things. While understanding and managing the money side of things is a skills that many business owners have – often from a previous career – it is far from something that everyone has. There are also a number of factors that need to be considered from understanding your costs, setting your prices right, ensuring you can actually make enough profit on your goods / services once you’ve allowed for your costs, ensuring you understand and address tax, VAT, salary, bookeeping and accounting issues  – and perhaps most essential to your survival; ensuring that you actually have the cash flow to survive as a business and personally. I certainly didn’t really know any of these things when I started and like many business owners have learned as I have developed in my business.

Mindful that these can be challenging issues I caught up with one of my fave contacts to discuss it. Heather Darnell is a business finance specialist with a background in corporate finance. She worked as a finance director and operations director – in the USA, Canada and the UK – before setting up her own business Back Office Support Solutions to help businesses with all things to do with money. I’ve known Heather for several years and she’s one of my colleagues at Zestworks. So I asked her to run through some of the key things to consider.

Heather is one of the experts and business owners featured in my new book Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business (pub 3 Oct 2012)

Part 1: Managing your money

Part 2: Heather’s story…how she built her business

A message for teachers, leaders and healers

“In order for the healing in the world to take place, the healers must take their place …but first the healers must do their healing.”

Many different types of people come through the door of my coaching work. There are those on a spiritual journey. There are those who are keen to walk a new path in their career. There are those who are following their business dreams. There are managers, mums, directors, dads, artists and athletes…but many – perhaps even most – are teachers, leaders and healers.  Perhaps you too are a teaacher, leader or a healer. Some of these people are obviously so: they run an organisation or a charity. Some of them less obviously so – perhaps they are a creative writer. But it is something that I have observed that most people who ask me to coach them are on a journey to be themselves and to do their work in the world.

Yesterday was a good example. A charming young lady who is working and who runs a business in the background. She is a parent and has a number of goals. As we spoke it became clear that she has already been on quite a journey and has achieved much to be where she is.  I told her to give herself credit on who she already is. And as we spoke she realised that whilst she had presented the goals she wants to pursue there was a deeper calling in her. As we uncovered this the clarity, energy, drive and simplicity to pursue her goals started to come through.  If this resonates with you you may find this short video useful.

In short my message is an invitation; an invitation for you to be you and to be you in the world. My invitation is for you to allow yourself to do the work that you have been fashioned to do. Do not edit yourself. Be in the world. Do your thing. Sing your song. Spot those who are like minded and who have a similar calling in their hearts. Put one foot in front of the other and walk your path.

Rasheed interviews Dame Tanni Grey Thompson

Perhaps like yourself I’ve been energised and inspired by the London Olympics and Paralympics. I love the attitude and approach that athletes and sports people have and apply to their lives and their craft.

Over the years I’ve interviewed many wonderful people and among those interviews one of the people I was most impressed by was Dame Tanni Grey Thompson. I was impressed by her warmth, her naturalness, her humility and empathy. The moment to arrived in the room I felt at easy. It’s quite funny, so every day was she that I didn’t even notice her arrive. I turned around and suddenly she was there.

When someone has that kind of humility and is so personable and everyday it makes their own contribution and accomplishments all the more extraordinary. Anyway here is that interview which I filmed several years ago during filming my pilot TV show The Rasheed  Show, be the change, see the change. This is the short version of the inteview and at some point I’ll have to revisit my original footage to see if we have the full interview.

Here’s what I have in store for your life

I’m mindful that many of you enjoy inspiring  books, e-book, motivational talks, downloads and videos to help you relax, unwind or develop yourself, your career and your relationships. So I thought I’d just stop by and tell you a little bit about whats in Rasheed’s store and to pick out a few of my faves.

If you’re generally looking at where you are and where you’re going I’d very much recommend From Head to Heart, Finding Your Path. This will help you to get that balance between being true to yourself and setting and pursuing your life and career goals. It may be especially valuable if you don’t know what you want to do next.

If you’re on a journey of self discovery – or if you have a really busy mind and life – then I highly recommend the Become who you are audio talk. This is a soothing, semi-meditative talk. It’s great if your stressed, overworked and overwhelmed. But it’s also great if your on that journey to simplify your life, be true to yourself in life and keen to find your centre.

Space, Stillness, Silence picks up form Become who you are in many ways and will help you bring more of that peace and silence into your every day life and career. Like Become who you are it is one of the products that I created that is most dear to my heart. The great thing about these audio talks is that you can listen to them again and again and most cost £6.99 or £7.99 which is an amazing price for arriving at peace of mind!

If you’re looking for something more practical, if you like working with video, if you want to coach yourself, if you want something that is far more of a self/ personal and career development programme, then the Become Who You Are – Coach Yourself Video will be ideal for you. It helps you simplify your life, identify your skills/passions and talents, it then helps you identify your goals and how to progress them step by step. It also has practical career tips and includes tips on developing richer relationships. But it also helps you stay balanced and centered. There will be ups, downs and challenges throughout life and this video helps you develop a healthy relationship with life which means that you will be best placed to get the richness out of it, come what may. Before training as a coach I would be more likely to buy a product to coach myself than to see a coach. If you are a self starter and feel the same then this is for you. It’s a video downloads and cost just under £50 which is much less than the cost of a single coaching session.  At the same time through the video I guide you step by step – and it can be good to return to, revisit and chart your progress.  This is a nice little treat to self. It takes a while to download so I’d recommend getting on with something else whilst it’s downloading to your desktop.

Wanna get a taste of the video? check out the promo video below..

There are handful of other books and downloads two including ones for business. Check out the store for details and to download whatever resonates with you. Enjoy.

So after interviewing him about his book, he interviewed me, my story and the book and it’s 7 themes to help you flourish  through: clarity, customers, courage, co-operations, conversations, creativity and compassion.

This interview may be especially useful if you are thinking about, starting out or growing a business – that includes sole traders, freelancers, experts, freelancers and small business owners.

Re-set your mind: Rasheed interviews Karen Moxom

I meet all sorts of wonderful people on my travels as a coach and I am very passionate about those in life who are teachers, healers – and those on a journey to help others. One such person is Karen Moxom. Karen was going about her own business; running an accountancy and she went on a NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) course – which is all about understanding and utilising  mindset, behaviour and language -  to help her personally and those she was training through her accountancy work.

During her training a big dream emerged, and that together with a series of events  led her to head up the Association for  Neuro-Linguistic Programming which aims to help the public and professionals. Mindful of how passionate she is about her work and extending NLP to new audiences, I caught up with her and interviewed her.

Motivational & inspirational talks

Are you feeling inspired and motivated in your life, in your work and or in your business? is your team or department engaged, energized? Do you and they even feel involved and empowered?

I’m often asked to run motivational and inspirational talks at events, conferences, shows, exhibitions and at organisational staff and management away-days and strategy events. Over the coming months in  particular I’m asked to speak as organisations set back to work and during Black History Month in October and during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November.

Motivation, inspiration, focus and clarity are words that come up all the time when I give my talks. And across the board there is a challenge with people really feeling at their best, positive and performing to the peak of their potential. There are some simple things that you can do and that starts with stepping back, understanding your staff, your situation, your values, your motivations. Once you know what your magic, your values, your vision and your gifts then magic is really possible as you, your staff, your teams, your managers and your organisation becomes truly aligned.  If this chimes with you, or if you are looking for a speaker for your event, conference, team away day, celebration then drop me a line.

Are you a champion?

The London 2012 Olympic Games drew to a close last night. The tagline ‘inspire a generation’ was coined in the hope that it would inspire the emerging generation of young people and young athletes. But of course an Olympic Games with its power to bring the nations of the world together in friendly competition has the power to reach across generations. And the extraordinary accomplishments, dedication, adversity, challenges, confidence and mindset required to succeed is a metaphor for what is required to flourish in all walks of life.

Yesterday I decided to soak up the atmosphere and pop by the route of the men’s  Marathon -one of the last events – which took place in central London. Here are my two 2 min videos I hope you enjoy them. More importantly I hope you take the opportunity to reflect, celebrate, refocus and look at the areas in life where you wish to excel, progress, pursue your goals and give of you best. Where are you at personally? Are you in your ideal event? Do you have the team necessary to succeed? Are you pushing yourself enough? Do you put in the time and the training? Do you perform 100% Do you have the self belief? Do you take time out to celebrate?

Part 1: inspiration

Part 2: legacy & unity
