Spring Clean Your Life: free online seminar / talk – 7pm 19 Mar

Join me over at Evolved Heart.com at 7pm UK time (2pm Eastern Standard time) on Tues 19 March for our ‘Spring Clean Your Life’ special free live chat / seminar.

As winter turns to spring, this is the time of the year that we tend to associate with re-newal, new possibilities, new life and making changes. In nature it’s evident as the days get lighter and warmer  - and as leaves and flowers start to appear. You may then start to notice more wildlife re-emerging.

We humans too are part of nature  - though we sometimes forget it – and this time of year is a time we tend to focus on making changes, spring cleaning the house, doing Do-It-Yourself work around the house. Often we see ‘spring cleaning’ as a superficial thing but it can be an opportunity to really opening up to life, simplifying life and creating new possibilities – and in some cases making some major ‘root and branch’ changes.

The session will help and encourage  you to:

1) Take stock of where you are

2) Have a thorough clear out at home and work

3) Simplify, systemise and become more effective and focused

4) Evaluate what skills, resources you have and might need from now.

5) Explore what relationships need to let go of, improved or sought out.

To take part:

1. Book mark this page on Evolved Heart

2.  Tune in here at 7pm Uk time (2pm EST) on Tuesday 19 March

3. Email any advance questions or points to admin @ evolved heart.com mark your questions ‘Spring Clean Your Life  – Live Chat’.

As always Rasheed Ogunlaru from Evolved Heart will be delivering the talk and Tum, Co-founder of Evolved Heart will be on the controls, introducing the seminar and feeding through your questions – and questioning/quizzing Rasheed.

We look forward to you joining us then.

What’s golf got to do with it?

A year or two ago I was coaching an entrepreneur who was also a keen golfer. As I coached him about his life and business I was struck by the parallels between his personal and professional success and performance and golf.

As with all sports there’s a huge amount we can learn from athletes and sports stars – and from sport in general that is relevant and can provide insight into our careers and our businesses: application, dedication, confidence, support and mindset are all qualities that are essential for sporting success and also for personal and professional progress in any field.

As a coach it’s also a pleasure when people with sporting backgrounds ask me to coach them. Because we can really get to work on achieving peak performance. One of my current clients has a footballing background and it’s always interesting to draw links between his sporting expertise and where he is now in his new business that has a link to sport.

So it was a pleasure when Tom Whiting of Golf Juice TV asked me to do an interview for his online channel. Tom is himself a talented young golfer who left the UK in his teens on a golf scholarship. He found the pressures and expectations of pursuing a golfing career was a real mixed experience and discovered that while golf was very dear to him so were other things. On his return to the UK he set up Golf Juice to help other young golfers in particular with all aspects of their game and life on and off the course.

So as you can imagine we had lots to talk about  including issues of life balance, confidence, getting the right support, the huge pressures that can surround you if you are pursuing a sporting life and much, much more.

If you’re involved in golf or an enthusiast in any area of sport – or if you’re an entertainer / performer – you’re likely to get quite a lot out of this.

John himself is an example of a young person who is taking charge of his own future and an interest in business and enterprise – and utilising the available technology to start running his own business.

I hope you enjoy the interview.

Face the future – spotting business trends

Being on the pulse of what’s going on in your industry and more widely is really important if you are starting or growing any business.  Overlooking what’s going on or not being aware of what’s going on around the corner can actually dash your business hopes. This is something that can affect start-ups and  sole traders right through to big businesses. Advances in technology, innovation in and around your market place and changing customer needs and habits are all significant factors in the success of your business. In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven market place it’s perhaps more relevant than ever.

Last week I caught up with Cate Trotter, founder of Insider Trends who is a ‘trend- spotter’ who helps businesses to spot, understand and make simple and profoun changes to their business to give them the best advantage to succeed. Like myself Cate and her business Insider Trends are one of the partners of the British Library’s Business and Intellectual Property Centre, and like myself runs workshops their for new and established business owners. So I caught up with her at the end of one of those sessions to quiz her about her work and understanding business trends.

All for the love of music

Following on from my last blog about the psychology and impact of music on our lives, I thought you might enjoy this chat I recorded a few months ago with John Hamilton who has spent his whole life in and around music.

John is the owner of EQ Studios in London and helps produce songs for all sorts of singers, musicians and spoken word artists -including myself. He was first signed with a group to EMI records in the 1970s and enjoyed Top Ten Success in the 1990s on a track called Tell Me Ma. A life-long music enthusiast I thought he’s be a great person to chat to about music.

If you’re a creative or making your way as an artist you may get quite a lot from what John has to say.

The healing power of music

There’s something magical about music that seems to make it so important in so many of our lives. It’s seems to affect us deeply as listeners and those of us who create music. Be it for relaxation,  release, expression, celebration, or as an accompanying friend it has a very special place in our lives.

While we are drawn to different genres of music: pop, rock, classical, folk, world, rap, soul, R&B, jazz, country…and a whole host of indigenous and native music, the impact is universal or so it seems.  It’s something that I find interesting as a listener and as someone who spent a large portion of life singing and performing.

So I recently chatted with David Greenberg who is a musician and a Cambridge University PHD student who is specifically studying music psychology and it’s impact on our lives , society and it’s healing qualities. Here’s our discussion.

Rasheed meets the founders of new social media site PhinkIt

Last week I caught up with Simon Jack and Martin Lucas, the founders of the new ‘business with personality’ social media website, Phinkit.   As the name suggests the website is all about allowing people to express themselves their way….and perhaps also to expand their  thinking and creativity.

I first met the Phinkit  guys a few months ago at a talk about traditional media that I was giving to entrepreneurs at the British Library’s London Business Village exhibition.  I liked the fact that they were genuinely passionate about providing a platform to help people connect, voice their interests, promote their skills / services in a way that the users wishes to use the platform. The short video interview above shares what they had to say about the ethos and journey behind creating the site.

Business from the heart heart – Rasheed speaks at Kingston Business School

The world -and business world has changed. More and more people that I  meet want to be their own boss and the changing nature of work means that there is very little by the way of a job for life.

But that’s not all even if we want to run, work for or buy from businesses and organisations that care for their staff, customers and the wider community and environment, not just profits.

Here’s a talk I gave a few months ago to a room of budding entrepreneurs at Kingston Business School. Based on my book Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business, I share the books 7 heart centred principles for building a business you and customers love:

Co-operation… Soul Trader principle 5

Without co-operation nothing would happen. We are interconnected ad inter-related. Whatever stage you are in your career or business co-operation and engaging others will be the key to your success – or a major contributor to failure.

We often get so stuck in our own minds, concerns, issues and perceptions that we forget to seek out those with link minds and shared values – but crucially with other strengths, styles. This chapter of Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business helps you identify the support you need and to utilise and build your network for the common greater good

Soul Trader – Putting the Heart Back into Your Business  by Rasheed Ogunlaru is published by Kogan Page and available at good books shops and online including via Amazon
